CBS’s upcoming sitcom from The Big Bang Theory’s Chuck Lorre has received an outpouring of criticism after a new trailer was released online. The comedy giant’s midseason series, The United States of Al, has already garnered serious backlash for its casting of a non-Afghan actor in the show’s titular role.

Chuck Lorre’s brand new comedy series The United States of Al has been criticised for its depiction of Afghan lead character, Awalmir, ahead of its Thursday, April 1 premiere.

The co-creator and executive producer’s new series stars Adhir Kalyan as ‘Al’, an interpreter who served alongside his friend Riley (played by Parker Young) in Afghanistan.

Despite portraying an Afghan expat in the series, Kalyan was born and raised in South Africa to Indian South African parents.

The show received significant backlash after the first trailer was released on March 5.

The seasoned sitcom producer has yet to comment on the ongoing backlash for CBS’s next potential comedy hit.

However, following The United States of Al’s wave of negative commentary, executive producer Reza Aslan stepped up to defend the series.

The Iranian-American writer and producer urged viewers to wait for the release of the series before criticising, and also reminded his followers that four of the five lead Afghan characters will be portrayed by Afghan actors.

He tweeted: “Maybe learn a little about the show, its creators, its producers, its four Afghan writers, its plot, and pretty much everything else before you announce your opinion of it.”

“Because it’s my show, I can make sure that it is written and produced by Afghans and Muslims. That it uses the format to reframe the perception that people have of both.

“That it portrays a Muslim Afghan protagonist in a true and honest light… Fun fact: you haven’t seen it so can’t really comment from a place of knowledge now, can you?”

Comedy fans now have just over a week before the new series debuts on CBS, though many have already made up their mind on whether or not they’ll be tuning in.

The Big Bang Theory is available to stream on Netflix. The United States of Al premieres Thursday, April 1 on CBS.

Meghan Markle, 36, attended another royal engagement with week, the Queen’s Young Leader Awards at Buckingham Palace.

On the arm of her husband Prince Harry, the Duchess looked glowing in a pale pink Prada dress and perfectly coiffed hair.

Despite everything appearing to be picture perfect, Meghan has been attacked by critics who claim she made a big slip-up with royal protocol.

She was criticised following the event for the way she sat, forgetting to of her “Duchess Slant” and instead crossing her legs over her knees.

Favoured by royal women the Duchess Slant is crossing the legs at the ankle, which Meghan quickly corrected when realising how she was sat.

She has now come under scrutiny for how she engaged with her husband Prince Harry at the Commonwealth awards ceremony, after a video emerged.

The video appears to show Meghan reaching for Harry’s hand to hold it at the event.

Walking behind the Queen, Meghan is seen sticking her hand out towards the prince, hoping he will take her hand.

Harry is shown ignoring Meghan’s advance, bringing his arms even nearer to his side.

Meghan then brushes off the interaction and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, before walking on as though nothing has happened.

Public displays of affection are very rare within the Royal Family, with it reported to be an unwritten royal protocol.

However, the public were quick to condemn the accusations that the 36-year-old was breaking royal protocol, with many Twitter users jumping to her defence.

One tweeted: “Give her a chance this is all new for her stop nit picking” (sic).

Another user questioned both Meghan and Harry’s regard for royal protocol, adding: “She simply doesn’t care about protocol. And Harry with his beard in wedding uniform appears to be the same.”

The no public affection protocol comes from the Queen herself, with that monarch rarely spotted holding Prince Philip’s hand at public engagements.

Kate Middleton and Prince William have long adhered to the unwritten rue, only snapped holding hands on a handful of occasions.

Meghan and Harry have been known to show lots of affection towards each other in public, but not at official state engagements.

The newlyweds were spotted at Royal Ascot last week, where they couldn’t stop touching each other.

Meghan was also spotted holding hands with Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall at Prince Charles’ birthday garden party.

Meghan has been quick to pick up on royal etiquette and protocol since her wedding to Harry last month, but there have been a few slip-ups that haven’t gone unnoticed.

