These eye-opening facts, which fly in the face of most conventional wisdom regarding who “cheats” and why, are just some of the norm-shattering ideas put forth in Untrue: Why Nearly Everything We Believe About Women, Lust, and Infidelity Is Wrong and How the New Science Can Set Us Free (out this week from Little, Brown), in which cultural critic and social researcher Wednesday Martin delves into the increasingly female-dominated field of sex research, and comes up with some game-changing conclusions. Here’s a taste.
From “The ‘Infidelity Workaround’
Alicia Walker—an assistant professor of sociology at Missouri State University—does research that forces us to rethink not only female sexuality but our most cherished and basic beliefs about what women do and are, what they want and how they behave, and the role that context plays. In her extensive review of the sociological and psychological studies on female infidelity, and her own study of forty-six female users of the Ashley Madison website before its infamous hack and shutdown in 2015 (“Life is short. Have an affair,” the company’s tagline suggested), Walker explodes several of our most dearly held notions about fe- male infidelity: that women cheat only when they are unhappy in their marriages; that unlike men, they seek emotional connection, not sexual gratification, from affairs; and that like Diane Lane’s character in Unfaithful, who literally falls and skins her knee, thus attracting the attention of the man with whom she has tryst after hot tryst, women “just” stumble into affairs. For Walker’s cohort, this was no case of having one too many at the holiday party and then somehow sleeping with a coworker. “These women weren’t just falling into it or seeking out companionship,” Walker told me flatly when we spoke on the phone one morning after she had bustled her daughter off to school.
Walker, who has blonde hair, favors red lipstick, and speaks with a touch of a Southern drawl, is well aware that her findings demolish certain familiar stereotypes. She is also conscious of the profound discomfort this might cause and more than once told me she hoped that readers of the book she wrote based on her study of female infidelity, The Secret Life of the Cheating Wife, would not shoot the messenger as they took in just how different women who commit in- fidelity are from our comforting clichés about them. But her email signature includes a quote from the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, one she lives: “My goal is to contribute to preventing people from being able to utter all kinds of nonsense about the social world.” Walker wanted me to know that the women she interviewed were funny, smart, and insightful, and most of all, they struck her as very normal. They worked quiet jobs and enjoyed being mothers, having friendly conversations with neighbors, and, in some cases, going to church.
They were also dead set on having affairs.
“The women I studied went on the [Ashley Madison] site. Created a profile. Checked back in for responses. Vetted candidates. And then met them in person. Then they ‘auditioned’ them. This was a very intentional process,” Walker emphasized. They undertook it, they told Walker, because they wanted to find partners. For sex. Most of Walker’s study participants, who ranged in age from twenty-four to sixty-five, reported being in sexless or orgasm-less marriages and told Walker they simply wanted and needed what they couldn’t get at home. But perhaps most surprisingly, the majority of women in Walker’s sample reported that they were otherwise happily partnered or married, and that these affairs were a way for them to remain in their primary relationships. They were not looking for an exit strategy or a new husband. They did not seek emotional connection or companionship. They wanted a solution to a dilemma: they felt unable or were unwilling to end their sexless or sexually unsatisfying partnerships or marriages, but they also wanted great sex. After years of sexual deprivation and dissatisfaction and struggling to stay monogamous, the women, who described themselves as otherwise unremarkable, decided to do something about it. Erica (forty-six and married) said, “One day I had just had it. I really wish I could remember what exactly caused me to search online for ‘someone’ because that is not like me at all.” Regina, thirty-eight and also married, added, “I tried very hard to just ride it out. I held out as long as I could. Once I gave in, I wondered what took me so long.” “[A] lack of sex drove me crazy,” forty-seven-year-old Tiffany told Walker simply. “I finally decided [after many years of no sex] that I deserved to have my needs met,” fifty-three-year-old Georgie said…
Walker notes that these women were rather creatively inventing a space in which they could get their needs met while avoiding the stigma, inconvenience, financial strain, and emotional pain of divorce. She calls their strategy an “infidelity workaround,” a way to have your cake and eat it too. Of course the women of Walker’s sample were taking considerable risks. Should their husbands find out, the marriages they were trying to preserve would surely end (because women who used Ashley Madison were not required to provide as much information as male users were, they were not affected by the hack of 2015). They also knew they were likely to be shamed and shunned in their communities if they were caught. And on the site itself, they were often subjected to male rage and retaliation for ending a liaison, or even for not messaging back after an invitation to do so. “You’re a fat cow no one would fu*k anyway” one man wrote to a woman (who had not posted a photo) when she didn’t respond to his online overture. Men sometimes also left information on the “feedback” section of the women’s profiles, falsely suggesting they had slept with them and rating the experience unfavorably, as “payback” for the women not responding to them. Slut-shaming apparently exists even where men and women come together to cheat. Such consequences for simply being on the site and exercising the right not to connect with male users who desire it were common, the women told Walker.
