Before his death in 2016, Rob Ford made headlines across the globe as the crack-smoking mayor of Toronto. Now his real life exploits are being dramatized in a Hollywood movie, and Homeland and Billions star Damian Lewis will suit up to play Ford in a drama called Run This Town. That’s odd casting, isn’t it? Read more about the Rob Ford movie below, including the other actors who will appear and what roles they’ll play.

Kit Magazine published an interview with Lewis that revealed the actor will be donning a prosthetic to look like Ford for the movie. The Hollywood Reporter says, “the film is understood to follow a reporter (Ben Platt) who attempts to expose a scandal involving a politician who doesn’t play by the rules. The politician’s aides, played by Nina Dobrev and Mena Massoud, try their best to handle him and keep the story suppressed.”

Scott Speedman (Underworld) and Jennifer Ehle (Zero Dark Thirty) are reportedly also on board, though we aren’t sure who they’ll be playing yet. According to IMDb, Run This Town will be the feature directorial debut of actor/producer Ricky Tollman (The Strain, Big Sky).

Ford was the mayor of Toronto from 2010-2014, and a highly controversial figure due to the multiple domestic violence allegations against him and his long history with drug addiction. Not only that, but THR says he had a “history of public intoxication” and “was accused of sexual assault”. In 2013, footage surfacing of Ford smoking crack cocaine while in office. He took a brief break from his mayoral duties, sought treatment for substance abuse, returned to the job, and was somehow polling in second place for reelection before ultimately withdrawing from the race due to the discovery that he had a cancerous tumor. He died in 2016 at age 46.

An unconventional politician with a shoot-from-the-hip approach and a past littered with criminal behavior? I can’t possibly fathom why that would be a relevant story in 2018. Especially in America. I mean, we’re doing great over here. No problems at all. Nope, nothing remotely similar to this happening in our country’s highest office!

On Twitter, reporter Robyn Doolittle pointed out an unfortunate fact about Run This Town:

Doolittle herself is the female reporter in question, having investigated Ford during her time at the Toronto Star. She even wrote a biography about him in 2014 called Crazy Town: The Rob Ford Story. THR does leave themselves some wiggle room by saying that the film is “understood” to feature a reporter played by Ben Platt who blows the case wide open, so I suppose there’s technically a chance that there was some miscommunication somewhere along the line and the film could actually be featuring a female journalist in that role. But if the filmmakers did change it to a male reporter for no reason, that is not a good look and this movie will be fighting an uphill battle before we even see a trailer.

Canadian Damian Warner’s bid to defend his decathlon title at the Commonwealth Games took a nose dive Tuesday when he failed to clear a height in the pole vault.

Warner missed three attempts at 4.50 metres, failing to score any points in the event. His personal best is 4.90 metres.

The 28-year-old from London, Ont., who now makes his home in Calgary, fell from first to sixth place. Fellow Canadian Pierce LePage (6,889 points) took over with a narrow lead over Grenada’s Lindor Victor (6,864). Australian Cedric Dubler was third (6,749).

LePage, from Whitby, Ont., placed second with a personal best 4.90 metres behind Dubler’s 5.00.

Warner had been on a roll in the first six events.

Warner started competition on Day 2 Tuesday with the best time in the 110-metre hurdles, clocking 13.89 seconds. He then placed fourth in the discus with a throw of 46.55 metres.

Canadian Damian Warner opened the Commonwealth Games decathlon with a strong 100 metres Monday, clocking a season-best 10.29 seconds.

The 28-year-old from London, Ont., who now makes his home in Calgary, is defending champion.

Warner, whose personal best in the 100 is 10.15, was the fastest of the 12 competitors at Carrara Stadium. Pierce LePage of Whitby, Ont., ran 10.62 and Taylor Stewart of London, Ont., 11:06.

Warner then placed second in the long jump at 7.54 metres behind Australian Cedric Dubler, who posted a season-best 7.59. LePage was third at 7.44, also a season-best, and Stewart ninth at 7.14.

Stewart was second in the shot put to Grenada’s Lindon Victor (15.79 metres) with a personal-best throw of 15.39. Warner, who also had a personal best, was fourth at 15.11. LePage was sixth at 13.98.

Warner is coming off a second-place heptathlon showing at the world indoor championships in Birmingham, England, losing to France’s Kevin Mayer by just five points despite setting a Canadian indoor record of 6,343 points.

