It’s no secret that Overwatch players are precious about the game’s balance changes. On the internet, fans act as armchair game devs, flooding the Overwatch forums with strongly-worded opinions whenever there’s an unpopular or surprising change. Most recently, the forums overflowed with salt after the popular tank hero D.va received a brutal nerf, making her far less powerful. For months, players begged Blizzard to revive the old D.va.

At an Overwatch anniversary event in New York on Wednesday, Overwatch game director Jeff Kaplan told me that his personal “low point of the year” was tied to that balance patch. But he does not regret nerfing D.va. His low point, he says, was leaving her overpowered too long.

Late last year, the Overwatch team gave the hero D.va a huge buff. She became an agile fighter, more mobile while firing her gun. Her mech suit’s health skyrocketed from 100 to 200. And it became much easier to charge her ultimate ability, which often kills two or three enemies at a time. In the patch notes, the Overwatch team explained that the changes would help the tank hero “withstand attacks, which will allow her to keep pressuring enemies.”

Overwatch

Then, Blizzard turned off its lights for Christmas, postponing any balance changes for at least a few weeks. “People were burned out,” Kaplan said. He and Overwatch’s seven other designers took a vacation to visit their families over the holidays, when Blizzard essentially shuts down. Of course, Kaplan and Overwatch’s dev team didn’t take a vacation from games, or, apparently, from looking at Overwatch play data. D.va was way overpowered. She had become too essential to the meta and too difficult to kill.

“We [Overwatch lead designer Geoff Goodman and I] were literally talking through Steam chat about how we’re gonna nerf D.va and as soon as we got back,” Kaplan said. (He wondered whether Valve president Gabe Newell was reading his chats, laughing, “All Blizzard secrets are probably available in Steam chat.”)

Overwatch

Players got used to D.va’s strength over that Christmas break. So, in January, when Blizzard nerfed her, the forums went mad. Popular complaints described the new D.va as squishy, ineffective and not a true tank hero. Kaplan doesn’t regret the nerf, though. Of her current state, Kaplan says, “D.va is totally fine.”

In a few instances, the Overwatch team has been quick to roll back dramatic changes after strong player feedback. In March, Bastion received a huge boost that Blizzard reversed just a few days later. Players barely had a chance to learn how to counter him. It’s easy to forget that there’s a learning curve after developers make big changes. Describing his decision to scale down Bastion’s power, Kaplan wrote in an Overwatch forum post, “Balance changes can be very difficult to make when emotions run so high in the community.”

But why was Bastion scaled back so quickly? “Part of the quick response to Bastion, it’s sort of like, D.va’s our Alamo,” Kaplan said today. “If we put something in and leave it for too long, the players will gravitate towards that and it’s going to be hard to back people off.”

D.Va Heroes of the Storm debut begins as Blizzard reveal patch notes for Overwatch hero https://briefnews.eu/d-va-heroes-of-the-storm-debut-begins-as-blizzard-reveal-patch-notes-for-overwatch-hero/ https://briefnews.eu/d-va-heroes-of-the-storm-debut-begins-as-blizzard-reveal-patch-notes-for-overwatch-hero/#respond Tue, 09 May 2017 03:23:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/d-va-heroes-of-the-storm-debut-begins-as-blizzard-reveal-patch-notes-for-overwatch-hero/

D.Va’s Heroes of the Storm inclusion was confirmed during the launch of the game’s 2.0 update last month.

And now the new Overwatch character can be found playable as part of the most recent Heroes of the Storm patch available on the Public Test Realm.

The latest Blizzard game build will be available for playtesting until May 15, with the studio requesting assistance in trying out some of the new content it contains before its official release.

The biggest part of the new Heroes of the Storm patch notes is D.Va, with her full abilities mapped out below:

Hana Song, also known as D.Va: A world champion professional gamer and a burgeoning global icon. As a member of South Korea’s elite MEKA unit, she fights to protect her homeland from the colossal omnic threat lurking within the East China Sea.

A full release date for the new Heroes of the Storm patch has yet to be revealed by Blizzard and will likely depend on how many glitches and bugs are caught by fans in the coming week.

Other Heroes of the Storm patch notes highlights includes D.Va and Genji being added to the announcers list, as well as new mounts, bundles and skins being confirmed.

Heroes of the Storm 2.0 Nexus Challenge reaches week 2, D.Va Overwatch bonuses going LIVE https://briefnews.eu/heroes-of-the-storm-2-0-nexus-challenge-reaches-week-2-d-va-overwatch-bonuses-going-live/ https://briefnews.eu/heroes-of-the-storm-2-0-nexus-challenge-reaches-week-2-d-va-overwatch-bonuses-going-live/#respond Tue, 02 May 2017 01:17:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/heroes-of-the-storm-2-0-nexus-challenge-reaches-week-2-d-va-overwatch-bonuses-going-live/

Following its release last week, Blizzard has confirmed the list of new Heroes of the Storm 2.0 rewards that can be earned through the Nexus Challenge.

