The United States, one of the world’s richest and most developed countries, has met the World Health organization’s criteria to be listed as a country with circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Tuesday.
The US now joins the ranks of around 30 other polio outbreak countries, largely low- and middle-income, including Ethiopia, Mozambique, Somalia, and Yemen. Notably, the list includes just two other high-income countries—the United Kingdom and Israel—which have detected the circulation of a poliovirus strain genetically linked to the one spreading in the US.
Specifically, the US met the criteria for WHO’s list by documenting a patient with vaccine-derived poliovirus and having at least one environmental sample of vaccine-derived poliovirus. In July, health officials in New York’s Rockland County reported a case of paralytic polio in an unvaccinated resident who had not recently traveled. Since then, New York officials and the CDC surveilled the spread of the virus in wastewater, finding 57 positive samples from four New York counties and New York City. The dates of the positive samples span from April to a recent sampling in August.

Germany has pledged €67 billion ($ 66.9 billion) in funding to assist utility companies struggling to deal with surging energy prices, the Financial Times reported Tuesday, underscoring concerns in Europe about insolvencies potentially rippling throughout the region.
Germany's state development bank KfW will be able to deploy billions of euros in loan guarantees and liquidity assistance to energy companies, officials told the FT. The money will be redeployed from a COVID-19 bailout fund that was established in 2020 to help companies stave off insolvencies as lockdown mandates forced them to halt business activities.
European gas importers have been forced to pay higher prices as Russia reduces its natural gas flows into Europe. The Kremlin recently said Russia will not restart flows of gas supplies through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline until the "collective West" lifts sanctions against Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine. The Nord Stream 1 pipeline runs under the Baltic Sea into northeastern Germany.
Germany has already made moves in aiding the energy sector. German utility giant Uniper was granted a government bailout now totaling €19 billion, the FT reported, and gas importer VNG asked for government help last week.
Earlier this month, Sweden and Finland, according to Bloomberg, created €33 billion in emergency liquidity facilities to aid struggling utility companies navigating turbulent power markets.
European Union energy ministers will hold an emergency meeting on September 30 as part of steps to approve proposals designed to drag down surging gas and power prices sweeping throughout the region.

Internet giants like Google might breathe a little easier in Europe… at least, for now. The EU has called off January 21st negotiations for a final vote on the controversial Copyright Directive after 11 countries, including Germany, Italy and the Netherlands, said they wouldn’t support the latest version of the proposal. European Parliament Member Julia Reda noted that most of these countries (Croatia and Portugal are exceptions) have previously argued that the disputed Articles 11 and 13 of the directive didn’t do enough to protect users’ rights, and this may have played at least some part in their opposition.
Critics have regularly described Article 11 as a “link tax,” since it gave companies the right to charge sites like Google for merely including content with links, even if it’s just a brief snippet to show the user what they’re seeing. Article 13, meanwhile, has raised concerns that internet companies would be virtually required to implement copyright filters and wouldn’t have enough protections for fair use rights.
This doesn’t mean that the Copyright Directive is gone, or that Articles 11 and 13 will go away. However, it may need a significant overhaul if it’s going to come to a vote. That, in turn, could delay any implementation. European elections are scheduled for May, just two months after the originally planned March vote on the Directive — there isn’t much room to breathe if there’s a significant setback.

Tesla’s Model 3 design studio is now open for everyone in left-hand drive European countries, and that means it’s now taking orders from the public in those markets. The automaker started displaying the new vehicle in European showrooms in November 2018, hinting at its impending release. While it began taking orders from reservation holders in December, only those who plunked down a $ 1,000 reservation fee were given access to the design studio. Now, anybody can visit Tesla’s website and go through the customization process to see how much the set-up they want will cost.
Model 3 configurator is now open to left-hand drive countries in Europe. Design your Model 3
— Tesla (@Tesla) January 4, 2019
Based on the design studio options, Tesla is only taking orders for the Long Range Battery and Performance versions of Model 3 for now — the more affordable Mid-Range Battery vehicle is nowhere to be found. The car’s pricing varies per region, so how much interested customers will have to earmark for the purchase depends on their location. In France, for instance, a basic Long Range Battery version without Enhanced Autopilot is priced at €53,500 (US$ 61,000), whereas it costs €59,600 (US$ 68,000) in Italy. The same model will set Americans back $ 42,950 after savings.
Interested customers in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Luxemburg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland can take the customization process for a spin right here. While we can’t see an option for the country, Tesla has also started taking orders from the public in China, according to Electrek.

