Canada’s Dara Howell was golden Saturday in the women’s big air event at the freestyle skiing World Cup season finale in Quebec City.

The Huntsville, Ont., native topped the podium with a score of 175.00 ahead of Italy’s Silvia Bertagna (174.00), while fellow Canadian Megan Cressey (152.80) earned bronze.

Howell, who finished 21st in the slopestyle event at Pyeongchang last month, reached the podium for the first time this year. 

“I just wanted to come out, do my 10, do my switch-right 7, and wherever that put me it was going to put me,” said Howell, who won Olympic gold in slopestyle at the 2014 Sochi Games. “This is my first big air contest so I’m happy to walk away with the win.”

On the men’s side, Teal Harle had Canada’s second bronze of the day with a score of 182.00. 

“I couldn’t land any of my tricks in practice and I didn’t have any other plan so I had to figure things out during the finals which is what I did,” Harle said. “It’s really cool to compete in this location, between the highways and so many people came out here today to watch us and the atmosphere was great.”

Teal Hearle wound up on the podium in Quebec City after his final jump was just enough to secure the bronze medal.2:54

Norway’s Christian Nummedal was first with 189.00 ahead of Sweden’s Hugo Burvall. 

In the final World Cup event of the season, Christian Nummedal went out on top after taking gold in Quebec City.1:47

Canadians Evan McEachran and Max Moffat finished fifth and sixth.

Dara Khosrowshahi has accepted the position of Uber CEO after he was selected by the company’s board on Sunday.

The former Expedia CEO’s appointment comes after embattled Uber cofounder Travis Kalanick was ousted as CEO of the world’s most valuable private company in June, as Uber has suffered an exodus of its top ranks amid mounting public and legal scandals.

“I am excited to welcome Dara Khosrowshahi as Uber’s next CEO,” Kalanick said in a statement on Tuesday. “With a deep passion for team building, Dara grew Expedia into one of the world’s most successful travel and technology platforms. Casting a vote for the next chief executive of Uber was a big moment for me and I couldn’t be happier to pass the torch to such an inspiring leader.”

In a memo sent to Uber employees, the company’s board called Khosrowshahi< “the best person to lead Uber into the future” and said his appointment is also aimed at “improving our culture and making Uber the best place to work.”

Expedia couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.

Khosrowshahi was the dark horse in Uber’s chaotic and highly publicized CEO search. HP CEO Meg Whitman and former GE CEO Jeff Immelt were the other two candidates considered by the board for the role over the past weekend.

Although he indicated that he intended to accept the Uber CEO position earlier Tuesday in press interviews, Khosrowshahi’s contract wasn’t finalized. His hiring likely comes with a hefty price tag that could top $ 200 million thanks to unvested stock options from his previous gig.

Khosrowshahi, 48, has been CEO of Expedia for 12 years, during which he turned it into the biggest online travel agency in the US. An Iranian immigrant who moved to New York as a kid, he started his career at the investment bank Allen & Co. before serving as CFO at the media company IAC.

Now that his new CEO job is official, Khosrowshahi will greet Uber employees at an all-hands meeting at the company’s San Francisco headquarters on Wednesday.

In a move that surprised the tech industry, Uber on Sunday offered its CEO job to a man who wasn’t on anyone’s radar: Expedia’s CEO Dara Khosrowshahi.

If he accepts the job, he will be leading the world’s most valuable privately-held tech startup, valued at more than $ 60 billion by its investors. But he will also have an incredibly tough job steering the ride-hailing company back to stability, after months of controversies and bitter infighting at the board level.

So who is Uber’s chosen one?

Khosrowshahi, 48, has been CEO of Expedia for 12 years. Expedia is based in Bellevue, Washington. That means Khosrowshahi has spent his tech career as part of the Seattle’s tech scene, not Silicon Valley’s. While both regions are powerhouses in the tech industry, there’s also a bit of a rivalry between them.

Besides Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and Microsoft’s coterie of execs, many of Seattle’s tech leaders don’t carry the same level of instant name recognition as their Silicon Valley peers. This seems to have allowed Khosrowshahi to get all the way to the final offer for Uber’s top job without anyone in the Valley so much as blinking in his direction.

Indeed, after weeks of speculation and leaks about high profile candidates like HPE’s Meg Whitman and former GE CEO Jeff Immelt, the news of Khosrowshahi’s selection provoked a one-word reaction among many observers: Who?

While not a tech celebrity, Khosrowshahi has had a very impressive and respectable run during his long tenure at Expedia, growing its revenues from $ 2.1 billion in in 2005 to $ 8.7 billion in 2016. He turned Expedia into the biggest online travel agency in the US, owning travel sites like Hotels.com, Orbitz, Trivago, HomeAway, Travelocity as well as sites for vacation rentals, car rentals and so on.

