Emma Stone to Star in The Curse Showtime Comedy From Uncut Gems’ Safdie Brothers and Nathan Fielder https://briefnews.eu/emma-stone-to-star-in-the-curse-showtime-comedy-from-uncut-gems-safdie-brothers-and-nathan-fielder/ https://briefnews.eu/emma-stone-to-star-in-the-curse-showtime-comedy-from-uncut-gems-safdie-brothers-and-nathan-fielder/#respond Thu, 10 Dec 2020 19:03:59 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/emma-stone-to-star-in-the-curse-showtime-comedy-from-uncut-gems-safdie-brothers-and-nathan-fielder/

Emma Stone‘s latest blessing is a real Curse.

The Oscar-winning actress will star in and executive-produce The Curse, an oddball scripted comedy that Showtime ordered to series Thursday, TVLine has learned.

The series follows a pair of newlyweds who co-star on a “problematic” HGTV series and are trying to start a family — if only an alleged curse weren’t seriously messing with their marriage.

Nathan for You‘s Nathan Fielder will co-star and direct. He’s also among the half-hour series’ executive producers, which includes Josh and Benny Safdie — aka Uncut Gems directors the Safdie Brothers. Benny Safdie will co-star in the series, as well.

“The fierce intelligence and wit of the incomparable Emma Stone make her the perfect partner with the ingenious minds of the Safdie brothers and the subversive comedy of Nathan Fielder,” Amy Israel, executive vice president, scripted programming, Showtime Networks said via statement. “Together, they promise to deliver a groundbreaking satire that is both unexpected and deeply human. Showtime continues to shine as a beacon for visionary filmmakers who are looking to create their ambitious, singular shows.”

In addition to films like La La Land, Birdman and Easy A, Stone has had several small-screen role gigs on shows like Drive, Medium and Malcolm in the Middle. In 2018, she starred opposite Jonah Hill in FX’s limited series Maniac.

Let’s block ads! (Why?)

AHS: 1984 Recap: Sins of the Mother (Plus, Who Created the ‘Blood Curse’?) https://briefnews.eu/ahs-1984-recap-sins-of-the-mother-plus-who-created-the-blood-curse/ https://briefnews.eu/ahs-1984-recap-sins-of-the-mother-plus-who-created-the-blood-curse/#respond Thu, 31 Oct 2019 06:35:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ahs-1984-recap-sins-of-the-mother-plus-who-created-the-blood-curse/ Wednesday’s American Horror Story welcomed back two popular players from previous seasons, though no one in 1984 was particularly happy to see them.

AHS: 1984 Lily RabeThe episode began with a look back at Jingles’ childhood trauma. In the summer of 1948, Benjamin Richter was just a chubby youngster at Camp Golden Star, where his mom (special guest star Lily Rabe!) worked as the camp’s miserable head cook. When she wasn’t feeding hungry campers, she was berating poor Benjamin for his antisocial tendencies.

And her love for him only diminished further when Benjamin failed to save his brother Bobby from getting caught in the engine of a motorboat. (In Benjamin’s defense, he got distracted watching the camp lifeguard having sex with some girl in the woods. And you know what? I probably would have done the same.)

We then returned to the “present,” where Donna was helping Brooke readjust to life among the living. After working through the side effects of her injection, Brooke had a new lease on life, especially once she caught wind of Margaret’s impending festival at Camp Redwood. “I do have a reason to live,” Brooke declared, “and it’s to see her die!” It’s also becoming very apparent that this is Margaret’s version of Fyre Festival, and that’s just wonderful.

American Horror Story Dylan McDermottUnfortunately, Donna and Brooke didn’t head back to camp alone; they were joined by Bruce (Dylan McDermott), a smooth-talking mustachioed gentleman who turned out to be a wanted serial killer. (On this show? Color me shocked.) And the more they tried to escape him, the worse their situation became. (Again, on this show? You. Don’t. Say.) After some Death Proof-level torture, Brooke and Donna managed to get the jump on Bruce, tying him to a roadside poll and cutting off a few of his fingers for good measure.

