If you enjoyed the whip-cracking monster introduced in Thursday’s Legacies finale, you’re going to lose your head over this news. Series creator Julie Plec tells TVLine that the headless horseman — arguably the show’s most unconventional creature yet — was just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the types of monsters visiting the Salvatore School in Season 2.

“We’ve had conversations about demigods and demons and more fantastical creatures,” Plec says. “We’ve also had conversations about creatures with historical implications and literary references. If a book has been written about a headless horseman, who’s to say that the headless horseman didn’t also exist in Malivore’s time?”

Now, I know what you’re thinking: How can we get more creatures if Malivore (along with Hope and Clarke) is gone? It’s too soon to solve that mystery, of course, but Plec promises that Legacies’ popular monster-of-the-week format will continue when the show returns for Season 2.

“It’s certainly our intention, conceptually, to have a similar structure for the next season,” she says. “Without giving away too much about how or why, we definitely like the idea that things we wouldn’t expect to exist in our little Vampire Diaries universe keep knocking on the door of the Salvatore School and causing problems.”

Your hopes for Legacies’ second season, including any monsters you’d like to see? Drop ‘em in a comment below.

Game of Thrones season 8 spoilers: MAJOR creatures from the books to make shock appearance https://briefnews.eu/game-of-thrones-season-8-spoilers-major-creatures-from-the-books-to-make-shock-appearance/ https://briefnews.eu/game-of-thrones-season-8-spoilers-major-creatures-from-the-books-to-make-shock-appearance/#respond Thu, 22 Nov 2018 17:42:04 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/game-of-thrones-season-8-spoilers-major-creatures-from-the-books-to-make-shock-appearance/

One of the most terrifying creatures in George RR Martin’s Game of Thrones books are the ice spiders.

In the books, the White Walkers ride on these huge and dangerous beasts.

That said, they haven’t been seen yet in the HBO series, but that could be about to change in season eight.

A new theory has emerged which suggests season eight might start with the introduction of these terrifying ice spiders.

They were mentioned in the A Song of Ice and Fire books by Old Nan and Samwell Tarly (played by John Bradley in the series).

“The horn blew thrice long, three long blasts means Others,” Martin writes in A Game of Thrones.

“The white walkers of the wood, the cold shadows, the monsters of the tales that made him squeak and tremble as a boy, riding their giant ice-spiders, hungry for blood.”

One of the reasons why fans haven’t seen the ice spiders in the series yet could be down to lack of budget.

Producers already have to create three dragons and a whole bunch of White Walkers, which is a huge strain on the CGI budget.

However, a few fans believe these eight-legged creatures will crawl their way into season eight.

“Personally, I’d like it to start in a similar way to the opening of the show, except its guards of a castle in the forest and they get attacked by White Walkers and ice spiders which, from what I understand, are as big as hounds,” Yocheco619 wrote on Reddit.

“Going to be so sad if we don’t get ice spiders after all that talk.”

This would be a fascinating and tense way to start season eight, and will make die-hard fans of both the show and the books very happy.

“I’d almost guarantee that’s what’s coming,” agreed another user wrote on Reddit.

It’ll also be an exciting way to begin the final season since it harkens back to the way the show started.

The very first episode of Game of Thrones started with a White Walker attack, and it would be rather fitting if the final season also began with one.

Meanwhile, other fans are speculating the return of a major character in season eight, namely Khal Drogo (Jason Momoa).

“All characters that have been burned to death/after death by fire will be reincarnated by R’hllor (god of fire/light/red god),” wrote Reddit user Cadiacman.

“You fight an army with an army, an army of burned dead people that you resurrect.”

Game of Thrones season eight returns Spring 2019, and the prequel is expected to debut a year later in 2020.

The Russian fisherman who has built a zealous fanbase with horrifying photographs of the terrifying monsters that get caught in his net is back on dry land with a fresh haul of bizarre creatures from the deep.

Roman Fedortsov, who works on a trawler based out of Murmansk in northwest Russia, has racked up hundreds of thousands of social media followers with his enlightening posts featuring some of the most peculiar beings on the planet.

This week, he delighted his legions of fans by revealing that he is back on dry land and has more fantastic freaks to share.

