Russia’s cyclists and synchronized swimmers have continued the nation’s impressive performances at the European Championships, with the country sitting firmly atop the medals table as of Monday afternoon.

Russian synchronized swimmer Svetlana Kolesnichenko claimed victory in the technical solo event in Glasgow on Monday, bringing her country an 11th gold and 22nd medal in total at the event.

Kolesnichenko’s flawlessly executed routine was merited a score of 93,4816 – a full two points ahead of the second-placed Ukrainian athlete Yelyzaveta Yakhno. Italy’s Linda Cerruti completed the podium with a result of 90,2282 points.

So far Russia’s “mermaids” synchronized swimmers have taken gold in each event at the tournament apart from the combined free routine, which they opted to miss.

On Sunday, Russian cyclists Darya Shmeleva and Anastasia Voynova finished first and second respectively in the women’s track sprint.

The same day, five-time world champion Yulia Efimova took gold in the women’s 100m breaststroke event, ahead of 2012 Olympic champion Ruta Meilutyte of Lithuania, who settled for silver.

After four days of competition Russia tops the European Championships medals table with 11 golds, six silvers and five bronze.

Italy sits second with seven gold medals, while Great Britain rounds out the top three with six gold medals.

Ramming attack on foreign cyclists in Tajikistan may be terrorist act as shocking VIDEO released https://briefnews.eu/ramming-attack-on-foreign-cyclists-in-tajikistan-may-be-terrorist-act-as-shocking-video-released/ https://briefnews.eu/ramming-attack-on-foreign-cyclists-in-tajikistan-may-be-terrorist-act-as-shocking-video-released/#respond Mon, 30 Jul 2018 22:03:09 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ramming-attack-on-foreign-cyclists-in-tajikistan-may-be-terrorist-act-as-shocking-video-released/

A terrorist attack is being considered as a possible motive behind the deadly ramming of foreign cyclists in Tajikistan, police have said. A gruesome video of Sunday’s incident appears to confirm it was intentional.

“We are looking into all versions – accident, robbery… including a terrorist act,” Tajik Interior Minister Ramazon Rakhimzoda said during a briefing on the investigation of the incident, in which two Americans, a Dutch man and a Swiss citizen were killed.

“Although the investigation into the incident is still going on, there is proof that it was a deliberate attack,” the Information Officer at US Embassy in Dushanbe, Jeff Ridenour, told Asia-Plus.

“We condemn this severe act and we realize that the assailants do not represent the hospitable people of Tajikistan,” Ridenour added.

A video from the scene of the ramming, a rural area 90 kilometers southeast of Dushanbe, released by Radio Liberty, showed a black sedan making a U-turn seemingly after already hitting a group of cyclists and running them over once again.

The footage stops there but, according to reports, the driver and his passengers then got out of the car and assaulted the tourists with fire arms and knives, killing four of them and injuring three others.

Tajik law enforcers swiftly organized a large-scale manhunt and soon discovered a Daewoo Leganza vehicle, which they believed was involved in the ramming, in the nearby village of Torbulok.

A gunfight broke out as the suspects resisted arrest. The exchange of fire saw one of the men killed and one detained.

The three other perpetrators, including the driver of the car, managed to escape but were tracked down by security forces on Monday and “eliminated,” the Interior Ministry said. Those involved in the ramming were all young males, aged between 19 and 21 years.

The Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) terrorist organization has claimed responsibility for the attack on tourists in Tajikistan, SITE intelligence group reported on Monday. IS, however, routinely claims responsibility for high-profile attacks.

Tajikistan has been engulfed in a civil war against Islamist radicals between 1992 and 1997, which according to different estimates left between 20,000 and 60,000 dead. Last year, Asia-Plus reported that over a thousand Tajik citizens have been fighting in the ranks of Islamic State.

PARIS — Think Tour de France and you think bikes, but what keeps things moving behind the scenes for the teams in the world’s preeminent two-wheeled event are the countless cars, trucks, and buses following the race.

La Grande Boucle — the Great Loop — is often a grueling three-week slog, so the vehicles need to be versatile and reliable and always ready to go, over the bone-jarring cobblestones of Roubaix, up the steepest Pyrenean climbs, and down the superfast, twisty Alpine descents.

