It is no exaggeration to say that the comedy duo of Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim has produced some of the most gut-wrenchingly funny and disturbing television in the history of the medium.

After meeting in film school at Temple University in the ’90s, Tim and Eric found a home at Adult Swim in the mid 2000s, where they released a string of innovative, 11-minute shows, including the animated “Tom Goes to the Mayor” and the absurdist sketch comedy “Tim and Eric’s Awesome Show, Great Job!”

In the first season of their latest show, “Tim & Eric’s Bedtime Stories,” the pair crafted ten diverse and darkly hilarious short films. One episode featured Bob Odenkirk (“Better Call Saul”) as a doctor specializing in toe removal, and another found Jason Schwartzman (“The Grand Budapest Hotel”) confronting a demented billboard ad that comically distorted the actor’s face.

Eric Wareheim talked to Business Insider about the “creepier” second season of “Bedtime Stories” and the process of making a 10-year anniversary episode of “Awesome Show,” which premiered in August. We also touched on his burgeoning wine business, his experience acting on Netflix’s “Master of None,” and the two feature films he’s writing.

Season two of “Tim & Eric’s Bedtime Stories” premieres Sunday at midnight EST on Adult Swim.

John Lynch: The “Awesome Show” anniversary episode was fantastic. As you’re switching between sketch comedy and the cinematic structure of “Bedtime Stories,” do you find it’s easier to be in one of those modes than the other at this point?

DG4rYK3WAAAmDYxAdult SwimEric Wareheim: Yeah, we hadn’t done the sketch show for a while. We’d been in story mode, doing “Bedtime Stories,” and I was doing “Master of None.” As soon as we got back to sketch mode, we spent a week doing “Awesome Show” and had so much fun because it’s such a different energy. It’s really quick, you get to be really crazy, and you don’t have to develop characters. It was easy to switch back, and we had a blast doing it. We were pretty much just crying on set every day, crying from laughing. A lot more laughter when you’re making sketch comedy. You get to the joke really quick.

Lynch: Do you feel it’s more rewarding, in a way, to find humor within the structure of “Bedtime Stories?”

Wareheim: They’re both equally rewarding. I can’t say one is better than the other. But as former film students, making “Bedtime Stories” is satisfying in the way that it looks like a film, sounds like a film, and there are really great actors involved. Sometimes “Bedtime Stories” feels almost like a trick, where you get settled in like, “Oh, I’m watching something pleasant here,” and then you’re like, “Oh, my God. This is happening?” But with “Awesome Show,” the video element just looks so wild that you know something wild is going to happen. With “Bedtime Stories,” you’re tricked into feeling like you’ve seen it before, if you’ve seen movies and dramatic TV.

Lynch: Would you say that this season is darker than season one? I’ve only seen the trailer, but that was the impression I got, that it’s more … Cronenberg.

Wareheim: Yeah, it’s more kind of … Lars Von Trier. More reflective of our culture and society right now. Things are getting crazy. Things are getting nightmarish, and that’s reflected in our show. As two guys getting older, dealing with these heavy issues, we’ve kind of naturally put that into our stories. And yes, the new season is darker, creepier, but also pretty funny.

Lynch: In what ways did you approach this season differently than the first one? Were there things you brought over from it?

Wareheim: Well, yes, we brought in the same style, the same soundscapes, same score, same kind of energy. But we learned a lot from season one. We know what works now, and we feel that season two is a whole new world that we’re super excited about.

Lynch: I think your fans really appreciate the versatility of your sensibilities. Do you have any sense of whether diehard fans of “Awesome Show” appreciate “Bedtime Stories” to the same degree?

Wareheim: You know, we’ve been walking our fans through our library since “Tom Goes to the Mayor,” which is very different than “Awesome Show,” and “Bedtime Stories” is very different than “Awesome Show” as well. But they all have these similar themes, and I feel like if you’re on board with a couple of these themes, and you’re a fan, you can go with us to other places. And that’s the hope of anyone’s career is to have it be dynamic and not staying the same. I’m glad we took seven years off and didn’t make “Awesome Show.” We came back, and I feel like this special is one of the strongest “Awesome Shows” we’ve made.

Lynch: The post-production editing that’s so prominent on “Awesome Show” and “Tom Goes to the Mayor,” it’s used to a lesser degree on “Bedtime Stories.” Do you feel like you’ve exhausted that tool in a way?

Wareheim: No, I don’t. I feel like with the “Awesome Show” special we tried to do some new things, which I was totally surprised at from our editors, to go to new places. We’ve seen a lot of people try to recreate what we do, and no one’s really done it quite yet. I wish people would take our editing style and take it to the next level, but I don’t think we’re done with it yet. There are more places to go.

