Directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi (Gurren Lagann) and Hiromi Wakabayashi (Star Wars: Visions), Cyberpunk: Edgerunners follows a teenage boy pulled into a dark world of high-tech mercenaries known as “Edgerunners.” As he’s drawn ever deeper into the world of body modification and corporate espionage, David (voiced by Zach Aguilar in the English version of the series) soon finds himself struggling to figure out what’s truly important and where to draw the line when it comes to his cybernetic implants.

While much of the Edgerunners world is a shiny metropolis sitting among dark streets and dirty alleys, the series doesn’t shy away from covering all of it with a gory mess of blood and viscera. The ultraviolence in Edgerunners gets started early, but the series never devolves into a nonstop symphony of brutality. Between bouts of frantic action (and the occasional, explicit sex scene), Edgerunners also delivers a fair share of quiet, contemplative moments as David ponders the increasingly bleak turns his life takes.
The10 episodes of Edgerunners run anywhere from 20 to 30 minutes each, and the show does a nice job of fitting a satisfying amount of action, storytelling, and world-building into each chapter without feeling overstuffed. Cyberpunk anime often has a difficult time balancing those elements, with many series collapsing under convoluted, fictional networks of corporate and criminal drama. Fortunately, Edgerunners mostly avoids getting mired in the weeds of its own complicated lore by keeping the focus on its characters.

Anyone familiar with the cyberpunk worlds that fill William Gibson stories and the Shadowrun franchise will recognize the major players in Edgerunners, as they tend to fall into the usual archetypes of the genre. Hulking muscle-heads with exaggerated cybernetic musculature operate alongside shadowy hackers and unhinged, walking armories wielding comically large guns, taking on missions for sinister, suited executives angling for an advantage over their corporate competition. It’s a cadre of characters you know, but they’re still fun to watch as they bounce off each other in the grim environment they operate within.
Maybe most importantly (for the game studio that financed its production, at least) is that Edgerunners makes the dystopian world of Cyberpunk 2077 both accessible and appealing to those who haven’t played the game. Like fellow Netflix adaptation Arcane and the League of Legends game that inspired it, you don’t need to be familiar with Cyberpunk 2077 to enjoy Edgerunners, but the show is so intriguing you’ll probably want to give the game a look after the season ends.

That’s not the only quality Edgerunners shares with Arcane, either. The cyberpunk series also features a memorable opening theme — This Fffire by Franz Ferdinand — that manages to capture (or perhaps set) the tone of the series while also being amazingly earwormy in all the right ways.
Although it isn’t as philosophical or self-aware as more prominent cyberpunk anime (for example, Ghost in the Shell) or as beautifully polished as the aforementioned Arcane, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners still measures up well in the genre and as an extension of the game that inspired it. The series might not break any new ground, but that’s not the intent. What it does deliver is a satisfying standalone story that leaves you hopeful for future one-off tales set in its blood-drenched world of neon and chrome.

The entire season of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is available on Netflix.

The upcoming video game Cyberpunk 2077 took this summer’s E3 by storm with a behind-closed-doors reveal that set tongues wagging. Now, two months later, the game’s developers at CD Projekt RED have deemed this hour-long gameplay slice worthy of public consumption.
We’ve reviewed the footage, which the developer posted on Monday on its own Twitch feed and then encouraged other users to re-stream, and we can confirm both its similarities and differences to what we saw back in June. In short: differences in combat, movement, and tempo appear to indicate this is a real-time-rendered demo—albeit one that adheres to a strict path.

CD Projekt Red are right now running a mystery Twitch live stream which fans are hoping will lead up to a Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay reveal.
The CD Projekt Red live stream – which you just need to click here to watch online – simply shows line after line of computer code.
The code being displayed is not static, with more lines being added bit by bit as the Twitch stream goes on.
At the time of writing over 45,000 people are watching the CD Projekt Red Twitch stream wondering what it’s all leading up to.
But fans are already hoping that a Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay reveal could be inbound.
Cyberpunk 2077 was arguably the game of E3 2018 with the first footage of The Witcher 3 developer’s next title wowing fans at the Xbox event.
That initial trailer showed cinematic footage of Cyberpunk 2077 with a gameplay reveal shown to journalists behind closed doors.
And fans are already speculating that the mysterious CD Projekt Red live stream that has gone live today could be about to showcase that footage.
One fan tweeted: “Possibly the only game that can stream a bunch of code and have close to 50,000 people watching.
“THAT is #hype for @CyberpunkGame by @CDPROJEKTRED.
“Maybe a gameplay trailer coming? #CyberPunk2077”.
While another on Twitter wrote: “If we get gameplay I’ll flip.
“My bank has been offering me a preapproved loan I cannot pay, but I’ll take it and buy a new PC just for Cyberpunk 2077.”
One added: “7PM CEST seems to be the time for Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay #lastRT”.
And one said: “I think I may s*** myself from raw excitement if #Cyberpunk2077 gameplay is shown today”.
Ahead of Gamescom last week the official Cyberpunk 2077 Twitter account teased an update for the gaming convention in Cologne.
They tweeted: “New system update available: gamescom version 2.18

