Two darts stars have kicked up a stink by accusing each other of farting on stage and creating a “rotten” smell during a Grand Slam clash in Wolverhampton, UK.

Scotland’s Gary Anderson and Dutchman Wesley Harms have each blamed the other for being behind the noxious air on stage as they met in the Grand Slam of Darts second round.

Anderson ran out a 10-2 winner, but all the talk after the match was about the odour near the oche.

“It’ll take me two nights to lose this smell from my nose,” Harms told Dutch TV station RTL7L, implying that the stench had been dealt out by the Scot.

When presented with the accusation, Anderson revealed he had also sensed the odor on stage – but said he thought his Dutch rival had been the one with flatulence issues.

“I thought Wesley had farted on stage… you can put your finger up my arse, there’ll be no smell there,” said the no-nonsense Scot.

“I thought he’d s***, and I went, ‘that’s dirty’. It was bad, it was a stink, I thought it was him, then he started to play better and I thought he must have needed to get some wind out.”

Two-time world champion Anderson, 47, was adamant when pressed again about the accusations: “No, hands up. Swear on my kid’s life, so help me god, nothing crossed.

“It was smelly. Usually if I fart on stage I s*** myself. You know that because I’ve told you in a documentary.

“If I’d farted and it smelled like that I’d put my hands up and go, ‘sorry, I need to get off’. It was eggs, rotten eggs…

“Every time he walked past there was a waft of rotten eggs, so that’s why I was thinking it was him.”

Anderson progresses to the quarter-finals with the 10-2 win, but ‘Fartgate’ will no doubt linger on.

Darts farts: ‘It was eggs, rotten eggs’ https://briefnews.eu/darts-farts-it-was-eggs-rotten-eggs/ https://briefnews.eu/darts-farts-it-was-eggs-rotten-eggs/#respond Fri, 16 Nov 2018 21:40:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/darts-farts-it-was-eggs-rotten-eggs/ Professional dart players Gary Anderson and Wesley Harms have caused a stink by accusing each other of farting onstage.

Two-time world champ Anderson blew away Harms 10-2 to book a quarterfinal spot at the Grand Slam of Darts in the UK overnight.

In a post-match TV interview, Dutch thrower Harms, 34, claimed his Scottish rival was responsible for breaking wind on stage.

But world No. 4 Anderson, 47, hit back, suggesting it was Harms who left the unpleasant smell.

“It definitely came from table-side and it was eggs, rotten eggs, but not from me,” Anderson said.

“Every time I walked past there was a waft of rotten eggs so that’s why I was thinking it was him.

“It definitely wasn’t me. I thought he had a s*** and I went ‘That’s dirty’.

“It was bad. It was a stink. Then he started to play better and I thought he must have needed to get some wind out.

“If somebody has done that they need to see a doctor. Seemingly he says it was me but I would admit it.”

Harms reckons he noticed a “fragrant smell” on the stage, which he believed to have been left by Anderson.

He let rip to Dutch TV channel RTL7, saying: “It’ll take me two nights to lose this smell from my nose. I didn’t know things like this can also happen within the PDC (Professional Darts Corporation.”

“If the boy thinks I’ve farted he’s 1010 per cent wrong. I swear on my children’s lives that it was not my fault,” he added.

“I had a bad stomach once on stage before and admitted it. So I’m not going to lie about farting on stage.”

Among the many dark arts darts players have tried over the years, breaking wind is the one that goes unnoticed to the TV cameras and punters.

And yet it has the devastating effect of distracting a rival as they are about to throw.

Anderson added: “One player did it quite a lot but I’m not going to say any names. Everyone will know who I’m talking about. But I was born with manners if I actually did that I’d go as far away as possible to the edge of the stage.”

Anderson, PDC king in 2015 and 2016, also revealed he “needs a new body” after struggling with a back problem.

“I have restricted movement in lifting my left arm and my back is still bad, it’s been a year now like that,” he said.