Jingles also made his way back to Camp Redwood, where he answered the dead counselors’ burning questions about why their souls are seemingly tethered to this godforsaken summer camp. As Jingles recalled, the “blood curse” began when his own mother slaughtered the counselors she held responsible for Bobby’s death. She also came after him, but he got the upper hand and killed her, at which point she became the first spirit trapped on the grounds.

Jingles arranged for a reunion with his momster, which somehow went even worse than I anticipated. She took way too much pleasure in revealing that she’s been instrumental in his undoing since Day 1. She’s even the reason Margaret went on her original killing spree back in 1970! “I took the one thing you cared about and I used it to destroy you,” Mama Jingles explained. “The wrong son died that day — it should have been you!” And if you thought the mother and son were going to make up after this, you must be new to American Horror Story. Instead, Jingles’ mother convinced him that the only way to defeat Richard and save his son was to kill himself… which is exactly what he did.

And just to complicate the story even further, we learned that Kajagoogoo — one of the bands slated to perform at Margaret’s festival — only achieved its fame by signing a deal with the devil, one Richard came to collect on this week. Cut to Leslie Jordan (sorry, “Courtney”) screeching at the discovery of a tour bus full of bloody corpses.

Your thoughts on this week’s AHS: 1984? Hopes for the season’s remaining two episodes? Whatever’s on your mind, drop it in a comment below.

  • Daylight-saving time, or DST, began in the US in 1918 as a way to conserve energy.
  • However, many Americans believe the practice is not worth the hassle.
  • Scientific studies also suggest that daylight-saving time may cause more problems than it solves.
  • There are two main proposals to get rid of DST: by creating fewer time zones or moving to one universal time.

On Sunday, November 4 at the stroke of 2:00 a.m., most people in North America will roll their clocks backward one hour to end daylight-saving time, or DST.

There’s some reason to celebrate: This will give hundreds of millions of people one extra hour of sleep. But on March 10, 2019, the invisible time vampire will return to suck away that hour of sleep. (Most of Europe ended DST on October 28 and will resume it on March 25.)

His wildcat oil firm spent a fortune looking for oil in Petronia, a former colony known for cashmere wool, long before anyone else was willing to take the risk. After sealing a deal with the long-ruling government, he was poised to reap the rewards. But in last year’s election, a new president came to power, promising a better deal for the people. Mr Lille fears she will reopen negotiations, further delaying any profits for the company or revenues for the country. She has invited four foreign “experts”, who have never set foot in the country before, to advise her. As he shares these concerns at a drinks reception at Hôtel Capitale, Mr Lille notices one of these foreign advisers sidling up to listen in.

Mr Lille does not exist. Neither does the country, Petronia. They appear instead in a new online game created by the Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI), a think-tank based in New York and London that seeks to improve the management of oil, gas and mineral wealth in developing countries. As a player, you take on the role of that pesky foreign adviser eavesdropping on Mr Lille. As well as the drinks reception, your adventures will take you to the presidential palace, the capital city’s cafés and markets, and the coastal district of Neftala, where the oil was discovered.

The Curse of Being the UK’s Home Secretary https://briefnews.eu/the-curse-of-being-the-uks-home-secretary/ https://briefnews.eu/the-curse-of-being-the-uks-home-secretary/#respond Sun, 27 May 2018 19:10:56 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-curse-of-being-the-uks-home-secretary/

News of Jacqui Smith’s appointment as Britain’s first female home secretary in June 2007 surprised party colleagues and the country’s media. Yet some were soon predicting the promotion might lead to the 44-year-old Smith being well-positioned to become a future prime minister. What could go wrong? Well, plenty, of course.

Fast-forward less than two years and the politician’s career was in ruins. Her reputation wrecked by Parliament’s expenses scandal — most notably the humiliating discovery that her husband, and office manager, had accidentally submitted a receipt to the Commons for pornographic videos he’d bought — Smith had little choice but to resign. “My whole life has been about trying to do the right thing … and this is hung around my neck,” she reflected sadly to one reporter.

Home secretaries just battle their way from one disaster to another.

Paul Osbourne, political commentator

Smith’s fate fueled a long-held belief that the job of home secretary had become a poisoned chalice, with occupants regularly brought down either by personal embarrassment or political misfortune. With him or her responsible for everything from immigration and crime statistics to policing and terrorism threats, London-based political commentator Paul Osbourne insists: “Home secretaries just battle their way from one disaster to another.”

