AT&T is reportedly planning a significant round of layoffs, despite receiving a large tax break and various regulatory favors such as the repeal of net neutrality rules.

Motherboard reported the pending layoffs yesterday, saying it obtained the information from AT&T internal documents and an anonymous AT&T source.

“A source at AT&T who asked to remain anonymous because they were not authorized to speak publicly told Motherboard that company leadership is planning what it’s calling a ‘geographic rationalization’ and employment ‘surplus’ reduction that will consolidate some aspects of AT&T operations in 10 major operational hubs in New York, California, Texas, New Jersey, Washington State, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Missouri, and Washington, DC,” the news site reported.

President Trump’s tariffs on rare-earth metals from China should have been a boon to the only US rare-earth minerals mine in California. But a recent Wall Street Journal article illustrates that, given the complex nature of the global economy, those tariffs have actually put the Mountain Pass mine in a tough place.

A hedge fund recently bought Mountain Pass out of bankruptcy after several companies attempted to turn a profit from it. Six months later, the WSJ wrote, Trump announced tariffs that should have helped the mine supply more domestic rare-earths at a higher price.

However, most of the world’s rare-earth processing facilities are in China, which also produces more than 90 percent of the world’s rare-earth minerals. To develop its metals as cheaply as possible, Mountain Pass has first been shipping its ore to China, where the processed metals are then sold on the world market to makers of smartphones, laptops, and magnets that go into electric car motors and giant wind turbines.

Look, as great as it is to have all these fancy laptops and smartphones around us, sometimes we can become too attached to them. And when you’re on vacation, you just have to find a way to break free from technology. That’s why a luxury resort in Bali, Indonesia is banning electronic devices from one of its swimming pools. With its “In the Moment” campaign, the five-star Ayana Resort & Spa wants to encourage its guests to unplug and fully enjoy their me-time, which it feels can be more easily accomplished if they’re not worrying about calls, checking email or what’s happening on social media.

Ayana Resort & Spa is only going to enforce these rules at its River Pool (pictured above), between the hours of 9AM to 5PM, in what it hopes will become a “haven for guests.” The Resort is making the entire process smooth for visitors by installing signage around the pool, as well as offering lockers where people can safely store their devices and pick them up after their tech-free chill session. “Our intention is to preserve who we are by valuing human connection and me-time,” Ayana Resort & Spa told Lonely Planet News. “The ethos of the River Pool is to create a place of tranquillity, where our guests can truly relax.”

As a reward for having the will power to let go of your gadgets for a few hours, the resort created a cocktail dubbed “In the Moment,” but you’ll have to make your way to the Ayana to find out what it’s all about. Maybe Jack White will have his next “human experience” concert there.

In fact, his thick and highly legible Sharpie scrawl has caused problems for the president in the past – giving away notes to his speech and making some of his private thoughts visible to the public.

Despite this, he has continued to use the Sharpie to sign executive orders, mark up drafts of important speeches, and add notes like “a teacher marking a quiz,” Guardian writer Sam Wolfson wrote in July.

What is lesser known, however, is that Trump struck up a deal with Sharpie to have these pens personalized for himself.

Toward the end of the first episode of HBO’s new four-part series done with political website Axios, Trump broke into a monologue professing his love for the Sharpie pen and disdain for the government-ordered pen that is traditionally used by US Presidents. Meanwhile, Axios reporter Jonathan Swan and its CEO, Jim VandeHei, patiently listened on the sidelines.

“I was signing documents with a very expensive pen and it didn’t write well,” Trump said. “It was a horrible pen, and it was extremely expensive,” he added, referring to the so-called government-ordered pen.

“And then I started using just a Sharpie, and I said to myself, well wait a minute, this much writes much better and this cost almost nothing.” At this point in the monologue, Trump pulled out a standard grey Sharpie pen from his draw.

“So, I called up the folks at Sharpie and I said, ‘do me a favor, can you make the pen in black? Can you make it look rich?'” he said.

According to Trump, Sharpie’s response was not only that they could they do that, but they also offered to put his signature on it. Trump proudly flashed the gold labeled pen to the camera.

Sharpie’s parent company Newell Brands did not immediately respond to Business Insider’s request for comment.

While the Russian government has refused to intervene in Church affairs, Washington, which has little to do with the Orthodox world, reiterated “its strong support” for Ukraine’s Orthodox community “to govern their religion according to their beliefs, free of outside interference.”

“We urge Church and government officials to actively promote these values in connection with the move towards the establishment of an autocephalous Ukrainian Orthodox Church,” US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement on Friday.

The American statement came a day after Metropolitan Hilarion, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) external relations department, accused the US of interfering in church affairs.

“America is interested not only in weakening Russia but also in weakening the Russian Church,” Metropolitan Hilarion told Italy’s Il Messaggerо. “We have no doubt that the United States is behind the Patriarchate of Constantinople’s actions. And the haste with which the Patriarchate of Constantinople is now taking its actions indicates that it is carrying out an order from the outside.”

Obtaining a self-governing, autocephalous status for the Ukrainian Orthodox Church is an essential part of Kiev’s ongoing policies, aimed at driving a wedge between Russian and Ukrainian peoples that have shared the same faith for over millennia.

After the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople on October 11 decided to proceed with granting autocephaly to the Church of Ukraine, and unilaterally lifted an anathema from the heads of its two non-canonical churches, ROC cut ties with Constantinople, calling the verdict of the Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople “uncanonical and unlawful.”

A smorgasbord of TV broadcasters, mobile network and internet service providers has urged the UK government to strengthen its oversight of social media companies. In a letter to The Sunday Telegraph, executives from the BBC, ITV and Channel 4, as well as Sky, BT and TalkTalk, called for a new, independent regulator to help tackle fake news, child exploitation, harassment and other growing issues online. “We do not think it is realistic or appropriate to expect internet and social media companies to make all the judgment calls about what content is and is not acceptable, without any independent oversight,” the collective wrote.

“There is an urgent need for independent scrutiny of the decisions taken, and greater transparency,” the letter continued. “This is not about censoring the internet: it is about making the most popular internet platforms safer, by ensuring there is accountability and transparency over the decisions these private companies are already taking.” The UK government is aware of the problems on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms. Last October, it introduced an Internet Safety Green Paper as part of its “digital charter” manifesto pledge. Following a consultation period, then digital secretary Matt Hancock (he’s now the health secretary) said a white paper would be introduced later in 2018.

In an interview with ITV’s Robert Peston, he added that new internet safety laws would be ready “in the next couple of years.” UK politicians have also tried to act through a fake news inquiry spearheaded by the cross-party Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee. Damian Collins, the chair of the committee, asked Facebook and Twitter last year to report back with any evidence of Russian meddling in the UK’s Brexit vote. It didn’t go well — the committee wasn’t happy with their initial responses, and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg refused to give evidence in front of MPs.

Broadcasting and communications executives believe a new, dedicated regulator would be more effective. The letter chimes with comments made by Sharon White, the head of the UK’s media and telecoms regulator Ofcom, in July. “We welcome emerging actions by the major online players, but consider that the argument for independent regulatory oversight of their activities has never been stronger,” she wrote in The Times. A government spokesperson told The Sunday Telegraph yesterday: “We have been clear that more needs to be done to tackle online harms. We are committed to further legislation.” Translation?
