Michael Schulman interviews Robert De Niro.
Robert De Niro doesn’t give a lot of interviews — and when he does, he’s known to be a tough one. He’s not combative or evasive; he just does what he does, and doesn’t really like to talk about it. But Schulman’s sit-down for the New Yorker gets some good quotes out of the iconic actor, particularly on how his best-known characters relate to the current cultural moment:
I do find it interesting that you’ve played so many men who’ve felt this rage and alienation—even Jack Byrnes in “Meet the Parents,” who can’t access his emotions. Between Trump and #MeToo, it’s been a rough couple years for masculinity. What does being a real man mean to you?
Being a real man is not just being a man the way you’d think. If you think that I should do this or that or I’m not a man—I’m sorry. Men are much more complex, and there are many more sides to them. You gotta be sensitive. You gotta care about people, have empathy. And someone like Trump, he’s got something screwed loose in his head. But it’s through some deep insecurity that he actually behaves the way he does, because it’s all bullshit. And people buy into that with him, with his behavior. It’s sad. That’s not what life is about. But some people are in cultures where they’re all like that, they all reinforce it in each other. The sensitive ones are afraid to say anything. I made a movie, “A Bronx Tale,” and those kids, they don’t want to look like they’re not tough with their peers. The bottom line is, you gotta be an individual and you gotta stand up and be who you are.
That’s a good way to put it: toughness. People see Trump as tough—
He’s not tough.
—but your work has explored toughness in a lot of different varieties, and there’s good toughness and bad toughness.
You don’t have to behave the way he does. That’s just bullshit bravado. It has nothing to do with anything. If you’re tough, you’d be making decisions that he hasn’t made.
Steve Edwards on aging and reading.
We can all agree (well, those of us who aren’t jerks) that few things are as exciting and enlightening as a trip to the bookstore, wandering the aisles, deciding what deserves not only our hard-earned money, but our hard-fought attention. In an insightful personal essay at Lithub, author Edwards notes the difference between taking that trip in his 20s and taking it now, in his 40s — how the book stack used to tell him who he wanted to be, and now it says much about who he is and was.
I’d started coming to bookstores because I wanted to learn how to write and the only consistent advice I got from established writers was to read everything. It was good advice. It’s still good advice. It’s also impossible. No one reads everything, nor even all the books they’d like to. You make your choices, come what may. John Muir’s famous quote about ecology might as well have been about choosing what books to buy: “When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the Universe.” The bookstore is a liminal space. Even if like me you don’t have the cash to buy a box of new titles and reinvent yourself week to week, you have the moment of the choosing and everything it tugs upon.
As a young writer, I thought I had to read widely in order to learn different authors’ styles and sentence structures and voices. I thought I needed a sense of what sang and what sold, what had been done and done to death. But what I needed more than anything were the consequences of my choices. I needed to live the lives the books I read compelled me to lead—to be brave, big-hearted, open to surprise and welcoming of mystery. Until I had a lived, my study of sentences was nothing more than a corkboard of pin-stuck insects arranged by genus and species. I could gain knowledge from such cold classifications but it wasn’t the same as standing in some open mountain meadow, flowers teeming with wings, crickets under every rock. What I needed was the quality of attention the writers I loved brought to the page, their fidelity to translating perception into sequences of language that edified me for losing (and finding) myself in them. If I wanted to understand crickets, I had to become like the grasses in the meadow soaking up every call.
Julia Alexander on “Mystery Brand.”
Few writers are as skilled at navigating the confounding waters of YouTube “influencers” like Alexander, and her latest for The Verge is a doozy: Jake Paul and Brian “RiceGum” Le are in hot water for running sponsored videos for a sketchy company called Mystery Brand, “a form of loot box-style gambling” in which buyers might win valuable prizes like designer clothes, high-dollar sneakers, and even cars and houses. But probably not. And YouTube isn’t doing a thing about it.
“YouTube believes that creators should be transparent with their audiences if their content includes paid promotion of any kind,” a YouTube spokesperson told The Verge before Le’s apology video was posted. “Our policies make it clear that YouTube creators are responsible for ensuring their content complies with local laws, regulations and YouTube Community Guidelines. If content is found to violate these policies, we take action to ensure the integrity of our platform, which can include removing content.”
YouTube’s policy allows for responsible gambling ads, with restrictions and protections for those watching, but the site doesn’t consider Mystery Brands or loot box-style games as gambling. Essentially, Paul’s and Le’s videos exist in a very specific gray area. YouTube’s policies do state that creators can not promote spam, deceptive practices, or scams, even through partnerships. If YouTube determines a company is taking advantage of users, its policy is to take down sponsored videos for violating the company’s community guidelines — but so far, it’s not clear whether Mystery Brand has broken those rules. But those policy nuances haven’t stopped other creators from calling out Paul and Le for intentionally misleading their followers.
Todd VanDerWerff on why cultural criticism matters.
And here’s one more year-end piece, which snuck in just under the wire on New Year’s Eve. It’s been a rough damn year for arts criticism. The Village Voice is gone, and Voice Media is shuttering its TV and film verticals. The AV Club, BuzzFeed, The Fader, and this very site have seen layoffs for critical voices. And it’s easy to assume that in this moment where the stakes of our politics are literally life and death, such losses are acceptable — after all, it’s just entertainment. Vox‘s VanDerWerff argues the contrary.
Once we know where we’re going, all of this will make more sense. But culture writing isn’t about predicting the future — it’s about predicting the present.
When I make the above argument in favor of cultural criticism to journalistic colleagues who deal in what might be dubbed the “hard sciences” of journalism — data-driven, boots-on-the-ground reporting — I am always aware that it sounds just a little fantastical. And there have been many times that I and my critical brethren have just plumb missed something burbling away in the national subconscious. Few critics looked at the pop culture of the early 2010s and said, “Yep, a culture war’s brewing,” even if it seems blindingly obvious in hindsight.
You can attribute at least some of missing that particular boat to the geographical concentration of cultural critics in New York and Los Angeles (where I live). The homogeneity of critics — too many of us are white, too many of us are male, and too many of us live on one of the coasts — is a real problem that needs to be corrected sooner, rather than later, if we are to better understand the dreams a multicultural nation is having, sometimes in parallel and sometimes in bloody intersection.