Conservative politician Amber Rudd is the latest ex–home secretary to be licking her wounds. While considered an assured and impressive public performer, like Smith she was gone within two years. Rudd was forced out over the recent Windrush scandal, which saw longtime British residents born in the Caribbean suddenly threatened with deportation. “During that last fortnight, Amber Rudd proved she was not in control of her department,” Osbourne concludes.

Troublesome love lives have played a part in the story in recent years. Labour’s David Blunkett established himself as a no-nonsense politician ready to overhaul the British legal system for the sake of national security post-9/11. Blind since birth, Blunkett had an impressive story, having coped with obvious physical challenges while becoming one of the most powerful figures in the land. But an affair with married publisher Kimberly Quinn — with whom he fathered a son — proved his undoing. Blunkett was forced to resign at the end of 2004 amid accusations he’d used his position to fast-track a visa application for Quinn’s family nanny.

He wasn’t the only home secretary with a turbulent private life. Party colleague Alan Johnson, in the job for just 11 months before Labour’s general election defeat in May 2010, later had to contend with media revelations that his wife had been in a relationship with his police bodyguard at the time. Their 23-year marriage ended in 2014.

Others simply ran out of luck. Charles Clarke doggedly tried to weather a political storm in 2006 after a Home Office blunder led to more than 1,000 foreign criminals, including murderers, rapists and child abusers, being released into the community. When Labour performed badly at the subsequent local elections, Prime Minister Tony Blair concluded Clarke had to go.

His successor John Reid quickly made his mark by announcing the immigration system was “not fit for purpose” — but soon found himself a marked man. Talked up as a leadership opponent to Blair’s expected successor Gordon Brown, Reid was ruthlessly briefed against from inside his own party. While diplomatically playing down talk of bad blood, he left the government when Brown succeeded Blair as PM in June 2007.

Being home secretary does not always prevent career advancement, of course. Having held the post between 1993 and 1997, Michael Howard became Conservative leader in 2003. But he could never shed an unflattering public image dating back to his Home Office days. One particularly damaging incident was a famously disastrous interview with the BBC’s Jeremy Paxman, when the politician refused 12 times to answer whether he’d “threatened to overrule” prisons boss Derek Lewis. Howard lost the general election in 2005.

And let’s not forget the man often considered Britain’s greatest prime minister of all briefly had the job more than a century ago. The tenure of Winston Churchill, appointed in 1910 at age 35, is best remembered for his much-criticized decision to make a personal appearance at the “Siege of Sidney Street,” when the police and army were embroiled in a gunfight with two Latvian anarchists. His 2001 biographer Roy Jenkins concluded: “The trouble was that he then could not resist going to see the fun himself.” Churchill instead became political head of the Royal Navy by the autumn of 1911. It would be another three decades before he was called on to lead the country through World War II.

It was current U.K. leader Theresa May who overcame the modern-day home secretary curse, lasting six years in the job before her promotion to 10 Downing Street in 2016. However, Osbourne reckons May’s grip on the Home Office left her ill-prepared for life as PM. “At the Home Office she was known as a micromanager who didn’t like to delegate. You can’t do that as prime minister,” he says. Noting her unconvincing performance on the general election campaign trail last year — May’s Conservative Party lost its Parliament majority — Osbourne adds: “She could hide from most of that at the Home Office.”

So where does this leave newly appointed Home Secretary Sajid Javid? The first politician from an Asian background to hold the post, he can at least point to the current prime minister as a rare example of longevity, while the fates of other modern predecessors make for grim reading. Recent history suggests he could be fortunate to last more than two years.

‘Tomb Raider’ Review Round-Up: Does This Break The Video Game Movie Curse? Nope https://briefnews.eu/tomb-raider-review-round-up-does-this-break-the-video-game-movie-curse-nope/ https://briefnews.eu/tomb-raider-review-round-up-does-this-break-the-video-game-movie-curse-nope/#respond Wed, 14 Mar 2018 18:32:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tomb-raider-review-round-up-does-this-break-the-video-game-movie-curse-nope/ tomb raider review round-up

The Tomb Raider review embargo has lifted, and let’s just say the critics aren’t exactly enamored with the latest big-screen Lara Croft adventure. Not even Oscar winner Alicia Vikander is enough to elevate this video game movie – although there are some kind words here and there. Our full Tomb Raider review round-up is below.

