Croatia reached world football’s premier match with a 2-1 extra time win over England at Luzhniki Stadium on Wednesday to set up a final showdown with France at the same stadium on Sunday.
“We followed the game over dinner,” Grabar-Kitarovic said as she entered the last sessions of the NATO summit early Thursday, AP reported.
“It was wonderful because all the allies were cheering for all of us, mostly,” she added, before giving her forecast: “This will be a successful summit and we will win on Sunday.”
Grabar-Kitarovic, who sat at the table together with French President Emmanuel Macron and was photographed at the event with US president Donald Trump, has every right to feel assured of success.
Croatia captain Luka Modric and his men overcame a 1-0 scoreline provided by an early Kieran Trippier free kick with a second half equalizer from Ivan Perisic and a 109th minute winner from striker Mario Mandzukic.
President Grabar-Kitarovic previously made headlines when she was snapped in the stands at Fisht Stadium in Sochi wearing a Croatia national team jersey at the match versus hosts Russia on Sunday.
Although Russia’s prime minister Dmitry Medvedev looked less than impressed in the same VIP box, the Balkan nation prevailed by a 4-3 penalty scoreline after the match ended 2-2 in normal time.
France reached the match by virtue of a 1-0 win over Belgium in St. Petersburg, cementing their third final in 20 years since winning the trophy at their home World Cup in 1998.

Arsene Wenger promised Russian fans that they would meet again at the 2018 World Cup this summer. The Arsenal manager was speaking after his side dumped CSKA Moscow out of the Europa League.
The Gunners shot down a spirited come back from CSKA, who were battling to overcome a 4-1 first-leg scoreline. The home side was left needing to replicate Roma’s earlier heroics against Barcelona when they overturned the same first-leg scoreline.
CSKA started well, going two-nil up through Fedor Chalov and Kirill Nababkin before Danny Welbeck and a late Aaron Ramsey strike gave Arsenal a 2-2 draw on the night 6-3 aggregate win overall.

In the post-match press conference, the Frenchman was in high spirits after securing a place in the semi-final draw where they could meet either Atletico Madrid, Red Bull Salzburg or Marseille. Wenger is bidding to reach the final in Lyon and win his first European trophy with Arsenal.
That mood was heightened when he was presented with a traditional Russian hat as part of the ‘Gentlefan’ action, which promotes warm relationships between Russian and English fans ahead of the World Cup this summer.
At the final whistle, Wenger hugged his CSKA counterpart, Viktor Goncharenko, and offered words of condolence, which he then revealed to media.
“I congratulated him because I felt in the two matches they played well, overall, especially tonight,” the 68-year-old said.
“They made my heart beat much quicker than I expected to be and I wished him good luck for the rest of the season.”
Aleksandr Golovin, who scored CSKA’s only goal in London in the first-leg, has long been on Arsenal’s radar. Wenger remained characteristically tight-lipped when asked about the Russian man’s performance.
“I would say Golovin is a very interesting player. He had an outstanding game tonight again… But at the moment we are not in transfer mode. I would say that I couldn’t see one bad player in CSKA Moscow tonight,” Wenger said.
Before leaving the press conference, three-time Premier League winner Wenger told fans “Goodbye, I will be back in World Cup!” much to the delight of the gathered press. The 2018 Russia World Cup will kick off on June 14 at Luzhniki Stadium in the very same city as Wenger led Arsenal to victory on Thursday night.

Former Portugal international Nuno Gomes says that in his eyes, the team led by Cristiano Ronaldo can win this year’s FIFA World Cup in Russia. Gomes notes that hard situations ‘historically’ always worked in their favor.
The 41-year-old former striker, capped more than 80 times at the senior level for his home country, was recently in Sochi. The city is known for being the venue of the 2014 Olympic Games, and will also serve as one of the host cities for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
The Portuguese international came to the southern Russian resort city to take a part in the opening ceremony of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Football Park over the last weekend. He exclusively spoke to RT about the upcoming Mundial and the favorites for the tournament.
“Of course Germany, they have a beautiful team. They won the Confederations Cup, [and] not with the strongest roster they can have. And of course Brazil, they have a tremendous team and tremendous players. I hope that Neymar will arrive in good condition. There are a lot of great teams: Argentina with Messi; Belgium is a good team also. Iceland is one of the teams that could be a surprise. I would also say Russia, because they are playing at home, and have good young players.”
Gomes also picked up the teams that, in his view, have the best chances of making it to the semi-finals.
“If I had to pick, I’d say that Brazil, Germany, Portugal and Spain will make it to the semi-finals, but from there teams will also need luck to move further. I hope all teams will arrive in good condition, so we will have a wonderful World Cup with a lot of amazing games.”
Talking about the chances for his native Portugal, the veteran pointed out that not being a favorite in the eyes of the fans and pundits can actually play in the team’s favor.
“One of the biggest challenges (for Portugal) is (the fact) that we are European champions. A lot of eyes are looking at our national team. That could increase our responsibility. If one has to choose one favorite (for the World Cup), and ask around, I don’t know if people will choose Portugal. But for me Portugal is one of the favorites, we just have to go step by step, because we are in the group – they can be easy, but can turn difficult. The Portuguese team historically tends to relax when things are easy. So we don’t have to be the favorites, but we have to prove it on the field.”

