Next time you sell old furniture, you can use it as a chance to add more bitcoins to your stockpile. Craigslist now gives you a way to specify in your listing whether you accept virtual currency. Blockexplorer News has noticed a new checkbox option that says “cryptocurrency ok” when you create a new ad, which does make sense for Craigslist transactions. Since the website doesn’t vet buyers or sellers, paying with virtual coins means you won’t have to worry about getting fake bills and bounced checks, and you won’t have to give a total stranger your bank details for payment.
Of course, accepting cryptocurrency comes with its own set of problems. Bitcoin, for instance, recently broke through the $ 16,000 barrier, but its value has been fluctuating for months. You could end up earning almost nothing from a sale if the value plummets — or you could end up making bank. In addition, buyers might be deterred by transfer fees that they might have to pay on top of the amount you’re asking for. In fact, Steam recently stopped accepting bitcoin for game purchases, because its value is too volatile and transaction fees are too high. Even if you never do a bitcoin transaction, at least it’s now easier to tell potential sellers that you’re willing to deal in virtual currency.

Craigslist is not only the used-car capital of the United States, it’s also one of the largest resale marketplaces for nearly everything else. Craigslist has become what the classified section of the newspaper used to be, only better. It’s a free market that is portable and can be read and shared with others who are looking for their next car.
–
But unlike the old Sunday classifieds, which relied on three lines of text and creative abbreviations to entice buyers, Craigslist offers up to 24 pictures, as much text as you care to write, and a price to advertise that can’t ever be beat: Nothing. Free. Gratis.
–
Nonetheless, Facebook is wading in and trying to take some of this business. The social-media giant is looking to offer its members the same opportunities that Craigslist already provides, but with far less uncertainty and more disclosure. Facebook launched Marketplace in October as a smartphone app for users over 18 in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand, with other countries and a desktop version launching later, and it has quickly become a serious potential rival to Craigslist. In contrast to Craigslist, which thrives on anonymity between the buyer and seller, Facebook is taking the approach of letting buyers and sellers find out a little more about each other before any in-person meeting.
–
You want to sell a Chevrolet Camaro? Create the ad on your iPhone or Android smartphone using your Facebook account, and typically you can expect a response as quickly as you might on Craigslist. But once you get that response, you get to do the one thing that Craigslist can’t offer: view the profile of your potential buyer.
–
Let’s face it, some people are best viewed from a very long distance. On Facebook, if you click on a profile and see an endless array of objectionable language or offensive political rants, chances are you can save yourself a lot of time and misery by avoiding that person altogether.
–
For car buyers, the appeal is the same. Some sellers offload their cars for nefarious reasons. When you view a seller’s Facebook profile, you can often glean certain gems of knowledge that can help you decide whether the current owner seems like a decent soul or a shady operator you’d rather not deal with.

Craigslist seems to have devolved over the past 15 years. It has become a place where, often, car dealers pretend to be individuals, and sellers use pictures of cars they don’t actually own. Countless buyers these days enjoy offering lowball prices via text, and of course there are all the scam offers to pay more than your asking price via money order from some foreign country.
–
Then there are dealers who, if they’re selling a similar car at a much higher price, will flag your ad, which then gets deleted. Problems with dealers flagging perfectly good listings, ripping off other people’s work, and posing as individuals have only become worse since Craigslist started charging dealers to post their vehicles in a segregated section of the site.
–
Sometimes you can sell your car quickly and easily on Craigslist, but you could also experience a slog through human muck in the process.
–
Can Facebook’s Marketplace improve on the experience? It depends. The kind of jerk who gives you an insulting offer on Craigslist can just as easily contact you on Marketplace and do the exact same thing. But what they can’t do after you’ve rejected their lowball offer is flag your ad for removal and then, once it’s deleted, come at you afresh with a new price that’s only slightly higher. On Marketplace, you can flag ads that are spam or irrelevant, but that’s it.
–
However, there are some disadvantages with Marketplace, particularly for sellers. If your used car doesn’t sell within seven days, you can only renew the ad up to four more times, while Craigslist lets you avoid the renewal process for up to 30 days. Craigslist also dominates Facebook when it comes to images, allowing 24 pictures versus 10 for Marketplace.
–

