Updating your iPhone can be done automatically or manually from Settings, or even from your computer.

  • You can update your iPhone from the Software Update section of the Settings app.
  • It's possible to set up automatic iPhone updates, so it downloads whenever a new iOS is available.
  • If your iPhone won't update to the new iOS, it might be too old or not have enough storage space.

Apple releases updates for the iPhone pretty regularly. In addition to at least one major update to the OS each year, there are generally a few incremental updates throughout the year, often to fix bugs and perform security improvements. 

You can set your iPhone to update itself automatically, or manually update it yourself. Here's what you should know.

How to update your iPhone automatically

The easiest (and most secure) way to manage iPhone updates is to let your device handle it. 

Here's how to make sure your iPhone is ready to update automatically:

1. Open the Settings app and tap General.

2. On the General page, tap Software Update.

3. On the Software Update page, tap Automatic Updates.

4. To let the iPhone do everything automatically, be sure both the Download iOS Updates and Install iOS Updates buttons are turned on by swiping them to the right, turning them green.

When both switches are turned on, your iPhone will download update files to the phone and then install them automatically overnight, when your phone is charging and locked. 

How to update your iPhone manually

If you want to manage updates yourself, or the phone isn't installing updates automatically for some reason, you can do it yourself. 

1. Open the Settings app and tap General.

2. On the General page, tap Software Update. Your phone will check to see if there's an update available.

3. If there is an update available, tap Download and Install. Agree to the terms and conditions, and wait while the update downloads to your phone.

4. Finally, tap Install to complete the update.

Troubleshooting tips if your iPhone won't update

If your iPhone won't update either manually or automatically, try these troubleshooting methods. 

Make sure your iPhone is compatible

The latest iOS software update, iOS 15, is available for the iPhone 6S and later, as well as the iPhone SE (both first and second generation) and the iPod Touch 7th generation.

This means that if you're still using an iPhone 5S or earlier, you're out of luck. You can view a full list of compatible iPhone versions here. 

Check that you have enough available storage

iOS 15 will take up about 3.24 GB of storage space, but you'll need more than that to successfully install the update. In fact, you'll need a total of about 5GB of free space on your phone to download and install the update.

To see how much free space your phone has right now, open the Settings app, tap General, and select iPhone Storage. The amount of storage you have available will be listed at the top of the iPhone Storage page.

Connect to WiFi and charge your battery

Sometimes it's the little things that will block an iOS update. You should have a strong, reliable WiFi connection and your iPhone needs to have at least 50 percent of battery life remaining. 

For the best results, perform the update at home or in the office, where you know you have dependable WiFi. And connect your phone to a dock or charger before starting the update. 

Restart your iPhone

Restarting your iPhone can solve any number of small glitches, including corrupted files or other bugs that can interfere with an iOS update.

Update your iPhone from your computer

On rare occasions, you might run into a glitch and find that your iPhone can't install an update, either automatically or manually. If that happens, you can install it from a PC or Mac.

1. Plug your iPhone into your computer.

2. If you're on a PC, open iTunes. If you're on a Mac, open Finder and click your phone's name in the sidebar.

3. If you see a message on the computer asking if you want to allow the computer to access your iPhone, click Continue. Likewise, tap Trust on your iPhone. 

4. In iTunes, click Library and then click the iPhone icon on the left side of the toolbar. In Finder, click General.

5. Click Check for Update.

BadLands RoadTrip is almost comically ambitious with its “open world action adventure with co-op multiplayer where the player builds their own gun and goes on a quest to rid the world of the robot apocalypse.” As expected, this doesn’t always work – there is a reason why open world titles are usually tackled by larger studios, not single developers. However, the game has one standout feature I’d love to see a lot more of all across the AAA and indie space.

You see, the reward for blasting those robots to smithereens is money, which in turn allows you to customize your guns to your heart’s content. This goes way deeper than just cosmetic options: in addition to adding different components such as barrels and firing mechanisms to your weapon, you also craft the bullets it uses. Here, you can set the amount of shell, propellant, rocket fuel, and explosives, leading to all sorts of weapons that not only look, but handle differently.