They are the same colors and nickname now represented by five-time world’s best player Lionel Messi, the current Argentina captain, who will defend them at Russia during the World Cup 2018 this summer.
Gallardo made 44 appearances for La Albiceleste, representing his nation in the 1998 and 2002 World Cup finals. Since retiring, he has moved into management, gaining recognition for his success with River Plate, which included winning the Copa Libertadores in 2015.
He is a man that knows just what it means to pull on that famed jersey at a World Cup finals.
“I think that the point is you feel like you represent your team and your country,” Gallardo reminisced about his 1998 World Cup. “I think that it creates a fountain of intense emotions. Very intense because it is not just about patriotism, it is about playing in a jersey that has your country’s colors. You enjoy that the most, the process of playing.”
The former attacking midfielder has said that there is a buzz about the nation heading into the latest edition of the tournament, believing the 2014 losing finalists can go on further this year. And it’s all down to one man – Lionel Messi.
“I think Argentina has always been a leader in global football,” Gallardo said from River Plate’s magnificent Estadio Antonio Vespucio Liberti stadium. “I think now there are two or three teams in the world better than Argentina’ first Brazil, then Germany and Spain, and then us.
“Now that we have Messi on our team, we have a chance to win. We have this feeling. We feel like we can become the central team because we have Messi. But three national teams: Brazil, Germany and Spain, are better than us.”
Barcelona legend Messi visited Moscow in November 2017 to introduce the official FIFA 2018 World Cup Russia ball, and will play at Luzhniki Stadium against Iceland in the Russian capital.
Gallardo’s club side also carry a prestigious nickname. Known as “Los Millonarios”, River Plate have one of the richest histories in South American football and it was here that one of the world’s greatest ever players and future Real Madrid legend, Alfredo Di Stefano, began his career.
The team enjoy a fierce rivalry with Buenos Aires rivals Boca Juniors, where another Argentine rough diamond was uncovered – the great Diego Maradona, the man that Messi is so often compared to.
In his owns words, Maradona believes if Messi is to eclipse his career, he must win the World Cup. In Gallardo’s mind, and in that of many Argentinians, he stands the best chance of doing so at Russia 2018.

