Last Christmas Rian Johnson’s Star Wars The Last Jedi hit cinemas and completely divided fans.
Many felt what was set up by JJ Abrams in The Force Awakens wasn’t handled well from Rey’s parents reveal to Snoke’s untimely death.
Five months later and Solo hit cinemas taking less than $ 400 million at the worldwide box office, despite previous instalments hitting $ 1 billion.
Since this misfire, it looks like Disney and Lucasfilm have been reassessing their mass plans for the Star Wars universe moving forward.
With Abrams back in the director’s chair for Star Wars Episode IX, perhaps a nostalgic return to the form of what worked in The Force Awakens is around the corner?
Well, now it looks like the studios have taken the fan response and lack of audience from Solo on board, as a new report alludes.
According to Variety, Abrams is “currently working on Star Wars: Episode IX, which has been billed as a course correction at Lucasfilm after spinoff films like Solo failed to meet the label’s high commercial expectations.”
Last year Rey star Daisy Ridley revealed she had been in tears over the news of Abrams’ return.
According to Rolling Stone, the 26-year-old said: “Everyone was saying it was going to be Rian [Johnson, The Last Jedi director] and everything, so I was genuinely quite surprised.
“And was like ‘Oh my god!’ and I started crying immediately with three people in the office.
“And they were like, ‘What the f*** just happened?’ So I emailed J.J. saying, ‘Oh my god I am crying.’
“And he goes, ‘Oh my god, me too.’ And then we had a conversation a few days later and we stay in touch. But we stayed in touch the whole time anyway.”
What exactly Abrams has in store for the sequel trilogy finale is anyone’s guess.
However, it does also mark the end of the Skywalker saga too.
So hopefully there will be some nods to both the prequel and original trilogies too.
Star Wars: Episode IX is released in UK cinemas on December 19, 2019.
A massive alligator, nicknamed Chubbs, has once again been spotted in Florida roaming along the clean-cut grass and shocking visitors at the Buffalo Creek Golf Course in Palmetto.
Strolling the course and casually enjoying the warmth of sunlight, the massive 15-foot reptile was not shy of cameras. While the enormous predator instilled fears in those who happened to come across it for the first time on Saturday, Chubbs has already become somewhat of a celebrity figure for local golfers, after it was first spotted at Buffalo Creek back in 2016.
Maintaining his celebrity status, the king-sized gator who has managed to stay alive over the years has been repeatedly captured roaming his domain and providing a thrilling experience for those lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the crocodilian.
The management of Buffalo Creek Golf Course is well aware of Chubbs’ residential status and remain calm about it, as long as it keeps its distance from their clients.