But the participants in her study wanted sex badly enough that they willingly took these chances. They had run the calculus and considered the options: cheat for sexual satisfaction and accept the risk it entailed; don’t cheat and continue to live without satisfying sex, or any sex at all; be openly non-monogamous and risk almost certain stigma in their communities and blowback from their husbands, including, possibly, divorce; initiate divorce, thus, in the words of one woman, “dismantling my life and breaking my husband’s heart as well as my own.” Divorce could mean custody issues, financial hardship, and the loss of social and family support. In Walker’s formulation, “These women were unwilling to toss the dice a second time on marriage and risk ending up with a lesser hand than the one they currently held.” They efficiently pursued what they wanted and confounded our received script that women don’t care about or need sex the way men do, and that women who have affairs fall in love and inevitably “destroy their marriages” because “women who have affairs want emotional connection, not sex.” As Walker says, “These women enjoyed the time spent with outside partners but were not left pining for them to ride in on a white horse and sweep them away into the sunset.” Walker’s study subjects challenge just about all our received notions of female sexuality, fidelity, and motivation.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry enjoyed their Royal Wedding on May 19.
Since then Meghan, a former-actress, has been known as the Duchess of Sussex.
The Suits star is adapting to royal life, living in Britain and being a member of the historic family.
And she has also been adapting her style as she grows into her new role.
Meghan was lauded for her edgier style when she first began to date Prince Harry.
What does a style expert have to say about her latest transformation?
Fashion expert Anna Mewes told Express.co.uk: “I think it’s understandable that Meghan has played it quite safe since her wedding but I am a bit disappointed that she hasn’t been a little more daring with some of her sartorial choices.
“She had such a lovely edge to her look before becoming a Duchess which I think she could have kept to a certain degree even after getting married.”
Some of Meghan’s greatest style moments include her trip to Edinburgh with Prince Harry last year.
The LA native wore a masculine Burberry Tartan wool coat with wide leg trousers and heels.
She also looked fabulous when she visited Wales wearing a Stella McCartney tie detail coat and Huit Denim Dina jeans.
However, there is one area in which Meghan has followed in Kate’s style and beauty footsteps to detrimental effect, the expert has said.
Meghan Markle’s messy bun seemed to set a trend during her early visits to various parts of the UK.
While many videos popped up online advising how to recreate the look, others claimed the hair do was against royal protocol.
For her most recent outings Meghan has worn her hair in glossy curls, just like Kate Middleton does.
However, Anna claims this style switch up is a mistake on Meghan’s behalf.
She said: “I would be telling her to go back to her signature hair styles that are just a little deconstructed, rather than the perfectly ‘done’ glossy waves, which for me are a little dated.”
Meghan Markle at Prince Louis’ christening wore a pretty olive green ensemble.
She appeared to be wearing the now sold-out Manolo Blahnik BB Suede Pointed-Toe Pump in Olive.
Similar shoes in different colours cost around $ 584.95 (£442.24) from the designer’s website.

Alabama Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore’s account of when he began dating his wife Kayla would place the start of their courtship before her divorce from her first husband, according to court documents.