The Split: BBC drama series criticised for its ''absurd' inaccuracies – 'I'm not watching' https://briefnews.eu/the-split-bbc-drama-series-criticised-for-its-absurd-inaccuracies-im-not-watching/ https://briefnews.eu/the-split-bbc-drama-series-criticised-for-its-absurd-inaccuracies-im-not-watching/#respond Wed, 02 May 2018 02:58:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-split-bbc-drama-series-criticised-for-its-absurd-inaccuracies-im-not-watching/

The Split has come under fire from lawyers, who claim the new BBC drama series is littered with legal mistakes.

Despite the rivalry and sexual tension dished out in the second episode of Abi Morgan’s show, viewers could not see past the legal discrepancies.

One person tweeted: “I am not watching #TheSplit – Twitter has told me enough for me to know it would drive me too crazy.

“I shall stick to American lawyer dramas where I can a least pretend to myself absurdities down to jurisdictional differences.”

Another fumed: “This is getting crazier by the minute and sadly is not doing the family legal profession any favours.

“Firstly many family solicitors are in complex relationships or working with their ex partners and clients are rarely represented by solicitors that are related.”

A third asked: “What, pray tell, is a ‘prelim hearing’? And which of us this side of the pond has ever ‘cited’ undue influence? Five minutes in and I’m lobbing items at the tellybox.”

Meanwhile, one viewer sarcastically wrote: “Hang on, this gets better! So they’ve exchanged Form E and ten minutes later they’re having a chat about it in one of the client’s garden?

“Solicitor for the wife had represented husband but it’s OK because the retainer wasn’t signed. Blimey!”

Others complained that they could not keep up with the storyline, with one writing: “I haven’t a glue what’s going on in #TheSplit and this glossy series is certainly not like the lawyers I know.”

“Sorry I tried to get into #TheSPlit again this week and just can’t its not that good,” said another.

Leaving the legal criticism behind, writer Abi recently spoke about the need to create a drama series centred around a complex family.

“I really wanted to tell a story that had all the energy, warmth, vitality and complexity you find in families,” she told The Guardian.

“I think inherently people are scared of talking about it.

“You go out to dinner and speak to a couple who are divorcing, and you sympathise and gossip and then you go home and cling to each other and think, ‘Thank God that’s not us.’

“Yet everybody in a long-term relationship has at some point looked at their own marriage and relationship and wondered. What I hope The Split does is look at that grey area and say, what if?”

However, she did stress the importance of the legal aspect, saying: “The legal stuff is important but it’s really a drama about the personal choices and how our attitudes towards love and marriage and relationships change as we get older.”

She added: “The world of the court is very dark, very austere, trying to make that feel fresh without resorting to all the standard tropes is really hard.

“One of the most exciting things in making this a story about solicitors and not barristers is that you get to spend time in the office. I’ve loved offices ever since I wrote The Hour.”

The Split continues next Tuesday on BBC One at 9pm.

Chelsea news: Antonio Conte criticised by three Blues stars – EXCLUSIVE https://briefnews.eu/chelsea-news-antonio-conte-criticised-by-three-blues-stars-exclusive/ https://briefnews.eu/chelsea-news-antonio-conte-criticised-by-three-blues-stars-exclusive/#respond Tue, 06 Mar 2018 04:06:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/chelsea-news-antonio-conte-criticised-by-three-blues-stars-exclusive/

In the wake of Chelsea’s 1-0 defeat by Manchester City on Sunday – which saw the defending Premier League champions fail to register a shot on goal – Oliver Giroud and Eden Hazard have both called Conte’s tactics into question – with defender Marcos Alonso admitting the squad has an “attitude problem”.

Giroud has questioned Conte’s decision to play Hazard as a lone striker and leave him and fellow striker Alvaro Morata on the bench.

“It’s painful,” said Giroud. “Could we have been more ambitious? It is a good question. The coach made his tactics. We tried to respect that.

“If Eden had an opportunity to score we would have said it was a great choice. It was difficult for Eden but I’m not the coach. The coach makes the team. We have to respect that and give our best, no matter who is on the pitch.”