Lynch: Your style is definitely trending toward being more cinematic, and you’ve done a feature film in the past. Do you see another feature on your horizon?

Wareheim: Yes. I’m writing two feature films right now. It’s the most exciting thing that’s happened to me. I went to film school because I wanted to be a filmmaker. Tim and I made a film, and it was really hard, but this is my personal passion. They’re going to be a combination of drama and comedy, in a very dark, dark way. We’ve been making so much sh-t, so we’re going to take a couple months the rest of this year to do some writing.

Lynch: When you’re in that film mindset, do ideas germinate in the same way that a “Bedtime Stories” episode does, and then you build on it?

Wareheim: Yeah. It all comes from experiential things. For example, when I was in New York shooting “Master of None,” I encountered a lot of wild, amazing things, and I’m turning those things into a feature. And it’s just like “Bedtime Stories” is based off of our real fears or real things that have happened to us, and then we exaggerate them for dramatic effect. That’s where everything comes from.

Lynch: Definitely. My phone was a breaking up a bit at the end there. Sometimes these phone interviews feel like I’m Ed Begley in the “Cinco-Fone” sketch from “Awesome Show.”

Wareheim:  [a weary laugh]  Yeah. Definitely, a Cinco communication system.

Lynch: On another note, you’ve also been a successful music video director throughout your career. Are there any recent music videos that you’ve admired?

Wareheim: Sh-t. I can’t think off the top of my head really. I don’t watch that much comedy, and I don’t watch that many music videos. Not to be all high falutin about it, but I like to keep my voice pretty pure and try not to follow the trends and stuff like that. I’m sure there are some great music videos out there.

Lynch: I understand you also have a wine company that you’re looking to build. What’s been the operation behind that, and how do you approach it?

Wareheim: Well, if you’ve been following my Instagram for the last five years, you know I’m a real fan of food and travel and culture, and wine is like the base of a lot of culture I feel. I’ve learned so much about different places through wine, and I wanted to do something amazing in America and do it naturally. There’s a new kind of wine making, it’s not new, but it’s a style that’s just becoming popular called natural winemaking. And I wanted to be a part of it, and I want to give back to the world. One of the wines is actually a Dr. Steve Brule Sweetberry wine, if you know that sketch. That was sort of the start of this business, but I have a winemaker Joel Burt, who’s a genius, and we said to ourselves, “Let’s make good wine. Let’s not make it a joke.” And that’s what happened. Now we have a whole line of wines coming out in the fall that are incredible.

(Welcome to Now Stream This, a column dedicated to the best movies streaming on Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, and every other streaming service out there.)

Crank the air conditioner – August is upon us, bringing with it the dog days of summer and the realization that the winter is more terrifyingly close than ever. But there’s still plenty of time left to stream movies. In fact, you have your entire life to do that, so why not get started now? If you’re unsure of just what to watch, never fear – Now Stream This is here.

In this edition, we have a recent film with a stellar performance from the late, great Sam Shepard; one of the most genuinely creepy ghost movies ever made; an ambitious, often misunderstood sci-fi epic; a Stephen King adaptation; one of the strangest sequels in Hollywood history, and much more! So dab some sunscreen on your nose and pull the recliner up nice and close to the TV. Let’s get streaming.

1. Cold In July
Now Streaming on Netflix

Actor and playwright Sam Shepard died earlier this week. Shepard’s death is a great loss to film and theatre, but at least he leaves behind a wealth of work to cherish. There’s plenty to pick from to highlight Shepard’s talent, but one of the best recent examples is Jim Mickle’s 2014 thriller Cold In July. Adapted from a story by Joe R. Lansdale and throwing off some serious John Carpenter vibes, Cold In July features Michael C. Hall as a man who kills a home intruder, only to be drawn into a much bigger and far more sinister plot with the dead intruder’s father, played masterfully by Shepard. Don Johnson also shows up, and nearly steals the whole film, but this is a perfect showcase for Shepard’s talents.

For fans of: Hap and Leonard, Christine, Blue Ruin, mullets.

2. The Friends of Eddie Coyle
Now Streaming on FilmStruck

If you like your crime dramas bleak and grainy, don’t miss Peter Yates’ marvelous, depressing The Friends of Eddie Coyle. Robert Mitchum gives a career-best performance as weary, aging bakery truck driver Eddie Coyle. To make ends meet, Coyle runs guns on the side – a smooth operation that goes south very quickly. One of those ’70s flicks where the film grain is essentially a character itself, The Friends of Eddie Coyle is melancholy and memorable, just don’t sit down to watch it expecting a feel-good experience.

