  • The White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders and reporters sparred during the White House press briefing on Wednesday.
  • Earlier in the day, President Donald Trump said “no” after a reporter asked him whether the US is still a target of Russian-led cyberattacks and meddling into US elections.
  • That directly contradicts what the director of national intelligence has said.
  • According to Sanders, Trump was saying “no” to answering more questions.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders and reporters sparred during the White House press briefing on Wednesday over what President Donald Trump meant when he said “no” earlier in the day.

While taking questions from reporters at a cabinet meeting, Trump said “thank you very much, no” after ABC News White House correspondent Cecilia Vega asked whether the US is still a target of Russian-led cyberattacks and meddling into US elections — directly contradicting what director of national intelligence Dan Coats has said on the matter.

US won’t be lectured by countries that lack any credibility over Israel & Palestine – Haley to UNSC https://briefnews.eu/us-wont-be-lectured-by-countries-that-lack-any-credibility-over-israel-palestine-haley-to-unsc/ https://briefnews.eu/us-wont-be-lectured-by-countries-that-lack-any-credibility-over-israel-palestine-haley-to-unsc/#respond Sat, 09 Dec 2017 23:59:56 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-wont-be-lectured-by-countries-that-lack-any-credibility-over-israel-palestine-haley-to-unsc/

America’s envoy to the UN, Nikki Haley, has claimed that only the United States, and not the 14 other nations comprising the UN Security Council, has credibility when it comes to mediating the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Palestinians, however, see things very differently.

Haley was speaking at an emergency session of the UN Security Council Friday, convened at the request of eight of the fifteen countries making up the international body. The meeting followed President Donald Trump’s decision to move the American embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv, officially acknowledging the contested city as Israel’s capital. The decision was unanimously condemned by all members of the Security Council – apart from the US, of course – for undermining the ongoing peace process.

“The UN has done much more to damage the prospects for Middle East peace than to advance them. We will not be a party to that. The United States no longer stands by when Israel is unfairly attacked in the United Nations. And the United States will not be lectured to by countries that lack any credibility when it comes to treating both Israelis and Palestinians fairly,” Haley said at the assembly.

“It is no coincidence that the historic peace agreements between Egypt and Israel, and between Jordan and Israel, were both signed on the lawns of the White House. If and when there is a historic peace agreement between the Israelis and Palestinians, there’s a good likelihood, that it too, will be signed on the White House lawn.

Why is that? It’s because the United States has credibility with both sides. Israel will never be, and should never be, bullied into an agreement by the United Nations, or by any collection of countries that have proven their disregard for Israel’s security,” Haley added.

Palestinian leaders, however, have taken a different view of Haley and Trump’s American exceptionalism. On Saturday, Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki told reporters in Cairo that his government would no longer be looking towards Washington to serve in a peacemaking role.

“We will seek a new mediator from our Arab brothers and the international community, a mediator who can help with reaching a two-state solution,” Reuters quoted al-Maliki as saying.

Trump’s decision to decertify nuclear deal harms US credibility – Iranian FM https://briefnews.eu/trumps-decision-to-decertify-nuclear-deal-harms-us-credibility-iranian-fm/ https://briefnews.eu/trumps-decision-to-decertify-nuclear-deal-harms-us-credibility-iranian-fm/#respond Sat, 14 Oct 2017 22:08:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/trumps-decision-to-decertify-nuclear-deal-harms-us-credibility-iranian-fm/ US President Donald Trump’s recent decision not to recertify Tehran’s compliance with the 2015 nuclear agreement will only undermine Washington’s own credibility in the international arena, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said.

“Nobody else will trust any US administration to engage in any long-term negotiation because the length of any commitment, the duration of any commitment from now on with any US administration would be the remainder of the term of that president,” the top Iranian diplomat told CBS News.

At the same time, he said that Iran will not withdraw from the deal, as other parties to it, including Russia, Germany, France and the UK, reaffirmed their commitment to the obligations taken under the 2015 agreement.