Their demands — at a July 2018 protest — might sound modest in many countries that have long allowed abortion. But the Dominican Republic is one of six Central American and Caribbean countries, including El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua and Suriname, and among 26 nations globally, with a total ban on abortion, according to the Guttmacher Institute. Women who get an abortion face up to three years in prison and health professionals who perform or assist in abortions could receive between four and 10 years of jail time. Now, the Dominican Republic is taking steps to break with its neighbors, emerging as the latest test for abortion rights in a notoriously conservative region.
The country’s Congress will vote on a bill in January that could determine whether the Dominican Republic can decriminalize abortion in select cases. The country’s president, Danilo Medina, has argued since 2014 for allowing abortions in cases of a malformed fetus, when a woman’s life is at risk or when the pregnancy is the result of rape. A majority of the Dominican Republic now appears to support what has come to be called the Tres Causales (three reasons) movement. A poll conducted by Untold Research in June found that 79 percent of Dominicans agree that the country’s current laws should allow abortion when the mother’s life is at risk, 76 percent when the life of the fetus is at risk and 67 percent when it’s a case of rape or incest. Calls for change are growing increasingly public, through street protests like the one in July. And the first cracks are appearing even within the Catholic Church, where one priest has supported the movement despite staunch opposition from the institution.
We must decriminalize abortion in January.
Natalia Mármol, Dominican women’s rights activist
These winds of change come amid a broader shift in Latin America. Chile ended a total ban on abortions in 2017, to allow cases where a woman’s life is at risk. Colombia now allows abortions to save a woman’s life and preserve her physical and mental health. Uruguay permits abortion in similar situations, or if it places undue economic burden on the mother. But neither the region nor the Dominican Republic is immune from setbacks. In August, Argentina voted against legalizing abortions in a referendum. The Dominican Republic’s Congress had briefly lifted the abortion ban in all three circumstances in 2014, following Medina’s appeal, but two conservative organizations quickly filed a constitutional claim against the changed law. The lift on the ban was ruled unconstitutional and the original penal code, in place since 1884, went back into effect. Congress will again vote on whether to revise the abortion ban in January.
“We must decriminalize abortion in January,” says Natalia Mármol, a women’s rights activist in the Dominican Republic. “This could be the last chance to change the penal code.”
It was the death of 16-year-old Dominican girl Rosaura Almonte in 2012 that first stirred the Tres Causales movement. Almonte was refused chemotherapy for leukemia for three weeks as doctors debated how the treatment would impact the fetus inside her and possibly violate the country’s abortion law. Treated too late, Almonte died from complications related to her disease, rattling the country. “When society says the life of a fetus is more important than the life of a woman, it sends a message that women’s lives are not valuable,” says Paula Avila-Guillen, a human rights expert and director of Latin America Initiatives for the Women’s Equality Center in New York, who’s been tracking Tres Causales.
In 2015, the maternal mortality rate in the Dominican Republic was 92 per 100,000 live births — more than six times the rate of 14 in the U.S., according to the World Health Organization. The Dominican Republic Medical Association and the Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics estimates that nearly 20 percent of the country’s total maternal deaths are due to unsafe abortions. The country also has the highest teenage pregnancy rate in Latin America.

Tres Causales is also about recognizing the disparity in access to safe abortions, says Avila-Guillen. “Privileged women know where to get [safe] abortions,” she says. “They survive, while women in dire situations — poor women and rape victims — do not.” The movement to legalize abortions in at least three scenarios still faces challenges in a country where 69 percent of the population identifies as Catholic — practicing or not.
The country’s Catholic Church is staunchly opposed to abortion under any circumstances. One Jesuit priest, Father Mario Serrano Marte of Dajabón, broke ranks on July 12, when he said on Twitter that he views Tres Causales as “a just cause that I support and promote.” But other Catholic leaders have criticized him. “The science is clear that life begins at conception,” Bishop Jesús Castro Marte, auxiliary bishop of Santo Domingo Norte, told Dominican newspaper Diario Libre.
These sharpening differences are why the coming weeks and months before the January vote are critical for the abortion rights movement, says Cinthya Amanecer Velasco Botello, executive director of the Collective for Women and Health in the Dominican Republic. But the country as a whole, she says, is increasingly clear about what it wants. “Dominican society is pushing for the decriminalization [of abortion],” says Botello. “Conservatives and religious politicians are the only people in the way of achieving these human rights.”
That’s why most activists in the country believe their cause will prevail, despite the resistance among Catholics. “I don’t think [lawmakers] would risk the political implications [of not decriminalizing abortion],” says Mármol. There are lives at stake — lives that matter to most Dominicans.

Today, Duolingo’s Hindi language course for English speakers officially launched on its website. The course is not yet available on iOS or Android apps, but it will be making its way to these devices in the future. The course has been in development for over a year; Kanan Gupta is the lead creator.
Hindi is the second-most spoken language around the world, according to The Washington Post, with almost 600 million speakers as of 2015. India is one of Duolingo’s top 10 markets worldwide, with 10.1 million domestic users, so launching a Hindi course makes sense for the company. There are roughly 8.6 million Hindi speakers learning English through Duolingo. Over 154,000 people have signed up to be notified when a Hindi-language course for English users is available on the service.
This is clearly going to be popular among Duolingo’s user base. Many of India’s denizens (and the Indian diaspora around the world) don’t speak Hindi, though, so Duolingo is already working on English courses for Bengali, Punjabi, Telugu and Tamil speakers. There are currently no courses for English speakers to learn other Indian languages in the works, but you can volunteer to help develop one at Duolingo’s Incubator.