This week’s looks set to be the most sought-after, with Heroes of the Storm players now able to grab that Overwatch Officer D.Va skin.

Other HotS bonuses include the Busan Police Hovercycle Mount, with a total of four quests set to go live until the new challenge ends on May 22.

The Overwatch Officer D.Va skin can be used in Overwatch and was one of the main standout reveals from the 2.0 launch event.

Fans will need to complete 5 more games with a friend in Quick Match, Unranked, or Ranked to earn the new Overwatch PC bonus.

Last week’s Heroes of the Storm Nexus Challenge Quest was all about getting some good gear for Genji, who was recently added to the character roster.

Hero rewards included: Orochi Hovercycle Mount (6 color variations), Oni Genji Warbanner, Oni Spray and Oni Genji Portrait.

For Overwatch, there was the Oni Genji Skin, Oni Genji Player Icon and Oni Genji Spray.

In-game rewards in both Heroes of the Storm and Overwatch are offered to players who complete games while partied with a friend.

D.Va is confirmed as the next character to be crossing over to Heroes of the Storm at a later date.

Here’s more information on how the new Nexus Challenge 2.0 will run:

  • A new quest will begin each week during the Nexus Challenge 2.0 event.
  • Only one Nexus Challenge 2.0 quest will activate in players’ Quest Logs at any given time.
  • Subsequent quests will not appear until their start dates have passed, and all of the player’s previous Nexus Challenge 2.0 quests have been completed.
  • For example: Players who wait until the final day of the event to begin their Nexus Challenge 2.0 quests (not recommended!) can still complete all four quests, but must do so one at a time.

Remaining Quest Chain 2.0 and Overwatch Rewards:

Quest 2: Starts after May 2

  • Complete 5 more games with a friend in Quick Match, Unranked, or Ranked.
  • Overwatch Rewards: Officer D.Va Skin.
  • Heroes Rewards: Busan Police Hovercycle Mount.

Quest 3: Starts after May 9

  • Complete 5 more games with a friend in Quick Match, Unranked, or Ranked.
  • Overwatch Rewards: Officer D.Va Portrait and Spray.
  • Heroes Rewards: Overwatch Nexagon Mount, Officer D.Va Banner, Portrait, and Spray.

Quest 4: Starts after May 16

  • Complete 5 more games with a friend in Quick
  • Overwatch Rewards: 10 Loot Boxes.
  • Heroes Rewards: 10 Loot Chests (one of which is Rare).

A short tweet also appeared on Blizzard Entertainment’s official Twitter:

Over on Battle.net, Blizzard provided more details, explaining why D.Va has been temporarily disabled. You can read the official statement below:

Following the release of today’s 1.10.1 patch, we’ve seen a significant rise in the number of reported client crashes. Based on our investigation, we’ve determined these crashes are very likely connected to D.Va’s presence within a game.

Due to the impact of this issue, we have temporarily disabled D.Va in all regions on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One as a precaution while we continue to troubleshoot. We don’t have an ETA to share right now for when D.Va will again be playable, but this is currently our top priority and we will be sure to provide updates in this thread as they become available.

Sincere apologies for the inconvenience, and thank you so much for your patience!

With no ETA yet on when she’ll return, people online have been reacting to the decision:

Many people, especially those who use D.Va as their main, are not happy.

Those who play against D.Va, however, do sound pleased.

D.va From Overwatch Has Become A Symbol of Hope In Real Life https://briefnews.eu/d-va-from-overwatch-has-become-a-symbol-of-hope-in-real-life/ https://briefnews.eu/d-va-from-overwatch-has-become-a-symbol-of-hope-in-real-life/#respond Thu, 09 Feb 2017 14:50:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/d-va-from-overwatch-has-become-a-symbol-of-hope-in-real-life/

According to Overwatch lore, D.va is a pro gamer who serves and inspires her country. In real life, D.va’s role is starting to mirror her in-game persona, as she becomes a symbol of hope for women in South Korea.

While millions protested and gathered worldwide for the Women’s March on January 20th, sharp-eyed fans such as Tumblr user Nisat noticed Korean events had a familiar sight:

It was the work of “For D.va,” (also known as National D.va Association), a group of 140 members across South Korea who use D.va as a mascot. In an email, For D.va staff member “Nine” said that the group initially started last November to protest former president Park Geun Hye. The group was opposed to how Park Geun Hye often used the excuse of being a woman to dodge criticism, as well as being deeply embroiled in corruption scandals. In response, South Korea held many protests, and For D.va participated in solidarity with other feminists.

After the president resigned due to corruption charges, For D.va stayed together to discuss and promote gender equality within the gaming scene. “We just want people to treat women as equal human beings, so that we don’t have to listen to swear words or sexually harassing statements nearly every time we play games” said For D.Va’s anonymous president. The group’s activities aren’t limited to just political marches, either. They’ve been holding a bi-weekly feminist book club, and are in the process organizing an Overwatch tournament for women and genderqueer folks.