Damian Warner in medal position at indoor track and field worlds https://briefnews.eu/damian-warner-in-medal-position-at-indoor-track-and-field-worlds/ https://briefnews.eu/damian-warner-in-medal-position-at-indoor-track-and-field-worlds/#respond Fri, 02 Mar 2018 18:32:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/damian-warner-in-medal-position-at-indoor-track-and-field-worlds/

Damian Warner attained personal and season bests and sits second ahead of Friday’s final event in the two-day heptathlon at the world indoor track and field championships.

The London, Ont., native began the day in Birmingham, U.K., with a season-best 6.74-second clocking to win his 60-metre heat and match his PB from the Athletics Ontario youth senior championships on Feb. 21, 2010.

Warner, 28, followed with a leap of 7.39 metres in the long jump before finishing the morning session with a PB of 14.90m in shot put. His previous best was 13.86, set at indoor worlds four years ago in Sopot, Poland.

Warner carries 2,669 points into the high jump at 2:45 p.m. ET, which will be live streamed at CBCSports.ca. Five hours of coverage begins at 12:50 p.m.

With 2,714 points, Kevin Mayer of France holds a 45-point lead over Warner. A year ago, the 26-year-old reigning world decathlon champion earned his first major international gold medal, shattering a 13-year record with 6,479 points to win the European indoor heptathlon title. Mayer won decathlon silver six months earlier at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

World bronze medallist Kai Kazmirek of Germany sits third with 2,572 points. Last month, he no-heighted at 2.00m in the high jump, meaning he didn’t clear any bar during the competition, at the German Indoor Championships.

Warner, who captured decathlon bronze in Brazil, could still threaten or break Michael Smith’s 25-year-old Canadian heptathlon mark of 6,279 points after scoring a PB 6,129 at the 2014 worlds.

Warner has competed sparingly this year indoors after a stomach flu hampered his chances to medal at last summer’s world championships in London, England, where Warner placed fifth.

Emmanuel in 60m semifinals

Toronto sprinter Crystal Emmanuel advanced to the women’s 60-metre semifinals at 1:50 p.m. ET, narrowly missing her indoor personal best of 7.23 seconds with a 7.26 clocking in Friday morning’s heat. The final is scheduled for 4:38 p.m.

“With a good executed race, I can run faster than I’ve ever ran,” Emmanuel said in an email to CBC Sports earlier this week. “The time should be faster than 7.28, for sure.”

Emmanuel, 26, stopped the clock in 7.28 at the Grand Prix d’Athletisme in Montreal on Feb. 10 and ran 7.30 earlier this month at an Athletics Ontario indoor series meet in Toronto (Lane 4 in video below).

She has had her indoor training interrupted this season by various injuries. At the end of last year’s outdoor season, during which Emmanuel obliterated the 34-year-old national 200 record, repeated as Canadian champion in the 100 and 200 and placed seventh at worlds, she suffered a right hamstring injury that caused an imbalance with her right glutes, quadriceps muscles and hip.

Last month, right quad tightness forced Emmanuel to withdraw from the 60 at the 53rd Knights of Columbus Indoor Games in Saskatoon after she clocked 6.30 to win the 50.

Jones, Balkwill bow out in women’s 400 heats

Canadians Travia Jones of Regina and Kelsey Balkwill of Essex, Ont., made their indoor worlds debut in the women’s 400 but failed to qualify for Friday afternoon’s semifinals.

The 22-year-old Jones, who competed at last summer’s worlds, finished fourth in her heat in 53.51 seconds, less than one second off her personal best of 52.57, set at the Fastrack National Invite on Feb. 9 in Staten Island, N.Y.

Balkwill, 25, also crossed the line fourth in her heat in 53.29. She has set four indoor PBs in 2018 in the 400 (52.64), 60 (7.59), 200 (24.01) and 600 (1:30.62).

Entire men’s field DQ’d in 400m heat

All five runners in a 400-metre heat were disqualified from their race Friday.

Abdalelah Haroun, a Qatari who won bronze at last year’s world championships, was first to leave after a false start.

Bralon Taplin of Grenada, who ran the fastest time this year, then finished first in the heat but officials later disqualified him and Steven Gayle of Jamaica, Austris Karpinskis of Austria and Alonzo Russell of the Bahamas for running out of their lanes.

The IAAF says it’s the first time in history that every runner in a world championship race has been disqualified.

Kate Garraway in angry GMB showdown with LBC presenter over Damian Green: ‘Is he a twit?’ https://briefnews.eu/kate-garraway-in-angry-gmb-showdown-with-lbc-presenter-over-damian-green-is-he-a-twit/ https://briefnews.eu/kate-garraway-in-angry-gmb-showdown-with-lbc-presenter-over-damian-green-is-he-a-twit/#respond Thu, 21 Dec 2017 09:02:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/kate-garraway-in-angry-gmb-showdown-with-lbc-presenter-over-damian-green-is-he-a-twit/

The journalist was branded “anti-politicians” by LBC presenter Iain Dale as they shouted over each other on the ITV show.

