Charlie Hunnam was originally set to play Christian Grey in the erotic trilogy, before he bowed out of the role due to an overloaded schedule. But in a new interview, he’s revealed that the money he would have made from taking the role alongside Dakota Johnson would have been “so much”. That job – and, presumably, that salary – ultimately went to Dornan.

Hunnam told CinemaBlend last year: “Well, I’d be a lot wealthier [if I kept the role]. I’d be a lot wealthier.

“I was gonna get paid a fortune. So much.”

Now, in a more recent interview with Newsweek, he has reflected on the whole situation – admitting he hasn’t seen any of those films.

“I don’t see myself in that role at all because it would have been totally different,” he said.

“I think what acting is, is trying to create a character and you put half of yourself into it, [a] bit more than half.

“So that’s Jamie Dornan’s character, you know? I haven’t seen them but I’m sure he did an excellent job.”

He elaborated: “I started to realise that my, my vision of who that guy was, was not everybody else’s vision.

“You can’t get into a film, let alone three films, totally at odds with the rest of the filmmaking community or the creative community involved in something because it’s just going to be [a] miserable experience.

“It was better for me just to extract myself from the process, but no regrets.”

Hunnam has since gone on to star in the likes of Triple Frontier, Papillon alongside Rami Malek and Crimson Peak.

Dornan, meanwhile, has recently appeared in Robin Hood and A Private War.

His co-star Johnson has starred in the likes of Suspiria and Bad Times At The El Royale.

Best Gay Scene went to God’s Own Country; and the moment between Josh O’Connor and Alec Secareanu.

Could the daughter of Don Johnson and Melanie Griffiths swap S&M games for the PVC and leather of DC’s sexiest superhero?

Dakota Johnson is currently starring in the terrifying and controversial horror movie Suspiria, from Call Me By Your Name director Luca Guardagnino.

Robbie and Warner Bros are still in the early stages of casting and pre-production on Birds of Prey. The movie will unite some of DC’s most iconic female villains, from Robbie’s Harley Quinn to Poison Ivy, Huntress and Canary.

But what about Catwoman? Michelle Pfeiffer, Halle Berry and Anne Hathaway have already put their stamps on the role, but could Johnson be the purr-fect choice?

Johnson spilled her Catwoman hopes during a video interview with Vanity Fair. This particular format makes the stars take a lie detector test as they are asked various probing questions.

Asked if she would consider a Marvel movie role and if so which one, the actress immediately said: “Yes. Catwoman.”

She immediately realised it is a DC not a Marvel role but her speedy and unhesitating response has raised eyebrows – and hopes. The star also opened up about how she felt filming sexy Fifty Shades scenes and how much she has in common with her iconic character, Anastasia.

So far, Birds of Prey has cast Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya and Jurnee Smollet-Bell as Black Canary.

It is unclear whether the Suicide Squad spin-off will incorporate Quinn’s villanous love, Jared Leto’s divisive Joker.

Nor has teher been any indication yet whether Catwoman will make an appearance.

With the DCEU undergoing major shifts, Johnson could also be perfect for the upcoming The Batman movie, which may still star Ben Affleck but is also reported to be aiming for a look at the earlier years of the Caped Crusader.

During the Vanity fair lie detector test, Johnson also opens up about Fifty Shades.

She reveals she does not have anything in common with Anastasia and then that she does. She is clearer when she dellares they do not like the same kinds of men and that she found filming some of the scenes very “awkward”.

Could we be witnessing the rise of another iconic director/actor pairing in real time? Director Luca Guadagnino has worked with actress Dakota Johnson twice already with A Bigger Splash and this year’s Suspiria, and now the filmmaker wants Johnson to co-star in his planned sequel to the 2017 indie Call Me By Your Name.

Scorsese and De Niro. Carpenter and Russell. Hitchcock and Stewart. Wright and Pegg. Will “Guadagnino and Johnson” eventually be added to that list?

The news about Guadagnino wanting Johnson to appear in Call Me By Your Name 2 comes from a New Yorker profile on the Italian director (via IndieWire), in which the interviewer was present for a conversation between Guadagnino and actor Armie Hammer, who played CMBYN‘s Oliver, an American exchange student who gets swept up in a deeply passionate summer romance with Timothee Chalamet‘s Elio. The director revealed that he wanted Johnson to play Oliver’s wife in the sequel.

