In 1984, Canada's Steve Bauer won a bronze medal at the road world championship in Spain, just a few weeks after he captured the country's first Olympic medal in road cycling at Los Angeles.

"My ears were ringing because the people were so loud and I could hear their cow bells," said Woods, an Ottawa native. "Even before the race, I told myself I'd try to get inspiration and energy from what the fans bring to the race. There were so many fans today."

The 31-year-old led Sunday's race with less than 10 kilometres remaining before bowing to Spain's Alejandro Valverde, who sprinted to his first world title after a grueling race of six hours 46 minutes through the Austrian Alps.

Valverde led a group of four in the final kilometre, including Woods, and just remained ahead in the sprint, with Romain Bardet of France taking the silver.

Sunday's victory came 15 years after Valverde won silver in Hamilton, a feat he repeated in 2005 in Madrid.

"This is the greatest day of my career. It means everything to me to take this victory," the 38-year-old Valverde said through an interpreter after becoming the first Spanish world champion since Oscar Freire won the title in 2004.

Sunday's title came a year after he suffered a fractured kneecap in a fall in the Tour de France, forcing him to end his 2017 season prematurely.

Valverde, who served a doping suspension earlier in his career, positioned himself for the win when he went ahead of the pack together with Bardet and Woods for the final five kilometres.

He is planning to retire following the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

2nd at Liè​ge-Bastogne-Liè​ge

Also representing Canada in Sunday's race were Rob Britton (Rally Cycling), reigning national road race champion Antoine Duchesne (Groupama-FDJ) and Hugo Houle (Astana).

Woods, who rides for the EF Education First-Drapac, or Cannondale-Drapac, was second in the prestigious Liè​ge-Bastogne-Liè​ge one-day race in April, the first Canadian to reach the podium at the event.

In May, he was also runner-up on Stage 4 of the Giro d'Italia and ended up 19th after being slowed by illness.

Woods, who makes his home in Spain these days, is a former elite distance runner at the University of Michigan.

He switched to cycling after a recurrent stress fracture in his foot and turned heads early in the 2016 season with a fifth-place finish in his first road race as a World Tour pro at the Tour Down Under in Australia.

Geraint and Sara tied the knot at St Tewdrics House in October 2015 after buying the property in Chepstow, Monmouthshire, for £2.5million.

The 32-year-old and Sara, 27, loved their own wedding day so much they were convinced others would too.

They now offer the six-bedroom Italianate villa to couples who want to use it for their own “bespoke” big day.

Geraint said: “When we were looking for a venue for our wedding we didn’t want it in a hotel, we wanted somewhere which would be just for our guests.

“That’s when we thought of buying a place, having our wedding there and turning it into a business afterwards.

“We came across this place and instantly thought ‘wow’ – we just fell in love with it.”

The couple spend much of the year in Monaco where Thomas trains, but TV presenter Sara also manages the Welsh wedding venue.

Her father Eifion Thomas, said: “Geraint played a huge part when we started St Tewdrics because the financial implications with starting a business like this are immense.

“It’s pretty good he’s doing quite well on his bike because it pays the bills – or it certainly did at the start.”

Guests at the Thomas’s own wedding included Team Sky teammate Chris Froome and Wales and British Lions rugby player George North.

A statement on the St Tewdrics website says: “With views over the Severn estuary, this beautiful villa is available as an exclusive use wedding venue in which you can create your perfect wedding day and create lifelong memories.”

Rebecca (nee Henderson) finished fourth and Dan fifth at the Oceania Championships in Dunedin in February before fine tuning their preparation for the Gold Coast Games where the mountain bike will be held at Nerang.

“We spend all day, every day together,” Rebecca said.

“We train together and that can be up to five hours on the bike each day but it works well for us.”

Dan, 32, has won a silver and bronze medal at cross country world cups and is also a talented road cyclist who rode the 2015 Tour Down Under.

The course at the Nerang National Park is 4.5km long and requires a combination of technique, speed and skill to get up the climbs and down the tricky descents.

Riders will compete an unspecified number of laps and whoever covers the greatest distance in the required time will win.

Mountain bike made its Commonwealth Games debut in Manchester in 2002 and was on the program in Melbourne, 2006 and Glasgow, 2014, and Australia has never won a gold medal in men’s or women’s racing.