For fans of: The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, The Town, existential woe.

3. Lake Mungo
Now Streaming on Shudder

This criminally underseen 2010 Australian chiller from Joel Anderson is the rarest of the rare: a modern horror movie that’s actually scary. And I’m not talking about cheap jump scares here. No, Lake Mungo is a ghost story that creeps under your skin and chills your blood, having you nervously looking around once it’s over. A found-footage style story of a family coming to terms with the sudden death of a loved one who may or may not have entirely departed. This is the perfect horror film to watch in your living room with the lights turned down. Just don’t be surprised when you’re quickly turning them back on once the credits are rolling (oh, and by the way, keep watching all the way through the credits for even more creepiness).

For fans of: Session 9, Paranormal Activity, The Others, getting the creeps.

4. Laura
Now Streaming on FilmStruck

Otto Preminger’s brilliant film noir sets up a seemingly straightforward mystery: who killed successful advertising executive Laura Hunt (Gene Tierney)? But nothing is straightforward in Laura, and the film travels down dark alleys you wouldn’t have suspected as the cop investigating the case (Dana Andrews) finds himself smitten with the dead dame. Somehow simultaneously breezy and disturbing, Laura is one of the best movies Hollywood ever produced, so you should probably get around to watching it if it’s somehow escaped you all this time.

For fans of: Anatomy of a Murder, The Big Sleep, Touch of Evil, Vincent Price without a mustache.

5. Cloud Atlas
Now Streaming on Netflix

Even if you don’t entirely like Cloud Atlas, you have to appreciate it for the ambitious, wild film experience that it is. The Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer adapted David Mitchell’s novel into a sprawling 171 minute extravaganza. Multiple plots stretch out across six different time periods, from the past into the distant future, with a cast that includes Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent, Hugo Weaving, Jim Sturgess, Ben Whishaw, Hugh Grant and many, many more, all playing multiple characters. It’s almost impossible to summarize this movie – you just need to see it to believe it.

For fans of: The Fountain, The Matrix, The Hours, Tom Hanks using an incredibly unconvincing Irish accent.

MAPPED: The eight creepiest places on earth you really shouldn’t visit https://briefnews.eu/mapped-the-eight-creepiest-places-on-earth-you-really-shouldnt-visit/ https://briefnews.eu/mapped-the-eight-creepiest-places-on-earth-you-really-shouldnt-visit/#respond Tue, 11 Apr 2017 17:21:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mapped-the-eight-creepiest-places-on-earth-you-really-shouldnt-visit/

For some, fear strikes at something as simple as a strange noise in the middle of the night.

For others, scary places are a source of adventure; the ultimate thrill.

Vibrantdoors.co.uk has rounded up the creepiest places on earth, where the easily scared should steer clear.

Indulge your curiosity anyway, with a virtual tour of the eerie and the abandoned, from the comfortably safe distance of your computer.

Pripyat, Ukraine

Once home to 50,000 people, Pripyat has been a ghost town since 1986.

Lying near the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, the area was evacuated when the site melted down and no one has been allowed to live there ever since.

Don’t miss: The creepy ferris wheel

Ryugyong Hotel, North Korea

Nicknamed the Hotel of Doom, this 105-storey building has been abandoned for more than two decades.

The pyramid-shaped structure in North Korea was due to open in 1989, but the fall of the Soviet Union and subsequent economic catastrophe meant the doors remained closed.

Over recent years, many dates for a final opening have been announced but never delivered.

Don’t miss: Eight storeys of rotating floors

Hashima Island, Japan

This island town was once thriving with 5,000 coal miners until it was abandoned when all the reserves dried up.

It also used to be a site of forced labour during the Second World War.

Undisturbed concrete buildings are slowly being swallowed up by the surrounding forces of nature.

Don’t miss: A walk through the old housing complex

City Hall Station, New York

This railway station was built in 1904 but closed in 1945.

Once the southern terminal station of the New York City Subway, the site had to be shut down because it was built on a curve; eventually unable to accommodate bigger trains.

Don’t miss: The architecture: elegant curves, chandeliers and skylights

Holy Land, Connecticut

Located in Waterbury, this eerie site was built as a Bible-based theme park.

Holy Land lured over 40,000 visitors each year during the 1960s and 1970s.

But it was closed down in 1984 for renovations which never came.

The abandoned park has lapsed into disrepair over decades of neglect.

Don’t miss: The 50-foot-high stainless steel cross

El Hotel del Salto, Colombia

Perched on a cliff opposite a relentless, foaming waterfall, this hotel used to be a lucrative destination for tourists.

But after the local river became contaminated by upstream industrial waste, the whole place had to be closed down in the 1990s.