Hazard admitted as much himself too, saying: “If Olivier Giroud or Alvaro Morata had played up front, it would have been easier. With me, it’s more complicated. I tried my best.

“When the manager plays me up front [on my own], I try to give everything – but it’s difficult when you only touch the ball three times. I tried to jump towards the long balls. But I played against Nicolas Otamendi and Aymeric Laporte. It’s not easy to win duels against them.”

Alonso added: “It’s an attitude problem. We have to change the attitude. We don’t have a problem with quality. We have shown that – and if we don’t reach that kind of level of performance in every match it’s because of our attitude.”

These comments are damning for Conte, whose side are now five points off the top four.

And he will have his work cut out to raise those players for a difficult fortnight which includes a Premier League clash against Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, a Champions League last-16 second leg at Barcelona, then the FA Cup quarter-final with Leicester.

But the manager has now decided to isolate himself inside his Italian “band of brothers” at Chelsea and has effectively cut himself off from the rest of the club.

He has surrounded himself with his nine-man Italian coaching staff, including brother Gianluca and has virtually cut out all the long serving backroom staff.

A source close to the club said: “Conte these days only speaks to the close circle of coaching staff including his brother that he brought to the club with him.

“He does not speak to any of the English staff. There is virtually a total cut off at the training ground.”

Melania Trump Christmas selfie criticised by internet users – ‘I miss Michelle’ https://briefnews.eu/melania-trump-christmas-selfie-criticised-by-internet-users-i-miss-michelle/ https://briefnews.eu/melania-trump-christmas-selfie-criticised-by-internet-users-i-miss-michelle/#respond Wed, 27 Dec 2017 16:23:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/melania-trump-christmas-selfie-criticised-by-internet-users-i-miss-michelle/

Melania Trump, the 47-year-old First Lady of the United States and wife of President Donald Trump, posted a selfie on the social media site Instagram yesterday.

The Slovenian former-model used a filter on the app to add a hat to her head, and glittery reindeer to the image.

The stunning FLOTUS pouted in the picture, showing off her heavy smokey eye make-up, contoured cheek bones and pink lips.

Her hair was sleek and she appeared to be wearing a white dressing gown or a fluffy coat. However, some internet users were not impressed with the picture.

Some even claimed the innocuous image made them pine for the previous First Lady Michelle Obama.

One said: “Stay classy Melania. I miss Michelle.”

Melania was compared to another famous First Lady after posting the image.

They said: “Eleanor Roosevelt once posted very same selfie…and the special cases that support your husband say you’re classy…Unbelievable!”

Another Twitter user wrote: “This can’t be happening America. Please God say it is just a nightmare.”

However, numerous fans praised the selfie from the First Lady. One Twitter user wrote: “@FLOTUS snaps festive Christmas selfie she is absolutely stunning #FirstClass all the way!”

One Instagram user said, “Great picture of our FLOTUS!” and another wrote: “I think you look ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS in this picture who cares what people think.”

Melania’s Christmas style was very festive this year, as she took part in a charity event with her husband Donald, 71.

She wore a red dress as she joined Donald Trump taking phone calls from children tracking Santa on Christmas Eve, before changing into black for church.

The First Lady revealed what Melania and Donald Trump do for Christmas.

They then visit midnight Mass or a service on Christmas Day. The family has two religious beliefs to cater for as Melania is Catholic.

The First Lady also revealed what the family eat on the big day, on which food plays a major part for most families.

She said the family eats “healthy food”, adding: “You feel very good after. Not too much eating.”

Of course the family have their presents, and Melania said: “On the 25th, Santa comes. We open the presents and spend time together.”

