New York City Mayor Eric Adams speaks at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Jackie Robinson Museum, Tuesday, June 26, 2022, in New York.

  • NYC Mayor Adams decried the migrant "humanitarian crisis" that has brought over 11,000 migrants to the city.
  • Texas Gov. Abbott has bused about 2,500 migrants to NYC in a political stunt criticizing immigration laws.
  • Adams said the city may use cruise ships to house migrants as the system is "nearing its breaking point."

New York City Mayor Eric Adams criticized the bussing of migrants as a "humanitarian crisis made by human hands" as the city looks for alternate ways to house the influx of asylum seekers from the southern border.

Republican leaders like Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott,  have flown and bused immigrants from the border to northern states as a political stunt. Since May, some 11,000 asylum seekers have entered New York's shelter system, including about 2,500 that were bused to the state from Texas, CNN reported.

"We should be clear that this is, as you stated, a humanitarian crisis created by human hands, and it is an all-hands-on-deck moment where we're all supposed to come together and coordinate," Adams told Jake Tapper on CNN's "State of the Union" on Sunday.

Adams has said the city shelter system is "nearing its breaking point" in its capacity and has begun to consider using cruise ships to house migrants.

"We're examining everything, from the legality of using any type of cruise ship for temporary housing. We're looking at everything to see how do we deal with this," Adams told CBS News last week.

On CNN on Sunday, Adams said it is an "all-hands-on-deck moment" and called on the federal government and Governors DeSantis and Abbott to "come together and coordinate."

"We should not be really treating other cities and municipalities in the manner that we're witnessing now," Adams said. "It is time for us to coordinate this humanitarian crisis that our country is facing."

Adams added that his office has tried to reach out to Gov. Abbott, but that his office has refused "to do any form of coordination."

Despite the concerns about capacity, Adams maintained "this is a right-to-shelter city, and we're going to fulfill our obligations." New York's right-to-shelter laws make it the only city in the country where asylum must be given to anyone who asks for it, per The New York Times. Last week, the Times reported that Adams suggested the system's "prior practices…must be reassessed," an idea that was swiftly dismissed by local state lawmakers.

On CNN, Adams said he is not considering changing the law.

"We're not considering and we don't believe we should change the right-to-shelter law. What needs to be looked at is the actual practices, because I'm sure, 40 years ago, when this law was put into place, no one thought that we would receive over 11,000 migrants or asylum seekers," Adams said.

Royal Caribbean reveal ‘once in a lifetime’ cruise job with HUGE salary – what is it? https://briefnews.eu/royal-caribbean-reveal-once-in-a-lifetime-cruise-job-with-huge-salary-what-is-it/ https://briefnews.eu/royal-caribbean-reveal-once-in-a-lifetime-cruise-job-with-huge-salary-what-is-it/#respond Mon, 04 Feb 2019 02:00:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/royal-caribbean-reveal-once-in-a-lifetime-cruise-job-with-huge-salary-what-is-it/

One lucky cruise line passenger will be paid the equivalent of a £100,000 salary thanks to Royal Caribbean and the brand’s jaw-dropping, first ever Shore Explorer Apprentice-ship. The appropriately titled job role, which is sure to be coveted among many travel fans, offers the enviable task of sailing on one of the firm’s luxurious ships to a host of destinations across the globe. The lucky employee will be paid a hefty fee for the privilege, and in return need to seek out and then test what they deem extraordinary shore experiences. These include visiting a glacier in Alaska, exploring Osaka in Japan and white water rafting in the Norwegian Fjords, documenting their experiences on Royal Caribbean’s Instagram, Insta-Stories and IGTV pages.

As if the perks of this particular role weren’t extensive and impressive enough, the lucky apprentice will also get the first glimpse at Royal Caribbean’s new and exclusive private island in the Caribbean, Perfect Day at CocoCay, set to open in May 2019.

Those wanting to apply for the one-off role need to apply via the cruise line’s Instagram page.