“We just might have lost the World Cup last Sunday,” one radio commentator, Milton Neves of Bandnews FM, said early Wednesday.
LATEST: Neymar’s injury verdict
Sunday was the day when Paris Saint-Germain thrashed Marseille 3-0 — but with Neymar suffering a hairline fracture of the fifth metatarsal in his right foot as well as a twisted ankle.
That’s an injury that could cost dearly when talking about the world’s most expensive player, recruited by PSG for 222 million euros ($ 271 million) last August.
Brazilians care little about the impact on the Paris club. Their attention is entirely trained on the World Cup, where they have ambitions of walking away with a sixth championship.
Neymar’s father said Tuesday his son would be out for at least six weeks. If that holds, Neymar could still return to form for the World Cup, which starts mid-June. But an operation could see him miss the end of the European season with PSG.
In his home country, images of the fateful duel between “Ney” and Marseille player Bouna Sarr were being shown incessantly on TV, often in slo-mo, before the 26-year-old was stretchered off. Newspapers featured close-up illustrations detailing Neymar’s foot and ankle.
In both Brazil and France, medical orthopedic and trauma specialists were getting considerable airplay as they weighed in on what should happen. Most recommended surgery.
“I don’t think we can really talk about fears of him not being at the World Cup. But there is a noticeable haste to find a solution so that Neymar will have recovered in time,” an ESPN Brasil sports commentator, Mauro Cezar Pereira, told AFP.
It was to that channel that Neymar Senior said on Tuesday: “PSG know that they will not be able to count on Neymar for the upcoming matches: his treatment will last six to eight weeks, whether there is an operation or not.”
The father said the decision on surgery was up to PSG, not Neymar.
“I’m not a doctor, so we have to wait for the club’s decision,” he said.
According to the Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper, Neymar’s contract has a clause saying he must follow the club’s line regarding injuries. The news website UOL reported that those close to Neymar were believed to want him to have an operation in Brazil.
As the star’s fate is being worked out, messages of support were flooding social networks.
Brazilian football legend Pele — whose mantle Neymar is seen inheriting — tweeted: “Hey Neymar, all of Brazil hopes you will recover as quickly as last time! We have a World Cup to win, so get better fast!”
There was also a poignant little Instagram post from his TV actress girlfriend Bruna Marquezine: “I love you and miss you.”
Famous former striker Ronaldo put forth on Globo TV to draw on his experience as a player hit with injury before a World Cup.
“It’s a shame that happened now. No recovery is easy. But I’m sure he’ll do everything he can to come back in form,” Ronaldo said.
“It’s not a serious injury. There’s no danger of him not playing in the World Cup.”
For Carlos Eduardo Mansur, commentator in the newspaper O Globo, “Neymar’s injury is not a tragedy because he’ll have the time to recover and maybe even go to the World Cup fresher, but it’s bad news for (Brazil national team manager) Tite, for whom the friendly matches in March were fundamental.” Due to the uncertainty thrown up by when Neymar and other players will be available, the Brazilian football federation has delayed naming its squad for friendlies against Russia and Germany in late March by 10 days.
The last time the Selecao confronted Germany, Neymar was also injured. That was in the 2014 World Cup semi-finals, when Brazil suffered its most humiliating defeat: a 7-1 loss on home ground.
Brazilian football legend Pelé has spoken to RT about his remarkable life and career in the game, including the touching moment when, as a young boy, he vowed to his father he would win the World Cup for the nation.
Arguably football’s most iconic figure, Pelé saw a career that spanned more than 20 years, during which he scored more than 1,000 goals, including a record 77 in 92 games for the Brazilian national team.
His long list of honors includes three World Cup titles – Sweden in 1958, Chile in 1962, and Mexico in 1970 – and he played at four finals in all as part of some of the greatest sides ever to grace the game.
In an exclusive interview with RT’s Stan Collymore, the Brazilian great, now 77, recalls how he vowed to his father he would win football’s most coveted prize in the wake of the national team’s stunning loss to Uruguay in the last game of their home 1950 World Cup, which deprived the Brazilians of the title.