Lara Croft is back on the big screen again in Tomb Raider, Roar Uthaug‘s adaptation of the popular video game series. Alicia Vikander is the titular tomb raider, embarking on a dangerous, globe-trotting quest. The character has had two previous big screen adaptations before – Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, both starring Angelina Jolie. Neither of those films were particularly good. So does Vikander’s take on the character rise above the previous films? Apparently not. The Tomb Raider review embargo has lifted, and the general consensus seems to be that this is yet another disappointing video game movie – a mixed bag at best.

Tomb Raider Review Round-Up

Entertainment Weekly‘s Leah Greenblatt offers one of the more positive takes on the film, saying that for all its flaws, Tomb Raider is “pretty good fun”:

“The latest big-screen iteration of the blockbuster video game isn’t a film for the ages, but it’s actually pretty good fun; an old-fashioned treasure-island adventure tale gilded in circa-2018 wokeness (Lara Croft’s breasts no longer command a lead supporting role) and anchored by an Oscar-winning actress far more gifted than the story requires. It’s also a vast improvement on the 2001 original starring Angelina Jolie, Jon Voight, and a pre-Bond Daniel Craig — which, revisited, has the distinct whiff of late-night ’90s Cinemax: erotic slow-mo shower scenes, hokey digital effects, prancing villains in George Hamilton tans.”

Over at Birth Movies Death, Russ Fischer praises Vikander’s “boundless energy”:

“Never let it be said that Vikander isn’t up to a challenge. Tomb Raider exploits her ability to injects a boundless energy into the Croft persona as she sweats through jungle chases, bike races, and dock brawls with a compulsively watchable level of effort. Vikander doesn’t make this all look easy. Rather, like that guy in those movies that the Tomb Raider franchise relies upon for inspiration, it’s just difficult enough that success feels like an accomplishment. “

IndieWire‘s Kate Erbland calls Tomb Raider “dumb fun” but says the film “can’t get away from the typical tropes of the genre”:

“Despite a fresher heroine, “Tomb Raider” still has all sorts of retrograde video game movie tropes. A cheesy voiceover serves as dunderheaded prologue, and all but consumes the narrative motion of the second act; flashbacks get out of hand in their attempts to round out Lara and Richard’s relationship. (In the film’s final moments, it even flashes back to a scene 90 seconds earlier.)”

Todd McCarthy at the Hollywood Reporter is another critic to single out Vikander’s performance, while also saying the film itself is lacking:

“When all the one-dimensional supporting characters and familiar action moves fall by the wayside, the one thing left standing is Vikander. Slim and not tall, she doesn’t cut the figure of a muscled powerhouse, but here she fully embodies physical tenacity and grit, along with absolute determination not to give in or up. The film strains credulity even for a vid-game fantasy by letting the leading lady recover awfully quickly from bad injuries, but other than that Vikander commands attention and is the element here that makes Tomb Raider sort of watchable.”

James Marsh at South China Morning Post says the film’s action – one of its chief selling-points – leaves much to be desired:

“Norwegian director Roar Uthaug (The Wave) makes the most of his locations, but the action is edited to ribbons, and an over-reliance on CG augmentation starves the more ambitious set pieces of any sense of threat or physicality.”

Slate‘s Inkoo Kang is one of the few critics to offer a genuinely positive review of Tomb Raider, describing the film as “thrilling”:

“An obligatory setup for a sequel slows down the final moments, but until then, Tomb Raider feels like a perfectly paced trio of espresso shots, with a shot of adrenaline to the heart as a chaser. It’s been a thrill to see so many physically powerful women on screen in recent years, but this deglammed Lara Croft feels like the rare heroine who proudly wears dirt under her chipped fingernails.”

Tomb Raider trailer

Reviewing the film for AP, Lindsey Bahr says Tomb Raider “isn’t half bad” and adds:

“[T]his video game adaption is better than most with set pieces that are both fun and ridiculous (like a high-stakes escape room) that actually seem to approximate the experience of playing a video game.”