Russia’s northern capital, Saint Petersburg, has been named the world’s leading cultural city destination for the third consecutive year. The award is traditionally handed out by the World Travel Awards (WTA).
Saint Petersburg, that once again justified its rank as the Russian cultural capital, triumphed over Beijing, London, New York City, Paris, the Ecuadorian capital of Quito, Rio de Janeiro, Rome, Sydney, and Venice.
The red carpet ceremony was held in the Portuguese capital of Lisbon. WTA annually awards leaders in tourism, airlines, and hotel and hospitality sectors. Ranked as the travel industry’s most prestigious awards programme, WTA was founded in 1993 and includes an international jury of hospitality experts and peers, mainly from the World Travel and Tourism Council.
Saint Petersburg became the world’s leading cultural city destination in both 2016 and 2017. In 2015, the WTA jury awarded the northern city the title of Europe’s leading destination. Earlier this year, the city won the title of Europe’s best cruise destination.
St. Petersburg, which is home to the Hermitage Museum and the Mariinsky Ballet, has been in focus of the prestigious award for its exceptionally rich history, centuries-old traditions, and bright future.
The cultural capital of Russia is stunningly attractive for travelers. The city is one of the most visited by both domestic and international tourists. In 2017, Saint Petersburg was visited by 7.2 million people compared to 6.9 million tourists in the previous year, according to the latest data by the city’s tourism committee.

Every year, nearly 34,000 cases of cancer in the US can be attributed to HPV, the human papillomavirus . The CDC estimates that vaccination could prevent around 93 percent of those cancers. Yet HPV vaccination rates are abysmal: only half of the teenagers in the US were fully vaccinated in 2017.
Cultural barriers play a role in that low rate. Vaccinating pre-teens against a sexually transmitted infection has had parents concerned that that this would encourage their kids to have sex sooner, with more partners, or without protection or birth control. And vaccine rates vary across different social and cultural groups: for instance, rural teenagers are less likely to be vaccinated than urban ones.
Two recent studies explore different facets of the cultural barriers standing in the way of better HPV vaccine uptake. The first, a paper published last month in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, looks at the data on whether the vaccine encourages riskier sexual behavior and finds no evidence that it does. And the second, an early draft of a paper presented at an American Association for Cancer Research meeting this week, reports the results of a culturally-targeted intervention aiming to increase vaccine uptake among low-income Chinese Americans.

The controlled demolition of a 53-meter disused cement silo in Denmark went spectacularly wrong in front of hundreds of spectators, when explosives pushed the building in the wrong direction, crushing part of a cultural center.
Vordingborg Mayor Mikael Smed said that, thankfully, there were no injuries since the town’s Cultural Market adjacent to the blast site had been cleared of people beforehand. “I was as shocked as all the many others who had set up in a safe distance to witness the blast as the silo suddenly overturned the wrong way,”Smed said. “Fortunately, the Cultural Market was one of the safety-restricted areas, so no people stayed in the building.”
The shocking incident occurred on Friday, with management of the arts and library building announcing that a number of offices were crushed by falling masonry.
“As you know, the explosion of the silo at the Cultural Market did not go according to plan,” a statement from the center read. “It hit the corner of the market and damaged a number of offices. The library has closed Saturday, Sunday and Monday.”
Images taken by bystanders reveal how the cylindrical structure collapsed away from a designated fall area and towards six buildings housing offices and a library.