“I’ve trapped something in my neck. The biggest problem is my left arm, though.

“If I have a couple of weeks off, my back is then fine. If I have two weeks solid playing darts, I’m crippled again. It just must be the way I’m standing. I’ll struggle on.”

Eric Bristow dead: Darts legend dies aged 60 midway through Premier League clash https://briefnews.eu/eric-bristow-dead-darts-legend-dies-aged-60-midway-through-premier-league-clash/ https://briefnews.eu/eric-bristow-dead-darts-legend-dies-aged-60-midway-through-premier-league-clash/#respond Thu, 05 Apr 2018 22:11:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/eric-bristow-dead-darts-legend-dies-aged-60-midway-through-premier-league-clash/

Darts legend Bristow was a five-time world champion and died of cardiac arrest on Thursday evening.

He had been at the Echo Arena in Liverpool for tonight’s Premier League Darts.

And fans at the darts tonight showed their appreciation for The Crafty Cockney, chanting: “There’s only one Eric Bristow” as news of his death filtered into the arena.

Word spread during Peter Wright’s final match of the night against Daryl Gurney, which ended 6-6.

Wright and Gurney hugged on stage and applauded the fans at the end of the match, before Wright left the stage in tears.

Keith Deller, who beat Bristow in the 1983 world final and was working for Sky Sports, was visibly shocked as he spoke on stage about his great pal.

“When you look at the big stars we have produced in Britain, Eric Bristow is right up at the top. It is a really sad night for me because he was one of the best friends I have ever had in my life,” Deller said.

“Players involved in the game must thank Eric because if it wasn’t for him they wouldn’t be here now.

“In the 40th year of the Monarchy, four world champions of sport had a personal meeting with the Queen.

“There was Frank Bruno, Nick Faldo, Nigel Mansell, one other, and Eric Bristow. That’s how big a name he was, both for darts and British sport.”

A PDC statement read: “The Professional Darts Corporation is deeply saddened to announce that five-time World Champion Eric Bristow MBE passed away on Thursday evening following a heart attack.

“Arguably the sport’s first superstar player, Bristow, 60, was World Champion five times between 1980-1986 and also won five World Masters titles during an outstanding career.

“Bristow was one of the founder players when the PDC (then World Darts Council) was formed in 1993 as the sport’s leading stars broke away from the British Darts Organisation.”

Bristow was one of the most recognised players of the 1980s, winning five World Masters titles as well as his five world championships.

He retired from competitive darts a decade ago but has remained in the arrows spotlight.

PDC Chairman Barry Hearn led the tributes to Bristow, stating: “Eric will always be a legend in the world of darts and British sport. He was a tremendous player and a huge character and even after his retirement fans would travel for miles to meet him and see him play.

“Eric was never afraid of controversy, but he spoke as he found and was honest and straightforward which is what people admired about him. The PDC, and the sport of darts, will miss him.”

Current PDC world champion Michael van Gerwen tweeted: “Just heard the latest horrible news that Eric Bristow has passed away. My thought are with his family at this sad time. True legend in the game!”

Raymond van Barneveld, who lost 7-0 to Michael Smith tonight, wrote on Twitter: “Eric Bristow died tonight…. I am lost for words and really devastated !! He was darts he meant so much to me, cannot believe it !! My thoughts go out to his wife and family.”

Dennis Priestly wrote: “Absolutely devastated to be told earlier that my good friend Eric Bristow has passed away. We shared some great times together and I’m so saddened that we won’t get to share anymore. Rest in peace old friend.”

Simon Whitlock said: “Shocked and saddened to hear the news about a true legend of the sport I love. RIP Eric Bristow. Thanks for everything you did for darts. Thoughts are with Eric’s family and friends.”

Eric Bristow was one first players of the PDC era

The PDC was staging it’s Premier League Judgement Night in Liverpool tonight.

Bristow was said to have been at the Echo Arena for the event.

He acted as a mentor to darts’ greatest ever player, Phil Taylor, during their playing days and continued to stay in the limelight following his professional retirement.