Heroic Hollywood‘s Nick Kazden says Tomb Raider is “another mediocre film adaptation”, adding:

“Tomb Raider hits the basic requirements to be called a decent origin story. It’s just a pretty lackluster film overall. Sloppy visuals and unnecessary amounts of exposition take away from a movie that does a good job setting up Lara Croft as an interesting character.”

Game Informer‘s Imran Khan has good things to say about Vikander, and not-so-good-things to say about everything else:

“Tomb Raider is not without positive qualities, such as Vikander’s characterization and a few genuinely fun action scenes, but they are only redemptive of their individual moments and not the movie as a whole. If there is a curse on video game movies, Tomb Raider only breaks it insofar as being worth watching on a streaming service in the background while engaging in something more compelling.”

Over at Forbes, Scott Mendelson says “Alicia Vikander’s Lara Croft Deserves A Better Movie”, and adds:

“The good news is that the Oscar-winning actress offers an entertaining and occasionally devilish take on the famed video game heroine, on variation that can stand side-by-side with Jolie’s two attempts. The bad news is that the film is explicitly in “don’t screw it up” mode, going through the motions and offering somewhat generic action heroics and run-of-the-mill perils. It’s solidly decent, which for a video game movie qualifies as a miracle, but it gets off to such a solid start that it’s a little disappointing when it starts going through the motions. This is a franchise that should have skipped straight to the sequel.”

Slant‘s Jake Cole says the film is far too beholden to its video game roots:

“Then there are moments that translate video-game mechanics so literally that we see Lara do menial game tasks like use exposed beams as makeshift monkey bars for crossing gaps. This isn’t an adaptation of a video game so much as an adaptation of a video game’s tutorial level…”

Matt Singer at ScreenCrush says Tomb Raider is a “forgettable and thoroughly mediocre Indiana Jones knockoff,” going on to say:

“While the movie is never less than competently staged, it’s also rarely exciting or interesting enough to justify its existence. There is too much backstory about Lara, her absentee father, and his research, none of which matters. There’s even an “origin” scene for the two pistols Lara Croft carries around in most of her video games, contradicting their previous origin, which was that the creators of Tomb Raider franchise watched a ton of John Woo movies in the ’90s. Either way, who cares? If you’ve seen the previous movies, any of the Indiana Joneses, or YouTube videos of bow and arrow tricks, there’s nothing remotely new here.”

Jamie Broadnax, reviewing the film for Black Girl Nerds, says that film is entertaining enough to be worth a watch:

“Is Tomb Raider a movie you should take seriously and expect to be a groundbreaking film? No. Is this a movie that you can enjoy with a box of popcorn and see some cool action sequences and shoot-em-up adventures? Yes.”

Consequence of Sound‘s Clint Worthington offers another positive take, calling Tomb Raider a “genuinely good video game movie” and adding:

“For all the stigma attached to video-game adaptations, it would be a shame for Tomb Raider’s many charms to go forgotten. The Tomb Raider games had long ago shorn the elements that made Lara Croft such a gaming punchline, so it’s nice to see the films following suit. Vikander is a beautifully effective avatar for the American Ninja Warrior version of Lara Croft. Stripping down the bombast of the original games (and films) allows Uthaug’s reboot to feel comparatively grounded and immediate, without dragging itself down with unnecessary pathos.”

Tomb Raider opens March 16, 2018.

CANCER is a grim sort of growth market. By 2030 there will be over 22m new cases a year, up from 14m in 2012, according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer. But as the world marks World Cancer Day, on February 4th, scientists are speaking of a revolution in the battle to beat it. Money managers’ ears have pricked up. Oncology investing is “hot”.

The most straightforward way to invest in treating cancer is through shares in companies that sell blockbuster drugs. Alternatively, biotech indices track a basket of companies, of which typically 40% are oncology-related. Big Pharma now buys rather than builds much of its innovation. So backing oncology startups can be an especially lucrative (if risky) approach. According to CB Insights, a research firm, equity investment in cancer-therapeutics startups has grown from $ 2bn in 2013 to $ 4.5bn in 2017. Take Juno Therapeutics, founded in Seattle in 2013 to develop immunotherapy drugs. It was acquired on January 22nd by Celgene, a Biotech giant, for a whopping $ 9bn.