Lauren Greenfield, the filmmaker behind the acclaimed 2012 documentary The Queen of Versailles, is back. Her newest movie, Generation Wealth, is an exploration of materialism, cultural excess, and the perversion and mutation of the American Dream. The film is gripping and horrifying in equal measure. Check out the new Generation Wealth trailer below and see what I mean.
Greenfield is a photographer who’s spent nearly three decades documenting wealth in various forms across the globe. This documentary is the culmination of all of that work, as Greenfield attempts to understand society’s obsession with money and excess – and her own obsession with it, as well. I saw the doc at Sundance, and while there are spectacular, jaw-dropping moments in it that will make you question everything you think you know about human decency, it’s just as much about watching Greenfield’s personal journey through this madness as she struggles to come to grips with her own choices in life.
I’d encourage you to read my entire review, but if you’re pressed for time, here’s the closing paragraph:
Tracing the evolution of the American Dream from valuing frugality and hard work to valuing the enticing but fleeting pleasures of fame and fortune, Generation Wealth provides a sobering reflection of society’s addictions, elucidates the unwinnable trap of Gordon Gecko’s “greed is good” mentality, and illustrates primal truths about the things that truly matter in life. It’s a fascinating and often horrifying tour of ravenous indulgence, and will almost certainly be one of the best documentaries of 2018.
Here’s the film’s official description:
For the past 25 years acclaimed photographer and filmmaker Lauren Greenfield (The Queen of Versailles, Thin, kids+money, # likeagirl) has travelled the world, documenting with ethnographic precision and an artist’s sensitivity a vast range of cultural movements and moments. Yet, after so much seeking and searching, she realized that much of her work pointed at one uniting phenomenon: wealth culture. With her new film, Generation Wealth, she puts the pieces of her life’s work together for in an incendiary investigation into the pathologies that have created the richest society the world has ever seen.
Spanning consumerism, beauty, gender, body commodification, aging and more, Greenfield has created a comprehensive cautionary tale about a culture heading straight for the cliff’s edge. Generation Wealth, simultaneously a deeply personal journey, rigorous historical essay, and raucously entertaining expose, bears witness to the global boom-bust economy, the corrupted American Dream and the human costs of capitalism, narcissism and greed.
Generation Wealth will arrive in theaters on July 20, 2018.

It has improved access to London for commuter towns as well as to previously shunned seaside resorts that are fast becoming desirable cultural hotspots thanks to artists and creative types quietly colonising them, attracted by the relatively cheap property prices.
Now a new cultural trail will connect arts facilities on what is being called the Creative Coast.
And while it has been set up to boost tourism it will also add to the facilities on the doorsteps of new property developments.
Culture Coasting was launched late last year to create an arts “treasure hunt” using GPS geocaching technology on a trail from Southend-on-Sea in Essex through Whitstable, Margate and Folkestone in Kent to Hastings, Bexhill and Eastbourne in East Sussex – all towns with important regeneration plans.
One of the driving forces behind Culture Coasting is Turner Contemporary, the art gallery opened in 2011 on Margate seafront.
It has led the regeneration of the town, contributing £58million to the local economy through tourism and inward investment.
And in Folkestone, the Creative Foundation arts charity is dedicated to helping the town’s regeneration through creative activity to make it a better place to live, work, study in and visit.
Since it was formed in 2002 it has helped transform the old town around the harbour into a Creative Quarter bringing more than 500 jobs thanks to workshops for artists, a sixth form and university outpost, plus the Quarterhouse performance venue, Folkestone Artworks collection and annual book festival.

New housing developments in Kent include Victory Pier in Gillingham, which is part of a 20-year regeneration programme for Medway that aims to create up to 16,000 new homes and more than 20,000 new jobs.
Victory Pier is a waterfront development of one, two and three-bedroom apartments on the River Medway, with access to a gym and wifi lounge.
Prices range from £210,000 to £430,000 (01634 776979; berkeleygroup.co.uk).
Jonathan Cashford, 66, rented a flat in the first phase of the development five years ago and within two months had put a deposit down on a two-bedroom apartment in the second phase, where he now lives.
“The views are fantastic, all I can see is the river and marina, you can’t beat it,” he says.
“The sunrises are stunning, they get me out of bed every morning.” Just outside Hythe, near Folkestone, there is another long-term development, Martello Lakes, with New England-style two and three-bedroom homes from £204,995 to £264,995 (0844 854 9936; barratthomes.co.uk).
An extension of the high speed rail link in Kent is expected to reduce the current 90-minute rail journey to London but new residents Natalie and Drew Greenall, both 31, bought their three-bedroom semi-detached house on the site because they wanted a new-build home.
“It has been lovely that nothing needs repairing or bringing up to standard,” says Natalie.