Strictly Come Dancing 2017: Shirley Ballas criticised for ‘insensitive' Jonnie comments https://briefnews.eu/strictly-come-dancing-2017-shirley-ballas-criticised-for-insensitive-jonnie-comments/ https://briefnews.eu/strictly-come-dancing-2017-shirley-ballas-criticised-for-insensitive-jonnie-comments/#respond Sun, 19 Nov 2017 10:06:26 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/strictly-come-dancing-2017-shirley-ballas-criticised-for-insensitive-jonnie-comments/

The 24-year-old Paralympian winner was nervous to perform the Tango on tonight’s BBC show alongside pro Oti Mabuse, due to being an amputee.

Seemingly breezing past the contestant’s obvious restrictions on the posture-driven dance to a rendition of Eurythmics’ Sweet Dreams [Are Made of These], Shirley, 57, didn’t hesitate to get straight to the point.

“I’m trying to dream in my mind about how I can help you with your posture,” she said. “I think you need to think of the tailbone in your spine pointed down and your chest.

“Everything just needs to be in a straight line, your tummy doesn’t need to be tucked too far forward just in a straight line.”

The Queen of Latin went on to say that the sportsman’s legs would perform better if he followed her instructions, continuing: “When the vertical line becomes much stronger, the legs operate much better. [Your] frame’s a little bit better, but still for me, posture really it’s got to better. Sorry.”

Viewers couldn’t hide their anger at the judge’s failure to cut Jonnie any slack for his disability, as they took to Twitter in frustration.

One person wrote: “#Strictly I honestly thinks Shirley forgets Jonnie only has one leg. Which is good, but also don’t you under mark him for the bum thing!”

“Dear Shirley, I don’t know if any one has told you but Jonnie is an amputee!” another viewer blasted.

A third complained: “Feel like the judges are being pretty insensitive with Jonnie. For Shirley to focus the criticism on telling him how his legs work best is not on. He’s done amazingly,” followed by: “If you tell him to ‘fix his legs’ and posture one more time!”

Not everyone was keen to blame Shirley for her attempt at constructive comments however, as one person declared: “She obviously didn’t mean it like that – give it a rest guys seriously!”

Strictly Come Dancing continues tomorrow at 7.15pm on BBC One.

Mark Sampson sacked: The FA criticised for failure to probe former England boss' history https://briefnews.eu/mark-sampson-sacked-the-fa-criticised-for-failure-to-probe-former-england-boss-history/ https://briefnews.eu/mark-sampson-sacked-the-fa-criticised-for-failure-to-probe-former-england-boss-history/#respond Thu, 21 Sep 2017 08:13:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mark-sampson-sacked-the-fa-criticised-for-failure-to-probe-former-england-boss-history/

Sampson was sacked not, say the FA, for allegations of racism and bullying – but because of evidence of “inappropriate and unacceptable” behaviour three years ago.

It has emerged that allegations around inappropriate relationships with female players were made against Sampson in 2014 while he was in charge of Bristol Academy women’s team.

An independent report concluded a year later that Sampson “posed no risk” to those working in the game – but the full report was only put before FA chief executive Martin Glenn and chairman Greg Clarke last week after external sources approached the organisation with concerns.

Both men, along with the FA board, made the decision on Monday to sack him – but still allowed him to take charge of the Lionesses 6-0 win over Russia in their World Cup qualifier on Tuesday.

Such a shambles piles more pressure on the FA and Sports Minister Tracey Crouch slammed their handling of the affair.

“This situation is a mess and raises very serious questions about whether the historic processes the FA had in place around the recruitment of coaches were appropriate, for something like this to have been missed,” she said.

“The FA are right to have taken action but reassurance is needed to make sure this does not happen again at any level of coaching.”

It is another huge embarrassment for football’s governing body, who were forced to sack men’s boss Sam Allardyce for “inappropriate conduct” almost exactly 12 months ago. Dismissing another manager for non-football matters leaves the game’s governing body in turmoil.

Sampson, who led England’s women to the semi-finals of the 2015 World Cup, the 2017 Euros and had a 66 per cent win rate, was twice cleared of allegations of racism by independent inquiries. Sampson has always denied all the allegations.

But days after fresh allegations were made, the FA have acted on evidence from three years ago.

Glenn said: “We know that coaches are in a potential position of power and that position mustn’t be abused. We believe he breached the professional boundaries between player and coach.

