Andrew Eames

September 11, 2018

The daily sailings of the Calmac ferry around Muck, Eigg, Rum and Canna in Scotland’s Inner Hebrides amount to one of the best-value cruises in the northern hemisphere. Andrew Eames goes exploring—for $ 20.

It isn’t the usual cruise ship crowd. There are walking parties with dogs. Council workers in overalls. Twitchers—bird spotters—with tripods and chunky zoom lenses. A couple of gamekeepers, looking slightly out of place in their heavy waterproofs. And a bus party of tourists from Scotland’s east coast. All getting on the same boat.

No, I say to myself, it isn’t the usual cruise ship crowd, but then nor would you find the port of Mallaig, on Scotland’s west coast, on a map of cruise ship terminals. On one side of the quay are colorful trawlers and scallop dredgers filling their holds with ice, ready to put to sea, while over at the back, I can see the rail terminus of the West Highland Line, where the steam-hauled Jacobite, which has played the part of the Hogwarts Express in the Harry Potter movies, will be arriving.

More than 20 years ago when I last traveled out to Rum (which used to have a reputation as something of a forbidden place) it was in a mailboat that stood off in deeper water—so passengers intending to land had to clamber into a smaller flit boat to go ashore. Now, thanks to new terminals, Calmac’s MV Loch Nevis berths at as many as four islands in a day and can carry 14 cars—and by retracing its outward journey on the way back, makes a huge difference to communities living on the edge. It also means that visitors can do day trips to individual islands, or simply stay onboard all the way round, turning the whole thing into a mini cruise, for a day-trip fare of just £12.

That morning we leave Mallaig at a civilized 10.15am, in immaculate conditions. The islands are basking in steep fingers of sunlight, the sea is millpond smooth, and there’s an air of subdued excitement. The twitchers are talking eagerly about the sea eagle project on Rum, which now has a fancy bunkhouse and no longer discourages visitors. The council workers are already tucking into a plate of chips in the on-board restaurant, and the bus party are bagging seats in the wind-sheltered parts of the deck.

After skirting Eigg’s seal-rich skerries (small, rocky islands) for another hour or so, the boat’s movement becomes more pronounced as we cross to Rum (population 20), broadsiding a gentle Atlantic swell. As we berth in the sheltered surroundings of Loch Scresort, I say farewell to the teacher and head ashore myself, along with the gamekeepers and the twitchers.

Back in the late 19th and early 20th century, this island was the plaything of a wealthy industrialist, George Bullough, who built a castellated hunting lodge here, kept alligators in the garden, and invited his friends for salacious house parties. More recently, its reputation for being off-limits to ordinary mortals was perpetuated by a major deer study, with only rangers allowed. These days, with a new bunkhouse and campsite, information office and shop, all that has changed.

The ferry is taking my new friend, the teacher, onward to Canna, but it will be back in two and a half hours to pick me up. That gives me more than enough time for a tour of Kinloch Castle, Bullough’s hunting lodge, led by Ross, an island resident with a strong Glaswegian accent and a fund of fabulous stories of the sort that you’d never get in a prim-and-proper country-house tour.

He shows us the under-the-stairs orchestrion—a mechanical orchestra—and the ballroom where the parties-with-prostitutes took place, and tells us how Bullough insisted all his castle builders wear kilts, despite the fact that the midges were terrible. Ross also reveals that Kinloch was only the second place in Scotland to have what he calls ‘tressie’, a word that has most of the group looking at each other perplexed, until someone whispers at the back: “Ah, electricity, of course!”

Cargo cruising deep into Canada’s French First Nations territory https://briefnews.eu/cargo-cruising-deep-into-canadas-french-first-nations-territory/ https://briefnews.eu/cargo-cruising-deep-into-canadas-french-first-nations-territory/#respond Fri, 31 Aug 2018 03:09:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/cargo-cruising-deep-into-canadas-french-first-nations-territory/
Tim Johnson

Tim Johnson

August 30, 2018

The best way to navigate Canada’s mighty St. Lawrence river? By cargo ship, of course—Tim Johnson traces a shipping route that delivers essential goods to remote First Nations and Québécois Canadians.

At this point, here on the south shore, it seems a little ridiculous to call the St. Lawrence a river.

One of Canada’s great waterways—the one that links the Great Lakes with the North Atlantic and brought European explorers like Jacques Cartier and Samuel de Champlain deep into the heart of this part of the New World—it cleaves a massive divide into two provinces on the eastern end of the country. And when the mighty St. Lawrence reaches Rimouski, in Quebec’s Bas-Saint-Laurent region, you can scarcely see across it.