“Also, Millwood let us choose some of the interior features in our home including the worktops and flooring for the kitchen and bathrooms.”
Bexhill has a new luxury development of three, four and five-bedroom houses at Rosewood Park on the edge of farmland.
This first phase of the project has four and five bedroom houses for sale from £417,995 to £504,995 (0844 501 0768; dwh.co.uk) but it will also have three-bedroom houses and flats.
It’s an exciting time if you want to live near the coast in Kent and East Sussex as these outdated kiss-me-quick seaside towns finally emerge from economic doldrums and reinvent themselves as cultural beacons.
Enlarge / Do many gamers even recognize this as one of gaming’s most prestigious awards?
LAS VEGAS—Every year, when I tell people I’m going to Las Vegas in February for video gaming’s version of the academy awards, the response is usually the same: “I didn’t even know video games had an academy awards.”
Yes, those who follow the industry closely might have read the list of winners at Thursday night’s 21st annual DICE Awards (where Nintendo generally—and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild specifically—cleaned up). A few thousand really dedicated fans even watched the livestream on IGN.
But gaming’s own academy awards can’t even come close to the attention and cachet of major industry happenings like the Oscars, the Emmys, or the Grammys. Video gaming’s most “official” award show struggles to even get the same kind of attention as The Game Awards, a bombastic, marketing announcement-fueled spectacle that grew out of an embarrassing Spike TV telecast.

Ukrainian right-wing extremists have burst into the building of the Russian international cultural agency in Kiev. The radicals burnt a Russian flag and wreaked havoc in the facility at a time when “children were there.”
The intruders also vandalized an exhibition dedicated to the famous Russian opera singer, Feodor Chaliapin, Rossotrudnichestvo – the cultural agency in question – said in a statement. It also added that the incident happened when “more than 60 children” were present inside the building.
Several dozen ultranationalists stormed the gates of the facility and made their way into the building, a video posted by the radicals on Facebook shows. Members of the neo-Nazi C14 and Pravy Sector (the Right Sector) groups took part in the action, the radicals said.
The radicals took a flag from the facility and trampled on it before taking the banner to the street and burning it, another video and photos posted by the C14 group show. They also spray-painted slogans such as “Death to Russia!” and “Get out!” on the walls inside the building.
The Rossotrudnichestvo officials immediately filed a complaint with the police. However, the officers that eventually arrived at the scene found “no material damage” resulting from the actions of the radicals, the Interfax news agency reports, adding that no one was detained following the act of vandalism.
The Russian officials also demanded that Kiev authorities ensure the center’s security in accordance with the bilateral agreement signed by Russia and Ukraine back in 1998. In the meantime, the Russian Senator Konstantin Kosachev said that the Kiev government is particularly to blame for the incident.
“It is Kiev that bears prime responsibility for this stunt,” the head of the Russian Senate’s International Affairs Committee said in a Facebook post. “It is the atmosphere of hysteria around the non-existent Russian aggression created by [the Ukrainian government] that encourages these thugs, who perform their “feats” not only with impunity but also with covert encouragement,” he added.
The incident came just a day after another group of C14 radicals vandalized a monument to the Soviet soldiers, who fought against the Nazis in the WWII. The extremists destroyed the inscription, which said: “To those who defeated Nazism.”
The C14 was founded back in 2010 and has close ties to the nationalist ‘Svoboda’ (‘Freedom’) Party. A US-based Terrorism Research & Analysis Consortium (TRAC) has designated it as a paramilitary group that embraces an ideology of “racism” as well as “urban terrorism.”
It is not the first time the Ukrainian radicals attack the office of the Rossotrudnichestvo in Kiev. In April 2017, dozens of radicals blocked the entrance to the building of the Russian cultural institution to prevent the locals from attending a public Russian-language dictation that it was hosting. At that time, the agency had to cancel the event.
The Ukrainian authorities also seem to be biased against the agency. In August 2017, a summer trip to Moscow and St. Petersburg by a group of schoolchildren from Kiev, organized by the Rossotrudnichestvo, prompted the Ukrainian Education Ministry and the Security Service (SBU) to launch a probe into the matter.