“It’s a pretty hard course, getting around it at a leisurely speed isn’t too bad but as soon as you start putting some fast laps together you realise it’s quite physically demanding. There’s a lot of pedalling, there’s not much room for recovery,” Dan said.

“It’s a track that’s fairly high speed everywhere so you have to keep your concentration about you all the time. There aren’t many places where you can relax, once you start doing it at race speed it’s a fairly technical track.”

Rebecca said she had high expectations going into race day.

“We never go into a race aiming for second or third, you go there because you want to win, but it’s also about controlling the things you can control.”

Meyer was only targeting the points race on the track, in which he has been a five-time world champion, but a week ago decided to ride the time trial as well on coach Tim Decker’s recommendation.

After surprisingly missing the medals in the points race when he was heavily marked on Sunday night, Meyer re-focused and stormed to gold on the road at Currumbin on Tuesday.

Set a time of 48mins 43secs for victory, Meyer crushed the field that had started before him to beat England’s Harry Tanfield and New Zealander Hamish Bond by 30 seconds.

The 30-year-old Western Australian covered the 38.5km course which started and finished in Currumbin in 48:13 while teammate Callum Scotson overcame a rear wheel change early to finish fourth in 49:35.

“It was only two weeks ago that we decided, it was Tim Decker who knew I had good aerobic form and I was concentrating on the points race which is a 45-minute effort and today is roughly the same,” Meyer said.

“And he said ‘Cam I reckon you could have a crack in the time trial’, and I said ‘why not? Let’s have a go’. We scrambled a bike together, did my measurements and I had nothing to lose and somehow it paid off.”

It was Meyer’s fourth Commonwealth Games gold medal after he won three on the track in Delhi in 2010 and vindicates his decision to return to cycling’s WorldTour this year.

He has been racing bikes his entire life and is a nine-time world champion on the track. He won The Tour Down Under on the road in 2011 and Herald Sun Tour in 2015 before walking away from professional cycling in 2016 citing a lack of motivation.

He returned later that year on the track which remains his focus heading towards the Tokyo Olympics, but Meyer’s experience, work ethic and engine made him a sought after recruit for WorldTour teams and he signed with Australian squad Mitchelton-Scott.

“I concentrated on my professional road scene then took a break and the last year-and-a-half I’ve been concentrating on getting back into the track and Tokyo Olympics is a main focus,” he said.

“It’s been a while since I’ve done a time trial and I broke my collarbone in the last one I did, so luckily I stayed upright this time and and I couldn’t be more thrilled than I am today.

“I’ve got to thank all the stuff who got behind me and prepared me for today, they did everything right and my coach Tim Decker who said ‘give it a crack’.”

Scotson’s early momentum was halted when he was forced to stop and change his rear disc wheel due to a puncture but he remained philosophical after the race.

“It wasn’t really to plan, it was a little bit my own fault because I didn’t quite nail the line on the corner and went out a bit towards the barrier where there are stones to hit,” Scotson said.

“I heard the puncture and got a quick wheel in, you know you’ve lost time but I had to treat it like it hadn’t happened and kind of forget until the finish, and it is what it is.”

Canada won silver in the men’s team pursuit at the track cycling World Cup on Sunday, in Milton, Ont.  

Jay Lamoureuz, Derek Gee, Adam Jamieson and local boy Michael Foley powered Canada to second place (3:59.982) behind New Zealand (3:59.000).

Earlier in the day, the quartet set a Canadian record of 3:58.359 en route to the podium.

The United States (4.05.025) defeated Switzerland for bronze.

In the men’s sprint Hugo Barrette nearly captured another medal for Canada but was unable to overcome Jack Carlin of Great Britain who took bronze.

In the gold medal race, Jeffrey Hoogland of the Netherlands swept Ethan Mitchell of New Zealand.

It has been a successful event for Canada, which captured four medals during the three day event. On Saturday, the quartet of Ariane Bonhomme, Kinley Gibson, Annie Foreman-Mackey, and Allison Beveridge took gold in the women’s team pursuit event.

Shortly after, Beveridge added an individual medal after placing second in the women’s omnium.

Jasmin Duehring got the haul started with a silver in the points race on Friday.
