Although we make every effort to cover our own travel costs, in this case BMW flew me to Palm Springs, California, and provided two nights in a hotel in Indian Wells.

Now that SUVs have overtaken sedans as a percentage of all new car sales in the United States, it’s no surprise that ultra-luxury carmakers have jumped on the bandwagon. People accustomed to spending something well north of $ 200,000 on cars now have options like the Lamborghini Urus, Bentley Bentayga, and Range Rover SV Coupe. So when presented with an unexpected opportunity to take a Rolls-Royce Cullinan for a spin down desert highways and an off-road course, I leapt at the chance. Especially the off-road bits—one of the most frequent comments in luxury SUV reviews is “no one is ever going to take that off-road.”

That may very well be true for the Cullinan, which debuted in late 2018. But if the road to one of your winter chalets—say, the one in the Sierra Nevadas—is blocked by a mudslide or avalanche, you’ll still have a shot of making it home in time for cocktails if you’re behind the wheel (or in the backseat) of this elegant beast. Before we get into the ups and downs of driving a Cullinan, let’s look at the numbers.

Rolls-Royce, in a bid to keep anticipation for its upcoming Cullinan simmering, has chosen to show the rig’s tailgate seats. It’s an odd feature to highlight from the first-ever Rolls-Royce SUV, but just look at those perches! They deploy on their own from the Cullinan’s cargo area—the Cull’ has yet to debut, hence why it’s darkened out of the photo—and appear to be the perfect place from which to watch income disparity grow.

Shaped vaguely like a pair of ye olde Apple iBook laptops, the seats make up what Rolls-Royce calls the “Cullinan Viewing Suite.” A small table rests between them, and of course fine leather covers their shells. Suggested uses include taking in “the world’s most breathtaking vistas” or, for when owners feel like mingling amongst the normals, “a sports event.” Polo, perhaps?

While the idea of built-in lawn chairs seems novel, other fancy-schmancy SUVs such as the Bentley Bentayga and Land Rover’s top-flight Range Rover already offer the feature. But we suspect none of those can match Rolls-Royce’s ability to make everyone at your destination question their life choices.

Rolls Royce is set to release the , its first ever SUV, in 2018. 

Hot on the heels of the launch, the luxury car manufacturer looks to bring another new car to market next year. 

It is the first time the manufacturer is foraying into the SUV market. 

Rolls Royce, however, are unaccepting of the term SUV and prefer it to be described as a “high-sided vehicle”.

A number of spy shots have been captured of the new car as it is being tested on the roads. 

Now a rendering artist has given motorists their best look at the new Cullinan yet. 

Based on a spy shot captured of the car, artist Jan Peisert has filled in the blanks of the camouflage with elements of the new Phantom. 

While the final design may differ slightly when the final model is revealed it does give you the best look of the car so far. 

It retains the boxy and dominant design of Rolls Royces that have largely retained the same face for decades. 

When it goes on sale it will look to challenge the Bentley Bentayga at the top-end of the luxury SUV market. 

In the words of Rolls Royce, the Project Cullinan will be a “true Rolls Royce” and will be an “all-terrain high-sided vehicle”.

It will be built on its own platform which will then be used to create other Rolls Royce models from 2018. 

Cullinan will likely be powered by a version of the Phantom’s 6.8-litre V12 engine. 

It is rumoured to debut at the Geneva Motor Show 2018, although this has not been officially confirmed.

Few brands ooze luxury like Rolls-Royce. Like Rolex, the name Rolls-Royce conjures up an image of opulence and a certain level of refinement. Just look at all the details on the new 2018 Rolls-Royce Phantom. This hard-earned reputation is well-deserved. Still, there’s an SUV-sized gap in the automaker’s lineup. Crossovers are selling like mad and are easy money for any automaker. Fellow ultra-lux automaker Bentley has already thrown its hat into the ring with the Bentayga. Rolls-Royce’s entrant, the Cullinan, looks to be nearly ready for production.

We’ve seen plenty of spy photos of the Cullinan, with each batch revealing more and more. Hell, Rolls-Royce itself anticipated these leaks and released a couple of highly camouflaged official photos. These new photos show off the A- and B-pillars as well as part of the roof. It’s not much, but it is more than we’ve seen until now. The rear end also looks to be much further along in development than before. This is our first look at what appears to be production-spec rectangular taillights.

The Cullinan will share a platform with the Phantom, so expect plenty of shared parts. That means the Cullinan will likely get Rolls-Royce’s 6.75-liter twin-turbo V12 and eight-speed automatic. The 563 horsepower would be down compared to the Bentley Bentayga, but no one buys a Rolls-Royce for pure performance. A hybrid powertrain taken from the BMW 7 Series is also likely. Look for the wraps to come off the Cullinan sometime in the next few months.

It’s far larger in person than it appears to be in photos. It rivals the Ford F-150 in overall length and width, and remember this is a sedan. If the same characteristic holds true for the upcoming Rolls Royce Cullinan SUV, as these new spy photos show, this is going to be a luxury apartment on wheels.

We’ve seen photos of the Cullinan before, and this one doesn’t appear to be too far removed from that model. The brick-like shape remains, as do all the typical Rolls Royce touches like the upright grille and suicide doors. Out back, we can see rectangular exhaust tips and a low-opening tailgate. The prototype taillights appear to flow into the tailgate. The overall style is all about clean lines and as creating as few curves as possible. It’s probably going to be described as handsome far more than it will be described as pretty.

It should be no surprise that the Cullinan is as big as it its. It’s supposed to share a platform with the upcoming Phantom replacement. Expect all wheel drive and a turbocharged V12, though a plug-in hybrid variant is rumored to be in the works. Expect lots of aluminum to try and keep the weight down. The prototype looks pretty far along, so look for the final version sometime within the next year or so.
