Goldman Sachs has cut its year-end target for the S&P 500, predicting the benchmark US stock index will fall 4.2% as the Federal Reserve sticks to its aggressive tightening.
The Wall Street bank dropped the benchmark's three-month target from 4,300 to 3,600, and warned that the US central bank's fast pace of interest rate hikes will likely lead to further stock selloffs before the end of 2022.
"The expected path of interest rates is now higher than we previously assumed, which tilts the distribution of equity market outcomes below our prior forecast," the bank's strategists said in a note to clients Thursday.
"The S&P 500 index actually reached our previous year-end target of 4,300 in mid-August, but the rate complex has subsequently shifted dramatically," added the team, led by chief US equity strategist David Kostin.
US stocks slipped after the Fed on Wednesday hiked interest rates by an outsized 75 basis points for the third time in a row. The S&P 500 closed 0.84% lower at 3,757.99 on Thursday, after hitting a two-month low of 3,749.35 during that session.
Investors have fretted about the interest rate hikes because of their potential impact on economic growth.
The Goldman Sachs team warned the S&P 500 could fall as low as 3,400 if earnings of its listed companies decline and the Fed's attempts to curb red-hot inflation lead to a "hard landing", where the US suffers a recession.
"The outlook is unusually murky. The forward paths of inflation, economic growth, interest rates, earnings, and valuations are all in flux more than usual, with a wider distribution of potential outcomes," they said.
But in the near term, Goldman Sachs expects investors will turn their focus to corporate earnings. In the third-quarter earnings season, record-high profit margins will be closely examined, its team said.
Stock investors have come round to the view that a hard landing for the US economy is inevitable, Goldman Sachs said, based on discussions with clients.
"Most portfolio managers believe that in order to corral inflation, the Fed will have to hike rates sufficiently high that it will result in a US recession at some point during 2023," Kostin's team said.
The bank's strategists said its higher interest rate scenario implies the S&P 500 will still be at 3,600 in six months, but should rise 6% to 4,000 in 12 months.
Goldman Sachs expects another 75 basis point hike at the Fed's November meeting, followed by a 50 basis point rise in December. A hike of 25 basis points in February means policymakers are aiming to raise interest rates to between 4.5% and 4.75%.

Russia has halted natural-gas flows to Europe via a key pipeline amid the war in Ukraine, but the move may end up biting itself, according to Bloomberg, citing an internal document prepared for the Russian government.
While Russia is an energy giant, most of its exports go to European customers. In 2021, Europe snapped up about half of Russia's oil products and three-quarters of its natural gas, according to the US Energy Information Administration.
Thus, a fall in exports to Europe means Russian natural-gas production would have to fall to better meet lower shipment needs. This would, in turn, hit Moscow's plans to boost domestic gas supplies, per Bloomberg, citing the report.
Additionally, a complete halt in natural-gas supplies to Europe could cost the Kremlin as much as 400 billion rubles, or $ 6.6 billion, a year in tax revenues, according to Russia's internal report, per the media outlet. While Russia is trying to diversify its customer base, new markets will not be able to make up lost sales from European customers in the medium term.
As Europe is also set to ban most Russian oil imports from the end of 2022, the demand slump could lead to a deep cut in Russian production, causing a shortage of the fuel domestically, Bloomberg reported, citing the internal report.
Overall, the internal Russian report paints a gloomy picture of the country's economy amid sweeping sanctions over its invasion of Ukraine — which contrasts sharply with more upbeat data from the Kremlin in recent months.
The situation could worsen if the world enters a recession. That's because Russia would've already lost its stable European market, causing it to become a "swing supplier" of energy products — with the country having to adjust and adapt its output to changing market demands, according to the report.
This would mean that a plunge in demand for Russian oil products could have an adverse economic impact, such as pushing up inflation in the country and putting downward pressure on the ruble, the report warned, per Bloomberg.

Google is slowly opening up the Play Store’s billing policies. The “user choice billing” pilot program that was announced in March is now accepting sign-ups. Google describes the program in a support article, saying, “This pilot is designed to test offering an alternative billing option next to Google Play’s billing system and to help us explore offering this choice to users. We are looking to gain feedback in different countries and ensure we can maintain a positive user experience.”
Developers interested in billing through an alternative provider can fill out Google’s sign-up form, and it sounds like Google will manually review each application. Currently the supported regions are the European Economic Area (that’s Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Republic of Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and Sweden), Australia, India, Indonesia, and Japan.
Google won’t let developers use the pilot program for games—the biggest money makers—but only for apps.