Zarif said that the support of most parties to the agreement means that the implementation of the deal would move forward despite the US efforts to derail it. He also praised the deal, on which he personally worked for two years, as a triumph of diplomacy.

The Iranian minister expressed his hope for a potential diplomatic “reset” of relations with the US, but said at the same time that the current US administration apparently suffers from a cognitive disorder when it comes to the Middle East.

“I believe the Trump administration is closing its eyes on the realities of our region. We believe it will be important for the United States, for the Trump administration to exercise a reset in its cognitive disorder with regard to our region,” he said.

Earlier, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani expressed similar thoughts, saying on Friday that the US is “now more than ever isolated” because of its opposition to the deal. He also confirmed Tehran’s commitment to the agreement but only as long as Iranian national interests are preserved.

Iran would “never bow to any foreign pressure,” Rouhani said, adding that the accord cannot be renegotiated or amended.

On Friday, Trump announced that he is deferring the matter to the US Congress, so that it could amend the agreement and “strengthen its enforcement.” He once again claimed that Tehran committed “multiple violations” of the deal, despite the International Atomic Energy Agency’s confirmation of Iran’s compliance. The US also imposed a fresh set of sanctions against the Islamic Republic, unrelated to its nuclear program.

The US president’s move provoked outcry around the world. Many countries, including US allies, condemned the step by saying that it undermines international security. The 2015 Iran nuclear deal is not a “bilateral agreement,” and it is not up to the US to terminate it, EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said.

The Russian Foreign Ministry also slammed Trump’s Friday speech, saying that any use of “aggressive” rhetoric in international relations is “unacceptable” and “doomed to fail.” It also denounced the actions of the US administration as “vestiges of the past” that “are at odds with the modern norms of civilized communication between countries.”

However, Israel and Saudi Arabia welcomed Trump’s decision and called it a “courageous” move.

The Iranian nuclear deal was negotiated in summer 2015 by the administration of then-US President Barack Obama and five other powers – Russia, France, Germany, China and the United Kingdom – as well as Iran.

Under the terms of the deal, in exchange for the gradual lifting of sanctions, Tehran agreed to reduce the number of its uranium enrichment centrifuges by two-thirds, cap its enrichment below the level needed for weapons-grade material, reduce its enriched uranium stockpile by 98 percent and allow international inspections.

Tehran’s full compliance was repeatedly confirmed by the IAEA, the UN nuclear watchdog, which reiterated on Friday that Iran is subject to the “world’s most robust nuclear verification regime” and that so far the agency has “had access to all locations it needed to visit.”

Trump, however, has repeatedly called the agreement the “worst deal ever negotiated,” and pledged to “dismantle” it.

Conor can maul boxing’s credibility: Fenech https://briefnews.eu/conor-can-maul-boxings-credibility-fenech/ https://briefnews.eu/conor-can-maul-boxings-credibility-fenech/#respond Fri, 25 Aug 2017 10:39:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/conor-can-maul-boxings-credibility-fenech/

‘The new king of boxing’?0:44

Boxing: The UFC’s program Embedded has given a behind the scene look at what Conor McGregor said to Floyd Mayweather during Thursday’s face-off.

Conor McGergor could ruin boxing’s credibility should he beat Floyd Mayweather.

Phil Rothfield in Las VegasThe Daily Telegraph

AT 2pm tomorrow afternoon the credibility of world boxing goes on the line.

And Australia’s greatest fighter, Jeff Fenech, is concerned UFC superstar Conor McGregor could destroy it. And he’s not alone.

Boxing has nothing to gain but everything to lose in this Mayweather-McGregor super fight that will be watched by a potential world audience of 100 million fans.

If Floyd Mayweather wins and takes his undefeated record to 50, it’s what we all expected.

Yet McGregor has an excuse in that he a martial arts machine, not a boxer.

If the UFC champion wins, boxing will be seen as the weaker of the two combat sports.

“This guy (McGregor) is so unconventional,” Fenech said. “He’s going to put his heart and soul into it.