Having moved to Staffordshire, East London-born Bristow guided Taylor and lent him money to launch a career which saw The Power win an astonishing 16 world championship crowns among his 79 major titles.

Bristow himself won over 70 professional titles and was actually beaten by Taylor in the 1990 world championship final.

As Taylor said earlier this year: “Even now when Eric walked into the room, I would always stand up. He would always tell me ‘Why are you sitting down, you should be practicing’. That never left me.”

In a different age for the sport, Bristow’s legendary battles with Jocky Wilson, Bobby George and John Lowe brought in huge viewing figures on the BBC.

And he was also a guest on the cult TV show Bullseye, whose legendary presenter Jim Bowen died only a few weeks ago.

In November Bristow lost his job with Sky after offensive tweets about the football sexual abuse scandal. He later apologised.

Premier League Darts LIVE updates: Express Sport brings you all the latest from Dublin

MICHAEL VAN GERWEN 7-2 ROB CROSS

Boom! Michael van Gerwen is back! He wipes the floor with world champion Rob Cross.

Cross didn’t really have a look in there. He was 3-1 down and then suddenly the match ran away from him.

In the end Van Gerwen finished off the Premier League Darts debutant and will likely finish top of the pile after week one. What a start from the defending champion.

GURNEY 6-6 VAN BARNEVELD

There we have it, the first draw of the Premier League Darts season.

Daryl Gurney has a chance to win it at 6-5 throwing first.

But Raymond van Barneveld was having none of it. He checks out on 79, his final darts causing into the red of the double 20.

It’s Michael van Gerwen vs Rob Cross next…

ANDERSON 5-7 SMITH

Unbelievable scenes! Michael Smith has beaten two-time Premier League darts champions Gary Anderson.

Anderson was cruising to victory after snatching a rapid 5-1 lead, but a spectacular 114 checkout from Smith in the seventh leg turned the match on its head.

Smith proceeded to win the next SIX legs to land a 7-5 win. I think the Scotsman missed something like 25 darts at doubles tonight.

SULJOVIC 5-7 WHITLOCK

The Australian recovers from a 3-1 deficit to win the opener. That must have killed a fair few accumulators!

Mensur Suljovic nails a maximum with his first darts but follows that with a 60. Simon Whitlock leaves himself with double tops for the match and the Austrian fails to take out 161. He sinks it and strokes his lengthy beard with glee.

OK, I made that last bit up. He gave it the fist-pump…

SULJOVIC 5-6 WHITLOCK

This really is a treat to watch. If the rest of tonight’s matches are anything like this then we’re in for a cracking night.

Whitlock somehow finds a 12-darter by taking out 81 to re-take the lead and throw for the match!

SULJOVIC 5-5 WHITLOCK

This is going down to the wire as Suljovic narrowly misses a 96 finish, but Whitlock can’t see off 140. The Austrian slots away double 16 at the second time of asking. Game on!

SULJOVIC 4-5 WHITLOCK

Oh my word! Austria’s Mensur Suljovic looked dead and buried there but he crashes in a 138 to hold. It feels like more than a hold of throw though. Has the momentum shifted?

SULJOVIC 3-5 WHITLOCK

Advantage Whitlock! Wow, a 160 finish from Simon Whitlock gives him his fourth leg on the bounce. Suljovic, the Champions League of Darts winner, looks rattled. He’s in panic mode.

SULJOVIC 3-4 WHITLOCK

Both players are averaging around 104 so far. Whitlock takes the up to 106 with a maximum before hitting double 19 to take the lead. He’s like a man possessed now!

SULJOVIC 3-3 WHITLOCK

Whitlock breaks back and the crowd are going for it! Beer everywhere. The Australian nails the first maximum before Suljovic misses the bullseye for a 4-1 lead. There’s an easy hold to level things up.