While South Korea is world-renowned for producing top players in games like League of Legends and Starcraft II, those accomplishments mask what For D.va characterize as a deep and pervasive misogyny within their gaming circles. “Korea has such a big name in gaming due to the esports scene but it’s always about men, the fact there’s so many women and they are invisible in this is sad,” mused Dewie, one of the female Korean Overwatch players I spoke to. For D.va’s mascot is aspirational because she manages to thrive in that culture despite being a woman. “We decided to act for feminism under [D.va’s] emblem, so that in 2060 (when the Overwatch takes place), someone like D.Va could actually appear.”  For them, Overwatch’s decision to make D.va a top Starcraft 2 player is of grave importance. “In a sexist country like ours, it would be impossible for a person like [D.va] to appear, especially after the case of Gegury.”

The “Geguri incident” refers to an extremely talented 17-year old female Overwatch player who was reported to Blizzard for “cheating”: male gamers believed she was too good with tank character Zarya. Blizzard cleared her of the charges, but even so, Geguri felt compelled to defend herself by doing an hour-long stream where she could show off her skills to skeptical onlookers. By the end, she was visibly stressed and crying from the toll of the accusations.

According to For D.va, this kind of treatment isn’t limited to high-profile pros: in South Korea, women frequently get harassed over chat. “It is almost a routine for women gamers to listen to insults, especially sexual ones such as ‘bitch’ or ‘whore’. It is a common idea in Korea that women can’t play games well and women in high ranks would have reached that level by using hacks or by flirting to other men,” Nine explained, saying that it was “like a kind of hell.”

Other Korean women who play games shared similar stories of hostile atmospheres that made it hard to enjoy online games. “Almost every time [male players] know my sex, [they] become meaner and insulting,” a player named Sab said. “They keep calling me “Nuna” which is what little brothers call their older sis in Korean, and say, “Nuna, do you even know how to play?”

Obviously, problems like this exist in the West too, but according to players like Dewie—who grew up in America and now lives in South Korea—it’s worse in the east. “Being a gamer for a pretty long time, I have encountered lots of sexual harassment in-game so I usually pretended to be a guy. I even grew used to the sexual harassment and easily ignored them [in America], but here in Korea the harassment is way too extreme for me to simply ignore it.” She described instances where men would constantly make comments about her being slut or how her “vagina was a rag,” all of which contributed to her feeling like she was losing her faith in the gaming community.

“If [even] Geguri, who is Grandmaster [rank] gets sexually harassed I can’t imagine how it is for the lower tiers.” Dewie added.

Even D.va herself can receive terrible treatment. While the character is beloved by many, players I spoke to expressed discomfort in the way men treated D.va in-game. “The way Korean guys treat [D.va] shows how they think about women…even the way they love her, most females hate it,” Sab said. As an example, D.va’s Year of the Rooster costume—a modern hanbok design—has got some Korean men constantly trying to look up her skirt as a humiliation tactic against opponents. In a video put out by a Korean “BJ” (broadcast jockey, akin to what we call “streamers”), he shows himself attacking another person playing D.va and trying to look up her skirt:

“Underpants?”

Sab mentioned experiencing this skirt harassment first-hand. “Korean are still try to blow (up) her Hanbok skirt…(they) say ‘I fucked her!’ after they kill D.va in game.” In a way, For D.va is a reclamation effort for Korean feminists.

The importance of feminism within South Korea’s gaming scene takes on gravitas when set against the backdrop of the country’s general culture. Gamers, much like here in the United States, aren’t uniquely sexist so much as they are an outgrowth of structural issues with how Korean women are treated. For D.va isn’t an isolated feminist group with a catchy icon, but part of a larger wave of feminist activism in South Korea, one of the most notable groups being Megalia4, a radical feminist group that has made headlines multiple times. For D.va’s work operates within that climate.

Unfortunately, much like feminists in our own gaming communities, the group has started experiencing backlash. In the west, we’re familiar with right-wing message boards frequented by rabid anti-feminist gamers, like 4Chan or certain sectors of Reddit. Instead of 4Chan, Koreans have to deal with places like Ilbe, as well other popular message boards such as Daum Cafe and Todayhumor. Responses have ranged from calls for violently shooting D.va fans down, insults, and ample use of the word “megal”, a term similar to “feminazi” (referring to the aforementioned Megalia4.) Still, for all of the friction that the group faces, they’ve received an overwhelming amount of positive support from female gamers worldwide who are happy to embrace this mixture of gaming and politics.

“Raising awareness about this issue could finally shine light on…how serious this is. That’s why I think this organization is really good for the female gaming community all around the world.” Dewie explained.

While some of the South Korean gaming community seems entrenched in sexism, For D.va has an advocacy plan with a vision for the future of women. Maybe For D.va will pave the way for a safer and more welcoming place in games a lot sooner than 2060.