“She has to be a New England kind of hoochie woman,” [Guadagnino] said, riffing merrily. “You have, maybe, five children.”

“Oh, great,” Hammer said.

“The only problem is the title,” Guadagnino reflected. “It cannot be Call Me by Your Name Two.”

That’s the extent of the profile’s info about the sequel, but it’s a nice tease for a project that many, including Chalamet and Hammer, hope comes to fruition. Both actors have previously expressed interest in returning to reprise their roles for a story that takes place years after the original movie – Chalamet recently referred to the sequel’s planned time jump as “the Boyhood style of storytelling.”

Like Kristen Stewart before her, Johnson has already proven that she’s not willing to be defined by the romance franchise that took her career to another level. Here’s hoping that she actually has some interesting layers to play in this story, assuming everything goes according to plan.

Earlier this year, Guadagnino revealed that he was already hard at work coming up with the story:

“I’m already conceiving the story with [Call Me By Your Name author] André Aciman, and it’s gonna happen five or six years afterwards, so almost in 1990. It’s gonna be a new movie, a different tone. You’ll see a lot of the East Coast of America – they’re going to go around the world.”

And if you’re already swooning over the idea of seeing Oliver and Elio reunite, get pumped, because Guadagnino might not stop at just one sequel: he could turn this into an ongoing film franchise:

“These characters are so fantastic, and I want to know what happens to them. The last 40 pages of the book tell you about 20 years in the life of Oliver and Elio. So I started to think about Michael Apted’s Up, and the cycle of films [Francois] Truffaut devoted to the character of Antoine Doinel. And I thought, maybe it’s not a question of sequel, it’s a question of chronicling everyone in this film. I think seeing these characters growing in the bodies of these actors will be quite fantastic.”

There’s no indication yet of when production on this movie will begin, but the filmmaker previously hinted that it might be ready as soon as 2020, which would align Chalamet’s real-life age with the age Elio is supposed to be in the sequel.

In a new interview, the former Fifty Shades Freed star showcased her famous sense of humour as she discussed Hemsworth’s shirtless moment in the upcoming thriller.

“Oh my god. It’s such a distraction,” she quipped to Vogue Australia.

“I was like, guys, you’ve made a huge mistake getting him to do this, because everyone is going to forget everything that happened [in the film] until this point.”

She added: “Chris is going to come onto the screen, and his body is outrageous, it’s unbelievable, like a crazy, crazy thing to look at, and his shirt’s completely unbuttoned.

“No-one on set could pay attention to anything else: it was so shocking, not in a sexual way at all, just, like, scientifically, how is it possible to look like that? Crazy!

“Then he would eat a bowl of Smarties and you’re like: ‘You’re an a**hole, f**k you!’

“I don’t eat anything sweet: I eat green things for three months in order to fit into a pair of jeans.

“And he eats whatever the f**k he wants and looks like he was literally chiselled out of marble – it’s insane.”

Bad Times At The El Royale is one of two fairly tense movies Johnson has in the pipeline between now and the end of the year.

The other is the arthouse horror Suspiria; due for release in November after causing quite a stir in early screenings.

In fact early reviews for it have been decidedly mixed, with some even allegedly walking out well before the end credits.

“It’s a true work of art on [director Luca Guadagnino’s] part,” the star recently told the Inquirer.

“I am thrilled to be a part of it. Of course, it’s nice to be involved in a film where everybody leaves the theatre happy, but then, do they go home and talk about it?”

She continued: “It’s a privilege to be involved in a film where people want to argue about what’s happening, because it’s really time for art to express the things that we need to express.

“People are ready for it. It’s an interesting moment, especially in cinema.

“And the fact that it’s a film with a cast of 40 women, but it is still controversial—perhaps we do need to focus on other things?”

The latter movie is a divisive horror remake, set to leave audiences seriously unsettled when it releases later this year.

It sees Johnson playing a dancer, and the training for it was so intense that she had to begin it six months prior to filming.

During those six months, she was working with Jamie Dornan on the relentlessly steamy Fifty Shades finale in Vancouver.

“It was amazing to discover that I could do that with my body, but it was a lot of work, it was a lot of training,” she told Reuters.

“I worked for six months before filming.”