SULJOVIC 3-1 WHITLOCK

Suljovic makes 110 to move ahead, and narrowly misses double 11 from a 139 check out to break. It doesn’t matter as he gets another bite at the cherry and returns for 3 and double 4. Cracking debut.

SULJOVIC 1-1 WHITLOCK

Debutant Mensur Suljovic isn’t wasting any time with a 12-dart opening leg and Simon Whitlock returns by setting up a 125 and nailing double 10.

SULJOVIC vs WHITLOCK

19:20: Our first match is just about to get underway now folks.

It’s lucky that the match isn’t decided on entry music. Mensur Suljovic has just walked in to Tina Turner’s “Simply The Best,” while Aussie Simon Whitlock, who obviously possesses no imagination, chose Men at Work “Down Under,” which would actually be my suggestion for a new Australian national anthem.

Anyway, we’re off!

MEET THE NEW BOYS

19:15: We’ve got four newbies in this year’s 16-week tournament. Cross, Daryl Gurney, Mensur Suljovic and Gerwyn Price are all making their first appearances.

Peter Wright, Raymond van Barneveld, Simon Whitlock, Michael Smith, Gary Anderson and of course Michael van Gerwen complete the line-up.

WHAT’S ON?

19:10: OK, what’s on the menu? Allow me to read out the specials. I’m going to stop these food analogies now because I’m starving…

*Mensur Suljovic v Simon Whitlock

*Gary Anderson v Michael Smith

*Daryl Gurney v Raymond van Barneveld

*Michael van Gerwen v Rob Cross

*Peter Wright v Gerwyn Price

Feels weird writing those fixtures down without Phil Taylor around…

EVENING FOLKS

19:00: Welcome to our LIVE coverage of Premier League darts.

It’s the opening night. 10 contenders, 9,000 screaming fans packed inside Dublin’s 3Arena and a clash of the titans between Michael van Gerwen and newly-crowned world champion Rob Cross.

Couldn’t get much better, right?

Let’s get going!

Darts pioneer a true Braveheart https://briefnews.eu/darts-pioneer-a-true-braveheart/ https://briefnews.eu/darts-pioneer-a-true-braveheart/#respond Wed, 24 Jan 2018 04:19:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/darts-pioneer-a-true-braveheart/ JAMIE Harvey could have had it all when it came to darts.

The Scot, nicknamed Bravedart, was one of the pioneering 16 professionals – along with Phil “The Power” Taylor – who split from the British Darts Organisation in 1993 to form what was then the World Darts Council and became the Professional Darts Corporation.

Harvey was at one point No.4 in the world and played in every world championship between 1994 and 2006, reaching two quarter-finals and a semi-final.

Then in 2009, just as the PDC was taking off worldwide to become the phenomenon it is now, the now 62-year-old’s world fell apart.

He did not feel well on a trip to Las Vegas for his son Steven’s honeymoon in the September of that year and when the family returned both Steven and Harvey’s wife Marie took him to hospital in Glasgow.

The Scot was diagnosed with throat cancer, had a 10-hour operation to save his life, then underwent chemo and radiotherapy. He also had his voice box removed and had a permanent laryngectomy stoma fitted so he could talk.

“We went in at 1pm and I was having surgery at 4.30pm,” Harvey recalled.

Harvey, who loved his karaoke and was a heavy smoker and drinker, said he wished he had taken the plunge and sorted his health out earlier.

“I knew that from about four years before the operation there was a problem,” he said.

“When I was talking I was losing my voice, it was breaking up and I was scared to go to the doctor.

“Everybody kept telling me ‘go to the doctor’ and I used to tell them to go away I am not interested but I knew there was something wrong and I had a feeling I had cancer.

“I wish I had gone earlier because it would have only been polyps and I wouldn’t be sticking my finger here (in his voice box) all the time.”

Harvey was given the all clear five years after the life-saving surgery and is now enjoying a second lease on life.

I spoke to him on the seventh-floor balcony of his Gold Coast hotel room where he was relaxing before playing his second game of News Corp’s International Pro Darts Series.