–
Then there is the issue of the size of your audience. Craigslist gets 50 billion page views and 60 million visitors a month, according to its fact sheet. Marketplace hasn’t reached anywhere near that level, and the inability to prominently post a used-car ad on a computer will continue to hurt Marketplace until it’s in more of a featured position on the main site. (On Facebook’s mobile app, Marketplace gets more preferential treatment at the bottom of your smartphone’s screen, alongside notifications and search tools.) But despite Craigslist’s numerical supremacy, those page views sometimes just don’t materialize into a sale.
–
Marketplace is far better when it comes to attracting friends, friends of friends, and enthusiasts who may be specifically interested in your car. When you post an ad on Marketplace, you get the option of featuring it on your home page as well as on hundreds of Facebook groups that specialize in that type of vehicle. Have an old Cadillac? You can get the ad simultaneously posted at The Brougham Society, I Love Cadillacs, and even price- and location-specific groups such as Georgia Cars $ 3000 or Less.
–
Facebook’s Marketplace appears to have the necessary traits to become a far better place for folks to buy and sell a used car, unless Craigslist figures out a way to address its anonymity issues and begins providing a feedback mechanism that allows buyers and sellers to separate the honest sellers from the scam artists.

Facebook is taking more of a community approach with Marketplace. Vehicles are listed by their geographic proximity to where you live instead of using the Craigslist method, in which the newest ad gets to be seen first regardless of distance. Mutual trust, the ability to attract the right audience, and reputation play a far greater role in the Facebook world than in Craigslist’s classic classifieds. In the future, used-car listings are going to be more about eliminating uncertainty and providing full disclosure. That’s a tall order. But right now Facebook’s Marketplace appears to offer the better service. Time will tell if Craigslist can offer more than just . . . a list.

More: Clear some clutter this weekend with these apps and sites to sell your junk
For years, Craigslist has been the premiere website for scoring a free sofa and finding an available apartment, however, there are now plenty of other free services that do an equally fine job, but with a more attractive interface and fewer spam postings. They may not offer the sheer number of listings or familiarity of Craigslist, but they do provide a new audience and additional options not offered elsewhere, whether you’re merely looking for a short-term loan or to post your ad both online and in print circulation. Here are our top picks for the seven best Craigslist alternatives for online classifieds.

Part of eBay’s Classifieds Group, Close5 is becoming one of Craigslist’s largest competitors. Like Craigslist, Close5 covers most categories: selling, renting, job opportunities, and community events. Not included under this umbrella are personal ads, so you’ll need to head somewhere else to find your Missed Connection or potential love interest. Using Close5 might be an even better option than Craigslist, thanks to the user-friendly interface. You can sort items by price and view them in photo thumbnails, which is far more helpful than having to read all the Craigslist headlines and hoping the image attached is not some boring stock photo.

Facebook Marketplace has been around for years, however, the company relaunched the feature in late 2016. You’ll need to have a Facebook profile to get started. This allows buyers and sellers to interact in the Marketplace via their Facebook profile, adding a name (and often a face) to a listing unlike the anonymous Craigslist format. Marketplace is also available via the Facebook app. Simply set your filter options and search your local Marketplace up to 100 miles from your current location. Individuals already spend nearly an hour each day on Facebook, and Marketplace only makes impulse buys that much more tempting.

Not only does Oodle act as its own classified ad service, but it also aggregates posts from eBay, ForRent.com, and other competitors to make your search experience more comprehensive. Oodle has also been a service of choice for many companies in the past who used to offer classified sections, such as Aol and The Washington Post Express. You can narrow your search by applying as many filters as you want. And yes, Oodle offer a personals section.
One thing Oodle has over Close5 is the ability to post if you’re a seeker – meaning if you’re looking to buy, rent, or procure certain services. It also boasts compatibility with social media sites, so you can link your Oodle account with your Facebook page and post status updates on the front page asking about services or specific items for sale. Moreover, connecting through Facebook attaches your face and name to an Oodle post, adding an element of trust and security not often found through Craigslist.

Letgo is one of the most user-friendly classifieds websites we’ve seen, and the mobile app — available for both Android and iPhone — is similarly straightforward and easy to use. Unlike some of the other options out there, you do unfortunately need to create an account to use Letgo. Once you’re signed up, you can simply snap a photo of the item(s) you’re trying to sell and set a price (or utilize the “negotiable” option). You can similarly shop for items available on the site or app with the basic search tool and filtering options. The company recently announced it had raised more than $ 175 million to bolster its presence, so expect to see Letgo gain ground on Craigslist in the next few years.