They will need to share their favourite ever travel experience in a picture or video on Instagram, Insta-Stories or IGTV tagging #ShoreExplorer and @RoyalCaribbeanUK

It will then be judged by an independent panel of judges, who include The Vamps’ writer & guitarist and contestant in I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! 2018, James McVey.

A Royal Caribbean spokesperson said: “We’re looking for an adrenaline junkie who is not only hungry for adventure, but also has a unique ability to capture a moment and tell a story in a simple social media post.

“We already offer a huge amount of incredible, once-in-a-lifetime, on-land experiences as part of our cruise holidays – from zip wires and white water rafting, to walking on glaciers and hot air balloon rides.

“By launching this position, we’re hoping that the winning candidate will take our shore excursion programme to the next level.”

Meanwhile, on becoming a Shore Explorer judge, James McVey said: “My jungle experience taught me that you really can’t beat the thrill of exploring new destinations and experiences – whether on land or sea – and that’s what becoming a Shore Explorer is all about.

“I’m so excited to be working with Royal Caribbean to find the perfect person for this new Apprentice-ship; someone who has a passion for travel, exploration and seeking out new and extraordinary experiences around the world.

“And, of course, they have to be brilliant at sharing their adventure online too!”

Applicants must be 21 years or over, hold a valid passport and be able to travel this year.

Royal Caribbean also conducted a survey tied with its debut Shore Explorer Apprentice-Ship, which centred on bucket list travel wishes.

The findings showed more than half (51 per cent) of millennials claim that they would rather spend their money on memorable experiences over material possessions.

Meanwhile, almost a third (28 per cent) of this age group have even booked a holiday or experience after seeing someone posting about it on Instagram.

Top of the destination wish list was a trip to see the Northern Lights.

Cruise secrets: Royal Caribbean Genies took serious action to swerve health danger – how? https://briefnews.eu/cruise-secrets-royal-caribbean-genies-took-serious-action-to-swerve-health-danger-how/ https://briefnews.eu/cruise-secrets-royal-caribbean-genies-took-serious-action-to-swerve-health-danger-how/#respond Sun, 03 Feb 2019 21:46:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/cruise-secrets-royal-caribbean-genies-took-serious-action-to-swerve-health-danger-how/

Royal Caribbean’s loyal team of on-board Royal Genies, quite literally, make dreams come true. Whether that’s one-of-a-kind adventures, a tailor-made spa experience or an on-shore adventure to remember forever, the magical crew bend over backwards to ensure even the biggest wish is granted. Yet the oldest, most experienced Genie for the cruise line has let slip his fairytale role doesn’t come without its issues. Reyno Varkevisser, Royal Genies on Symphony of the Seas, spoke exclusively to Express.co.uk about creating personalised VIP experiences in and out of the cabin.

Talking of his trickiest moment yet, he confessed borders were crossed to make his customers happy.

Reyno said: “I once had a family with four children who each had several completely different allergies, so we had to source products for them from their home country, as well as they countries we visited.

“It was an operation of epic proportion, but we knew it meant the world to these Star Class guests for their children to not to be restricted by their allergies and to have the confidence that their children would be well looked after.

“Fortunately, on the world’s largest ship we have some of the world’s most knowledgeable crew.

“The Inventory team in this case rose to the occasion and we made sure that the family all left very happy guests, having made incredible memories on their family holiday.”

His potentially life-saving duties saw a very happy holiday for the passengers.

Other duties fulfilled by the Genies include something as simple as making sure a customer’s bottle of wine is perfectly chilled for them in their cabin, or helping craft the ultimate date night.

The number one Genie added: “All Royal Genies undergo training, including an extensive course from the British Butler Institute, and as a result, we are always looking at attention to detail and the ways that we can enhance the holiday experience of guests, guiding them through a once-in-a-lifetime holiday.

“I treasure all of my ‘extended family’ and we are all often very sad to wave goodbye to each other at the end of the holiday, so many guests like to keep in touch and let me know when they are joining us on the ship again!

“What makes me stand out is I am the very first Royal Genie at RCI so that makes my Magic Lamp the oldest Royal Genie residence in the fleet.