Harvey was genuinely thankful that chairman of Dartplayers Australia, Kevin Berlyn, had backed up a promise to get him back Down Under after playing in some exhibitions a few years ago.

“For me having the cancer, I don’t get invited to a lot of things, so it was good when Kevin phoned me,” Harvey said.

“I was supposed to come two or three years ago but they cancelled it and he said they would give me another shot if they came back.

“He phoned me about five months ago and said “you’re coming over” which was a brilliant feeling, it was great to be invited.

“This place is beautiful, especially the Gold Coast.”

Harvey said the cancer had almost taken his life but he was determined to enjoy his new beginning.

“This (the Pro Darts Series) has brought me back to my old days,” he said.

“It actually has taken me back to my first TV appearance and I was crapping myself.

“I was nervous as anything but I got through it and won my game for Scotland against Wales.

“It’s like the old times, especially with Phil Taylor here as well.

“Phil’s an old mate, Russell Stewart is also a pal.

“I came through with Phil at the start on the circuit, so we went all over the place together.

“We had a bit of fun and according to Phil now they don’t have the fun we did. The players keep themselves to themselves because there is big money.

“Back then the money wasn’t as big but we were trying to make it big, that’s why we left and broke away.

“We tried to get what they’ve got now.

“I would like to have started (playing professionally) now but I couldn’t do kit at my age with the amount of practice I put in then (8-9 hours).”

While having no regrets about his lifestyle which contributed largely to his illness, Harvey said there were a couple of changes after the cancer which he was not so happy about.

“The cancer was cancer and there was nothing I could do about that,” he said philosophically.

“The thing that really got me was some of the players and their reactions.

“Some would totally ignore me – one (I won’t mention his name) who was a very good friend of mine used to phone me every day after the operation and after that he has hardly spoken .. he doesn’t want to know.

“The other thing that got to me … I was in the top 16 at the time .. then darts started getting really big and all these players were earning big money and I would go home and I would sign on (for dole money).”

Now Harvey is just living life to the full and enjoying his time in the beautiful country.

The series heads off to Townsville on January 24-25 before finishing in Mackay on January 27-28.

Harvey said he would love an invite back on any future tour but he wasn’t sure whether he would get one.

“I would love to come back it would be brilliant,” he said.

“Getting an invitation would be the hard thing, so maybe if I win one of the tournaments they would have to bring me back.”

Tickets are still available for Townsville and Mackay from Ticketek.

Darts to cast a spell over Gold Coast https://briefnews.eu/darts-to-cast-a-spell-over-gold-coast/ https://briefnews.eu/darts-to-cast-a-spell-over-gold-coast/#respond Tue, 16 Jan 2018 14:18:08 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/darts-to-cast-a-spell-over-gold-coast/ SIMON “The Wizard” Whitlock has promised a magic night of darts when News Corp’s International Pro Darts Showdown Series rolls into the Gold Coast on Wednesday night.

The world No. 8 is only playing two of the four legs of the series because he is playing in the World Masters later this month before rejoining the PDC’s Premier League.

Whitlock, 48, lost in the semi-finals to 16-time world champion Phil “The Power” Taylor in the semi-finals of the inaugural event at Brisbane’s RNA Convention Centre last week after defeating Lucas Cameron and Ray O’Donell.

The former world champion runner-up was happy with his form but was hoping to finish on a high at the Gold Coast Events Centre.

“I had a good tournament,” Whitlock said of his Brisbane performance.

“I was a bit unlucky against Phil I guess, but played a really good game.”

Whitlock is hoping the next two days on the Gold Coast can help him prepare even more for the Masters starting on January 26 in Milton Keynes and the upcoming season-long Premier League.

“The best practice you can get is match practice,” he said.

“Hopefully I’m in the other half of the draw to Phil and we’ll see what happens.”

Gold Coaster Robbie King made the semi-finals last week in Brisbane before losing to England’s Andy Hamilton.