“He’ll either get knocked out or he’ll knock Floyd out. It’s going to be closer than we think.

“Most of the boxers Floyd has fought have been a little but cautious. Not this guy.

“Sometimes I wonder why the bout was ever sanctioned considering one guy has never fought as a boxer. I guess money speaks all languages.”

Fenech fears the age and weight advantage will work in McGregor’s favour.

Plus the fact Mayweather hasn’t fought for two years and doesn’t appear to be taking the fight as seriously as one might expect.

In between training he’s spent most nights this week at his new strip club in downtown Las Vegas entertaining guests with his girls in lingerie.

Fenech expects him to win but fears a boilover.

“McGregor’s going to be really dangerous,” Fenech said, “He’s 20 pounds bigger. He’s stronger.

“Floyd knows this guy is going to attack him. He’s trouble. And he can fight. People are thinking it can’t happen but it can.

White on how Conor can win6:40

Boxing: UFC president Dane White tells us why McGregor can win

“Buster Douglas knocked out Mike Tyson. It happens. This guy’s one punch away from beating him. He’s 12 years younger and he’s crazy.

“He’s got mad confidence and believes in himself. I’m not saying he’ll win but anything can happen.”

Other commentators agree boxing could be the biggest loser, including Showtime’s senior fight analyst Steve Farhood.

“How much is expected of Conor McGregor,” Farhood said. “If he goes in, tries to win and fails, everyone is happy.

“He hasn’t hurt his brand at all. The whole experience of fighting the most famous athlete in the world is a positive for him. He has won already. Whereas Mayweather has much more to lose.

McGregor: ‘Gonna f**k this boy up’0:37

Boxing: Conor McGregor has a warning for the boxing world ahead of his mega fight with Floyd Mayweather.

“We don’t know what to expect from McGregor. We know Floyd, we know how he fights, we know his brilliance. We don’t know what McGregor is. To me, as a boxing guy, even if McGregor is slightly competitive, that is a victory for McGregor.”

Boxing v UFC in a battle of the most brutal brands. On the world stage in the most famous fight city of them all.

“I think Floyd, even though he may not see it this way, is fighting for more than himself,” Farhood said. “There seems to be somewhat of a disrespect for boxing and I think Floyd is fighting for that, for its image.”

The sexual harassment scandal that has led to the official resignation of founding partner Dave McClure from 500 Startups raises the question of what kind of future the firm can have without him.

It doesn’t appear 500 Startups is off to a very good start in terms of handling the situation, which became public last Friday as part of a larger New York Times story about sexual harassment in Silicon Valley.

A blog post on June 30 from CEO Christine Tsai said management changes had been made and that McClure had stepped out of daily operations as the charges came to light. Then McClure wrote a long apology that seemed to draw mix reactions.

But the stories they told about the timeline and disclosures didn’t sync with the account of partner Elizabeth Yin, according to an email obtained by TechCrunch. Yin resigned as other accusations of harassment against McClure surfaced, notably in a blog post by entrepreneur Cheryl Yeoh.

The acceleration of the story culminated in McClure officially resigning while also pleading with the larger startup community to not turn its back on 500 Startups.

Though nobody thinks 500 Startups is going to collapse overnight, the manner of McClure’s departure still raises the question of whether the firm can survive over time in the wake of this controversy.

The answer matters tremendously because of the size and reach of the firm McClure started in 2010. Its team page lists 63 people in roles ranging from the three managing partners to local and regional venture partners around the world. And the company says it has a total staff of 150. In terms of its investments, the firm has a massive footprint now, and it’s those founders who find themselves caught in the middle.

500 Startups runs a series of startup programs and accelerators, but it has also invested $ 350 million into 1,800 startups through four funds and 13 micro funds. Those companies are no doubt wondering what all this means to them in terms of reputation and association. At the same time, founders around the world will now have to carefully determine whether there is a risk in applying for one of these programs or seeking investment from the firm.

And while a great deal of money is already committed, 500 Startups is going to have to prove to future investors that it has managed to separate itself both operationally and also reputationally from McClure.