“The aim was not to clone a team of Mr Carson’s from Downton Abbey, but rather to invest in a group of Royal Genies each with his or her own unique style to deliver an unforgettable holiday.

Meanwhile, Reyno told how it was releasing his inner big kid which he found most satisfying.

He said: “My most favourite requests to fulfil are for the children.

“If I am looking after the Ultimate Family suite, which is every child’s dream suite (and often adults’ dream too!), with an in-suite slide, a Lego wall, and several more incredible features, then I can have several family members to look after.

“I feel very lucky to have this suite as I can assist to make true magic happen and provide that family with even more incredible family memories.”

Virgin unveils adults-only cruise ship complete with free dining and tattoo parlour https://briefnews.eu/virgin-unveils-adults-only-cruise-ship-complete-with-free-dining-and-tattoo-parlour/ https://briefnews.eu/virgin-unveils-adults-only-cruise-ship-complete-with-free-dining-and-tattoo-parlour/#respond Thu, 24 Jan 2019 19:58:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/virgin-unveils-adults-only-cruise-ship-complete-with-free-dining-and-tattoo-parlour/

Virgin Voyages has given cruise fans a sneak peak into its new ship the Scarlet Lady, which will launch in the USA next year. The cruise ship has been described as “Adult by Design, a sanctuary at sea for the 18 plus traveller.” It will host 2,770 passengers – which it calls sailors – and will offer a mix of itineraries, including voyages to Cuba on select sailings. Virgin Voyages are aiming to give their passengers more value for money. Free fitness classes, free dining, free filtered water and all sodas are included in the voyage fare.

There will also be a series of RockStar suites which Virgin claims are “throwing out traditional clichés on luxury and formalities.”

Eighty-six per cent of Virgin Voyages cabins will feature a balcony and 93 per cent will feature an ocean view.

Highlights of the Massive Suite, the top suite aboard the Scarlet Lady, include its own guitar-clad music room, views of the ocean from every corner of the suite and a massive terrace, complete with its own Peek-a-View outdoor shower, hot tub, hammocks and a runway outdoor dining table.

“Virgin has always avoided stuffy formalities and brought a lot of excitement and a bit of rebelliousness to our customer experiences,” said Sir Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin Group.

“With these glamorous suites, Virgin Voyages is bringing rock and roll to the high seas and spoiling our Sailors like the rockstars they are.”

Tom McAlpin CEO of Virgin Voyages, added: “We have combined brilliant design and Virgin Voyages’ epic Sailor experience vision to create a completely new version of luxury – Rebellious Luxe, which is at the intersection of luxury and a rebellious attitude that makes everything we do different, indulgent and meaningfully relevant to our Sailors.

“Whether they want to sleep all day, praise the sun with yoga at dusk or party all night, our RockStar Suite Sailors can live out their fantasies aboard the Scarlet Lady.”

Well-being will be at the forefront of the onboard experience, activated through a mix of high-energy moments coupled with relaxation and rejuvenation.

There is an athletics club, running track, 360-degree ocean view yoga spot and a variety of fitness rooms.

Numerous restaurants can be found on board, offering every cuisine from steak and seafood to Mexican and pizza.

There is also a Korean restaurant which is “destined to be the loudest eatery on board, each meal will begin with a complimentary round of soju for the table and throughout the evening sailors are encouraged to take part lively Korean drinking games.”

Four lounges have currently been revealed – but more are to come, according to Virgin. One is inspired by New York sports clubs of the 1920’s; the space features oversized gaming for outdoor adult play, the largest daybed at sea, cabanas for relaxation, a sports bar for socialising post-workout and more.

On top of this, there are many grooming and pampering spaces, including an upscale barber shop, the first-ever tattoo studio on board a cruise ship and spa parties.

Virgin Voyages is committed to having one of the cleanest fleets at sea and has banned single-use plastics on board its ships.

Virgin has three more ships on order, due for delivery in 2021, 2022 and 2023.