The past year was full of events that inevitably split the global geopolitical space into two camps: those who still support using US currency as a universal financial tool, and those who are turning their back on the greenback.
Global tensions caused by economic sanctions and trade conflicts triggered by Washington have forced targeted countries to take a fresh look at alternative payment systems currently dominated by the US dollar.
RT has taken a deeper look into the recent phenomena of de-dollarization, summing up which countries have taken steps towards eliminating their reliance on the greenback, and the reasons behind their decision.
The ongoing trade conflict between the United States and China, as well as sanctions against Beijing’s biggest trading partners have forced China to take steps towards relieving the dollar dependence of the world’s second-largest economy.
In Beijing’s signature soft-power style, the government hasn’t made any loud announcements on the issue. However, the People’s Bank of China has been regularly reducing the country’s share of US Treasuries. Still the number-one foreign holder of the US sovereign debt, China has cut its share to the lowest level since May 2017.
Moreover, instead of promptly dumping the greenback, China is trying to internationalize its own currency, the yuan, which was included in the IMF basket alongside the US dollar, the Japanese yen, the euro, and the British pound. Beijing has recently made several steps towards strengthening the yuan, including accumulating gold reserves, launching yuan-priced crude futures, and using the currency in trade with international partners.

China & Japan lead global dumping of US sovereign debt
As part of its ambitious Belt and Road Initiative, China is planning to introduce swap facilities in participating countries to promote the use of the yuan. Moreover, the country is actively pushing for a free-trade agreement called the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), which will include the countries of Southeast Asia. The trade pact could easily replace the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), the proposed multi-national trade deal which was torn up by US President Donald Trump shortly after he took office. RCEP includes 16 country signatories and the potential pact is expected to form a union of nearly 3.4 billion people based on a combined $ 49.5 trillion economy, which accounts for nearly 40 percent of the world’s GDP.
Ranked the world’s sixth-largest economy, India is one of the biggest merchandise importers. It’s not surprising that the country is directly affected by most global geopolitical conflicts and is significantly impacted by sanctions applied to its trading partners.

Russia, India & Iran want to create alternative trade route to Suez Canal – report
Earlier this year, Delhi switched to ruble payments on supplies of Russian S-400 air-defense systems as a result of US economic penalties introduced against Moscow. The country also had to switch to the rupee in purchases of Iranian crude after Washington reinstituted sanctions against Tehran. In December, India and the United Arab Emirates sealed a currency-swap agreement to boost trade and investment without the involvement of a third currency.
Taking into account that India is the third-largest country by purchasing power parity, steps of this kind could considerably diminish the role of the greenback in global trading.
Earlier this year, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced plans to end the US dollar monopoly via a new policy that is aimed at non-dollar trading with the country’s international partners. Later, Turkey’s leader announced that Ankara is preparing to conduct trade through national currencies with China, Russia and Ukraine. Turkey also discussed a possible replacement of the US dollar with national currencies in trade transactions with Iran.

‘Turkey not America’: Erdogan continues crackdown on US dollar in favor of lira
The move was prompted by political and economic reasons. Relations between Ankara and Washington have been deteriorating since the failed military coup in the country to oust President Erdogan in 2016. It’s been reported that Erdogan suspects US involvement in the uprising and accuses Washington of harboring exiled cleric Fethullah Gulen, whom Ankara blames for masterminding the coup.
The Turkish economy sank after Washington introduced economic sanctions over the arrest of US evangelical pastor Andrew Brunson on terrorism charges in relation to the uprising.
Erdogan has repeatedly slammed Washington for unleashing a global trade war, sanctioning Turkey and trying to isolate Iran. The NATO member’s decision to buy Russian S-400 missile systems added fuel to the fire.

Iraq wants to barter food for desperately needed Iranian gas supplies – report
Moreover, Turkey is trying to ditch the dollar in an attempt to support its national currency. The lira has lost nearly half of its value against the greenback over the past year. The currency plunge was exacerbated by soaring inflation and increasing prices for goods and services.
A triumphant return of Iran to the global trading arena did not last long. Shortly after winning the US presidential election, Donald Trump opted to withdraw from the 2015 nuclear deal signed between Tehran and a group of nations, including the UK, US, France, Germany, Russia, China, and the EU.
The oil-rich nation has once again become a target for severe sanctions resumed by Washington, which has also threatened to introduce penalties against any countries that would violate the embargo. The punitive measures banned business deals with the Islamic Republic and cracked down on the country’s oil industry.