That latter will be a particular challenge, because as McClure likes to say, his value and 500 Startups’ value both lay in their vast connections and mentoring relationships.

The firm will now find out just how strong some of those ties are and how much they transcend McClure’s star power and long reach. Because, despite the size of 500 Startups, from the outside it still certainly seemed like McClure was at the center of the firm and was very much its public face.

Just last year, I interviewed him twice on stage at the Web Summit in Lisbon. He’s been on a reality TV show, is a ubiquitous presence at conferences, and is one of the most quotable figures in Silicon Valley for journalists. I first personally interviewed him when I was a reporter at the San Jose Mercury News for a story that named him one of the 10 most influential people in Silicon Valley.

In an email interview at the time, before he formally started 500 Startups, I asked him to explain what he did because he seemed to be doing so many things. At the time, this included running an investment fund for Facebook and investing like mad as an angel, thanks to a windfall from his time at PayPal.

“I aim to combine all the things I do in a comprehensive and holistic fashion that benefits startups and the people who make them grow,” he wrote.

He built 500 Startups around that philosophy and it had succeeded perhaps beyond even his wildest fantasies. As CEO, Tsai must prove that the foundation is solid enough to keep 500 Startups standing without its most important cornerstone.

‘No credibility’: Syrian govt blasts OPCW report, denies latest rebel gas attack claims https://briefnews.eu/no-credibility-syrian-govt-blasts-opcw-report-denies-latest-rebel-gas-attack-claims/ https://briefnews.eu/no-credibility-syrian-govt-blasts-opcw-report-denies-latest-rebel-gas-attack-claims/#respond Sun, 02 Jul 2017 04:28:41 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/no-credibility-syrian-govt-blasts-opcw-report-denies-latest-rebel-gas-attack-claims/ Damascus denounced a report by UN’s chemical weapons watchdog on April chemical incident in Idlib as one-sided, lacking evidence and aimed at encouraging terrorists as they lose ground. It also denied reports of deploying chlorine against rebels.

The fact-finding mission of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), tasked with investigation of the alleged use of chemical weapons in the Syrian town of Khan Sheikhoun on April 4, rejected the Syrian government’s assistance in unearthing  the facts at the site of the incident and instead relied on highly questionable testimonies provided by rebels and terrorists, the Syrian Foreign Ministry said on Saturday.

An ensuing report by the OPCW therefore “comes up with a fabricated and contrived narrative that has no credibility and cannot be accepted in any manner, because it is removed from logic and is concocted by a twisted imagination that only thinks about weaving conspiracies”, the foreign ministry argued in a statement, cited by Syria’s state SANA news agency.

According to the ministry, the findings were rooted in the claims provided by “terrorists”, who were taken to Turkey from Khan Sheikhoun and bribed to testify.

At the same time, the ministry noted that the mission turned down the proposal by Damascus to fly them on a private plane to Shayrat airbase, considered by the West as a place from which the attack originated. The allegations that the airfield was used to launch a chemical attack were repeatedly refuted by Damascus, which insists it does not possess any chemical weapons.

The ministry also called out the OPCW investigators for not caring enough to visit the actual site of the incident in Khan Sheikhoun despite the Syrian authorities’ reassurances that they are ready  to cooperate in full to make the venture possible.

It further argued that the OPCW’s way of handling the probe suggests that the organization’s initial goal was not to establish the truth but to conceal the facts, that did not fit in the western narrative. The report serves “to raise the collapsing morale of terrorist groups following the achievements made by the Syrian Arab Army and its allies on the Syrian ground,” the statement read.

Calling the presented findings misleading, the ministry urged the OPCW to come up with an impartial report into the incident free from external influences.

The OPCW report, released on Wednesday for review by the watchdog’s members, purports to confirm that sarin, a banned nerve agent, was used in the attack, that reportedly killed up to 100 civilians and injured hundreds. Although the report does not assign responsibility to any party, Washington used the publication to pin the blame on Damascus, while noting that OPCW’s Joint Investigative Mechanism  (JIM) is yet to come to the conclusion.