In further cruise news, the Royal Caribbean’ Navigator of the Seas has revealed its incredible new on-board feature – the world’s longest waterslide at sea. The 800ft aqua-coaster is part of a $ 115milion makeover.

“Each Royal Caribbean ship brings a new adventure uniquely designed to deliver on our guests’ preferences from A to Z,” said Michael Bayley, President and CEO, Royal Caribbean International.

“Every detail matters and we’ve mapped out an unmatched combination of innovative features and experiences for this top-to-bottom transformation of Navigator of the Seas.”

Cruise ship secrets: Be wary of crew using THIS code word – it could mean there’s a fire https://briefnews.eu/cruise-ship-secrets-be-wary-of-crew-using-this-code-word-it-could-mean-theres-a-fire/ https://briefnews.eu/cruise-ship-secrets-be-wary-of-crew-using-this-code-word-it-could-mean-theres-a-fire/#respond Thu, 24 Jan 2019 11:29:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/cruise-ship-secrets-be-wary-of-crew-using-this-code-word-it-could-mean-theres-a-fire/

Cruise ships sail far and wide, from European destinations such as France and Germany to more exotic locations like the Caribbean. Cruises these days offer a host of luxuries, including onboard zip lining and water parks. But no matter how big or how opulent a cruise ship is, things can still go wrong. Brandon Presser served as a cruise director for a week, and during his time he picked a number of key codes crew members use onboard in emergencies, such as a fire.

He told Bloomberg in the event of a fire, the codeword they use is ‘Bravo’.

Other codewords used, using the NATO phonetic alphabet, are ‘Alpha’, used in a medical emergency, and ‘Kilo’, which is a request for all personnel to report to their emergency posts.

Presser said this can occur in the event of an evacuation.

He added: “It’s crucial for the staff to have code words so that passengers don’t get freaked out if something goes wrong.

“A ’30-30′ means the crew is asking maintenance to clean up a mess; three times during my stint I called in a ‘PVI’ (public vomiting incident).”

But the codewords to be most wary of are ’Echo’ and ‘Oscar’.

He said: “Be wary of ‘Echo’, which is called if the ship is starting to drift, or ‘Oscar’, which means someone’s gone overboard. A crew member told me he’s had only four or five ‘Oscars’ in 10 years of cruising.”

Another codeword which could be used by crew members on a ship is ‘Sierra’, which means ‘call for a stretcher’.

If someone dies on a cruise ship the announcement ‘Operation Bright Star’ is made, which alerts the crew to the death of a passenger.

Tina Molson, 52, from Cleethorpes, who worked in an onboard duty-free shop from 2002 to 2010, has explained that deaths aren’t that rare.

“Many of the older passengers go on cruise ships for months because it’s cheaper for them than living at home. Some even go to sea to die,” Tina told The Sun.

“There was often a death on board. On one ship we had a shop store room next to the freezer room where the bodies were stored. We called it the ‘coffin locker.’”

But cruises aren’t all doom and gloom – cruise ships were recently put under the spotlight by consumer watchdog Which? and a new firm has scooped the title ‘best cruise line’.

Viking Ocean Cruises UK was given the top spot with the survey of 20 companies.

The result was based on customer feedback, with a total of 25,000 people answering questions about cabin space, onboard facilities, WiFi service and overall value.

Viking received an average customer satisfaction of 88 per cent.

WATCH: Shocking moment man jumps from ‘110ft’ cruise ship balcony in dangerous stunt https://briefnews.eu/watch-shocking-moment-man-jumps-from-110ft-cruise-ship-balcony-in-dangerous-stunt-2/ https://briefnews.eu/watch-shocking-moment-man-jumps-from-110ft-cruise-ship-balcony-in-dangerous-stunt-2/#respond Fri, 18 Jan 2019 11:17:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/watch-shocking-moment-man-jumps-from-110ft-cruise-ship-balcony-in-dangerous-stunt-2/

Cruise ship line Royal Caribbean has banned a group of Canadian men from ever travelling with them again after one of them was filmed jumping off a balcony into the ocean. A video of the daredevil leap is rapidly going viral after it was posted to Instagram. Nick Naydev estimated he jumped from the eleventh floor of the 18-floor Symphony of the Seas, making it a leap of about ”110-120 feet.” Naydev did the perilous stunt while the cruise ship was docked in the Bahamas, USA.