This comes as the Moore campaign’s defense of the retired judge against multiple allegations of sexual misconduct hinges on disputing minute details of the accusers’ versions of events.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Washington Examiner asked Moore’s campaign to explain apparent contradictions between his account of his relationship with Kayla Kisor and information contained in public records.
“Regardless of when they met, Judge and Kayla did not date while she was still with her ex-husband or legally married,” campaign spokesman Brett Doster responded by email.
Moore claims in his 2005 book “So Help Me God” to have met Kayla at a church gathering the week before Christmas in 1984.
“I was determined to get to know her, but Kayla, divorced and with a beautiful little girl, Heather, who was nearly a year old, was not interested in a relationship with anyone,” he later wrote of the encounter.
Divorce records obtained by the Washington Examiner show that Kayla, however, had not yet even filed for divorce from her first husband, John Charles Heald, by the time she caught Moore’s attention at the Christmas gathering. In fact, Kayla and Heald had only just separated on Dec. 1, 1984, two weeks before her and Moore’s serendipitous introduction.
The same records show Kayla filed for divorce at a courthouse in Floyd Co., Ga., on Dec. 28, 1984. The divorce was finalized nearly four months later on April 19, and a permanent custody judgment was issued on Jan. 9, 1989.
By Moore’s account, he and Kayla began dating “soon after” she visited the law office of his colleague “early in the new year” of 1985. They dated for “about a year,” he claimed, before becoming engaged and then married on Dec. 14, 1985.
That would lead readers to believe the pair began dating in late 1984 or early 1985, a period during which court records show his bride-to-be was still legally married to Heald and would be until the spring.
“That was always an assumption,” a source with knowledge of Kayla’s first marriage said when asked whether she dated Moore before finalizing her divorce. The same source said Moore gave Kayla’s daughter, who was almost two years old at the time, a puppy for Valentine’s Day in 1985, further suggesting that he and Kayla were seeing each other at that time.
The overall discrepancy is what prompted the Washington Examiner to contact Moore’s campaign, a request his spokesman characterized as “really scraping the bottom of the barrel.”
Moore’s campaign, however, has been eager to discredit his accusers based on alleged inconsistencies in marginal details of their accounts, down to the location of a dumpster at the Old Hickory House restaurant, outside of which a former waitress claims she was sexually assaulted by Moore.
The campaign and its close allies have also questioned whether there was a phone installed in the bedroom of one of his accusers; whether a yearbook signature that appears to belong to Moore was doctored; and whether a woman, who claims she was 14 years old when Moore initiated sexual contact with her, was capable of walking one mile to a location where he once picked her up.
Amid an outpouring of misconduct allegations, Moore’s campaign has clearly set the standard that details are important and should be vetted rigorously. Why, then, should the inconsistencies surrounding Moore’s story not draw his own credibility into question?
Doster, Moore’s spokesman, said Kayla returned to Alabama in 1984 “after a difficult marriage,” a description confirmed throughout the pages of her divorce file.
According to a marriage certificate obtained by the Washington Examiner, Kayla, then 21, married Heald, 20, in Alabama on June 5, 1982. Less than five months later, their daughter Heather was born. Two-and-a-half years after they exchanged vows, Kayla filed for divorce, citing “cruel treatment during the marriage” in the complaint.
The court in 1989 awarded Kayla permanent custody of Heather, who had been adopted by Moore.
Kayla’s second marriage, to Moore, started off on an unusual note, as she filed for bankruptcy a day after they applied for a marriage license and four days before they ultimately tied the knot, court records show.
“You probably more typically see that done the other way,” said Thomas Knight, an Alabama attorney who used to represent Kayla’s father, explaining it is abnormal for someone to “entangle a new spouse” in bankruptcy.
Given all this information, Moore appears to have written a more favorable version of history in which he never dated a married woman before she was legally divorced.
If the judge is elected next Tuesday, and Senate investigators get to work on an ethics probe, this could look less like barrel scraping and more like barely scraping the surface of his past.