Whitlock said tournaments such as the International Pro Darts Showdown Series can only be good for the future of darts in Queensland and Australia.

“Darts is pretty big in Queensland,” he said.

“I used to play here a lot and I know many players. The more the game is shown on TV and we get tournaments like this, then the bigger the game will get.

“Just having these tournaments is good for the up and coming players and newcomers who haven’t been exposed to the big games yet.

“It’s great experience for Robbie to get to play the likes of Phil, Kyle (Anderson), Andy and myself because it won’t happen otherwise.”

Whitlock will take on New Zealander Stuart Leach on the first night on the Gold Coast.

Rob Cross WINS World Darts Championship after stunning Phil Taylor in final https://briefnews.eu/rob-cross-wins-world-darts-championship-after-stunning-phil-taylor-in-final/ https://briefnews.eu/rob-cross-wins-world-darts-championship-after-stunning-phil-taylor-in-final/#respond Tue, 02 Jan 2018 02:08:18 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/rob-cross-wins-world-darts-championship-after-stunning-phil-taylor-in-final/

On an emotional evening at the Ally Pally, Cross, a former electrician, brought to an end the incredible career of Phil Taylor with an amazing 7-2 triumph in the final.

Cross, 27, from Hastings, used to be sparky by day and a darts player by night but now he is the shining new light of world darts, winning the £400,000 first prize after simply taking the Taylor apart.

The Power is dead, long live the man known as Voltage.

Whatever fuelled him through this championship, he never once got his wires crossed last night when all the build-up had been about Taylor, 57, bowing out from the professional side of the sport by writing one final chapter to his amazing story.

To just reach the final in his last year was remarkable whatever the outcome. And the outcome truly was the changing of the guard as Cross produced the sort of darts that used to be the trademark of Taylor.

It truly was hot Cross fun for the man from Sussex as he hit finishes of 167 and 153 to move 3-0.

And let’s remember – this was the first time Cross had ever played Taylor.

Taylor had lost only four of his 20 previous finals. He had his moments, some of them amazing as he almost landed a nine-darter, but there was just no let up in the battering that Cross was giving him.

The Power won nearest to the bull to see who would throw first and he gave the honour to Cross and it was not long before it was first blood to the debutant as he landed double 18 in the opening leg on his way to taking the first set.

Taylor then came back with his opening 180 in the fourth leg but after he missed double 18 for the leg, Cross stepped in with double 16 finish to take the set.

What a start and if Cross had nerves, well they were left in the practice room, though the opening leg of the second set was extraordinary.

As Taylor was about to throw, Cross inadvertently knocked a glass on the table on the oche.

Taylor stopped, they shared a laugh, but The Power failed to land a decisive blow and after the pair had touched fists to show the level of their sportsmanship.

Cross then missed his double chance before Voltage secured the leg on double 16 and he then won the set 3-0 with the most stunning of finishes of 167 – treble 20, treble 19 and bull.

Cross had an average of 107 at this stage compared to Taylor’s 102 and the third set was even more amazing as he won it 3-0 with a 153 finish.

Of course Taylor had his moments, such as his stunning 151 finish to move 1-0 ahead in the fourth set and then double 10 saw him finally win a set.

As he left the stage, he flipped his middle towards his entourage in the crowd as if to signal it was one set to him.

And in the first leg of the next set, it was almost disbelieving as Taylor set himself up for a nine-darter but, agonisingly, he missed the double 12 as he touched the wrong side of the wire.

Taylor turned to the crowd and smiled…but he did not even win the leg as Cross secured it on double 16 and won the set 3-0 on double eight before moving 5-1 up as he moved towards becoming the champion of the world.

Cross’s success this year has earned him a place in this year’s Premier League which starts next month. It is all change in the League with James Wade and Adrian Lewis missing out on places.