“He’s jumped from those kinds of heights before, and we didn’t really care about the consequences with the cruise company,” Konstantin Kryachun, who filmed the clip, told Yahoo Lifestyle. “We just wanted to get a video of it and make it go viral.”

The Instagram video has accrued nearly 160,000 views. Naydev uploaded it to his account with the caption “Full send.”

It shows the group laughing as Naydev climbs onto the railing and leaping into the water. The moment of impact was not captured – the irony of which was not lost on viewers.

“I was still drunk from the previous night,” Naydev said on Instagram about the incident.

“When I woke up I just decided to jump. “My feet were actually fine. It was my neck and tailbone that hurt.”

Some viewers have criticised the man while others have been impressed. “You are SO STUPID. If people copy this and gets hurt, it’s all because of YOU!” one person wrote. Another commented: “Living legend.”

Naydev responded to one Instagram comment explaining he had been picked up from the water by a small boat.

In another post, he revealed how he felt afterwards: ”I could barely walk for 3 days because my ass hurt so bad,” he commented. “The flight home was a nightmare but I’m fine now.”

The act resulted in the ground being forbidden to sail with Royal Caribbean ever again, however.

A Royal Caribbean spokesperson told Express.co.uk: “This was stupid and reckless behaviour.

“He and his companions have been banned from ever sailing with us again. We are exploring legal action.”

‘Balconing’ has been a rising trend since 2010 and has resulted in a number of deaths of young British tourists on holiday.

The Foreign Office has issued a warning on the gov.uk website about the perils of the reckless stunt: “There have been a number of very serious accidents (some fatal) as a result of falls from balconies.

“Many of these incidents have involved British nationals and have had a devastating impact on those involved and their loved ones.

“Don’t take unnecessary risks around balconies, particularly if you’re under the influence of drink or drugs.

“Your travel insurance may not cover you for incidents that take place on a balcony or if you were under the influence of drink or drugs when it happened.”

Brexit news: Cruise passengers WILL be protected despite EU deal outcome after PM vote https://briefnews.eu/brexit-news-cruise-passengers-will-be-protected-despite-eu-deal-outcome-after-pm-vote/ https://briefnews.eu/brexit-news-cruise-passengers-will-be-protected-despite-eu-deal-outcome-after-pm-vote/#respond Tue, 15 Jan 2019 23:52:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/brexit-news-cruise-passengers-will-be-protected-despite-eu-deal-outcome-after-pm-vote/

The current political deliberations, widely centred on potential outcomes of a Brexit deal, no deal, and a vote of no confidence in the UK leader, will not impact passengers travelling on cruise liners, it has been confirmed. The messy negotiations on Tuesday, saw the Conservative leader’s Brexit divorce proposal shunned in what was the worst ever House of Commons defeat suffered by a head of Government. Mrs May’s suggestions received the backing of 230 members, yet 432 – including some in her own party – turned against her to vote down the proposal. The scale of the defeat sparked Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn to table a motion of no confidence in Mrs May’s Government.

Throughout the Brexit chaos, UK residents have been worried about the impact severing ties with the European Union will have on travel.

There have been suggestions airline fees will rise, queues at security will lengthen and holidaymakers will be offered poorer protection while overseas.

Yet apparently bucking the trend, Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) UK & Ireland has predicted a rise in the number of British cruise passengers in 2019, despite the uncertainty surrounding Brexit.

Meanwhile, both the British Government and Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) have also provided reassurances about travel arrangements taking place after 29 March 2019.

They have stated that, from 29 March, if there is a no-deal Brexit, cruise operations will continue as they are.

Cruise passengers departing from a UK port be protected by EU regulation on maritime passengers’ rights as it will be brought into UK law.

