TVLine chatted with Evil co-creators Robert and Michelle King about what’s ahead as the CBS drama’s season finale approaches, and why David — while holding himself to a, shall we say, higher authority — is allowed to be as flawed as the rest of us.

Evil SEason 1 EPisode 11 David Hospital Robert Michelle King InterviewTVLINE | You’ve said that David’s guilt over sleeping with Renée — and knowing that other people now know about it — will be a through line in the second part of the season. Will the public nature of his weakness make him second-guess himself more?
ROBERT KING | Yes. Two things there. One of which is, that is true, and we want to find, always, the metaphor for the show. The show often finds that psychological conditions find a metaphoric reality, so the very fact that the guilt about Renée and sleeping with her is expressing itself in this person who comes and tries to kill him I think is all of a piece. And the second thing is, look, I’m someone who believes in confession, who believes that human beings can’t help but do bad things because they are you know, they are fallen. I saw some religious people kind of taking the show to task by showing that, “Oh, you’re the priest who sleeps with someone.” Well, first of all, he’s not a priest. And yes, he should not be sleeping with her, but he goes to confession. So many people kind of think TV only has to show pure people, or it’s problematic about religion, and I just think that’s missing the point.
MICHELLE KING | Right. The lay people in our shows are also not perfect, and we wanted to extend the same kind of treatment to the religious, to keep them real.

TVLINE | We’ve seen so many examples over the years of people who choose these lives and then have a very hard time maintaining the incredibly inhuman standard that is set before them, right?
ROBERT KING | I think so. Yeah. I mean, in many ways, we’ve talked a lot about him being imbedded with Marines and so on, and we were trying to make a connection: Diligence in religious matters is equivalent to those who do very tough things and require very tough things of themselves. Yes, people will fail.

Evil SEason 1 EPisode 11 David Hospital Robert Michelle King InterviewTVLINE | Li Jun Li is back in this episode, when Grace warns David of danger. What can you tease about Grace’s involvement in the rest of the season? Will we see her again?
ROBERT KING | Well, first of all, part of this was a reaction to her performance. We just fell in love with her.
MICHELLE KING | Yeah.
ROBERT KING | There’s this odd sense of holiness about her that’s like Song of Bernadette. What we really liked about [Grace] is that she is a human being, but there was also something that was authoritative about her, whether you call it prophecy or her intuitiveness. So what we thought, if she’s still living on in David’s mind as this presence that’s is the closest he’s seen on Earth to God, I guess. She’s not a priest. She’s not a nun. She just probably just goes to church every Sunday. But what he sees in her is someone who God talks to, and I think that just means so much to him that he’s kind of kept her around, as, like furniture in his brain, you know? And the woman who acts the part is just so amazing.

TVLINE | I noticed that Kristen’s husband, Andy, isn’t in the episode. Is Kristen feeling like he’s on the periphery of her life? What’s her mindset as we move past toward the end of the season?
MICHELLE KING | No, I think she does not see him in the periphery. She has a very full life, a career that is exciting to her, and of course, the four kids. No. She considers her marriage important.
ROBERT KING | And we’ll see him come back in a big way in [Episode] 12. Part of it is that Patrick Brammall has his own show, No Activity. Obviously, we are constantly pulling him away from that to do our show, so part of it is living within what we can do with that.
MICHELLE KING | The realities of producing. [Laughs]

The shortage of fuel prompted the authorities to order police and military to accompany convoys carrying fuel for public transport, ambulances and police cars.

Late on Sunday, Temer said that his government had addressed all of the demands put forward by the truckers. The government’s concessions include a 12-percent decrease in diesel prices, amounting to 46 Brazilian cents ($ 0.13) per liter, which will remain in effect for the next 60 days. After this two-month discount expires, the government will gradually readjust the price, Temer said, “so each trucker will be able to better plan his costs and freight value.”

Under the new set of rules, truckers will no longer be subject to fees by toll operators when their rear axles are not in use – that is, when they are not carrying cargo.  

Another decree provides freelance truck drivers with a guarantee that they will receive at least 30 percent of the freight, while the final decree unveiled on Sunday is set to establish a minimum fare for freight to be paid to the drivers.

The concessions announced by Temer represent a sharp turnaround from his belligerent rhetoric on Friday, when he said that he would not hesitate to send in the army to clear the roads if dialogue with the protesters did not bear fruit.

The previous agreement reached on Thursday did not help to mitigate the crisis, with the biggest drivers’ union, the Brazilian Association of Truckers (Abcam), rejecting the deal. Temer blamed the agreement’s failure on a “radical minority,” accusing the drivers of taking the population hostage over their woes. 

Brazil depends heavily on trucking to deliver products all over the country and for export due to its poorly developed rail network. Fuel prices in the country have almost doubled since the 2016 impeachment of former president Dilma Rousseff and her subsequent replacement by Michel Temer, who had been her vice president.

For the latest research has found that over-50s delay seeking treatment for an average of 16 months despite the fact that two thirds of pain sufferers are prevented from living their lives to the full.

Over two in five (42 per cent) over 50s are needlessly suffering with pain – such as knee, hip, back or neck pain – and 85 per cent have suffered over the last two years, according to a new study from leading orthopaedic experts group, Fortius Clinic.

The pain is so severe that two thirds (63 per cent) of sufferers have been prevented from leading normal lives, being unable to drive, see friends or play sports, with one in 10 admitting it has affected their mental health.