The 55-year-old friend of the MP appeared after it was revealed the first secretary of state and minister for the Cabinet Office had breached the ministerial code amid porn claims.

“No I haven’t spoken to him, I text him last night and he replied,” Dale said, before being asked what Green had said. “Texts are private.”

The political commentator continued: “Anyone who finds themselves in this position, you’ve got to have some basic human sympathy for them… he’s been brought down by the Metropolitan Police.”

However, Garraway, 50, was having none of it: “He’s been brought down by lying… he’s now a liar and you can’t have that. Why did he do it? Is he a bit of a twit?”

“You’ll have to ask him,” Dale replied. “I suspect he would have taken advice from people he maybe shouldn’t have done, but in the end the buck stops with him.

“There is no reason he shouldn’t stay on as an MP. You can’t have police officers trying to bring down cabinet ministers.”

Garraway – who was hosting alongside Ben Shephard – then shot down: “To be fair, they also had to clear their name,” but she was quickly interrupted. “No, not to be fair to them, they shouldn’t be doing it.”

As she suggested that the police had to say something, Dale shouted: “Kate, Kate! I know you’re very anti-politicians, there aren’t mistruths – well you are because all your talking about is Damian Green and what we should be talking about the scandal of the police trying to bring down a minister.”

Meanwhile, his fellow guest and former Conservative minister, David Mellor also stated: “I’m not defending him, I’m just simply saying that when the world gets up this morning will they care a tuppeny that Damian Green is no longer a member of cabinet?

“They didn’t know who he was in the first place. In this instance, it is a much more serious political situation for the public – they’ve got a Conservative party that has lost three cabinet members in six weeks.”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.

‘Thousands’ of porn images on Damian Green’s office computer, detective claims https://briefnews.eu/thousands-of-porn-images-on-damian-greens-office-computer-detective-claims/ https://briefnews.eu/thousands-of-porn-images-on-damian-greens-office-computer-detective-claims/#respond Fri, 01 Dec 2017 10:05:26 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/thousands-of-porn-images-on-damian-greens-office-computer-detective-claims/ Theresa May’s cabinet is facing yet another setback as her effective deputy Damian Green has been accused of “extensively engaging with” pornographic material in his Commons office. The allegations date back to 2008.

A former Scotland Yard detective said he was shocked by the “thousands” of pornographic images he allegedly discovered on Green’s computer at the time Green was the Tories’ immigration spokesman in opposition. Officer Neil Lewis says he examined the device as part of an inquiry into government leaks, but had never spoken about it before.

In his first broadcast interview on the investigation, Lewis told the BBC: “The shocking thing as I was viewing it, I noticed a lot of pornography – thumbnails, which indicated web browsing. There was a lot of them. I was surprised to see that on a parliament computer. I had to take a step back because I wasn’t expecting that.”

But contrary to previous reports, he said the pictures were not extreme and did not feature images of children or sexual abuse.

It comes as a fresh Cabinet Office inquiry has been launched into allegations of sexual misconduct among Westminster MPs, with Green facing accusations of making inappropriate advances on party activist Kate Maltby.

Green, the PM’s right-hand man as First Secretary of State, insists he never watched or downloaded pornography on the computer. Neil said there is no question the device he inspected in 2008 belonged to Green.

“The computer was in Mr Green’s office, on his desk, logged in, his account, his name,” said Lewis, who at the time was working as a computer forensics examiner for SO15, the counter-terrorism command.

“In between browsing pornography, he was sending emails from his account, his personal account, reading documents… it was ridiculous to suggest anybody else could have done it.”

A spokesperson for Green said: “It would be inappropriate for Mr Green to comment on these allegations while the Cabinet Office investigation is ongoing. However, from the outset he has been very clear that he never watched or downloaded pornography on the computers seized from his office.

“He maintains his innocence of these charges and awaits the outcome of the investigation.”

Lewis, who spent 25 years with the Metropolitan Police before retiring in 2014, said he was forced to delete the data on the computer copies he had made after the leaks inquiry came to an end.

The former detective said he followed instructions and erased the data, but kept copies so experts could retrieve it if they ever needed to. He suggested, however, that all the items may have been deleted now.

Damian Warner held onto his lead to capture gold at the Decastar event in Talence, France, on Sunday, with a total of 8252 points.