The EF Education–Drapac p/b Cannondale team invited Business Insider to check out its fleet at the Tour. Take a look at the vehicles up close and in action:

Daniel McMahon/Business Insider

Checking out the bikes and Tour tech is neat, but it’s also fun to poke around behind the scenes and hop into some of the cars. Above, the lead race car of the EF Education First–Drapac team for the 2018 Tour, the Škoda Superb, which has a 2-liter diesel engine with 180 horsepower — hardly a beast, yet a nimble enough wagon for a grand tour.

This model is a few years old, but the latest version of this car would cost in the neighborhood of £28,500 in the UK (about $ 37,350 USD).

Daniel McMahon/Business Insider

These EF-Drapac Škodas are basically the same as those sold to the public, but with the Tour cars the suspension is raised after purchase and the cars are rehomologated, or legally recertified. The normal suspension can’t cope with the weight of the coolers, bikes, gear, and racks, I’m told — they’d just bottom out.

The Czech carmaker Škoda is a wholly owned subsidiary of the German Volkswagen Group, and the Superb model is one of the most popular choices for Tour teams. Škoda is also the official car of the Tour, supplying 250 vehicles.

This is one of the team’s two cars that go in the race and follow the riders for the 21 stages and 2,000 or so miles around France.

Joshua Cunningham

May 16, 2018

In 2015, Joshua Cunningham rode his bike from London to Hong Kong. His journey took him some 12 months and 21,000 kilometers (13,000 miles), through 26 countries. Here, he shares some of the photographs and tales he collected along the way.

“It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best,” Ernest Hemingway once wrote, “since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them.”

The bicycle travel experience is one of complete immersion—in place, people, terrain, climate, culture and cuisine. By traveling through a region, as opposed to skipping between locations within it, you have yourself the opportunity to see everything the guidebooks literally miss out—and everything that they would actively choose to avoid too.

And as I made my way across the Eurasian landmass in 2015, the depth of Hemingway’s words became abundantly clear.

On the subject of time off the bike—whether it’s asking for directions, buying fruit and vegetables or refusing cheap tobacco, as a cycle tourist, you’re continuously meeting new people. Not only that, but cycle tourists will forever be indebted to the sheer kindness of strangers. Being the recipient of so much help and hospitality restores your faith in the world and its inhabitants; it’s nice to realize that most people are fundamentally good.

RELATED: Cycling around the world on $ 5 a day

For example, in Azerbaijan, Nile put us up for the night in his modest roadside café. He brought us hot tea, showed us a darkened backroom, plugged in a heater, and said goodnight before bringing us chocolate bars and more tea. We were complete strangers to him, but his hospitality was a lesson to both me and my traveling companion

On another occasion, after navigating through Europe, the plains of inland Turkey proved a challenge. The bitter chill of a still-wintry March, combined with the empty expanses and snow-capped peaks of the country’s interior plateau, made riding difficult. At least the riding was more enjoyable than when the clay roads forced us to walk our bikes for hours at a time, stopping every now and then to free the wheels.

And that road gave us plenty of opportunities to get to know the local shepherds. As well as one of the oldest professions, shepherding must also be one of the world’s most prolific, practised across a huge number of nations and cultures by men and women, old and young. Even in some of the most remote regions and inhospitable conditions, we would meet shepherds on the road and do our best to trade a few pleasantries; each party equally surprised to have some company for a while.

RELATED: Uzbekistan’s modern-day pilgrims

We crossed the Caspian Sea on a three-day freight ship journey from Azerbaijan, and arrived at the edge of the Mangyshlak Peninsula in Kazakhstan. What lay ahead were hundreds of miles of absolutely nothing, in every direction.

We rode. And as the Kazakh steppe merged seamlessly into the Uzbek desert, we were faced with the familiar challenge of long distances between towns and resupply points. Every few days, we would hit upon a welcoming oasis of life and take time to stop and recalibrate.

After two weeks of traveling from the Tajik capital of Dushanbe, east along the Afghan border and over the first passes of the Pamir plateau, we descended into the former Soviet military post of Murghab. The only significant settlement for hundreds of square miles, it was our sole opportunity to fix broken bikes, resupply food stocks, and begin the lengthy process of applying for our Pakistan visas before heading back into the unconnected world.