Recycler does exactly what its name suggests: help buyers and sellers swap items, using the site as the medium of communication. While you can also post home rentals, it seems more popular among sellers looking to get rid of used items. Recycler offers listings in most major cities in the United States – such as Atlanta, Boston, and Miami – but the site is rather useless if you’re not willing to trek to the nearest listed metropolis. Developers initially founded the site on the idea of exchanging goods and services instead of money, and although that component is still a major hallmark of the service, it’s expanded to include money offerings as the primary model for exchange. Additionally, Recycler pairs with a network of print publications dispersed throughout the country, allowing you to place the same ad online as in print circulation. This list of available publications is fairly limited, but ad exposure is still ad exposure.

Back on the minimalist front, Hoobly is a basic classified ads site that is helpful for those who want just snippets of photos to accommodate their search. The site can scour its listings from around the world or country-specific, and shows you each headline with a small excerpt to give you an idea of what the ad entails. Unlike Craigslist, Hoobly users need to register their email addresses before posting, rather than simply responding to a verification email prior to publishing. This could, however, help with cutting out the spam. The site doesn’t have a section for personals like Craigslist, but it does include job listings and property rentals, in addition to a swath of popular sale categories that range from electronics to jewelry. Though finding jobs and products in your particular city can be difficult — the site can only filter results down to U.S. states with available listings — the service is more than suitable for finding specific items and opening doors outside your region, or even the world.

Like Letgo, OfferUp is relatively new and has a helpful app available for both Android and iPhone. One of our favorite features is the haggle option, allowing you to negotiate a lower price with a seller. You can also keep an eye on specific items with the convenient “watch” feature. If an item hasn’t sold in a few days, you might feel more comfortable asking someone to lower the price. OfferUp also allows users to rate one another using a basic five-star system, enabling individuals to buy and sell more confidently.

Before hybrid powertrains invaded the segment, the traditional supercar formula was high horsepower plus low weight equal fast lap times multiplied by evil laughs of joy. A couple of the best to maintain that basic equation are the Pagani Huayra BC, which weighs a claimed 2685 pounds, and the Hennessey Venom GT, which weighs 2743 pounds. But those are hefty compared with one of the most exclusive Lamborghinis of this or any decade, the Sesto Elemento. An exercise in carbon technology and power-to-weight-ratio supremacy, the Sesto weighs a claimed 2202 pounds (Lamborghini tried to keep it below 1000 kilograms and at 999 it barely achieves that goal) and was fitted with a V-10 engine.
–
The Sesto debuted in 2010 as a concept car and was later produced in a limited run of 20 examples. This week in Seattle, one popped up on Craigslist, of all places, for a listed price of $ 4,500,000. The post is extremely limited on info, but it claims that it is VIN No. 3 and that it only has 118 miles on it. Luxury goods site JamesEdition, where there was another Elemento listed in the U.K. for $ 2.8 million, might have been a more appropriate place to drop a collectible car like this. That the car appeared on Craigslist—right between more typical ads on the site listing a $ 2800 1998 Honda Civic and a $ 10,500 modified 2000 Jeep Wrangler TJ—made us extremely skeptical; however, the photos don’t seem to appear anywhere else on the World Wide Web, and the seller didn’t run for cover when the press came calling.

According to the broker who says he listed the car on behalf of a client, he only put it up on Craigslist because it was simple. “[We] chose Craigslist because it was easy and took a mere five minutes to create the ad,” he said in an email. “The response has been overwhelming … was not anticipating for Craigslist to have tens of people looking to purchase such a vehicle. It was more of a joke at first, but then inquiries from potential buyers came flooding in.” The broker also said that there’s plenty of room in the price for negotiation.

The featherweight supercar was so special at its debut because it uses a technology called forged composite carbon fiber, which is basically a bunch of carbon-fiber flakes heat pressed together rather than woven like carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic. Both functional and aesthetically intriguing, it formed the entire body of the car and inspired its name, which means “sixth element.” According to Lamborghini, the low weight paired with the claimed 570 horsepower at 8000 rpm and 398 lb-ft at 6500 rpm made for a claimed zero-to-62-mph time of only 2.5 seconds. That would be quicker than the 2016 Lamborghini Aventador LP750-4 Superveloce we tested just last year.

Before you go looking for a loan, be aware that the Sesto is not street legal and can’t be licensed for road use anywhere in the United States.