Khosrowshahi was born in Iran but came to the US as a kid, grew up in New York State and is a US citizen. He has a degree in electrical engineering from Brown University, according to his LinkedIn, Prior to running Expedia, he was the CFO at IAC, the internet and media conglomerate chaired by Barry Diller. IAC bought Expedia in 2003, then spun it out into Khosrowshahi’s hands in 2005.  

Not afraid to speak his mind

Before landing at IAC, Khosrowshahi was in finance, working for investment bank Allen & Co for seven years.

He has a reputation as a good leader, according to ratings on Glassdoor, with a 93% approval rating.

Khosrowshahi is known for his strong belief in how technology is eating the world. For instance, he recently developed an obsession for voice search, and uses several voice assistants at home, he told the Financial Times Leslie Hook last month. He imagines a day when someone could book an entire travel itinerary through voice.

He also hasn’t been afraid to speak out against President Trump, who’s immigration policies have created uncertainty for the travel industry.

After white supremacists marched on Charlottesville, and Trump was slow to condemn them for the ensuing violence, Khosrowshahi  tweeted, “I keep waiting for the moment when our Prez will rise to the expectations of his office and he fails, repeatedly.”

His willingness to be outspoken about politics probably isn’t that surprising. He’s on the board of the The New York Times Company. He’s also on the board of sports fan apparel site Fanatics, and he’s a director on Expedia’s board.

The board of Uber Technologies Inc., after meeting throughout the weekend, has chosen Expedia CEO Dara Khosrowshahi as its new chief executive.

Khosrowshahi’s name wasn’t even on the public list of contenders for the job, but after today’s vote, he has been picked as the new boss, reports The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Reuters. HP Enterprises CEO Meg Whitman and former GE CEO Jeffrey Immelt were thought to be the top contenders.

Immelt withdrew earlier today when it became clear he didn’t have enough votes, according to the NYT. The board was leaning toward Whitman, “but matters changed over the course of Sunday afternoon,” the newspaper reported.

(Reuters) — Uber Technologies Inc on Sunday chose Dara Khosrowshahi, the chief executive of travel company Expedia Inc, as its chief executive, according to two sources with knowledge of the matter, handing him the challenge of leading the ride-services company out of a nearly year-long crisis.

Khosrowshahi, 48, would take on the daunting task of mending Uber’s image, repairing frayed relations among investors, rebuilding employee morale and creating a profitable business after seven years of losses.

He would also have to contend with the legacy of Travis Kalanick, Uber’s pugnacious co-founder, who was ousted as CEO in June after shareholders representing about 40 percent of the company’s voting power signed a letter asking him to step down amid growing concern over his behavior and the behavior of senior managers under him.

The Uber board of directors has been meeting daily and deliberated on its pick for CEO throughout the weekend. A spokeswoman said on Sunday that the board had voted but was declining to disclose its choice publicly until after informing employees.

A Uber spokesman declined to comment. A representative for Expedia did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Khosrowshahi was not known to the public to be among the top candidates for the job.

He beat out Jeff Immelt, chairman of General Electric Co and one of the finalists for the job, who said earlier on Sunday he was no longer in the running. Meg Whitman, chief executive of Hewlett Packard Enterprise, had also been a leading candidate.

Khosrowshahi, who ran Expedia for 12 years, would bring an end to a company culture built on founder control. Kalanick enjoyed sweeping authority on the board and nearly complete autonomy in running the company, a governance style that often wreaked havoc.

Uber has been embattled by allegations of sexual harassment, a lawsuit alleging trade-secrets theft, a federal criminal probe over use of software to evade city regulators, and allegations of executives mishandling the medical records of a victim who was raped by her Uber driver in India, among other controversies.

Despite the controversies, Uber is still a growing company. Last week, the company reported a 16 percent increase in ride bookings and 17 percent jump in net revenue for the second quarter over the previous period, and its losses shrank by 9 percent.

Among Khosrowshahi’s first tasks at Uber would be filling a slew of executive vacancies, including those of chief financial officer, chief operating officer and general counsel. In the absence of top leadership, Uber has been run by a 13-person committee.

Uber investor Benchmark Capital complicated the CEO search when the firm filed a lawsuit earlier this month against Kalanick to force him off the board and rescind his ability to fill two board seats. The legal salvo has divided the board and shareholders.

What role Kalanick has in the company going forward is a critical question whose answer remains unclear. Benchmark has accused Kalanick of meddling in the CEO search as part of a scheme to regain power, an accusation Kalanick has called “meritless.”

In a previous statement, Kalanick said he would support the new CEO “to guide Uber into its next phase of growth and ensure its continued success.”

The board had narrowed the CEO search down to three people, with different factions backing different candidates. Former GE CEO Jeff Immelt was a top candidate, but he publicly backed out on Sunday.

Another of the three candidates, HP CEO Meg Whitman, met with Uber’s board over the weekend despite her publicly saying she wouldn’t take the job last month.

Khosrowshahi’s involvement in the CEO search wasn’t made known until Sunday, making him a dark horse in the race.

Uber and Expedia couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.