Once again, the photos have the power to shock viewers as the otherworldly fish have completely alien appearances.

Some of the terrifying creatures look like they got caught in Fedortsov’s net while on their way back from the set of the latest instalment of the Alien film franchise.

His photos have even inspired fan art, with admirers sending him their dramatic interpretations of his astonishing catches.

Fedortsov is from Murmansk Oblast in the northwest of Russia. Thanks to the Gulf Stream, the city boasts the only ice-free port in the Arctic. He routinely spends long periods of the year fishing around the world.

His photos have once more sparked huge reaction online with many curious about why the creatures have such unusual features. “What the heck is that thing on the end of its tentacle?” one person asked, while another simply said: “Alien.”

This Week In Trailers: Tito and the Birds, All Creatures Here Below, Unlovable, Weightless, Don’t Be a Dick About It https://briefnews.eu/this-week-in-trailers-tito-and-the-birds-all-creatures-here-below-unlovable-weightless-dont-be-a-dick-about-it/ https://briefnews.eu/this-week-in-trailers-tito-and-the-birds-all-creatures-here-below-unlovable-weightless-dont-be-a-dick-about-it/#respond Sat, 20 Oct 2018 16:33:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/this-week-in-trailers-tito-and-the-birds-all-creatures-here-below-unlovable-weightless-dont-be-a-dick-about-it/ Green Band Trailer

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: What better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising?

This week we meet some brothers who share a special bond, see how emotions can become weapons, steal a kid for fun, break the cycle of sex addiction, and meet an offspring we didn’t know we had.

Tito and the Birds

Brazilians Gustavo Steinberg, Gabriel Bitar, and André Catoto tell an animated tale that seems reminiscent of Monsters, Inc. in how it weaponizes emotions.

Tito is a shy 10-year-old boy who lives with his mother. Suddenly, an unusual epidemic starts to spread, making people sick whenever they get scared. Tito quickly discovers that the cure is somehow related to his missing father’s research on bird song. He embarks on a journey to save the world from the epidemic with his friends. Tito’s search for the antidote becomes a quest for his missing father and for his own identity.

The trailer promises an adventure that departs from the usual animated fare audience have been getting in the past couple of decades. The style seems more artistic, rough around the edges (literally), but infused with the kind of originality that kids ought to devour feverishly.

All Creatures Here Below

Directed by Collin Schiffli, and starring David Dastmalchian and Karen Gillan, the trailer is one of the best I’ve seen all month. Written by Dastmalchian himself, a heartbreaking premise manages to keep you moving along effortlessly:

Gensan (David Dastmalchian) and Ruby (Karen Gillan) struggle to thrive in the face of abject poverty. When Gensan loses his job and is forced to break the law they escape and seek refuge in Kansas City, a place Ruby’s deeply afraid of. Ruby’s indelible choices, and desire to make a family, complicate their journey to freedom.

The story beats are telegraphed nicely without giving a hint where we’re going to end. If Dastmalchian’s written work for the incredibly powerful Animals that came out a few years ago is any indication of this film’s quality, I am prepared and expecting something great.

Unlovable

A drama? A musical? John Hawkes playing the gee-tar? Give it to me. Coming from executive producers Jay & Mark Duplass, this movie seems to fit perfectly within Duplass universe. It’s a small story, with low stakes, but it leans heavily into the actors bringing something incredible to their roles. Director Suzi Yoonessi isn’t doing anything extraordinary here with how she’s capturing what’s happening before us, but the trailer shows us how we’re going to be more focused on the characters themselves.

Weightless

This trailer dramatically crushes it while being narratively devastating, all in just a minute and a half. Director Jaron Albertin masterfully mixes a vérité style in a way that feels like you’re watching both something fictional and very much real. The mix works exceptionally well as the trailer blends these two styles effortlessly. We get just enough narrative to set the table, and everything that comes after that only helps to bolster the case why this is a little film that could use some attention. The music is lovely, and the shot of the father/son in the car as they tear down a dragstrip together looks like it’s worth the price of admission alone.