She added: “I was filming another movie in Vancouver, the third Fifty Shades movie, and I would go after work or before to train with the trainer.”

Suspiria is set to take its toll on cinemagoers with its gory content and slow-burning tension – a complete change of pace from the EL James erotic trilogy.

But Johnson recently confirmed that previous claims she made about going to therapy after filming it may have been misunderstood.

“First of all, I was not psychoanalysed and I hope I never will be,” she said, as reported by Digital Spy.

“I find sometimes when I work on a project and — I don’t have any shame in this — I’m a very porous person and I absorb a lot of people’s feelings.

“When you’re working sometimes with dark subject matter, it can stay with you and then to talk to somebody really nice about it afterwards is a really nice way to move on from the project.

“My therapist is a really nice woman.”

She added: “It [filming] was the most fun and the most exhilarating and the most joyful that it could be.

“It’s mischievous and play[ful] and I love it more than anything. It wasn’t that this film sent me to a ward, I just have a lot of feelings.”

Suspiria has had a mixed reception from critics thus far: its Rotten Tomatoes score stands at 53%.

Suspiria is out on November 16.

Now, with those Jamie Dornan co-starring efforts behind her, attention turns to her next release: Suspiria, which has recently wrapped production.

Directed by Luca Guadagnino and co-starring Tilda Swinton and Chloe Grace Moretz, it’s a reboot of the 1977 film of the same name – about a young aspiring dancer (Johnson) who attends a prestigious academy, only to discover its dark secrets.

Speaking to Elle, she said the film “no lie, f**ked me up so much that I had to go to therapy”.

With no confirmed release date, the drama is expected to land at some point in the second half of 2018 via Amazon Studios.

In the same interview, Johnson spoke about how the projects she would love to work on don’t currently exist.

“I’ve come to terms with the fact that the projects I want to work on don’t exist, so I’m going to have to create them for myself,” she explained.

“I feel incredibly grateful that I’m in a position to do that.

“There are many more experiences to have. It’s really good to still be learning the thing I love.”

Johnson’s other upcoming credits include The Peanut Butter Falcon, and an untitled thriller alongside Armie Hammer and Zazie Beetz.

The movie began principle photography earlier this month and is said to be on a fast-track for release next March.

The erotic movie – filmed concurrently with predecessor Fifty Shades Darker – sees Dornan and Johnson playing Christian Grey and Ana Steele for the final time.

Speaking in an official interview for the movie, shared on YouTube, Dornan reflected on his experiences of working with Johnson.

“The humour of it, the heartbreak of it, the incredulousness of it. The struggle to understand Christian.

Johnson, in her own one-to-one interview, was similarly complimentary about him.

“If we didn’t get along it would have been so heartbreaking because the reason why we have a special relationship on screen is because we have an even more special relationship off-screen,” she explained.

Johnson’s upcoming projects include a thriller with Armie Hammer, said to be fast-tracked for release in 2019.

She’s also currently shooting alongside Chris Hemsworth, while Dornan will shortly be seen in a new telling of Robin Hood.

The thriller is about a New Orleans bartender (Hammer) whose life starts to fall apart when he picks up a phone left behind at his bar.

Zazie Beetz, who will be introduced to a wider audience as a key player in Deadpool 2 this summer, is also on board.

Fifty Shades was a great launchpad for Johnson; shooting to an overall trilogy gross of over $ 1 billion.

She’s also set to star in Peanut Butter Falcon, an indie movie opposite Shia LaBeouf, and the intriguing Suspiria.

Fifty Shades Freed, meanwhile, will land on DVD and Blu-ray on June 18.

Luckily the actress was only kidding when she referred to her Fifty Shades Freed co-star as “rude” – and it’s a perfect example of the jovial rapport the two actors clearly have with one another.

Fifty Shades Freed remains in rotation at cinemas worldwide, after making an impressive debut at the box office last month.

Its performance has been slightly weaker than last year’s Fifty Shades Darker, but it has helped nudge it to over $ 1.25 billion for the whole trilogy.

It’s not all been good news: last week Darker was among the ‘winners’ at the Razzie Awards.

Kim Basinger won Worst Supporting Actress, while the movie also won Worst Remake, Sequel or Rip-Off.

Fifty Shades Freed is out now.