RELATED: How mountain biking is saving tiny towns

As we left Tajikistan behind, the alpine meadows and rolling green pastures of Kyrgyzstan were a welcome sight. The two lads pictured above were the first people we met after crossing the border—they’d run to intersect our path after spotting us from their yurt. After seven weeks in the country, waiting for our passports to return from an agency in the UK, we’d meet many more like them; nomadic families who spend their winters in the valley villages, and their summers tending horses up in the high pastures.

We entered China and were surprised to find that the much of the local population shared their heritage with lands beyond their borders—as seen above by a Kyrgyz yurt camp along the Khunjerab pass that forms the Pakistani border. This junction of Chinese, Kyrgyz, Tajik, Afghan and Pakistani borders is extremely culturally porous, and goes to show how meaningless a line drawn on a map can sometimes be.

To get out of the high mountains of Pakistan, we first had to cross Attabad Lake. Formed after a landslide submerged an entire village and the famous Karakoram Highway road, the lake is now a barrier between the far north of Pakistan and the rest of the country. Cars, buses, trucks, livestock, food, people—everything, including us—must be loaded onto precariously tiny ferries and shipped across. While irresistibly beautiful for an outsider, it has been a life-changing event for thousands of locals, who wait eagerly for the new road, perched on the cliff side above, to be completed.

Terrifying video shows cyclist’s view of head-on collision https://briefnews.eu/terrifying-video-shows-cyclists-view-of-head-on-collision/ https://briefnews.eu/terrifying-video-shows-cyclists-view-of-head-on-collision/#respond Fri, 30 Mar 2018 21:38:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/terrifying-video-shows-cyclists-view-of-head-on-collision/

We’ve all seen examples of drivers who don’t square their turns, instead making left turns that are too tight and cut well into the oncoming driving lanes, making you glad there’s nobody approaching to make their own left turns.

Here’s a video showing one of the worst-case scenarios for why this is such a dangerous driving habit. It’s footage that shows a stationary bicyclist being mowed down head-on from an onrushing white Buick Rendezvous. It’s stomach-churning and, as a fair warning, features coarse language. Thankfully, the bicyclist who uploaded the video said he was “ok, just some scrapes, nothing more.”

The footage shows him approaching a red light at an intersection and gliding to a stop in the left turn lane. Shortly afterward, the Buick enters the frame, making a left turn toward the cyclist. Only it quickly becomes apparent that the driver is headed straight for him, in the opposite turn lane on the wrong side of the double-yellow line. He sounds an air horn, to no avail. The woman at the wheel appears to speed up into the turn and strikes him head-on, upending him and the video camera.

Immediately, the cyclist, whose name is Doug Reynolds, starts wailing. The woman gets out and apologizes, saying she didn’t see him, and calls 9-1-1.

Interestingly, commenters on the YouTube clip point out what appears to be a pink cell-phone in her right hand, suggesting that rather than not seeing him, she may well have been distracted by her phone. It’s certainly hard to make the argument that you didn’t see someone who was right in front of your car’s grille, especially when you’re on the wrong side of the road.

Reynolds writes that he doesn’t believe the woman’s claims, either, and says he plans to file a police report and pursue her insurance provider for a replacement wheel or new bike. “Good thing I had my helmet on, otherwise I could of [sic] suffered a concussion, or have been knocked out cold,” he writes. Interestingly, his YouTube channel is full of footage of harrowing near misses while on a bike — but also at least one example of a cyclist not following safe road rules.

Let this be a lesson for all of you impatient, distracted drivers out there: Leave your cell phones alone, and square your turns!

Elon Musk says The Boring Company’s Loop will prioritize pedestrians, cyclists https://briefnews.eu/elon-musk-says-the-boring-companys-loop-will-prioritize-pedestrians-cyclists/ https://briefnews.eu/elon-musk-says-the-boring-companys-loop-will-prioritize-pedestrians-cyclists/#respond Sat, 10 Mar 2018 17:47:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/elon-musk-says-the-boring-companys-loop-will-prioritize-pedestrians-cyclists/

Enlarge (credit: The Boring Company)

Elon Musk started The Boring Company in late 2016 because he was frustrated by sitting in his car in Los Angeles traffic. A system of tunnels, he reasoned, would alleviate certain traffic choke points. The idea turned into reality throughout 2017, as Musk tore up the parking lot outside of his SpaceX headquarters, testing boring machinery to find weak spots that engineers might improve upon to make tunnel-digging faster and cheaper.