A former colleague of Roy Moore’s told CNN on Saturday that it was “common knowledge” that he “dated high school girls” when he was in his 30s.
Moore is currently running as a Republican for an open Senate seat in Alabama. His campaign has been in turmoil since The Washington Post published a report on Thursday detailing allegations of sexual misconduct against him. One woman claimed that Moore initiated a sexual encounter with her when she was 14 and he was 32.
Several other women told The Post that Moore pursued romantic relationships with them while he was in his 30s and they were between the ages of 16 and 19. The age of consent in Alabama is 16.
Theresa Jones used to work as a deputy district attorney in the same courthouse as Moore, and she told CNN on Saturday that “everyone we knew thought it was weird” that Moore dated girls significantly younger than he was.
“We wondered why someone his age would hang out at high school football games and the mall, but you really wouldn’t say anything to someone like that,” she added.
Moore has denied the allegation made by the woman who said he behaved inappropriately towards her when she was 14, and said that he had never met her.
He did recall knowing two of his other accusers, but he denied that he had ever engaged in any sexual misconduct with them.
In response to the allegations involving one accuser, Debbie Wesson Gibson, Moore told Fox News opinion commentator Sean Hannity, “I don’t remember going out on dates. I knew her as a friend. If we did go out on dates, then we did. But I don’t remember that.”
He also said he remembered another accuser, Gloria Thacker Deason, who said she was 18 when she started going out with Moore, who was 32 then. Deason told The Post that Moore also bought her alcohol when she was 18 or 19. At the time, the drinking age in Alabama was 19.
When Hannity asked Moore whether he remembered dating teenage girls when he was in his 30s, Moore replied, “Not generally, no.”
“I don’t remember dating any girl without the permission of her mother,” he said. He later pointed to The Post’s story and said, “These two young girls actually said their mothers encouraged them to be friends with me.”
After a commercial break, Moore became more forceful in his denials of dating teenagers. He told Hannity that doing so “would be out of my customary behavior” and that he “never” would have dated a teen without her mother’s permission.
Since the claims against Moore were published, over a dozen Republican senators have called on him to drop out of the Senate race. But Moore appears unlikely to take that step, particularly because he has significant backing from prominent Alabama Republicans and the far-right Trumpist wing of the GOP, many of whom have either said the allegations are not a big deal, or that they are entirely false.
Moore has painted the allegations against him as part of an effort by liberals to smear his candidacy.
“The Obama-Clinton Machine’s liberal media lapdogs just launched the most vicious and nasty round of attacks against me I’ve EVER faced!” he tweeted on Thursday. “We are are in the midst of a spiritual battle with those who want to silence our message.”
“The forces of evil will lie, cheat, steal –– even inflict physical harm –– if they believe it will silence and shut up Christian conservatives like you and me,” he added.
“I believe you and I have a duty to stand up and fight back against the forces of evil waging an all-out war on our conservative values!” he continued. “Our nation is at a crossroads right now — both spiritually and politically.”

A Japanese court has sentenced a “Black Widow” who met wealthy partners via dating agencies and poisoned them with cyanide. She kept the poison in a plant pot, and revealed she had killed her husband for spending “millions of yen” on other women.
Chisako Kakehi, 70, was sentenced to death for the murder of three men, including her husband, and the attempted murder of another. The men were all in their 70s, Kyoto District Court said on Tuesday, as cited by the local media. “The accused made the victims drink a cyanide compound, with a murderous intention in all four cases,” Judge Ayako Nakagawa told the court, NHK reported, as cited by AFP.
Kakehi, also known as “the Poison Lady,” killed the men after they made her the beneficiary of life insurance policies, prosecutors said. She chose her future partners on dating agencies, the main criterion being their annual income – it had to be more than 10 million yen ($ 87,900).
The 70-year-old married or partnered at least 10 men and inherited about 1 billion yen. However, the one-time millionairess went bankrupt and was debt-ridden.
The serial killer kept some of her cyanide in a plant pot which she later threw out, according to prosecutors. She tricked her victims into drinking the poison, telling them that the drink was a health cocktail.