Sailing east from here, it only gets bigger, and wider, and stronger, eventually emptying into a gulf of the same name. But across on the north shore, the population thins out, just a string of small villages separated by forest and bush so complete it could swallow you whole. Living in relative isolation, each one of these communities occupies its own little world.

And then the road ends. “After that, you need to travel by snowmobile, plane, or this vessel,” says Francis Roy, president of Relais Nordik, the company that owns and operates the MV Bella Desgagnes as he gives me a tour of the relatively small ship. “And then you’ll really feel the difference. French, English and First nations—the Lower North Shore is a mixture of cultures.”

RELATED: Road tripping Canada’s surf highway

Boarding in Rimouski, I’m about to sail northeast, a 2,200-kilometer round-trip, for a week on the Bella. A workhorse of a vessel, the 97-meter ship can carry almost 400 guests, both in passenger decks lined with airline-style seats and 63 private cabins, sailing to the edge of the Far North, ferrying both vacationers to Canada’s maritime provinces and locals between remote communities.

Many of the latter belong to Quebec’s First Nations; tiny, isolated spots rich in history and culture. I’m here to sail to the Labrador border (and back), connecting with indigenous and Québécois Canadians, seeing the diversity in their communities—and along the way becoming more than slightly obsessed with the cargo.

As we proceed east toward the Gulf of St. Lawrence, the coastline fleeing from sight on both sides, we see corners of the country rarely spotted by even adventurous Québécois. I settle into my functional cabin, sleeping well on the waves, occasionally awakened in the middle of the night by the slight movement of the ship. There’s no casino or swimming pool, so I content myself with conversation, up on the top decks or while eating meals with other guests in the dining room.

RELATED: The resurgence of Canada’s First Nations cuisine

And at each stop, I disembark and take a tour, unpolished little excursions organized for a minimal fee by local residents to give us something to do while they unload and load the cargo.

It’s always clear that the guides are proud of their towns (and their resilience). On 222-kilometer-long Anticosti Island, I spot wild deer wandering right through the heart of the main (and only) village, Port-Menier, and learn that while 216 residents live here, the island is home to more than 200,000 deer.

In one such village, La Romaine, we board a short yellow school bus, defying the foul weather that has closed in, oppressive clouds and heavy rain. Bumping along, we learn some of the darker chapters in the history of the area. As we pass the local Catholic church with its knotty-line altar, our guide tells us how, for decades, local kids were separated from their families and forced to attend ’residential schools’ where abuse was common and children were barred from speaking their own language or going home.

Later, at Saint-Augustin, a brief stop without a tour, I walk up an incline to a tipi set up within view of the ship, and push through the language barrier to speak with an Innu man. The Innu, or Montagnais, are the Indigenous people from this part of Quebec, which they know as Nitassinan (‘our land’), and the man has set up in that spot with his family to help share his culture with visitors. He shows a small group of us a few traditional tricks, including how to cook a meal over a fire, before we need to chase the setting sun back to the Bella before she casts off again.

We reach the road again at Blanc-Sablon, population 1,200, and the terminus of our journey. Meaning ‘white sand’, the shores here are lined with beaches and—despite its subarctic latitude—Caribbean-blue waters. A busy port-of-call over the years for whalers, sailors, and cod and lobster fishermen, archaeology has revealed settlement here for some 8,000 years, back to the Basque (sailors from the Basque, Spain, whaled and fished Newfoundland from 1525) and beyond.

Most of the holidaymakers on board disembark here, waiting on the shore for their SUVs and Subarus to be dropped down onto the dock by the crane. Most of them will drive out of the box and over to the next slip, boarding the big ferry and heading for Newfoundland, just across the Strait of Belle Isle.

But not me. I stand there, still in awe of all that cargo, watching the crane swing container after container back on board, ready to load up and head all the way back to Rimouski.

Cruising a Caracas YouTube Channel Between Life and Death https://briefnews.eu/cruising-a-caracas-youtube-channel-between-life-and-death/ https://briefnews.eu/cruising-a-caracas-youtube-channel-between-life-and-death/#respond Thu, 23 Aug 2018 07:10:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/cruising-a-caracas-youtube-channel-between-life-and-death/ Teresita Gil loves laughing, writing, traveling and learning about other cultures. The 21-year-old could be the sweet-voiced girl next door if it weren’t for the fact that Venezuela, her home country, is going through one of the most severe economic and humanitarian crises in the world.

Gil decided to resist in the best way she knew how …

In its Contingency Planning Memorandum the Council on Foreign Relations stated, “Basic food and medicines for Venezuela’s approximately 30 million citizens are increasingly scarce, and the devastation of the health care system has spurred outbreaks of treatable diseases and rising death rates.” While some are already talking about a Venezuelan refugee crisis, it’s fairly clear: The oil-rich land has been turned upside down.