“He is not deemed a safeguarding risk in football but to us it’s a conduct issue. The standards we set in the FA would not be compatible. Is it appropriate for him to coach again? How can it be?”

FA chairman Greg Clarke said: “Having read the report in detail there are different allegations about different things which is why we’re talking in the plural. Some could be categorised as trivial and some as very serious and none could be categorised as criminal.”

And Glenn added: “My personal learning and regret was that I was made aware there had been an inquiry in October 2015. It was a very perfunctory and verbal report by a head of safeguarding to say that he had been investigated and that he had been cleared to work as a participant in football.

“I guess my mistake was that I took at face value the details of the case were confidential. If I had known then what I know now I would have probed further.

“I just want to reiterate that it’s not an illegal issue, nothing illegal to our knowledge took place. It’s an issue about the relationship between coach and players.”

Glenn denied conveniently disposing of a manager under increasing pressure after Eniola Aluko’s recent discrimination claims.

Sampson, who was put on a “development and mentoring programme” as a result of the original investigation, will be paid under the terms of a termination clause in his contract.

The FA have also announced a full review into what happened and must now begin the search for his successor.

Ivanka Trump criticised for sharing photo hours after Donald’s Charlottesville conference https://briefnews.eu/ivanka-trump-criticised-for-sharing-photo-hours-after-donalds-charlottesville-conference/ https://briefnews.eu/ivanka-trump-criticised-for-sharing-photo-hours-after-donalds-charlottesville-conference/#respond Thu, 17 Aug 2017 15:11:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ivanka-trump-criticised-for-sharing-photo-hours-after-donalds-charlottesville-conference/

Ivanka, 35, shared an image of herself posing and smiling for the camera with Betsy DeVos, 59, the US Secretary of Education and Alexander Acosta, 48, the US Secretary of Labor.

Celebrating the creation of jobs in the tech industry, Ivanka captioned the post: “500,000+ technology jobs are currently unfilled due to a growing skills gap in our country.

“STEM and Computer Science education are key to ensuring Americans are prepared for the jobs in demand in our modern economy.

“Grateful to be able to work closely with Secretary DeVos and Secretary Acosta to ensure access to high quality STEM education for all students across the United States. #STEM”.

But despite receiving over 69,000 likes for the post, Ivanka’s 3.8million followers heaped scorn on her in the comments for not making any reference to her father’s response to Charlottesville.

In a press conference on Tuesday, Donald referred to the anti-Nazi protestors as the “alt-left”, and said: “What about the fact they came charging — that they came charging, with clubs in their hands, swinging clubs? Do they have any problem? I think they do.

“I do think there’s blame on both sides. You look at both sides. I think there’s blame on both sides and I have no doubt about it.” Critics pounced on his words and accused the President of sympathising with alt-right, white supremacists who may have voted for him.

Ivanka did tweet an initial response to the situation in Charlottesville on Saturday, condemning “racism, white supremacy and neo-nazis”, but she has not made further comment since then.

And many of her followers were quick to criticise her for posting on social media without having addressed Donald Trump’s press conference.

One wrote: “Nothing about Charlottesville eh barbie?”

Another said: “Speak up Ivanka!!! Who cares about ur dad’s money and power!!! U don’t need it!! Speak Up” (sic).

One commenter called her a “silent coward”, whilst another wrote the hashtag “complicit”.

Not everyone was critical of Ivanka however, and one person showed her support for the First Daughter, writing: “Ivanka, I’m sorry so many people feel it’s their right to attack and insult you everyday.

“Thanks for doing your best everyday, keeping a steady path and serving our country.

“It’s not easy, and you need to know that not everyone is full of hateful, mean spirited thoughts towards you. Hang in there girl, sorry about this feed.”

Another fan echoed these sentiments, saying simply: “Thanks you for your great incredible work.”