Don’t miss: The breathtaking views of Tequendama falls across the ravine

IM Cooling Tower, Belgium

This abandoned power station towers over the town of Charleroi.

It was built in 1921, processing 480,000 gallons of water each minute at its peak.

Protests against the severe carbon dioxide emissions of the power plant ensured the whole tower was closed for good in 2007.

Don’t miss: The massive moss-covered hole inside the tower

Floating Forest, Sydney

This broken up shipyard has been left to develop in Australia, providing a truly incredible site today.

Over the last few decades, trees, plants and all manner of flora have taken over the old ships one by one.

Don’t miss: The SS Airfield, a massive 1,140-tonne steam collier used in WW2 as a transport ship

REVEALED: These are the 10 creepiest places on EARTH https://briefnews.eu/revealed-these-are-the-10-creepiest-places-on-earth/ https://briefnews.eu/revealed-these-are-the-10-creepiest-places-on-earth/#respond Sat, 25 Mar 2017 14:32:26 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/revealed-these-are-the-10-creepiest-places-on-earth/

From haunted islands to churches filled with bones, there’s no shortage of show-stopping fear

The earth is an enormous place and some of its surfaces are best off avoided.

YouTube channel Top Lists has rounded up the 10 creepiest places on earth.

Some are forbidden for humans to enter and the others would tempt only the most extreme adventurer.

From haunted islands to churches filled with bones, there’s no shortage of show-stopping fear in this eerie lineup.

10. Catacombs of Paris

Europe’s cities have experienced issues with burial space right throughout history.

In the French capital, bodies and bones were piled on top of each other, with others dug up and stuffed into buildings when space ran out in cemeteries.

These cemeteries were eventually closed and their contents removed.

Human remains were sent to mining tunnels underneath the city, which are now called the Catacombs of Paris.

Holding the bones of an estimated six million bodies, the catacombs often lure daredevils who gain illegal access – a task so dangerous it has led to several deaths.

9. The Prehistoric Forest

Set in the Irish Hills, Michigan, this safari opened in the 1960s, filled with fibreglass dinosaurs.

Since the park closed in 1999, the prehistoric animals have been left to rot, slowly engulfed by the surrounding vegetation.

8. Chapel of Bones, Portugal

A 16th century monk built this creepy chapel from the bones of 5,000 monks.

Skulls line the walls and two mummified corpses – one of which is a child – dangle from the roof.

7. Muynak, Uzbekistan

A once prosperous city filled with tens of thousands of people, Muynak is now abandoned.

It used to be a coastal town until Soviet agricultural projects started pumping the water away in the 1950s.

So much water was drained that Muynak is now an arid, dry area miles from any coast.

Several rusting fishing boats remain, which now rest on dust and sand.

Creepy places – Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave, holds the remains of 14 skeletons

6. Sedlec Ossuary, Czech Republic

Also known as the bone church, this ossuary is built from human bones.

About 40,000 people’s remains have been used to construct this eerie building, formed in the 19th century.

5. Pripyat, Ukraine

Once home to 50,000 people, Pripyat has been a ghost town since 1986.

Lying near the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, the area was evacuated when the site melted down and no one has been allowed to live there ever since.

4. Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave, Belize

Not for the fainthearted, the journey to this cave is a treacherous one.

Travellers have to walk through the jungle and then swim to reach the haunted site.

The thousand-year-old cave was once a Mayan sacrificial ground, with 14 skeletons buried there.

Most well known is the skeleton of the Crstyal Maiden, cemented to the floor in a disturbingly preserved position.

Creepy places – the Island of the Dolls is filled with bizarre toys

3. Island of Dolls, Mexico

The body of a small girl once washed up on this bizarre island, along with a doll.

Don Julian Santana Barrera – the island’s caretaker – began to string dolls along the island to pay respect to her.

Don grew obsessed with the creepy hobby, continuing it for 50 years until 2001, when his own body washed up in the exact same spot as the girl’s once did.

Creepy dolls remain hanging over trees and propped on fences over this haunted Mexican waterway.

2. Mount Everest

The upper end of the world’s tallest mountain is known as the death zone.

Almost 300 people have died and more than 150 of the bodies remain there.

Bringing the bodies down the mountain is all but impossible in some cases, with the deadly task having caused more deaths in the past.

Some of the remaining bodies are now important signposts for other climbers who make the extreme trek.

1. Centralia, Pennsylvania

In 1962, a fire broke out in a coal mine beneath the town of Centralia – and never went out.

The town has since been abandoned, with the blaze still burning.

Buildings in the area have been bulldozed, forcing cracks through the roads, where dangerous steam from below leaks through.