The politician continued: “I think it’s just worth mentioning as well that in the private sector, many people are actually losing their jobs and have been on very much reduced incomes over the past year.
“No one else, no other public sector employee is receiving a pay rise and so it’s against that backdrop that the government has decided that all we can afford is the one percent but nurses and healthcare workers will be the only employees the only workers receiving a pay rise this year.
“Many public sector workers will receive northing, many people in the private sector have either lost their jobs or are on reduced incomes.
“And if I can just make one more point, it’s also important to note that over the past three years, newly qualified nurses have received a 12 percent increase which quite rightly so have taken their salaries to an average of £34,000.

Someone else wrote: “Absolutely. What is the point of Jenrick coming on #bbcbreakfast ? Total waste of time. Never answers the actual question. Obnoxious.”
However, others disagreed: “@BBCBreakfast @RobertJenrick very clear and succinct replies from the Mp. Usual aggression from Charlie most unhelpful and rude.”
“For goodness sake Charlie, stop the aggressive *gotcha* closed questions…Covid Marshalls …& LISTEN to the rational answer!” Another fumed.
While one added: “@BBCBreakfast cringeworthy Charlie this morning asking the same repetitive questions that someone cant and won’t answer – pointless.”

Naga Munchetty welcomed James Cleverly onto the show this morning as the presenter grilled the Foreign Office Minister on the Government’s Brexit negotiations. However, the BBC Breakfast host cut off Cleverly after the Tory MP slammed Munchetty for “repeating wrong information” during the heated debate.
How is Boris Johnson handling the coronavirus crisis? Vote in our poll
Munchetty said: “In the Conservative Party manifesto, Boris Johnson had said, ‘With a new parliament and a sensible majority Government,’ you have a significant majority Government.
“‘We can get that Brexit deal through in days, it is oven-ready and all of the Conservative MPs have elected to vote for it immediately.’
“He spoke of a deal that was ‘oven-ready, ready to go, put it in at gas mark four and Bob’s your uncle,’ these are his words.
She added: “Why are we reporting, why are we talking about fractious relations between negotiators negotiating this deal now with EU leaders and where’s the over-ready deal?”

“No, you’re conflating two completely different things,” Cleverly hit back.
“The deal you were referencing and quoting the Prime Minister on was the Withdrawal Agreement Act.
“The deal that every single Conservative candidate at the General Election said they would support.
“We got the majority, they did support it, it went through, we left the European Union.”
“The Internal Market Bill breaks international law,” Munchetty quipped. “That’s the discussion carrying on at the moment.”
Shaking his head, the Tory MP said: “No it doesn’t.”
“The legislation called the Internal Market Bill doesn’t correspond with international law,” Munchetty reiterated.
“No, you’re repeating something that’s wrong,” Cleverly swiped. “What the Internal Market Bill does is it protects the integrity of the United Kingdom.
“It gives us the ability if we are unable to get that…”
Cutting the Tory MP off, Munchetty asked: “Just to clarify the EU’s legal threat is incorrect is it?”
Cleverly replied: “No, what the point is the Internal Markets Bill gives us the ability to protect the integrity of the United Kingdom.
“That may mean we have to diverge from some of the elements in the Withdrawal Agreement.”
BBC Breakfast airs daily on BBC One at 6am.
“But this is a negotiating tactic,” Brown continued. “He thinks, as he did the last time, that someone will come in and save the day for him.
“He will make a last minute deal, he wants to go straight to the European council people.
“And he thinks Angela Merkel will accept that the rule of law might be broken and that’s just not going to happen.”
However later in the conversation, Brown’s screen froze when answering one of Stayt’s questions.