But despite living in crippling pain, many (64 per cent) are suffering in silence by either putting off or never seeking treatment. On average, those who delay treatment do so for a staggering 16 months.

Knee pain causes the longest suffering, with 57 per cent delaying or never getting treatment and those who delay doing so for an average of 17 months.

Hip pain is the most commonly ignored with 63 per cent of people delaying treatment or not seeking it at all. Those who delay do so for an average of 14.5 months.

Women with hip pain are some of the most reluctant to seek help, being twice as likely to delay treatment for up to a year in comparison to men (31% vs 16%).

However, the study found that in hindsight some regretted their decision to delay, with one in five (19 per cent) wishing they had sought help sooner and 14 per cent considering self-funding to access treatment more quickly next time.

The research comes as leading orthopaedic clinic Fortius announces the launch of the new specialist Fortius Joint Replacement Centre, in partnership with Bupa Cromwell Hospital, designed to bring the latest robotic technology and best possible surgical outcomes to patients requiring knee or hip replacements.

With knees (37 per cent) and hips (24 per cent) two of the most common causes of pain for the over 50s in the last two years, orthopaedic experts argue this group should stop putting their lives on hold and seek help sooner rather than later if symptoms are sufficiently bad.

Andy Williams, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and founder surgeon at Fortius Clinic said: “The number of people putting off seeking help for joint pain is staggering.

“Over 50s today are more active than ever and should be looking forward to so many more healthy years ahead – but by ignoring their pain and disability, and the success of joint replacement, they are condemned to prolonged suffering.”

A definitive list of superfoods has been compiled for sufferers by scientists, including olive oil and green tea.

The researchers say they have proven beneficial effects recommended for fighting the symptoms and progression of the crippling condition.

Dr Bhawna Gupta, one of the researchers behind the study, said: “Regular consumption of specific dietary fibres, vegetables, fruits and spices, as well as the elimination of components that cause inflammation and damage, can help patients to manage the effects of rheumatoid arthritis. 

“Incorporating probiotics into the diet can also reduce the progression and symptoms of this disease.

“Patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis should switch from omnivorous diets, drinking alcohol and smoking to Mediterranean, vegan, elemental or elimination diets, as advised by their doctor or dietician.”

In the UK, some 10 million people now suffer from arthritis – 8.5 million of them from the most common form osteoarthritis, which is caused by wear and tear on joints where the cartilage is worn away.

Around 400,000 people in Britain suffer from rheumatoid arthritis – a disease in which the body’s own immune system attacks the body’s joints.

Last night charities involved in research into the condition welcomed the findings of the study by KIIT University in India.

Dr Natalie Carter, head of research liaison and evaluation at Arthritis Research UK, said: “Research has shown that maintaining a healthy weight and eating a Mediterranean-style diet can be beneficial for some people with arthritis. In particular, Omega 3 fatty acids from oily fish have been shown to help with symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.”

The latest study found diet plays a crucial role.

Dr Gupta said: “Supporting disease management through food and diet does not pose any harmful side effects and is relatively cheap and easy.

“Doctors, physicians and dieticians can use our study to summarise current proven knowledge on the links between certain foods and rheumatoid arthritis.

“Knowing the nutritional and medicinal requirements of their patients they can then tailor this information for the betterment of their health.”

Various dietary plans for rheumatoid arthritis – such as vegan, seven to 10 days fasting and Mediterranean – have long been recommended.

But the research team said their study – only the second overall assessment of diet and food regarding the disease – provided a thorough evaluation of current scientific knowledge and made a point of only reporting dietary interventions and specific foods that clearly show proven long-term effects.

The researchers hope the study, published in the journal Frontiers In Nutrition, can also be used as a reference for the development of new medicines.

Dr Gupta said: “Our review focused on specific dietary components and phytochemicals from foods that have a proven beneficial effect on rheumatoid arthritis.

“Pharmaceutical companies may use this information to formulate ‘nutraceuticals’.

“Nutraceuticals have an advantage over chemically tailored medicines as they are not associated with any side effects, originate from natural sources and are cheaper.”

A crippling flaw affecting millions—and possibly hundreds of millions—of encryption keys used in some of the highest-stakes security settings is considerably easier to exploit than originally reported, cryptographers declared over the weekend. The assessment came as Estonia abruptly suspended 760,000 national ID cards used for voting, filing taxes, and encrypting sensitive documents.

The critical weakness allows attackers to calculate the private portion of any vulnerable key using nothing more than the corresponding public portion. Hackers can then use the private key to impersonate key owners, decrypt sensitive data, sneak malicious code into digitally signed software, and bypass protections that prevent accessing or tampering with stolen PCs. When researchers first disclosed the flaw three weeks ago, they estimated it would cost an attacker renting time on a commercial cloud service an average of $ 38 and 25 minutes to break a vulnerable 1024-bit key and $ 20,000 and nine days for a 2048-bit key.

Organizations known to use keys vulnerable to ROCA—named for the Return of the Coppersmith Attack the factorization method is based on—have largely downplayed the severity of the weakness. Estonian officials initially said the attack was “complicated and not cheap” and went on to say: “Large-scale vote fraud is not conceivable due to the considerable cost and computing power necessary of generating a private key.” Netherlands-based smartcard maker Gemalto, meanwhile, has said only that its IDPrime.NET—a card it has sold for more than a decade as, among other things, a way to provide two-factor authentication to employees of Microsoft and other companies—”may be affected” without providing any public guidance to customers.