Regardless of the outcome of Brexit, aeroplanes will continue to fly between the UK and EU.

Andy Harmer, director of CLIA UK & Ireland, said: “We welcome this advice and hopes it reassures UK and EU citizens planning a cruise holiday.

“2019 is an exciting time for the cruise industry with 24 new ships being delivered for ocean and river cruise lines, and many existing ships being renovated and refurbished to a standard that rivals even the finest land-based hotels.

“Never before has there been so much choice for customers in terms of style of ship, itinerary and onboard experiences.”

He added: “The global fleet development, new destinations to explore, plus recent reassurances from authorities surrounding Brexit, put British travel agents in a great position to tempt their customers to choose cruise in 2019, whether it’s for the first time, or as repeat guests.”

In further positive news for the cruise sector, the number of cruises between January and September 2018 rose by 2.1 percent from 1.31million to 1.34million in 2018. Experts have insisted the sector is strong going into 2019.

Meanwhile, it remains to be seen what Brexit outcome will be reached by the UK Parliament as negotiations continue.

Leader of the Opposition, Jeremy Corbyn, has tabled a second vote of no confidence in Theresa May’s Government.

Cruise secrets: Why you should be worried if you hear THIS name used by staff https://briefnews.eu/cruise-secrets-why-you-should-be-worried-if-you-hear-this-name-used-by-staff/ https://briefnews.eu/cruise-secrets-why-you-should-be-worried-if-you-hear-this-name-used-by-staff/#respond Tue, 15 Jan 2019 02:40:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/cruise-secrets-why-you-should-be-worried-if-you-hear-this-name-used-by-staff/

Cruise ship staff are tasked with the smooth running of everything on-board the vessel, from meal times and social activities to allocating cabins and making sure guests can enjoy a jam-packed excursion list. They are often working in teams together for weeks on end, as the boat moors up at a number of jaw-dropping destinations. This means they develop a very close relationship with customers, and with each other. During their downtime, a cruise ship employee has revealed the secret language they use to communicate, especially during times of stress and disturbance, when a code language may be needed to prevent passenger alarm.

Staff on Royal Carribean Cruise’s Harmony of the Seas have told how the language can prove essential in an emergency.

Druy Pavlov, veteran cruise director, has told how the phrase “Oscar” could be a doomed name if uttered by employees.

He told how it means “someone’s gone overboard”, therefore an emergency for the crew to tackle.

Meanwhile, the phrase “Echo” also has negative connotations, as it means the liner is starting to drift off course.

“Alpha” is used in a medical emergency, such as the recent norovirus outbreak on Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas.

A PVI is classed as a more self-explanatory Public Vomiting Incident.

A crew member then added how they had only experienced five “Oscar” usages in 10 years.

Meanwhile, Travel expert Brandon Presser has revealed to Bloomberg that if you hear the word “kilo” said by staff – an emergency is underway.

The codeword “kilo” signifies that all personnel need to report to their emergency posts. Once in their posts, the staff are instructed by designated cruise workers how to proceed.

Another alarm is then sounded to alert passengers to an emergency. They then need to head to specified areas of the ship where the staff will tell them what to do.

“Onboard a cruise ship there is a mandatory muster of passengers before the ship leaves port, during which each passenger is pre-assigned to a specific lifeboat or muster station based on the location of their accommodations,” a spokeswoman for the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) told Express.co.uk.

“This is to ensure that every single passenger is briefed on emergency drills and where they need to go on hearing the ship’s alarm signal.”

On some cruise ships, instead of using code words in such emergencies, a series of horn blasts will be heard, a spokesperson for MSC cruises told Express.co.uk.

However, passengers needn’t worry as emergencies are rare: “Cruise ships today are the safest that ever sailed due to the enhanced rules, regulations and technological innovations that govern their design,” the CLIA spokeswoman said.

“The safety of passengers and crew is top priority for cruise lines and they continually seek opportunities to enhance industry best practices.”

Cruises are currently growing in popularity. Last year 26.7 million people took to the seas, surpassing estimates by the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA).