“My father was a professional football player in Bauru, the city where I used to live,” Pelé told Collymore.
“And then the World Cup [took place] in Brazil. I was just 10 years old, and I said, ‘Oh my God, Brazil is the best football team, we are going to win the World Cup, we are going to be champions’ and then Brazil lost.
“For the first time [in my life] I saw my father crying. He was with other players in my house to listen to the game, as at that time we didn’t have TV. Then I saw my father crying. I didn’t understand why he was crying, because I was always told that men don’t cry. I said ‘Father, don’t cry. I’m going to win the World Cup for you, don’t cry.’ I said it to him just to make him happy, because it was a big surprise to me.”
Pelé would make good on that promise just eight years later, when despite being a teenager he electrified the world at the 1958 tournament in Sweden – at which he scored a hat-trick in the final.
“[Sweden 1958] was my first traveling outside Brazil, we came there and nobody knew anything about Brazil,” Pelé explained.
“Then one reporter came to me and asked me through an interpreter how was Buenos Aires. I said, ‘listen, Buenos Aires is in Argentina, not in Brazil.’ I was so mad. They didn’t know in Sweden where Brazil was, they were confusing Brazil with Uruguay and Paraguay. I was mad. This was my first experience when I came there.
“When we won the World Cup I had to go outside to call my father and say, ‘did you see? we won!,’ as then we didn’t have communications straight from the stadium… Can you imagine that today? It’s quite a different world now. It was very important to me, I was 17 years old and it was my first World Cup. It opened the door of the world for me.”
That success brought Pelé to the attention of the wider world, but also meant the precocious youngster was often a marked man – and he came in for particularly brutal treatment at the hands of opponents in both the 1962 and 1966 editions of the World Cup.
“At that time it was normal as every game was tough,” he said. “The worst [championship] for me was in 1966 in England. Because in 1962 I played the first three games before being injured. And Brazil won the World Cup, and it was not too painful for me. And in 1966 I was injured again and I couldn’t play, and Brazil lost the World Cup. I think the 1966 World Cup was the most difficult for me.”
Despite the setback of Brazil failing to claim three World Cup titles in a row, the team bounced back in style in 1970 in Mexico – a team with such attacking flair it is widely regarded as one of the best to ever play the game.
That tournament is also remembered for the iconic image of Pelé and England great Bobby Moore embracing after the group stage game in Guadalajara, in which Brazil ran out 1-0 winners.
Answering Collymore’s question on what “the iconic photo of friendship, competitiveness and respect” meant to him, Pelé said he and late England captain Moore had actually become friends after that moment.
“It’s amazing, because we became friends after that. To me he was the best player. Because he was very tough but at the same time very honest. No doubt for me he was one of the best players.”
On whether the Brazil team of 1970 was the best to ever play the game, Pelé said considering the talent in the ranks, it should go down as at least the best ever to wear the famous yellow jersey.
“For me it was the best team from the four World Cups I played for Brazil. No doubt it was one of the best teams, but we have a nice history. Because you know, when we were preparing for the World Cup, our coach at that time, Mario Zagallo, selected forwards from Santos and Flamengo, he chose Rivelino from Corinthians and Gerson [from Sao Paolo], and the four players wore number 10. All the newspapers wrote that we couldn’t work in one team, because we got Pelé, Rivelino, Gerson and Tostao all wearing number 10. But this was the best team in Brazil’s history. It was a fantastic team.
“Of course I got number 10. No doubt, this was the best moment of my life. The 1970 World Cup was a big responsibility. I just said, ‘God you gave all those victories in my life. I cannot say goodbye being defeated.’ This was very difficult to me, because I took part in four World Cups out of which Brazil won three. This was my last World Cup, as I didn’t have an idea to participate in one more World Cup, I wanted to say goodbye. And thanks God he gave us a victory.”
Despite the huge respect Pelé enjoyed in Europe – as well across the wider world – there were rumors he was prevented from traveling to the continent to play at club level. The Brazilian great’s career spanned 20 years at local team Santos, before a lucrative move to the New York Cosmos for his twilight years in 1975-77.
Asked if there was any truth to stories that Brazilian football authorities had prevented him from moving to Europe, Pelé admitted that there had been approaches from clubs, including Spanish giants Real Madrid and English club Manchester United, but that he had always “felt comfortable” plying his trade in his home country.
“The president of Santos came to talk to me and my father, saying that they [were contacted] by Real Madrid and Manchester United who had good offers for me. I didn’t know exactly what they offered. And later we talked with my father, he asked me whether I wanted to play in Europe and I said that I felt comfortable in Brazil. Santos was the country’s best club, we won two World Cups with the club. I didn’t feel like [I want] to leave. Then I spent my entire career, almost 20 years, in Santos.”
Given his advancing age, Pelé has been less of a familiar face at showpiece footballing events in recent years – although he made the trip to Moscow for the Russia 2018 World Cup Final Draw earlier in December, being pictured with President Vladimir Putin and fellow legend Diego Maradona.
Asked about his thoughts on Brazil’s chances next year in Russia, as well as the team’s star man, Neymar, the elder footballing statesmen was complimentary.
“Neymar is from Santos. My son Edinho, who worked with the juniors at Santos, coached him. When he left Santos I spoke with his father and he thought it was a great opportunity [for Neymar] to go to Barcelona. And he went there, to make a long story short, I think it was good for him to have that experience, because Barcelona always has the best players. Now he knows what he wants to prove. He wants to be the best player in the word.
“I think [Russia] will be very important for [Brazil]. I was talking a lot about what happened in my life. I wish to stay healthy to watch that World Cup. And if God listens to what I say, Brazil will be at least in the final.”
Russia, and the wider football world, will certainly hope to see the great man at next year’s World Cup.