Don’t Be a Dick About It

Yes, the title catches your eye, but director Ben Mullinkosson’s documentary about two brothers actually looks fascinating. What we’re exploring here is the bond that two brothers share, a topic that may seem facile at first, but that misses the point. The trailer subtly captures that unique relationship that exists between siblings. It’s sweet, tender, funny, and looks like an excellent slice-of-life portrait of brothers in arms.

Nota bene: If you have any suggestions of trailers for possible inclusion in this column, even have a trailer of your own to pitch, please let me know by sending me a note at Christopher_Stipp@yahoo.com or look me up via Twitter at @Stipp

WATCH: Harrowing moment ARMY of sea creatures comes face to face with unlucky surfer https://briefnews.eu/watch-harrowing-moment-army-of-sea-creatures-comes-face-to-face-with-unlucky-surfer/ https://briefnews.eu/watch-harrowing-moment-army-of-sea-creatures-comes-face-to-face-with-unlucky-surfer/#respond Sat, 28 Apr 2018 22:35:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/watch-harrowing-moment-army-of-sea-creatures-comes-face-to-face-with-unlucky-surfer/

A viral video featuring a surfer has circulated around the internet today on media sharing site Imgur.

It features the plight of an unlucky surfer who has an encounter with creatures from the ocean.

The sea is an unpredictable place, and day to day you never know what you might come face to face with there.

The video begins with a shot of a choppy looking blue green ocean.

A wave appears in the shot, and it moves forward towards the camera at an alarming rate.

Suddenly, out of nowhere the viewer can see something strange and unusual below the wave.

A group of dolphins, lined up in an army like formation, emerge above the wave.

Then, something else emerges: a surfer frantically paddling away from the wave.

We can already see this will not end well for the poor surfer, who is dressed in a black wetsuit.

One of the dolphins, catching up with the surfer, knocks into him.

The impact sees the surfer falling straight into the sea below, before the dolphins move away.

However, the video suggests the surfer has not been hurt too badly, because we see him clambering back on to his board at the end.

The video, posted by Imgur user shantmeg, has had almost 80,000 views since it was posted today.

“I bet a dolphin weighs quite a bit,” one user observed in a comment below.

It is believed adult bottlenose dolphins weigh between 331 and 442 pounds.

Another added that he knew someone who had been in a similarly dangerous situation.

“A colleague came to work with two black eyes once. He basically described this scene, except he was on a jetski.”

Last week, a viral video showed holidaymakers flee as they encountered something scary in the sea.

Moving at the speed of lightning, the animal shoots through the crowds, its characteristic fin visible above the water.

Then it circles an unlucky man who is standing some way away from the rest of the group.

For a terrifying moment, it looks like the man is in grave danger of being attacked by what looks like a shark.

However, the terrifying creature is actually a seal, rather than the shark it appears to be while under the water.

Earth Atlantis Releases The Kraken (And Other Assorted Underwater Creatures) https://briefnews.eu/earth-atlantis-releases-the-kraken-and-other-assorted-underwater-creatures/ https://briefnews.eu/earth-atlantis-releases-the-kraken-and-other-assorted-underwater-creatures/#respond Mon, 26 Mar 2018 13:35:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/earth-atlantis-releases-the-kraken-and-other-assorted-underwater-creatures/ earthatlantis.jpg

Undoubtedly inspired by shmup classics such as Darius and Xenon 2: Megablast, sepia-tinted underwater shooter Earth Atlantis has you hunting down giant sea monsters in a postapocalyptic future.

Earth Atlanis’ monster hunting takes places in one huge level. It is technically not an open world since progress is somewhat gated by the game’s many bosses, but it sure does feel like one.

However, this doesn’t mean that there’s a straight line between these important fights. You have to find your way through an underwater maze and fight off thousands of smaller sea creatures in fast-paced firefights. These lesser enemies also drop power-ups, which prepare your tiny vessel for the things to come.

25 giant bosses are waiting to be vanquished, and these fights can be tense, with some attacks killing you in one blow. Squids, sharks, nautili, weird big things with way too many tentacles, and other assorted creatures really do mind you trespassing in their waters.

The game’s art style is also remarkable, with a sketched, sepia-colored look that’s quite unlike anything else out there.