TURNBERRY/GLASGOW, Scotland (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump was holed up at his golf course on the western coast of Scotland on Saturday ahead of a summit with Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin that could be overshadowed by accusations Russians meddled in the U.S. 2016 election.
In an uproarious trip to Europe, Trump harangued members of the NATO military alliance, scolded Germany for its dependence on Russian energy, and shocked Britain by publicly criticizing Prime Minister Theresa May’s Brexit strategy.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

David Fincher‘s love of shooting many, many takes of one scene until he gets what he wants is well-documented. While discussing his Netflix serial killer series Mindhunter, Fincher revealed he shot one nine-minute scene a whopping 75 times.
Filmmaker David Fincher knows what he wants, and he’ll shoot as many takes as it takes to make his vision a reality. “[David] Fincher is meticulous,” John Carroll Lynch, who co-starred in Zodiac, once revealed. “He’s after something. And it takes him 50 takes to get it.” A producer on Gone Girl also stated that Fincher was shooting up to 50 takes per scene for that film as well. And now it looks like Fincher has out-done his 50-take-streak. During a FYC event for the Netflix series Mindhunter, Fincher revealed (via IndieWire) that he shot 75 takes of one nine-minute scene.
The scene in question involves actor Happy Anderson playing serial killer Jerry Brudos, and Fincher explained how he constructed the scene, using three cameras running at once:
“The scene with Happy [Anderson] was 11 pages. We had three cameras outside the cage, and we’d do a nine-and-a-half-minute take. Then I’d walk in with a yellow pad [filled] with single-spaced notes: [to Mindhunter star Jonathan Groff] ‘OK, that’s a joke, you can’t toss that off. And this? This is a statement. Make sure that’s a statement.’ And Jonathan would be there going, ‘OK, OK.’ [nodding] Then we’d do another nine-minute take and he’d do all that stuff [I asked], and I’d go to Holt and go over four pages of notes with him. And Happy was like, ‘What? We’re really going to do this [every time]?’…We didn’t have a break, well we broke for lunch — I would say we did it 75 times in the day.”
During the course of the conversation, Fincher also revealed that he deliberately isolated actor Cameron Britton, who turns in one of the show’s best performances as serial killer Ed Kemper. “One of the things that was critical [came to me] when we did a read-through of the first three episodes,” the director said. “It became really obvious coming out of the first read-through that: ‘Make sure Cameron doesn’t talk to anyone. He can’t fraternize [with anyone]. I don’t want this to be a social thing. He has to literally come from Pluto and be in the show.’ He can’t be indoctrinated into what anyone else is up to. It has to be that this guy shows up, he’s got all the time in the world — 13 life sentences — and he’s going to tell you what you want to know. During the read-through, it was [clear] that if we can get that on film, we’re going to be fine.”
This may all sound a bit extreme, but Fincher continuously turns in work that gets people’s attention. In other words, he knows what he’s doing, even if he seems a bit nuts when doing it.
Mindhunter season 2 is currently in production.

Helsinki University in Finland has launched a course on artificial intelligence — one that’s completely free and open to everyone around the world. Unlike Carnegie Mellon’s new undergrad degree in AI, which the institution created to train future experts in the field, Helsinki’s offering is more of a beginner course for those who want to know more about it. A lot of tech giants like Google now have divisions working on artificial intelligence projects, and even whole non-tech industries already depend on AI for various tasks. But as Janina Fagerlund from the university’s project partner (tech strategy firm Reaktor) said, people might not know that their lives are already affected by AI every day.
Fagerlund mentioned the use of AI in the food industry to sort produce and other items at facilities as an example. And while you know that Facebook uses AI for facial recognition, a lot of people might not. Indeed, Helsinki’s course focuses on the basics, starting with defining what AI is and explaining how it can solve problems. The materials also discuss how AI is already used in the real world, and in the second part of the course, they explain how machine learning works and what neural networks are. It will apparently take you about 30 hours to complete the course, which can earn you two academic credits through the Open University if you’re from Finland. If you live elsewhere, you’ll just have to make do with a certificate you can display on LinkedIn.