Kakehi was arrested in November 2014 and later charged with killing her fourth husband in December 2013. Later the prosecution indicted her for the deaths of the two other men.
The woman later admitted that she had indeed killed her husband back in 2013 “I killed him… because he gave other women tens of millions of yen but did not give me even a penny,” she told the court, as reported by AFP citing Jiji Press. She said she was ready to be hanged. “Even if I were executed tomorrow, I would die smiling,” the accused told judges.
Kakehi’s defense lawyers claim that she can’t be criminally liable, as she had developed dementia at the time of the murders. That argument, however, was rejected by the court.

Meghan Markle, 36, and Prince Harry, 33, recently celebrated their one year anniversary.
Royal watchers are waiting for an engagement, with bookies slashing the odds on a wedding the summer 2018.
Meghan has even been rumoured to have met the Queen, who will have to give her permission for Prince Harry to wed.
But before she started dating the British royal, who were the men in Meghan’s life?
Cory Vitiello
Meghan dated the Canadian celebrity chef for two years before breaking up in 2016.
Cory and Meghan did not speak publicly about their relationship but he referred to her as “my lady” in March 2016.
He tweeted: “So proud of my lady Meghan Markle being named Ambassador for World Vision.”
Trevor Engelson
Meghan was married to Trevor, a film producer and manager, for two years.
The couple dated for six years before they got engaged in 2010, and wed in Ocho Rios, Jamaica.
Their wedding was in September 2011, but it wasn’t to last, with the duo separating in September 2013.
Rory McIlroy
Reports of a romance between Irish golfer Rory and Meghan circulated after they appeared on each others social media.
He helped the Suits actress film her own Ice Bucket Challenge in August 2014.
They were then spotted enjoying dinner together in a Dublin restaurant. But neither has ever confirmed a romance, and they are most likely to be just friends.
The actress, now 85, fondly remembered the showstopper – but was frank and honest about the less enjoyable elements of the production.
“The dialogue is dated, but it was dated when we shot it,” she told Entertainment Weekly when asked of her thoughts on the 1961 movie today.
“I’d think, ‘God, old farts are writing this.’ But the musical numbers are just so delicious.”
But speaking of ‘America’ in particular, she beamed: “It’s a killer show-stopper. And you have to credit [choreographer and co-director] Jerome Robbins, though he absolutely drove the dancers. Wow, how cruel he could be.
“A lot of the dancers hated him — but loved him. He would think nothing of making us do one step over and over until we broke down in tears or pulled something. Shin splints for days.
“He was a tough and demanding daddy, but if you got a smile out of him, you floated on air for days.”
America, she said, took five days to film; and the sweaty conditions on set combined with costume – which in this case included a wig – was tough going.
“They nailed that damn thing to my head,” she said. “My head was so sore at the end of every day.
“They make anchors with bobby pins and then when they put the wig on, they take a hair pin and hook it to the other side of the wig to the spit curls. My scalp was sometimes absolutely red.”
West Side Story was released in 1961 and was nominated for a hefty 11 Oscars – of which it won ten.
Moreno is now starring in One Day At A Time.
You definitely had a thing for the pretty boy who you knew deep down wasn’t any good for you, but you’d have fun anyway and you know you’d look glam on his arm.
You actually originally had a crush on Joe but realised after getting to know the guys, that Nick was the one for you. You even had matching purity rings and would be featured on the cover of J-14.
You’d have a quiet romance away from the public eye, attending intimate gigs and spending most of your time just hanging out playing video games.
You fell for him in Gilmore Girls but you wouldn’t have started dating until his Heroes days. You obviously kept him grounded amongst all the Hollywood hype.
You would’ve had an on-again off-again relationship that always ended up with you back together. This was until you realised you wanted something serious and he was always a bit of a jokester. You still remained friends, though.
You would find yourself in the arms of this boy next door after he serenaded you with Beautiful Soul, a song he wrote for you. You’d be the envy of teen girls everywhere but you were never in it for the spotlight, you’d just love him for him.