Cyberpunk 2077 looks fantastic. It’s a joy to be able write those words, and it’s a relief that they ring so true. CD Projekt Red, the studio behind the Witcher series, has been remarkably silent since revealing Cyberpunk in 2012 — developers released one teaser trailer in 2013 and then went underground, leaving sci-fi and RPG fans in the dark for five long years.
At E3 2018, they finally turned on the light. And, my oh my, what a sight it is.
The light happens to be neon, shining bright blue, green, pink, red, purple and yellow across the sprawling, metallic future of Night City. Cyberpunk offers a fresh kind of sci-fi dystopia, ditching the heavy, dreary backgrounds of Blade Runner or Deus Ex for a brighter, yet still corrupt and dangerous, metropolis. This art direction alone infuses the game with life — it feels more connected to reality, rather than relying on an extreme vision of humanity’s technology-fueled doom.
“It’s not a dead world. It’s a very living place.”
Night City is still bustling with activity and subtle details that bolster the sense of realism. On top of things like cranial chip implants, robotic body modifications, a plethora of drones and flying vehicles, Cyberpunk nods at the past. For instance, there’s a restaurant styled like a classic American diner, and as the protagonist walks through, a waitress tells some customers about the strawberry shakes on offer.
CD Projekt Red developers are building Night City to feel like a real California town.
“This is a world where the worst crimes happen in broad daylight and everybody knows that they happen, and everybody just kind of goes along with it,” quest designer (yes, “quest designer” is a job title at CD Projekt Red) Patrick Mills says. “Everybody just lives their lives. But it also lets us have this vibrancy and this living quality to the streets. It’s not a dead world. It’s a very living place.”
The word “mature” gets brandied around a lot in the video game industry, often used as a euphemism for hyper violent or sexual titles, but Cyberpunk treats that description with a deft hand. It’s plenty violent and features scenes with (male and female) sex workers, nudity, murder, drugs and alcohol — the protagonist is a big fan of scotch, apparently — but in the hour-long gameplay demo shown off at E3 this week, none of it feels gratuitous. It feels right for the world. It feels real.

The main character, V, is completely customizable in Cyberpunk, meaning players get to tweak things like gender and appearance to their own liking. In the demo, developers played as a woman. Whatever gender V ends up being, the character has plenty of attitude, playing the role of the skilled, sarcastic and tough mercenary perfectly.
“We spent a lot of time trying to make sure that this feels like California, and that it has the ethos of California and it has the diversity of California,” Mills says. “Even internally, the way that we work, just to make sure that we’re writing a story that works with a male and a female character, some teams write and they write ‘he’ and they use the ‘he’ pronoun. Some other teams use the feminine pronoun, just to make sure that we’re not screwing anything up and we’re not writing, ‘Oh, this only works for a man and this only works for a woman.'”
“We spent a lot of time trying to make sure that this feels like California.”
The game relies on individual choices, offering players a wide range of reactions to certain situations and opening up gameplay paths from there. Some players will attempt to fight their way through each scene, starting battles with every person they encounter, while others will try a more diplomatic approach. Both responses are accurate, but they change the game in unique ways.
“We have a rule, where if it’s logical that you should be able to do something in a different order or have a different path, then you should be able to do that and the game should respond to those things,” Mills says. “Which means our quests can get really, really big and really, really complicated, and it is a ton of work. But it’s worth it.”

V gets a variety of gadgets and upgrades, including eyes that can zoom in and scan objects, a gun that shoots bullets around corners and praying mantis-style arm blades that allow her to climb walls and cut enemies down.
One of the biggest revelations about Cyberpunk this week was the fact that it’s in a first-person perspective, rather than third-person like the Witcher games and most other RPGs. This is a deliberate design choice by developers. They want players to feel like V’s story is their own.
“If you go and you play a third-person game and you try to look up, it never really works and it never really gives you that feel,” Mills says. “To us, if you’ve got that [first-person perspective] and you can look up and you can see those skyscrapers dwarfing you and you’re in this canyon of glass and steel and concrete, it feels really cool.”
There’s no word on when Cyberpunk will actually come out, and developers are hesitant to provide a release window. It’ll be done when it’s done, Mills says — even if that means another five years. At least now there’s a little more light on the project.

It’s a spot of madness, this machine, as if Frank Rinderknecht had engineered a hookup between a phone booth and a golf cart at a ’90s rave somewhere on the outskirts of propriety. It makes a bit of sense, then, that former BMW design chief Chris Bangle is involved. The vehicle is called the REDS, a backronym coined by Bangle and defined by Redspace CEO Wang Jinan as standing for Revolutionary Electric Dream Space. Let 100 electric daisies bloom, dudes.
–
–
Redspace itself is a part of the Wang-helmed China Hi-Tech Group Corporation, one of the many concerns diving into the Middle Kingdom’s electrified future, but the company’s take on what a small-footprint electric-drive vehicle could be is rather more radical than simply adding a battery pack to a sedan or a hatch and calling it good. Redspace has yet to provide performance figures for the ungainly bot box, but specs seem to be beside the point, anyway. The REDS is all about what goes on when the car is stopped.
–
–
The steering wheel flips up beyond vertical, getting it out of the way of the occupants. The front seats swivel to face the rear passengers, turning the diminutive auto into a cozy conference center. Those same seats also fold up into footstools. A 17-inch screen, which largely retracts into the dash while on the go—it sticks up just enough to house the offset gauges—pops up to allow the viewing of films, or, we presume, psychedelic displays to enhance whatever you might be consuming while plopped down on what Bangle refers to as the car’s rear “love seat.”
–
–
–
–
–
At a mere 117 inches in overall length, the REDS is nearly three feet shorter than a Mini Cooper Hardtop. Put another way, its wheelbase is said to be 19.7 inches shorter than that of a Fiat 500. It is said to be made of aluminum, and it features a weird abstract map on the ceiling. What’s on display at the Los Angeles auto show is very clearly a prototype, its odd gaps lending it more of a movie-prop feel than the vibe of an actual car. Oh, and that half-conical, forward-canted windshield? Aside from making room for the forward-tipped steering wheel, it’s said to reduce the interior greenhouse effect. It’s hard to look at the REDS and see anything but a human-swallowing pill meant to brighten up some strange and claustrophobic dystopia. Which, given the day and age, might just be what some of us need.