The idea also changed a bit: instead of simply looking to build the cheapest tunnels, The Boring Company wanted to build a “Loop” inside its tunnels. The Loop would be a modified version of Musk’s Hyperloop idea, but it would not pull a vacuum and cars would be lowered into the tunnel system where they would be put on electric skates and zipped off to their destination automatically.

According to some tweets from Elon Musk last night, though, the idea has once again morphed. “Adjusting The Boring Company plan: all tunnels & Hyperloop will prioritize pedestrians & cyclists over cars,” the executive tweeted, adding: “Will still transport cars, but only after all personalized mass transit needs are met. It’s a matter of courtesy & fairness. If someone can’t afford a car, they should go first.”

Gym workout plan: Team GB cyclist’s seven tips for keeping off Christmas calories https://briefnews.eu/gym-workout-plan-team-gb-cyclists-seven-tips-for-keeping-off-christmas-calories-2/ https://briefnews.eu/gym-workout-plan-team-gb-cyclists-seven-tips-for-keeping-off-christmas-calories-2/#respond Sun, 17 Dec 2017 05:42:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/gym-workout-plan-team-gb-cyclists-seven-tips-for-keeping-off-christmas-calories-2/

With plenty of food and partying opportunities over the festive season, it’s normal to gain a few extra pounds, said Readle.

It’s also natural to find it difficult sticking to gym and workout schedules, so it’s no surprise that fitness centres are always busy in the new year.

But, eating certain foods before sitting down to a big Christmas dinner, and planning workout routines for antisocial hours, could help with shedding calories over the Christmas break, said Readle.

Here are his top seven tips for keeping fit over the festive season.

Enjoy some well-timed, seasonal snacks

“The best thing you can do to combat overindulging is to eat a light, healthy snack before heading to meals out or family dinners,” said Readle, who is now a sport and fitness psychologist.

“By doing so, you’ll reduce your appetite and your chances of devouring an entire roast dinner [with all the trimmings] single-handedly.”

Don’t skip meals

Skipping meals could actually contribute to weight gain. It’s best to stick to regular meal times, and resist the urge to skip meals to compensate for eating more, said Readle.

“Your body can react to long periods without sufficient nourishment by slowing down your metabolism.

“This, in turn, promotes weight gain, as your body tries to store food you’ve eaten previously in order to make up for the food you’re depriving it of.”

Stay hydrated – Sorry, not with mulled wine

“It’s estimated that many of us are dehydrated far more than we actually realise; sometimes, what our bodies need is hydration and not food.”

Drinking water 30 minutes before a meal could improve digestion, and help the body to absorb more nutrients.

Fill your stocking with fruit and vegetables

“Okay, not literally, but you can’t go far wrong if you’re making sure that your Christmas meals incorporate as much fruit and vegetables as you can fit in,” said Readle.

Fruit and vegetables could help with digestion, and to keep energy levels high.

Leave unhealthy leftovers behind

“To avoid adding a few inches to your waistline over the holiday season, keep your snacks light, low-calorie and as healthy as you can.”

Protein-filled snack bars were the perfect light snack for both before and after exercise, the cyclist said. He recommended Inkospor’s protein snack bars.

Prioritise your workouts

Planning workouts for antisocial hours meant it’s less likely that it’ll interfere with festive celebrations.

“Plan your workouts around less social hours, so that they don’t interfere with your Christmas plans, meaning you’re less likely to have an excuse to skip them.”

Get out of the house

“Even though it’s chilly outside, Christmas doesn’t have to mean being cooped up.

“Getting everyone involved with some outdoor activities can be a fun and healthier alternative to a food and booze-filled day.

“Taking walks in the countryside or snowball fights are just a couple of ways in which you can get some fresh air and burn a few calories this Christmas.”

GYM workout schedules over the Christmas period should be arranged at certain times of the day, so you’re less likely to skip them, according to former Team GB cyclist, Dave Readle.