Iceland, who created a sensation by reaching the quarterfinals at Euro 2016, is aiming to perform even better at the FIFA World Cup in Russia, team manager Heimir Hallgrimsson told RT.
“We played in the quarterfinals [at Euro 2016] and lost 5-2 against France. Maybe our goals were too low?” Hallgrimsson said. “I’m not going to say we’re going to win the World Cup now, but at least we are aware of that in our heads. We plan to stay here a little bit longer than maybe we did at the Euros.”
Recalling Iceland’s historic 2-1 win over England at Euro-2016, the coach said: “If you’re on your good day, you can beat almost anyone. And we’ve shown it through the years. If we have a good game we, at least, have a chance against good football nations.” “The boys have shown that the bigger the event, the more focused and disciplined and better they play,” he added.
Foresight is essential for a good manager and Hallgrimsson, who was speaking to RT ahead of the FIFA World Cup draw at the Kremlin on Friday, was able to guess one of his team’s rivals at Russia 2018. “Small European nations like Iceland don’t get a chance to play big nations like Argentina or Brazil,” he complained, with Iceland, eventually, being drawn against a tough trio of Argentina, Croatia and Nigeria.
Hallgrimsson said that Iceland has already selected the location for its base during the World Cup, which runs from June 14 to July 15, 2018, opting for the famous Black Sea resort of Geledzhik, not far from Sochi. “Good weather. Icelanders love good weather. We stay normally in cold weather, so we like the warmth. And it’s a good facility,” he said, explaining the choice.
It’s going to be the first-ever World Cup for the small island nation, which has a population of just over 300,000. The Icelanders are looking to spend as much time as possible at home during the preparations. “That’s the best period of the year, June. It’s good to be in Iceland. The players are all playing abroad. So they also like to stay in Iceland. It’s a relaxing factor before the excitement in Russia,” the coach said.

As for Iceland’s rivals in friendly matches in the run-up to the World Cup, the country will be looking for fixtures with African and South American teams. “We’ve played so few games against teams from outside Europe. So that was the preference in the games. Just to play a different style of football opponents,” Hallgrimsson said.

They battled through to a 2-1 win over Costa Rica as the USA missed out on qualification for the first time since 1986
The US started the night in third qualifying place but ended up fifth after losing 2-1 to Trinidad & Tobago.
However, it was the drama unfolding in Panama’s win against Costa Rica that had everyone talking.
There were plenty of questions raised over whether Panama’s first goal should have counted in the 52nd minute after a goalmouth scramble from Gabriel Torres didn’t appear to cross the line.
Replays suggested the ball did not make it over the line but the referee gave it anyway.
There is no goal-line technology in use during CONCACAF qualifying.
With the scores level going unto the final few minutes, Roman Torres popped up with the winner in the 87th minute to spark wild celebrations.
And as Panama desperately tried to hold on to their narrow lead one of their substitutes caused further controversy.
With the ball out of play on the touchline, a substitute ran towards the ball and kicked it high into the stands to stop the Costa Rica winger taking a quick throw-in and ultimately wasted some time.
His tactics worked as Panama held on to secure victory and progress to the World Cup at the USA’s expense.
USA boss Bruce Arena said: “We had everything there for us.
“We failed on the day. No excuses. We failed today. We should have walked off this field with at least a point.
“We should not be staying at home for this World Cup and I take responsibility.”
USA have 21 days to appeal against the Panama ghost goal that crushed their World Cup dreams.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport have specific guidelines that come into place on occasions when sides or individuals believe they have been wronged.
The US appear not to be planning to appeal with spokesman Michael Kammarman today saying: “As far as I know there is no recourse. Decisions of the referee are final.”
Although there is a route they could go down to avoid missing out on the World Cup 2018.
Rules from CONCACAF say an appeal can be filed for “parties directly affected by a decision”, which in this case would be America.
Deputy Prime Minister Mutko, who is also deputy chairman of the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia Local Organizing Committee Supervisory Board, summarized the results of the recent 2017 Confederations Cup in Russia’s State Duma on Tuesday, TASS reported.
“We expect to that up to a million tourists will visit Russia next year (for the World Cup),” the deputy PM said.
“It has been stressed at the meeting that the Confederations Cup is the prologue of the World Cup,” said Mutko, talking about the final meeting at the Confederations Cup organizing headquarters.
“We have to make conclusions and start preparations for the World Cup literally today,” he added.
The Confederations Cup was hosted in Russia for the first time this summer from June 17 to July 2 across four cities – Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan and Sochi.
The 2018 FIFA World Cup will take place in 11 Russian cities from June 14 to July 15.