Phil Taylor vs Rob Cross: LIVE score and updates from PDC Darts World Championship final https://briefnews.eu/phil-taylor-vs-rob-cross-live-score-and-updates-from-pdc-darts-world-championship-final/ https://briefnews.eu/phil-taylor-vs-rob-cross-live-score-and-updates-from-pdc-darts-world-championship-final/#respond Mon, 01 Jan 2018 21:10:08 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/phil-taylor-vs-rob-cross-live-score-and-updates-from-pdc-darts-world-championship-final/

Phil Taylor is playing his last ever match before retiring but will it be the fairytale ending he deserves?

Standing in his way is 27-year-old Rob Cross, who was relatively unknown in the darting sphere this time last year.

Cross was an electrician before quitting in 2016. He then entered the amateur qualifiers for the UK Open that year before he was knocked out by Michael van Gerwen.

Darts then became his priority and he’s gone on to earn £211,250 playing the sport.

Sixteen-time world champion Taylor will be looking to end his career on a high though, but knows Cross will be no easy match after he dispatched reigning champion Michael van Gerwen in the semi-final.

Why is Phil Taylor retiring?

FOLLOW LIVE UPDATES OF PHIL TAYLOR VS ROB CROSS BELOW

Rob Cross vs Phil Taylor – first to seven sets

Cross (3) 0-3 (1) Taylor

Taylor finally gets a leg, checking out on 151 to a massive cheer from the crowd.

Cross misses the bull and Taylor responds to win consecutive legs for the first time in the match.

Taylor is on the board with his first set. How will Cross react to that then?

Cross (3) 3-0 (0) Taylor

Another 180 from Cross sends him on his way to hold throw with a 36 checkout.

Cross is on fire, hitting five perfect darts in the second leg. A 52 checkout makes it an 11-dart leg for the 27-year-old.

Sloppy from Taylor as he misses a 150 checkout and Cross once again punishes him with a 153 checkout.

Taylor has no answers at the moment.

Cross (2) 3-1 (0) Taylor

Taylor opens the second set with a 177 in a leg that Cross also hits 180.

There’s even a fist bump between the pair in a slightly bizarre exchange as they share a joke before Cross hits double 16.

Turns out Cross spilt his drink as Taylor took his throw. Remembe cough gate? Let’s not go back there with drink gate.

Cross isn’t lacking any confidence, checking out on 88 this time to move 2-0 up in the second set. Taylor needs this one.

And he does just that, checking out on double tops.

Taylor hits a 180 but Cross silences him with a 167 checkout by hiting the bull. Stunning darts.

Rob Cross vs Phil Taylor – best of 13 sets

Cross (1) 3-1 (0) Taylor

First leg goes to Cross as he checks out on 84, getting double 18 at his first attempt.

Some bad luck in the second leg sees Cross’ dart bounce off the board and Taylor records a 46 checkout to level the scores.

Cross hits two maximums in the third on his way to wrapping up a 12-dart leg.

Taylor goes close with a 147 checkout and then misses the chance to finish on 36. Cross punishes him and takes the first set.

Here we go

Remember, it’s the best of 13 sets and we could be in for a long evening.

Not that we mind. What else are you supposed to doing on New Year’s Day?

For the last time!

It’s only the walk on song but it’s Taylor’s last entrace to the oche.

No tears yet, from Taylor that is, not me, obviously.

The 57-year-old is relishing every moment of it and even stops to take a selfie and sign autographs for his fans.

Taylor – legend

Rob Cross was asked to describe Phil Taylor in one word.

“One word – legend.

“Don’t get me wrong, It’s Phil Taylor’s last year and it’s going to be the first time I play him.

“He’s truly amazing for what he’s done for the sport but I’ve got to be right at the same time and I’ve got a match to win.

“It’s going to be hard to separate the two but it’s got to happen that way.”

You’ll be a legend too if you pull this off, Cross.

Prize money

Just a reminder there is £400,000 at stake tonight for the winner, with the runner-up getting a cool £170,000.

And Cross only earned his first £250 as a professional in February.

As pay-rises go, that’s a good one.