But Gil decided to resist in the best way she knew how. Leveraging her internet savvy and her charisma, she created a YouTube channel, “Turista en Caracas,” where she promotes tourism in Caracas. There, she visits the remains of what used to be a promising Caribbean paradise and shows the beautiful and sunny side of the city.

Gil came up with the idea almost two years ago as a way to monetize the videos and gain some dollars to pay for her multiple sclerosis treatments. Due to Venezuela’s crisis, her medication has to be imported and costs at least $ 600 per month.

There are more than 3,000 patients with MS in Venezuela. Fortunately, Gil is one of them, and one with a solution.

Cruise news: Cruising holidays boom with record figures in 2017 https://briefnews.eu/cruise-news-cruising-holidays-boom-with-record-figures-in-2017/ https://briefnews.eu/cruise-news-cruising-holidays-boom-with-record-figures-in-2017/#respond Mon, 12 Mar 2018 18:41:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/cruise-news-cruising-holidays-boom-with-record-figures-in-2017/

Cruising is a holiday choice that has grown in popularity in recent years with everything from entertainment to leisure onboard.

According to the annual UK & Ireland cruise industry report, almost two million cruises were taken by British Holidaymakers in 2017.

This is a record high of 1,959,000 cruise passengers, a figure published by the industry body, Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA)

This figure sees the causing population to have risen by 0.5 per cent since 2016.

Attracted to the warm climate and crystal clear water, the report highlights the Mediterranean the most popular destination amongst British tourists.

The Med represents 37 per cent of all cruise holidays booked by Britons, although this number is falling.

Surprisingly northern Europe is on the rise, as eight per cent of UK holidaymakers are choosing to cruise in Europe in comparison to 2016.

This makes northern Europe the second most popular causing destination, even beating the Caribbean and is popular amongst the youngest of cruisers – those aged 52-years old.

The Caribbean lands itself in third spot although the report shows that this too, is on the rise.

This also included the Bahamas and Bermuda, two popular destinations.

But it’s not just the most popular destinations that the report highlights.

Cruise goers are expecting more and more from their cruise with unusual itineraries increasing in popularity, especially those aimed at adventure-style explores in the Antarctic, Arctic, and Galapagos which are up by three per cent.

In a comment from senior vice-president and director of CLIA UK & Ireland, Andy Harmer commented: “In a step away from the traditional image of sunshine-soaked decks, we are seeing an increase in popularity of colder-climate destinations including Canada, Alaska, and Antarctica.

Thanks to the array of unique excursion options in these regions, from penguin-watching to ice fishing, these destinations are drawing in both new and repeat cruise travellers.”

Cruisers are also branching out into long-haul destinations, as last year saw a boom in holidaymakers venturing to Africa and the Middle East, these have risen by almost 25 per cent against the 2016 figures.

Asia and China are also up by 22 per cent and South America and the Panama Canal rose by nearly 25 per cent.

But it’s not just far-flung corners of the globe that is attracting cruisers, recent figures from CruiseBritain reveal that the number of passengers setting sail in the UK increased to 1.1million in 2017.

Cruising the Las Vegas Strip in the Smart Vision EQ concept car https://briefnews.eu/cruising-the-las-vegas-strip-in-the-smart-vision-eq-concept-car/ https://briefnews.eu/cruising-the-las-vegas-strip-in-the-smart-vision-eq-concept-car/#respond Fri, 12 Jan 2018 16:34:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/cruising-the-las-vegas-strip-in-the-smart-vision-eq-concept-car/

Introduced at the Frankfurt auto show in September, the Smart Vision EQ from Mercedes-Benz is the automaker’s EV concept that combines mobility, autonomy and connectivity. The result is a car built on the Smart Fortwo platform, can wink at pedestrians, has level-five autonomy (no steering wheel or pedals), and welcomes passengers by name. It also took me for a short ride on the Las Vegas Strip.

Mercedes says the concept vehicle isn’t made to be sold to individuals and would instead be part of an autonomous ride-sharing fleet. The way Mercedes envisions a car like this would work is that it would arrive at a location and display the name of the individual that hailed the ride on the front of the car. They would enter the vehicle, and the dash would show their name, photo and other information they shared with the car-share service.

Then the electrical vehicle would cruise autonomously around and eventually drop you at your location and bid you farewell. One interesting feature is that the car is outfitted with hand-sanitizer dispensers, so as the passenger departs, they can clean their hands after being in a car that’s been on the road all day with various people getting in and out.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

My ride in the car was a bit less personalized. Mercedes did update the front display with the Las Vegas Strip, but it was set to the default demo passenger. No biggie, the point of the short drive (about 500 meters done twice) was to experience the sensation of being in a level-five car that could be the blueprint of a future Mercedes.