F1 News: Wolff backs Hamilton 'legacy', Ferrari criticised over drivers, Sauber optimism https://briefnews.eu/f1-news-wolff-backs-hamilton-legacy-ferrari-criticised-over-drivers-sauber-optimism/ https://briefnews.eu/f1-news-wolff-backs-hamilton-legacy-ferrari-criticised-over-drivers-sauber-optimism/#respond Wed, 26 Jul 2017 11:28:04 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/f1-news-wolff-backs-hamilton-legacy-ferrari-criticised-over-drivers-sauber-optimism/

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff believes Lewis Hamilton is cementing his place in F1 history with his performances this year.

Hamilton took his fourth win of the season at Silverstone, beating his team-mate Valtteri Bottas to complete a Mercedes one-two at the British Grand Prix.

The Brit is contracted with the Brackley-based outfit until the end of 2018 and recent speculation has linked him with a move to Ferrari or McLaren, or even out of F1 altogether.

But for the moment he remains a Mercedes driver and Wolff has not ceased to be impressed by the 32-year-old’s ability.

“Lewis has delivered some consummate performances this year in China, Canada and Silverstone in particular,” Wolff said.

“The win in front of his home crowd was emotionally charged and I am sure he is carrying that energy with him right now.

“As we see almost each weekend, he is equalling and matching new records in our sport’s history – and building a legacy as one of the sport’s greatest drivers.”

Ferrari should have put Giovinazzi in Haas seat

Ferrari have been criticised by former F1 team owner Giancarlo Minardi for not exploiting their ties with Haas to get Antonio Giovinazzi into a race seat in 2018.

Giovinazzi is Ferrari’s official reserve driver but made his F1 debut for Sauber at the Australian Grand Prix earlier this year, replacing the injured Pascal Wehrlein at the last minute and impressing fans and pundits alike.

The Italian also drove for Sauber at the following Chinese Grand Prix and has been given testing time by Haas.

However, head of Ferrari’s so-called “sister” team Gene Haas has already confirmed that they will “run with the same drivers that we have this year again next year”, a move that has frustrated Minardi.

“If that were the case, it would be a missed opportunity for Ferrari,” Minardi said.

“I remain optimistic and I want to think it is only a move to maintain the serenity within a team that is doing very well, with the goal of winning as many points in the second half of the season.

“It would be a defeat for the entire Ferrari system for young drivers [if Gionvinazzi did not race in 2018].

“It would then be obvious that Ferrari drivers do not enjoy any protection.

“Ferrari would no longer have any decision-making power over its customers, but for now I refuse to think of such a scenario.”

Sauber expect Hungary improvement

Sauber will arrive at the Hungarian Grand Prix with a new team principal in place and a new aerodynamic package which they hope will propel them further up the grid.

Frederic Vasseur will be taking charge of the team at a Grand Prix for the first time since replacing Monisha Kaltenborn earlier this month.

And driver Wehrlein believes the change in personnel and crucially technical improvements should see them go into the summer break on a high.

“I am looking forward to the Hungarian GP, and in particular to the first part of our aerodynamic update which will be introduced there,” said Wehrlein.

“It will be exciting to see how the adaptations will affect our performance.

“This will be our last race before the F1 shutdown – I will do my best to perform well and to finish the first half of the season on a positive note.”

BONDS are bought and sold every second of every day without attracting attention. But it is not often that the seller is the central bank of a brutal, cash-strapped regime faced with protests; the buyer, a bulge-bracket American investment bank; and the size of the deal in the billions of dollars. A report in the Wall Street Journal on May 28th that Goldman Sachs had bought bonds with a face value of $ 2.8bn issued by Venezuela’s state-owned oil company, PDVSA, for 31 cents on the dollar (ie, for $ 865m) caused a stink.

Julio Borges, an opposition politician and president of the National Assembly, lambasted Goldman on May 29th in an open letter to its chief executive, Lloyd Blankfein, for its decision to “aid and abet Venezuela’s dictatorial regime”. For all its sins, that regime has met its obligations to bondholders. Mr Borges vowed to advise future Venezuelan governments not to repay the bonds in question. Protesters gathered outside Goldman’s…