Walk ons

Not long until both players make their way through the crowd to the oche.

Everyone knows Phil Taylor’s ‘The Power’ walk on song but what about Rob Cross?

His choice of walk-on music is ‘Hot Hot Hot’ by Arrow.

Get ready to sing along!

Phil Taylor’s brilliant gesture ahead of World Darts Championship with legend in hospital https://briefnews.eu/phil-taylors-brilliant-gesture-ahead-of-world-darts-championship-with-legend-in-hospital/ https://briefnews.eu/phil-taylors-brilliant-gesture-ahead-of-world-darts-championship-with-legend-in-hospital/#respond Mon, 01 Jan 2018 19:10:32 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/phil-taylors-brilliant-gesture-ahead-of-world-darts-championship-with-legend-in-hospital/

The 16-time world champion is currently preparing for his final ever match when he takes to the oche to face Rob Cross in tonight’s final at Alexandra Palace.

Millions are expected to tune in to see if Taylor gets his fairytale ending and none more so than two-time World Championship runner-up Bobby George.

But the former darts player is currently waiting to be discharged from hospital following a chest infection.

And on Twitter George revealed Taylor has boosted his spirits with a call to see how he is.

WHY IS PHIL TAYLOR RETIRING FROM DARTS?

“Lovely jubbly! No clot showing on my lung scan, so it’s a case of more antibiotics to clear the chest infection,” he tweeted.

“Waiting to be discharged from hospital, hopefully in time to get home and watch the final. Thanks to @PhilTaylor giving me a bell to check on me, today of all days!

George admitted the number of people messaging him also made him emotional as he received well wishes from the likes of BDO darts presenter Colin Murray.

“THANK YOU ALL for the well wishes! Choked me up! Not good with bad chest!” George added.

“My @LittleRichard with constant updates! Visits from @KDeller138 @ColinJawsLloyd and Paul Durrant. My old mates @raystubbs @ColinMurray phoning.

“Mention from @stuartpykesport on Sky. 1001 messages! CHEERS x”.

Taylor’s final match at Alexandra Palace is due to start at 8pm this evening.

Express Sport will be bringing you live updates of all the action as the sport’s greatest brings the curtain down on his illustrious career.

World Darts Championship: Michael van Gerwen will NEVER match Phil Taylor – Peter Manley https://briefnews.eu/world-darts-championship-michael-van-gerwen-will-never-match-phil-taylor-peter-manley/ https://briefnews.eu/world-darts-championship-michael-van-gerwen-will-never-match-phil-taylor-peter-manley/#respond Thu, 28 Dec 2017 08:44:26 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/world-darts-championship-michael-van-gerwen-will-never-match-phil-taylor-peter-manley/

Phil Taylor is set to retire from the sport at the end of the year, bowing out when his race is run at the World Championships.

The 57-year-old has admitted he wants to finish on a high and will be going for his 17th crown at the Alexandra Palace.

In the New Year, The Power’s absence is expected to set the wheels in motion for an era of dominance from world No 1 Michael van Gerwen.

However, Peter Manley thinks the Dutchman will never reach the same level as Taylor, who he predicts will continue to have success on the Legends Tour.

When asked about Van Gerwen’s position after Taylor’s retirement, Manley told Sky Sports: “Yeah he will dominate.

“But he won’t win anything like Taylor’s success over the years.

“I haven’t got a hatred for Taylor and he might even go and want to win the Legends Tour now.”

Van Gerwen has already begun to stutter in this year’s World Championships and had to battle past Welshman Gerwyn Price 4-2 in the third round.

And he admitted after the match he had played poorly, citing illness and a lack of concentration for the result.

“I played c**p, simple, it’s true,” Van Gerwen said.

“From the beginning I wasn’t feeling well.

“I wasn’t playing my game from the beginning. My focus in the game wasn’t there.

“I wasn’t on my game 100 per cent but all the credit goes to him. He keeps fighting and never gives up.”