Even though the two passes I took in the car lasted about five minutes, and the car was controlled by a Mercedes technician via a remote, it was a good indicator of how it would feel to sit in a car you’ve hailed without a human behind the wheel. If this service were available now (and was safe), I would use it all the time. Parking in San Francisco is challenging even on the best of days, and I like the idea of a car that winks at people as it drives down the road. I’m guessing that other folks tired of traffic and spending 20 minutes looking for parking would too.

Cruising Woodward in a Dodge Charger Hellcat | AutoblogVR https://briefnews.eu/cruising-woodward-in-a-dodge-charger-hellcat-autoblogvr/ https://briefnews.eu/cruising-woodward-in-a-dodge-charger-hellcat-autoblogvr/#respond Tue, 06 Jun 2017 16:29:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/cruising-woodward-in-a-dodge-charger-hellcat-autoblogvr/ If you love cars, you’ve probably at least heard of the Woodward Dream Cruise. Millions of people make the pilgrimage to Woodward Avenue with thousands of cars every year. Obviously the Dream Cruise is amazing, but you don’t need to wait for the official Cruise to experience Woodward. In this episode of AutoblogVR, join Greg Migliore as he drives up and down the street of Dreams in a Dodge Charger Hellcat.

Greg starts the drive by talking about how epic his chariot is. The Dodge Charger Hellcat has a 0-60 time of 3.7 seconds and a price tag of only $ 65,945. Of course the Hellcat’s true power couldn’t be unleashed driving along the historic road, but that didn’t dampen Greg’s spirits. After all, driving on one of the first patches of paved road in America is a pretty great experience no matter how fast you’re going.

After giving a bit of a history lesson and explaining the significance of Woodward to the Hellcat specifically, we get to one of the best ways to experience Woodward – tracking down some of the best food! Greg pops in to his favorite pub and gives us a tour, but one pub is just the tip of the iceberg. With all of the culture along the 27-mile span, this road is a must-drive for any car enthusiast. But if you can’t make it out, experiencing it in 360° VR is the next best thing.

Each month, new episodes will launch on the AutoblogVR App. We’ll be posting them here on Autoblog, but for the best experience, head over to the app, which you can download for free from the App store and Google Play. Be sure to try it with a cardboard viewer, too!

Cruising with Jane McDonald: Former ship singer returns to her roots for Channel 5 https://briefnews.eu/cruising-with-jane-mcdonald-former-ship-singer-returns-to-her-roots-for-channel-5/ https://briefnews.eu/cruising-with-jane-mcdonald-former-ship-singer-returns-to-her-roots-for-channel-5/#respond Fri, 10 Feb 2017 19:07:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/cruising-with-jane-mcdonald-former-ship-singer-returns-to-her-roots-for-channel-5/

Starting tonight, the first episode of the four-part series will explore a 4,345-passenger MSC Divina on a seven-night Caribbean cruise.

Viewers will get a sneak peak behind the scenes of the ship, owned by MSC Cruises, as it sails from Miami, with veteran Jane as their guide.

Jane, who hasn’t set foot on a ship for 18 years, found fame on a reality show based on the cruise ship she entertained on.

The presenter will also step onboard a mini-cruise to the Inner Hebrides and the Isle of Mull, a cruise on Hungary’s Danube and an Alaskan cruise.

Recently on Loose Women Jane made a filthy joke about being “taken up the Danube” on the panel show.

She described the cruising experience in an innuendo laced conversation with Colleen Nolan.

“It’s the motion of the ocean,” she said, as Colleen burst out laughing.

She also promoted her latest album Hold The Covers Back.

Jane revealed she was left fearing for her life after a crazed fan hand delivered a death threat to her.

The 53-year-old singer was reportedly escorted from her show in Watford by police after she was given the horrifying letter last Saturday.

Jane is believed to have cancelled all upcoming meet and greets after the incident, which happened during her performance at Watford Colosseum.

After personally handing the terrifying note to the star, the man reportedly identified himself before being thrown out of the venue.

Jane showed off her slimmed down physique when appearing on Lorraine in August.

The former Loose Women panellist chatted to Gaby Roslin – who is filling in for Lorraine – on the ITV talk show and she spoke out about her weight loss, admitting that she’s got a new burst of energy after appearing on reality TV show Sugar Free Farm earlier this year.

Jane definitely dressed to impress for the appearance, with her showing off her trim waistline in a pair of smart black trousers, which she teamed with a matching jacket and purple top.

She wore her brunette locks in loose waves and added a slick of pink lipgloss to complete the look.
