Our elected officials are pretty old. That's hardly news, deputy editor Dave Levinthal writes.

But our government has never been older than it is today. And the gap between US leaders and those being led is historically wide — at a time when voters will soon hit the polls for another election.

Insider's new "Red, White, and Gray" project explores the costs, benefits, and dangers of life in a democracy helmed by those of advanced age, where issues of profound importance to the nation's youth and future — technology, civil rights, energy, the environment — are largely in the hands of those whose primes have passed. Here's what we found:

  • Nearly one in four members of Congress are in their 70s or 80s, with key leaders born before or during World War II. 
  • Almost 50% of Americans are under the age of 40, but only about 5% of members of Congress are.
  • The brain of an 80-year-old is almost certainly different than that of a 45-year-old, neuroscience tells us.

Plus, federal lawmakers such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Lauren Boebert, and Jon Ossoff dished on why youth is an advantage in Washington, DC — and congressional staffers described the lengths to which they've gone to keep aged lawmakers focused, engaged, and sometimes upright.

  • Vaginal Rejuvenation is a laser-based “therapy” intended to approve the appearance of the vagina.
  • According to the FDA, some companies deceptively market the procedure.
  • FDA Commissioner Scott Gotlieb said on Twitter that the procedure can cause burning, scarring, or chronic pain.  
  • The FDA has alerted seven companies about their inappropriate marketing and will take action if the issues are not addressed.  


The FDA issued an official warning this week against “vaginal rejuvenation devices,” saying that they can pose serious health risks to people with vaginas. 

“These products have serious risks and don’t have adequate evidence to support their use for these purposes,” said Scott Gotlieb, FDA Commissioner in a Twitter thread yesterday.  “We’re deeply concerned that women are being harmed by these procedures.”

US scientists found those with disturbed night-time sleep patterns, leading to daytime snoozing, were more likely to have the first traces of the disease – and they occur much earlier than thought.

Researchers said it was unclear if disturbed sleep put people at risk of Alzheimer’s or if disease-related brain changes caused disrupted sleep rhythms.

But the study found those who catnapped, even if they got enough sleep, had a greater probability of early Alzheimer’s.

The findings add to growing evidence linking disruptions in the body clock, or circadian rhythms, to the brain disease, which has no cure.

It is hoped doctors will identify at-risk patients in advance when new drugs are more likely to work.

Alzheimer’s damage can take root up to 20 years before clinical symptoms appear. Scientists suspect it is one of the reasons medications have failed so far because they are given to trial participants too late.

Researcher Erik Musiek of Washington University said: “Sleeping for eight hours at night is very different from getting eight hours of sleep in hour increments during daytime naps.”

He added: “It’s the first data demonstrating that the disruption of circadian rhythms could be accelerating the deposition of plaques.”

People with Alzheimer’s have beta-amyloid, which are clumps of toxic brain protein, or plaques, which cause brain tissue loss and nerve cell death, leading to memory loss.

Of the 189 cognitively normal people, with an average age of 66, who took part, 50 had abnormal results.

It suggested they had the neuron-killing protein clumps. All woke up regularly during the night or nodded off in the day or both.

Dr David Reynolds, chief scientific officer at Alzheimer’s Research UK, said: “Studies like this could lay the groundwork for new ways to detect the condition earlier.”