Kai Kazmirek of Germany climbed one spot to finish second with 8020, while Ukraine’s Oleksiy Kasyanov slipped to third with 8016.

Warner posted the fastest time in the 110-metre hurdles at 13.81 seconds to extend his lead after six events.

The London, Ont., native then placed seventh in the discus throw with a distance of 42.70m, allowing Kasyanov to briefly gain some ground with the best throw at 46.99.

Warner finished 10th in pole vault, but was able to maintain his spot at the top of the leaderboard.

The 27-year-old rounded out the competition by finishing ninth in both the javelin and 1500m to secure the win.

Stomach troubles a thing of the past

Warner was competing for the first time since a fifth-place finish last month at the world championships where he caught a stomach bug that also impacted other members of the Canadian team, including marathon runner Eric Gillis.

At the time, CBC Sports analyst David Moorcroft said that Warner is a force to be reckoned with when healthy.

“He didn’t look himself [at world championships] and he made a valiant attempt to win a medal, but it wasn’t meant to be.

“He is a class act and a fully fit Damian will still be hard to beat on the world stage,” Moorcroft said.

Damian Warner is in fifth place with two events remaining in the decathlon at the track and field world championships in London.

Javelin (12:30 p.m. ET) and the 1500-metre race (3:45 p.m) will take place Saturday afternoon, which you can watch live on CBCSports.ca

Warner started his second day of competition by clocking the fastest time in the 110-metre hurdles to move into third overall.

The Canadian, who is recovering from a stomach bug that has plagued other athletes at the event, recorded a time of 13.63 seconds in the hurdles.

However, Warner’s ninth-place result in his group in the discus throw (40.67 metres) dropped him back to fifth.

In the last event of the morning session, Warner cleared a season’s-best 4.70m in pole vault, but missed all three of his attempts at 4.80 to finish fourth in his group and maintain fifth overall at 6867 points.

Kevin Mayer of France remains in the lead with 7237 points, Rico Freimuth of Germany is next with 7121, while German teammate Kai Kazmirek moved up to third with 7021.

Warner fell ill earlier in the week with the viral gastroenteritis that has affected 40 athletes at the meet so far, and spent Tuesday and Wednesday quarantined in his hotel room.

The 27-year-old said Friday’s five events — 100m, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400 — were draining.

“It took a lot of energy out of me. I felt [it] in the 100 metres,” the 27-year-old told CBC Sports.

On Friday, Warner ran a season-best time of 47.47 seconds in the 400, moving into fourth place in the final event of the day.

“I’m hoping that I can put a special day [Saturday],” he said.

Warner is chasing his first decathlon world title after taking the silver medal in 2015 and bronze in 2013. He claimed bronze at last year’s Olympics. American Ashton Eaton, who is now retired, won gold each time.

Two days after being quarantined for a stomach bug, Canada’s Damian Warner is within striking distance of a decathlon medal at the world track and field championships

Despite feeling fatigued, Warner remains in the medal hunt as he stands in fourth place, 14 points from a podium spot.

Warner fell ill earlier in the week with the viral gastroenteritis that has affected 40 athletes at the meet so far, and spent Tuesday and Wednesday quarantined in his hotel room.

The 27-year-old said Friday’s five events — 100 metres, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400 metres — were draining.

“It took a lot of energy out of me. I felt in the 100 metres,” the 27-year-old told CBC Sports.

Still, the London, Ont., native is in a good spot to grab a medal for Canada at the world championships.

Kevin Mayer of France leads the way with 4,478 points and is followed by two Germans: Kai Kazmirek (4,421) and Rico Freimuth (4,361). Warner is next at 4,347.

“For him to be in fourth place is actually pretty remarkable,” said CBC Sports analyst Anson Henry. “Being quarantined and not being able to eat the way you want, train the way you want can have huge effects on your performance. I could visible see that he had no power or acceleration out of the blocks in his 100 metres. And he could not explode off of the board in the long jump: two of his strong events. The effect of the sickness is very apparent, and he’s still in medal contention? That’s crazy.”

The 27-year-old  took the early lead Friday by running the top time in the opening stage, the 100 (10.50 seconds).

But he fell to second in the standings after tying for the 11th-best leap in the long jump (7.44 metres).

The final five events — 110 hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin, 1,500 — of the decathlon go Saturday (CBCSports.ca, 4:50 a.m. ET).

“He’s had some bad luck, so with that, the competitors ahead of him can have some bad luck as well,” said Henry. “He’s going to have to have some near flawless performances and need a few mistakes from his competitors. Gold is still within reach, but the podium as a whole is still definitely within reach.”