When it was released for the Nintendo Switch last fall, Earth Atlantis had a bit of a balance problem, with some boss fights being nigh-impossible. These issues have since been fixed, but don’t think that those bosses are pushovers now. Looking at you there, monstrous spiky octopus… thing.

You can purchase Earth Atlantis on the Nintendo Switch eshop. PS4 and Xbox One versions – along with some more balance changes – have recently been announced and will drop later this year. For more information, visit the game’s website and follow developer Pixel Perfex on Facebook and Twitter.

Jellyfish – Mystical Creatures With Great Benefits For Men https://briefnews.eu/jellyfish-mystical-creatures-with-great-benefits-for-men/ https://briefnews.eu/jellyfish-mystical-creatures-with-great-benefits-for-men/#respond Fri, 12 Jan 2018 05:24:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/jellyfish-mystical-creatures-with-great-benefits-for-men/

Nature sometimes presents us with a myriad of questions. Among the myriad of creatures, the jellyfish which are often fascinating even though we lack a lot of info about them. While the jellyfish may not stand out much like some other sea creatures, there are some interesting pieces of facts about the jellyfish, but only for those who search them out.

How Old Is The Jellyfish?

In this article written by Phillip Lamb for the conservation US, he shared a handful of rather unknown information about the jellyfish. Phillip collated these beautiful pieces of info from various research that understudied the nature of the jellyfish among other sea creatures. The jellyfish despite its distinct nature weighs about 38million tons in the upper 200 meters region of the ocean, apart from its weights in the deeper parts of the ocean. Their gelatinous body have evolved through about 500million years and is the reason they have not gone extinct. He shared more facts about their super-power abilities and their incredible transformation to adult jellyfish.

How Does The Jellyfish Affect Humanity?

What is more intriguing about the jellyfish are the many unknown ways they affect our lives as humans daily. Lamb shares some of the negative ways they can cause ecological and economic problems for humans. Nonetheless, the most intriguing benefit centers around the Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP), which is of invaluable, benefit in the world of medical research.

Tapping Into The Abundance of Nature

This article shows the extent at which we as humans can understand nature and can use it to our benefit. There are many things around us like the jellyfish that we do not ascribe any benefits but they contribute immensely to our world. It is important to look at each gift of nature with a promise of positivity in order to draw out benefits that will make our world better.

It is delighting to know that this research results shared in this article has further lead to deeper research into the nature of the jellyfish as an entity and in extension, other marine bodies. This is good, but the final utilisation of the information stands above all other things and this is why you should read the full article here.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club's Wrong Creatures is the album of the week https://briefnews.eu/black-rebel-motorcycle-clubs-wrong-creatures-is-the-album-of-the-week/ https://briefnews.eu/black-rebel-motorcycle-clubs-wrong-creatures-is-the-album-of-the-week/#respond Sun, 07 Jan 2018 18:22:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/black-rebel-motorcycle-clubs-wrong-creatures-is-the-album-of-the-week/

BLACK REBEL MOTORCYCLE CLUB – Wrong Creatures, 4/5 (Abstract Dragon)

But if that dense, reverb-heavy style is the San Francisco trio’s default setting there’s plenty of subtlety and melody elsewhere.

Celebrating their 20th anniversary this year, BRMC’s eighth album is a complex and beautifully constructed set, the six-minute Haunt a superbly atmospheric slice of gothic blues, Ninth Configuration piling layer upon layer of guitar and keyboards into a swirling and chaotic finale.

Eight albums on the Rebels are as vital and engrossing as ever.

TO KILL A KING – The Spiritual Dark Age, 3/5 (These Are My Bones)

The splendidly named Ralph Pelleymounter has a sublime rock voice: a rounded and authoritative croon that brings real power and authority to this London five-piece’s attacks on our godless society and American televangelists.

There’s real energy, too, even if their galloping style, somewhat reminiscent of American ska-rockers The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, does become a little repetitive.

In truth band and singer gel best on two sublime ballads: Cherry Fields and Oh Joy, either of them alone worth the price of admission.

TYPHOON – Offerings, 3/5 (Rollcall)

Somewhere in the midst of this Portland, Oregon, band’s fourth album – a dense, restless and largely very gloomy meditation on lost memory and identity – there’s a much shorter, better-produced record struggling to get out.

