New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has confirmed the truck attack that killed eight people is a terrorist attack, and Governor Andrew Cuomo told reporters there was no indication of a wider plot.

New York Police Commissioner James O’Neill called the incident “a tragedy of the widest magnitude.”

Mayor de Blasio called the attack a “cowardly act of terror” and said the city was enduring a “painful day.”

“We know that this action was intended to break our spirit, but we also know New Yorkers are strong,” de Blasio said. “Our spirit will never be moved by an act of violence, and act of terror.”

Governor Cuomo said that the suspect is a “lone wolf” and that there is “no evidence to suggest a wider plot or a wider scheme.”

He added that there will be more police “everywhere,” but said that it was not because there is any evidence there will be “any additional threat,” but said that they were being deployed “out of vigilance and out of caution.”

Commissioner O’Neil said that the 29-year-old suspect exited the vehicle “brandishing two handguns” and was shot by a nearby police officer in the abdomen. He said that a paintball gun and a pellet gun were recovered at the scene.

President Donald Trump tweeted, “In NYC, looks like another attack by a very sick and deranged person. Law enforcement is following this closely. NOT IN THE U.S.A.!”

An estimated several hundred white nationalists descended on the University of Virginia’s campus in Charlottesville on Friday night for an impromptu torchlit rally.

The demonstration, which took place ahead of the alt-right Unite The Right event in the city’s Emancipation Park on Saturday, led to violent exchanges with counter-protesters on the university grounds.

The protest came amid an ongoing dispute over the proposed removal of the statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee in Emancipation Park, previously known as Lee Park.

Videos posted on social media by reporters at the scene showed Tiki torch-wielding marchers chanting, “End immigration,” “One people, one nation,” and “Blood and soil.” (‘Blood and soil’ is a Nazi-linked ideology based on ethnic descent (blood) and territory (soil)).

Other chants included, “You will not replace us” and “White lives matter.”

A smaller group of counter-protesters met the march at Jefferson Statue on campus, circling the monument and linking arms, according to the local Cavalier Daily.

They were then surrounded by the chanting white nationalists, before fighting broke out.

Police reportedly separated the two groups, having declared unlawful assembly.

Far-right figurehead Richard Spencer — who attended UVA — appeared to confirm via Twitter that the white nationalists had intentionally surrounded the counter-protesters.

There are also multiple reports of pepper spray being used. A local left-wing group posted pictures appearing to show one of the white nationalists deploying pepper spray against the counter-protesters.

A reporter for Huffington Post also said that anti-fascist and Black Lives Matter protesters had been pepper-sprayed. The reporter and other media outlets said journalists and residents had been threatened by some of the marchers.

Alex Spratley, a second-year college student who was among the counter-protesters, told the Cavalier Daily: “This is not something that we thought would ever happen, that we would ever see in our lifetime. It’s wild.”

UVA President Teresa A. Sullivan issued a statement in the early hours of Saturday morning condemning the march as “disturbing and unacceptable.”

“I am deeply saddened and disturbed by the hateful behavior displayed by torch-bearing protestors that marched on our Grounds this evening. I strongly condemn the unprovoked assault on members of our community, including University personnel who were attempting to maintain order,” Sullivan said.

“Law enforcement continues to investigate the incident, and it is my hope that any individuals responsible for criminal acts are held accountable. The violence displayed on Grounds is intolerable and is entirely inconsistent with the University’s values.”

Charlottesville Mayor Mike Signer also issued a strong-worded statement of condemnation:

I have seen tonight the images of torches on the Grounds of the University of Virginia. When I think of torches, I want to think of the Statue of Liberty. When I think of candlelight, I want to think of prayer vigils. Today, in 2017, we are instead seeing a cowardly parade of hatred, bigotry, racism, and intolerance march down the lawns of the architect of our Bill of Rights.

Everyone has a right under the First Amendment to express their opinion peaceably, so here’s mine: not only as the Mayor of Charlottesville, but as a UVA faculty member and alumnus, I am beyond disgusted by this unsanctioned and despicable display of visual intimidation on a college campus.

Prior to Friday night’s protest, VA Sen. Mark Warner, a Democrat, told the white nationalists to leave Charlottesville.

In a statement issued prior to Friday night’s events, Virginia’s Gov. Terry McAuliffe said that “personnel from Virginia’s National Guard were standing by to respond if needed” ahead of Saturday’s rally.

Charlottesville was also the scene of a smaller white nationalist rally in May.

Ralph Northam, Virginia’s lieutenant governor and the Democratic nominee for governor, bemoaned that Charlottesville was once again the scene of a white supremacist rally.

“White supremacists have descended upon Charlottesville again to evoke a reaction as ugly and violent as their beliefs,” he said. “Just as they did before, I am urging Virginians to deny them the satisfaction.”

Ed Gillespie, the Republican candidate for governor, also condemned the protest, while praising the police response.

France has been shocked by an act of vandalism at a memorial site, where a plaque bearing the names of victims of the Nazis during World War II, 44 children among them, was broken off and stolen in the city of Lyon.