This is well done and keeps you invested in your little arsenal… even if the rest of the game is probably hit-and-miss for most players. You might find the humor either refreshing and quirky or obnoxious, and the open world doesn’t have very much to do besides traveling to the next quest hub and shooting lots of robots. There are also technical issues that bring down the frame rate to single digits occasionally.

I did like the small physics puzzles where you had to shoot through some tubes in order to unlock new weapon parts. Very clever, that! Also, there’s a nice sense of escalation, with the enemies getting progressively stronger and your own weapons turning ever more ridiculous.

Sure, BadLands RoadTrip has a few issues, but if the humor works for you, you should probably give it a shot, if only for the pleasure of turning your lousy old pea shooter into a four-barreled semi-automatic revolver that shoots exploding rubber balls.

Harry Potter doesn’t own wizards and magic wands — though The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Orlando certainly popularized selling them in merchandise form.

The magic wand is a particularly clever piece of marketing that also is deeply connected to the world of Harry Potter — there are whole subplots about the importance of a wizard’s bond with his wand and how the “wand chooses the wizard.” Heck, the entire finale of Harry Potter hinges on the ownership of a wand! Merlin’s wand in Disney’s The Sword in the Stone? Not so pivotal.

But Disneyland Paris is piggybacking on the success of the Harry Potter wands, and creating their own brand of magic wands that can be sold at a Merlin’s Shop near you! And by near you, I mean exclusively in Disneyland Paris.

Disneyland Paris is collaborating with Arribas Crystal Arts to introduce magic wands merchandise to be sold in Merlin’s shop at Sleeping Beauty’s Castle, according to the Disney and More blog. Sold in long, thin boxes that look eerily like the boxes that Universal Studios’ Ollivander’s wands are sold in, the Disney wands even have a similar shape with a customized handle. But wait! They’re not made of wood or resin, but glass thanks to Arribas’ specialty in crystal and glass objects.

The price of a personalized wand is 39,00 € and even more if you want to write a message of your choice ( for 4,90€ ). See the below gallery of pictures, courtesy of Arribas Crystal Arts.

The wands’ connection to Disney through The Sword in the Stone is tenuous to say the least — only Merlin wielded a wand, and nothing much stood out about it except perhaps the wood looked a bit gnarly — but I have to admit that Arribas’ wands do look stunning. Created by a glassblower on the spot and filled with magic crystals of your choice, they make for a much more memorable display than the Harry Potter wands. But you know, they’re missing the story context as well as the interactive experience that Universal offers.

For an extra fee, Universal allows customers to experience Harry’s first wand-buying experience, testing out if the wands suit them by performing various spells on objects that react to the wand. It’s pretty darn cool.

It’s quite unusual for Disney to chase after a Universal Studios’ brand, especially with the wide variety of franchises and characters that Disney already has under its belt. It may be a sign of a changing dynamic in the theme park world, with a power balance that has shifted with the rise of more franchises gaining more theme park rides.

The wands are exclusively available at Disneyland Paris for now. Other collector’s edition wands will be available for special events throughout the year.

The wonder of smart homes is being able to connect and automate all your devices, but it’s still important to have physical switches that can turn things on and off as you come and go throughout your house.

Logitech’s Pop buttons were introduced last year as one way to do that, and today they’re getting a major upgrade with the addition of HomeKit support. HomeKit support is enabled through a new Hub for the Pop buttons, which will be available exclusively through Apple at launch.

Hooking into HomeKit expands what the buttons can do in a huge way. They’ve always been programmable, so you can go into the Pop app and make them send commands to a variety of different connected devices. But they only worked with a subset of gadgets and lighting systems until this point. Now, with HomeKit, they’re able to control any device inside Apple’s growing smart home ecosystem.

A single Pop button can do three different actions: one with a single press, one with a double press, and another with a long press. That could let you set up a single button to turn devices on and off, activate a specific command, and trigger a preset that controls multiple devices.

It’s unfortunate that the Pop buttons require a hub, because that makes getting started with them a bit harder than being able to link them directly to an iPhone — a bit more expensive, too. The hub sells for $ 59.95 and comes with a single button, and additional buttons sell for $ 39.99. The Pop buttons aren’t changing at all as part of this announcement, so existing units can gain HomeKit support by being connected to one of the new hubs.