And then there were… fewer. Tuesday’s episode of America’s Got Talent reunited the judges (in person!) to crush a few more dreams and reveal which acts will be proceeding to the Season 15 live episodes.
As is the case with all difficult AGT decisions, Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, Howie Mandel and Sofia Vergara were at each other’s throats from the jump, with several judges bringing up valid arguments like “You don’t know what it’s like to swallow a sword” and “Nein! Nein! Nein!” It was utter chaos.
After much deliberation, however, the quartet of fate began letting acts through to the next round. Some of those lucky individuals included fierce singer Celina Graves, high-energy percussionist Malik Dope Drummer, dance group Dance Town Family, country singer Kameron Ross, teen singer Kelvin Dukes, ukulelist Feng E, football player-turned-singer Thomas Day, flexible dancer Noah Epps, song-and-dance Double Dragon, acrobat Alan Silva, sword swallower Brett Loudermilk, stand-up comedians Alex Hooper and Usama Siddiquee, novelty musician BONAVEGA, farm team Pork Chop Revue, impressionist Vincent Marcus, and wrongly incarcerated singer Archie Williams.
Unfortunately, this meant the judges had to say goodbye to a number of disappointed hopefuls. Some of the acts who got bad news tonight included dog act Jennifer and Daiquiri, musical duo Broken Roots, and singer Ashley Marina.
But some calls were just too close to make without a second look, so the judges asked 10 acts to return to the AGT “stage” for a follow-up performance: Kid dancers Simon and Maria served up some sizzling salsa, Craig Reed just plain served with a full-scale hula hoop number choreographed to Lady Gaga’s “Stupid Love,” Max Major blew Simon’s mind by pulling childhood memories out of his brain, Shaquira McGrath delivered a powerful rendition of Avicii’s “Wake Me Up,” and stand-up comedian Ty Barnett failed to impress the judges with a routine about his kids.
Next, harmonica siblings The Brothers Gage tried something different with their take on LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem,” inspirational singer-songwriter Nolan Neal gave an intimate fireside performance of “You’ve Got the Love,” magician Ryan Tricks enlisted AGT: The Champions judge Alesha Dixon for another mind-bending trick, dance duo The Ninja Twins transported us to Candyland with a playful rendition of Justin Bieber’s “Yummy,” and daredevil Jonathan Goodwin nearly took an arrow — actually, make that several arrows — to the chest.
Of those 10 acts, the following five were sent through: Simon and Maria, Jonathan Goodwin, Shaquira McGrath, Max Major and Nolan Neal. That means Craig Reed, The Brothers Gage, Ty Barnett, Ryan Tricks and The Ninja Twins have reached the end of their respective AGT journeys.
The acts that survived the Judge Cuts will proceed to the live shows, joining this season’s crop of Golden Buzzer recipients: spoken-word poet Brandon Leake, singer Cristina Rae, singer Roberta Battaglia, Voices of Our City Choir and dance group W.A.F.F.L.E. Crew.

Yes we’ve got yours!” Phillip stated. “And have you seen my skin! I mean, you know -“
But he was cut off by Ruth: “It’s beautiful Phillip, I’m buying that whatever you’re wearing, I’m having a pint of that!”
Regaining control, Ruth continued: “Now, back to our show!
“We are preparing to have two shy and retiring people join us today, Janet Street Porter is back, no doubt ready for a rant.
“On top of that Piers Morgan is here alongside the long-suffering Susanna Reid – so it could get noisy!

GMB host Susanna Reid kicked off the debate by reading the quote Alastair used on Twitter to spark the row.
Susanna said: “We should say that this was a quote from Measure for Measure: ‘The man, proud man, dressed in a little brief authority most ignorant of what he’s most assured.
“His glassy essence like an angry ape plays such fantastic tricks before high heaven as makes the angels weep who, with our spleens, would all themselves laugh mortal.’”
The TV presenter then read aloud the response from the Twitter user which read: “Just an ITV Newsreader referring to me as an ape with the cover of Shakespeare.”

The GMB host then asked Ed and Afua if the tweet was racist to which Afua replied: “Absolutely.”
Afua also added that Alastair “should’ve known” the tweet would be deemed offensive by a “black Twitter user.”
However, Ed took issue with his fellow panellist’s stance, describing the tweet as “just a quote.”
Susanna also pointed out the quote used by Alastair had been used by the broadcaster before but to a white Twitter user.
Afua remained adamant with her position on the debate, reiterating: “If you’re going to use a quote that has the words ‘angry ape’ in it and aim it at a black Twitter user, that is racist. It is.”
As the debate came to a close, Susanna asked Afua what amends she would expect to be made by Alastair upon acknowledging the quote as a “misjudgement.”
Afua responded: “Well definitely an apology and definitely taking yourself out of a position where you’re able to say these things, I think is a really good start.
“And there also needs to be an acknowledgement, this is sadly about white privilege. There needs to be acknowledgement –”