The desecrated memorial was dedicated to the Jewish children of Izieu, in eastern France, as well as their seven adult supervisors, who were deported from a children’s home near Lyon to the Nazi camp in Auschwitz in 1944. Most of them died in gas chambers there. 

“To violate the memory of deportation is a shameful and cowardly act that will not go unpunished,” the Elysee Palace said in a statement Tuesday. Calling the act a “profanation of unprecedented magnitude,” it added that the perpetrators would be sought and brought to justice “with utmost determination.”

The disturbing discovery was made Monday in a public garden at the Resistance and Deportation History Center in Lyon. The plaque was broken and removed from its base, authorities say.

The local head of the association of the Deported Jewish Children of France, Jean Levy, said the desecration was “an anti-Semitic act against the French Republic.”

“We are all the more broken because we have just celebrated 30 years since the trial of Klaus Barbie, the person in charge of Izieu deportations,” he said, as quoted by local media. “We will not give up and [we will] rebuild the memorial,” he added.

Known as the “Butcher of Lyon,” former local Gestapo chief Barbie went on trial in 1987 for raids against Jewish children and other crimes against humanity in France during World War II. He was sentenced to life the same year and died in a French prison four years later.

Earlier this year, the Jewish community in France was also shocked and angered after an ancestral Jewish cemetery in the commune of Waldwisse in northeast France was damaged. On that occasion, vandals tipped over and smashed some 40 headstones at the 18-century graveyard.

The powerful explosion that rocked a shopping center in the Colombian capital’s tourist district has been called a terrorist attack by Bogota’s mayor. At least three women, including a French volunteer, died in the blast. Several others were seriously injured.

Bogota Mayor Enrique Peñalosa has tweeted that three women were killed in the “bomb” blast, and one more remains in serious condition. Peñalosa has called the explosion a “cowardly terrorist attack.” 

The explosion targeted the Centro Andino Mall in the Zona Rosa neighborhood, which is regarded as one of the most luxurious upper-class and tourist districts in Latin America. The blast occurred in the women’s restroom on the mall’s second floor.

One of the victims has been identified as a 23-year-old French woman who had spent six months volunteering in Colombia. The woman, who is said to have worked in a poor Colombian neighborhood, was reportedly killed days before her planned return to France.

The other two victims, who have been identified in a hospital statement as a 31-year-old woman and a 27-year-old woman, are believed to be Colombian. The statement said one woman remains in critical condition.

Earlier, extremely graphic images of seriously injured women and a video showing a smoke-filled mall corridor appeared on social media.

RT Spanish earlier cited police as confirming at least 11 injuries were caused by the blast.

Ambulances and fire engines are working at the scene, and the entire mall has reportedly been evacuated.

Whistleblower Edward Snowden offered an impassioned argument against terrorism being used as a pretext for introducing mass surveillance in a video-linked speech to a migration conference on Tuesday night.

Speaking to the Estoril conference on global migration in Portugal via video from Moscow, where he has lived for the past four years after being granted asylum by Russia in 2013, Snowden argued that terrorists do not possess the power to destroy people’s rights or weaken a society’s strength. That only happens when those in a position of power use extremists as an excuse to create laws that encroach on people’s liberties, he said.

“Terrorists don’t hate us for our freedom, they don’t even know what our freedoms are… Terrorists are incapable of destroying our rights or diminishing our society they lack the strength – only we can do that.”

“Rights are lost by cowardly laws that are passed in moments of panic. Rights are lost to the cringing complicity of leaders who fear the loss of their office more than the loss of our liberties.”

Snowden argued that governments aren’t using mass surveillance tools to counter terrorism, rather they are being used to discover journalist’s sources, specifically “journalists who have written stories that were embarrassing to the government.”

The whistleblower further argued that the best way to defeat terrorist ideologies is to allow them to get a full public airing. “The way to discredit terrorist ideas is not by censoring them from public spaces… these ideas are not attractive, these ideas grow best in the dark… Drag it out onto the stage of the world, show people why it is wrong and why we can do better.”

The former NSA contractor made a similar argument when answering a question from the floor which asked him to discuss recent comments from UK Prime Minister Theresa May which made the case for regulating the internet to combat terrorism.

Snowden noted that the Investigatory Powers Act – which the UK parliament passed last year and which Snowden described as “the most extreme surveillance law in the history of the western world” – was being justified as a means of rooting out terrorists.

Snowden said he understood the impulse, but said that there is no public evidence that these policies are effective. On the contrary, there is clear evidence that they cause harm to the public, he said.

“We have seen people fall on blacklists. We have seen, again and again throughout history, political parties be hamstrung, to face resistance, be silenced by governments because of their politics, their beliefs, their ideologies, which over time are always derived from what state security agencies say is a necessary effort to protect the nation.”

“I’m not going to so far to say this is sort of an evil plan on behalf of the United Kingdom or any other nation,” Snowden said. “But we need to focus on one thing, the need for speech, access to free speech, free association, a free press, the ability to pick up a phone and be able to dial someone that you love without worrying about what that looks like in government database somewhere, how that will be reviewed 10 years from now when you get on a politician’s bad side. This is the foundation of any free society.”