Three days following the incident, US fired 59 Tomahawk missiles at Shayrat airbase, inflicting casualties among Syrian military civilians and material damage.

Russia, on its part, criticized the fact-checking mission for listening to only one side of the conflict, namely, to “all kinds of the Syrian armed opposition groups and NGOs,” the Russian OPCW representative, Aleksandr Shulgin, told RT. It also cast doubt on the integrity of the findings, as the report states that the organization was unable to implement a chain of custody over the samples.

In a separate statement, the Syrian military flatly rejected reports that have started circulating on Saturday that it targeted rebels in Ain Tarma in the Eastern Ghouta area with chlorine gas. Labelling the reports baseless the military stated that they were fabricated by the rebels themselves “to justify their defeats and heavy losses whenever the Syrian Army makes progress in the area.”

It further stressed that Syria could not have mounted the attack as it had disposed of all chemical weapons and “has never used toxic chemicals since the begging of the crisis,” read statement by Syrian Amry general Command, cited by SANA.

Earlier, Failaq al-Rahman rebel group operating in the area said that over 30 of its fighters displayed the symptoms of suffocation, blaming the Syrian army of using chlorine on them.

Comey’s testimony undermined Jeff Sessions’ credibility about why he recused himself https://briefnews.eu/comeys-testimony-undermined-jeff-sessions-credibility-about-why-he-recused-himself/ https://briefnews.eu/comeys-testimony-undermined-jeff-sessions-credibility-about-why-he-recused-himself/#respond Thu, 08 Jun 2017 20:31:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/comeys-testimony-undermined-jeff-sessions-credibility-about-why-he-recused-himself/ jeff sessionsAssociated Press/Susan Walsh

It didn’t get the most attention, but one of the newsiest pieces of information to come out of Thursday’s hearing with fired FBI Director James Comey was not about President Donald Trump, but about Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

Comey gave an account of Sessions’ recusal from the Russia investigation that contradicts Sessions’ own public statement about why he recused himself.

Comey and his FBI colleagues did not tell Sessions about Trump’s improper February request for Comey to “let go” the criminal investigation of former national security adviser Michael Flynn. Comey said they kept Sessions out of the loop because they expected he would soon recuse himself from the Russia investigation. And, Comey said, he could not discuss the reasons for that expected recusal in an open session of testimony.

Comey said (emphasis mine):

“Our judgment as I recall was that he was very close to, and inevitably going to, recuse himself for a variety of reasons. We also were aware of facts that I can’t discuss in an open setting, that would make his continued engagement in a Russia-related investigation problematic. And so we were — we were confronted and, in fact, I think we had already heard that the career people were recommending that he would recuse himself, that he was not going to be in contact with Russia-related matters much longer. That turned out to be the case.”

Sessions did in fact recuse himself about two weeks later, on March 2. But at a press conference that day, Sessions said the reason for his recusal was simply that he had been involved in the 2016 presidential campaign and therefore should not oversee investigations related to that campaign.

Sessions said (emphasis mine):

“I have met with senior officials shortly after arriving here. We evaluated the rules of ethics and recusal. I have considered the issues at stake. In fact, on Monday of this week, we set a meeting with an eye to a final decision on this question. And on Monday, we set that meeting today. So this was a day that we planned to have a final discussion about handling this. I asked for their candid and honest opinion about what I should do about investigations, certain investigations. And my staff recommended recusal. They said that since I had involvement with the campaign, I should not be involved in any campaign investigation. I have studied the rules and considered their comments and evaluation. I believe those recommendations are right and just.”

Obviously, Sessions’ role as a surrogate and adviser to Trump during the 2016 campaign is not classified and is not a matter that Comey would have had to reserve for a closed session. So, Comey’s account of Sessions’ recusal directly contradicts Sessions’ own public account of why he recused himself.

So, what were the facts about the sitting Attorney General that forced his recusal that can’t be discussed in an open setting?
