If you are a regular cruise holiday-goer, then Channel 4 documentary ‘Cruises From Hell’ would have made horrifying viewing.

The programme met with holidaymakers who had been caught up in horrifying experiences on their cruise trips.

One couple detailed the moment their cruise liner was caught up in a bomb cyclone on their way back from the Bahamas.

Revealing how clueless the couple were as to the situation, they said: “We didn’t really realise what was about to come.”

Video footage they took before the weather really hit showed them laughing about it “raining”.

But the light rain soon turned nasty, leaving the couple thinking they were “going to die”.

Their ship had been caught up in a bomb cyclone – a rare and unlucky occurrence.

Simon Rowell, meteorologist for the British Sailing Team, explained bomb cyclones, and said: “If you have air converging into the middle at the bottom, and air rising in the middle, and then air going out at the top – if all three of those things happen at the same time then what you’re going to have is an explosive cyclogenesis.

“This is a ‘bomb cyclone’ thing, this ‘weather bomb’ effect, and it picks up really quickly.”

The couple continued: “I’ve never felt more scared and there was no one to reassure me that it was going to be ok.

“We sat inside the window and it seemed grey and dark and rough looking, and it was for miles, there was no land, no sign of brightness, no other ships.

“I just had in my mind ‘the boat’s going to capsize, will we get in to a lifeboat? I’m going to die here with my family’ and it was the most frightening experience of my life I suppose.”

While most cruise journeys are trouble free, this is not the first horror story from recent years involving poor weather conditions.

Passenger Jessica Grace posted a video showing a P&O Australia ship during a storm, with doors being slammed open as the liner battled strong waves.

It also showed the huge waves outside the window as well as the swimming pools overflowing as they rocked.

Other passengers reportedly struggling to get around the ship and stay upright.

She told Daily Mail Australia: “Everyone walking is being thrown around seen several people thrown into walls while walking.”

Huge water surges attack the ship, rocking it as it fights to stay upright.

In one particularly heart-stopping moment, the person filming takes a step back into the ship to stay safe.

The “bomb cyclone” that battered the north-east of the United States in the past week was not the proverbial ill wind. It blasted away enough sand to reveal the wreckage of a ship that dates back to the 1700s.

Huge waves dredged up what remains of the historic ship at Short Sands Beach in York, Maine. The city’s police department shared photos of the wreck on its Facebook page. “Every once in a while after a storm the ocean moves enough sand for it to be seen,” the police wrote.

Historian Sharon Cummins writes in local website Seacoast Online that the wreck was first seen in 1958, but it was quickly swallowed again by the sands. It reappears occasionally after particularly strong storms.

Archaeologist Leith Smith said the 15-meter-long and four-meter-wide ship is believed to be a coastal trading vessel that was used between 1750 and 1850. “It was the 18-wheeler of the day,” Smith told CNN.

New research indicates that the wreckage may have been from a ship called the ‘Industry,’ which set sail in 1769. “It was probably driven on shore by a storm and pushed so far on the sand that they couldn’t refloat it,” he said.

The Maine Historic Preservation Commission researcher plans to do more testing on the wreck before it is once again reclaimed by the sands of time.

Cyclone Gita is expected to cause huge travel disruptions in New Zealand according to latest reports.

The category 5 tropical storm is due to hit the south island tomorrow morning.

It has already caused damage in regions in Tonga and Samoa, with the MetService warning it was “expected to bring a period of high-impact severe weather to many parts of central New Zealand”. 

The MetService warning reads: “Heavy rain will cause slips, rapidly rising streams and rivers, and flooding. 

“Severe gales with damaging gusts are expected, so people are advised to secure property and items that may be blown away by strong winds.”

Parts of the West Coast, as well as Nelson and Wellington, could be hit with as much as 100 millimetres of rainfall in just 24 hours.

Travel disruptions could affect British travellers who are flying in and out of the country.

Air New Zealand issued a travel alert on their website stating: “We are anticipating significant disruption to our domestic network as well as some international services over the coming week.”

The airline also warned that passengers would not be reimbursed for additional costs in the case of a disruption such as hotels or meals.

They stated: “Any customer who chooses to commence their journey as planned must be advised that they do so at their own risk.”

Flights with the airline have not yet been affected or cancelled.

Singapore Airlines which also flies to Auckland and Christchurch were “closely monitoring the situation” although no flights are cancelled as of yet.

Citizens are urged to prepare for the worst, with the Civil Defence advising people in Marlborough to stock up on supplies.

Those who are staying in campers or boats are also warned to leave.

The storm could hit as early as tonight, with winds of over 150kmh according to the MetService.

The ‘bomb cyclone’ that froze the eastern seaboard of the US last week forced many to take extreme measures to stay warm and stay alive, including a group of rather inventive alligators in North Carolina.

Footage captured by the staff of the Shallotte River Swamp Park in Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina shows the somewhat surreal survival technique employed by the cold-blooded reptiles which allows them to be frozen in place in the park’s pond. Even the ‘bomb cyclone,’ which wrought havoc across the eastern seaboard of the US, couldn’t catch these crafty creatures off guard.  

The gators instinctively know when the water around them is about to freeze and raise their snouts at just the right time, allowing them to enter a state of brumation, a kind of hibernation that also involves slowing down an animal’s metabolism.

Videos showing the alligators “just hanging out in the water,” have garnered tens of thousands of views since they were published over the weekend.

The reptiles are capable of regulating their temperature in a variety of weather; as they are cold-blooded, they cannot generate their own body heat but they can regulate it, sometimes employing rather extreme measures to survive, as evidenced by the bizarre photos and videos above.

“Just shows you how smart they are, and how amazing it is to see them do this exact survival technique, no matter how horrific it looks to us humans,” park owner Linda McMullan wrote on Facebook.

Once warmer weather returns and melts the ice, the alligators will thermoregulate their body temperatures with a spot of sunbathing.

The park later posted an update video on January 9 to show the alligators swimming around after the ice had thawed.