Seventy minutes long and sprawling over 14 tracks it’s beautifully played and there’s a sense of real sadness and passion in singer Kyle Morton’s melancholy voice.

But memorable melodies are in short supply and most listeners will find themselves dashing for the pause button several times before the end.

ARCELIA – Building On The Land, 3/5 (How Now)

Any trio that includes Teresa Gallagher, a voice artist for Thunderbirds and Thomas & Friends, has to be worth a listen but there’s not a single F.A.B. or “Yus, m’lady” in evidence here as Gallagher harmonises beautifully with Gavin Alexander and former Flying Picket Simon Foster.

The sound is laid-back, slightly West Coast-influenced folk with just a sprinkle of early Hall & Oates-style bucolic hokeyness on the wonderful Yellow Soup.

The opening track, Fallen, sets a melodic standard that the rest of the album doesn’t quite live up to and the lyrics are pretty wet – “the world is full of beautiful people, they just need a chance” – but the blending of voices is heavenly throughout.

What lies beneath: Melting Siberian permafrost has revealed some terrifying creatures (PHOTOS) https://briefnews.eu/what-lies-beneath-melting-siberian-permafrost-has-revealed-some-terrifying-creatures-photos/ https://briefnews.eu/what-lies-beneath-melting-siberian-permafrost-has-revealed-some-terrifying-creatures-photos/#respond Mon, 01 Jan 2018 21:05:08 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/what-lies-beneath-melting-siberian-permafrost-has-revealed-some-terrifying-creatures-photos/

The Siberian unicorn – long believed to have died out 350,000 years ago – was actually still alive as recently as 29,000 years ago, according to the analysis of a well-preserved skull found in the Pavlodar region of Kazakhstan.

Unicorn enthusiasts will be disappointed to learn that the extinct creature – also known as Elasmotherium sibiricum – had more in common with rhinos or woolly mammoths than fictional unicorns, however.

It is believed to have been up to 2 meters (6.6ft) tall, and 4.5 meters (14.7ft) in length. It weighed in at a whopping four tons, and was equipped with a large horn in the middle of its forehead.

Researchers at Tomsk State University managed to date the furry beast to around 29,000 years ago, thanks to radiocarbon-dating techniques. They believe the specimen discovered in Kazakhstan was a male but have yet to determine the cause of its death.

“Most likely, the south of Western Siberia was a refugium, where this rhino persevered the longest in comparison with the rest of its range,” said Andrey Shpanski, one of the researchers, as cited by Science Alert.

“There is another possibility that it could migrate and dwell for a while in the more southern areas.”

In addition to ancient giant viruses buried beneath the permafrost, the shaggy Siberian unicorn would have shared the taiga and tundra with a host of other strange characters.

Mammoths

The world’s best-preserved woolly mammoth, Lyuba, 42,000-years old, was found near the Yuribey River in Russia’s Ural mountains in 2007 and has toured museums around the world ever since.

Unidentified monster

This creature was discovered in the world’s third-deepest open-pit diamond mine, Udachnaya, near the town of Udachny in the Sakha Republic.

It has yet to be properly identified but speculation is rife that it may either be a dinosaur or the gnarled and mummified remains of a sable or marten. It is estimated to date back as long as 252 million years ago.

Sharp fangs indicate this monster, whatever it was, had a taste for flesh.

Siberian lions

Siberia’s permafrost also helped preserve these two extinct cave lions, which were found in the Sakha Republic in 2015. The Panthera spelaea roamed Earth during the Middle and Late Pleistocene, roughly 781,000 to 11,700 years ago.

Denisovans

Denisovans were ancient pre-humans, who differed genetically from the likes of Neanderthals, Cro-Magnons and Homo heidelbergensis. They escaped the bitter cold of Siberia by taking shelter in caves. Remains discovered in Russia’s Altai region in 2010 are believed to date back as long 110,000 years ago.

Siberian Ice Maiden

The 2,500-year-old remains of an extraordinarily well-preserved Siberian ‘Princess of Ukok’ were discovered on the Ukok Plateau in the Altay Mountains in 1993. The woman’s remains were replete with tattoos, and she was found buried with a troupe of horses and a small stash of cannabis.