US tells world to steer clear of Iranian oil tankers
Sanctions have forced Tehran to look for alternatives to the US dollar as payment for its oil exports. Iran clinched a deal for oil settlements with India using the Indian rupee. It also negotiated a barter deal with neighboring Iraq. The partners are also planning to use the Iraqi dinar for mutual transactions to reduce reliance on the US dollar amid banking problems connected to US sanctions.
President Vladimir Putin said the US is “making a colossal strategic mistake” by “undermining confidence in the dollar.” Putin has never called for restricting dollar transactions or banning the use of US currency. However, Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov said earlier this year that the country had to dump its holdings of US Treasuries in favor of more secure assets, such as the ruble, the euro, and precious metals.
The country has already taken several steps towards de-dollarizing the economy due to the constantly growing burden of sanctions that have been introduced since 2014 over a number of issues. Russia has developed a national payment system as an alternative to SWIFT, Visa and Mastercard after the US threatened tougher new sanctions that would target Russia’s financial system.
So far, Moscow has managed to partially phase out the greenback from its exports, signing currency-swap agreements with a number of countries including China, India and Iran. Russia has recently proposed using the euro instead of the US dollar in trade with the European Union.
Once a top-10 holder of US sovereign debt, Russia has all but eliminated its holdings of US Treasuries. Moscow has used the money to boost the nation’s foreign reserves and to build up its gold stockpile to stabilize the ruble.

Popular places next year are thought to be Japan, which is hosting the Rugby World Cub, and Itay, with it being the 500th anniversary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci. However, attempting to choose the safest place to travel with the family can be difficult with threats of crime, local laws and tourists being imprisoned or killed. Express.co.uk reveal some of the safest countries in the world to book a holiday to next year.
The cold country is often deemed safest in the world for a number of reasons.

Most attacks are often against minority groups in the country or are domestic cases.
It is also considered a progressive country with LGBT rights some of the most open in the world, as well as recreational cannabis legalised.
The biggest threat is petty crime such as pickpocketing, although Chinese tourists are threatening to boycott the country following the arrest of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou.
Crime rates have continued to fall in Switzerland, with violent crimes and burglaries lowest in 2017, according to the country’s Federal Statistic Bureau.
However, there has been an increase in thefts in public transport areas popular with tourists such as the airport and trains in Geneva.
Tourists should also be aware of road travel which sees huge fines if speeding or without correct documentation.
The country has remained neutral since 1815, in both World War I and World War II despite being surrounded during the latter with military neutrality after the Treaty of Paris.
Not only is army conscription mandatory, but most homes also have bunkers to withstand nuclear blasts – reports suggest 114 per cent of the population could be protected.
Back in October, American politicians asked Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to reconsider Huawei’s involvement in his country’s 5G plans. Turns out Canada isn’t the only US ally the government has warned against using the Chinese tech giant’s products. According to The Wall Street Journal, the government has reached out to Germany, Japan, Italy and other friendly countries, particularly those where the US has military bases. US officials apparently talked to those countries’ representatives, telling them about what they see as cybersecurity risks if they use Huawei-made components to build their 5G infrastructure.
Huawei has fallen out of favor with the US government after a congressional report from 2012 called it a national security threat out of concerns that the Chinese government could compel the company to give it access to sensitive data. Just before this year’s midterm elections, the country even banned government personnel from using Huawei and ZTE devices.
WSJ says US officials briefed representatives from Germany, Japan and Italy in an effort to dissuade both government and commercially operated networks from using Huawei (and ZTE) components. In addition to discussing the possibility of Beijing forcing the company to comply with requests for data access, the authorities reportedly stressed 5G’s susceptibility to cyberattacks and espionage, as well.
See, current cell towers are separate from their network’s “core” systems in charge of transferring voice and data traffic. 5G cell towers, however, will have hardware capable of doing some tasks currently accomplished by core systems. While US military bases have satellites and telecommunications networks of their own, they’re only used for sensitive communications and most of the military’s voice and data traffic still go through commercial networks.
An official told the publication:
“We engage with countries around the world about our concerns regarding cyberthreats in telecommunications infrastructure. As they’re looking to move to 5G, we remind them of those concerns. There are additional complexities to 5G networks that make them more vulnerable to cyberattacks.”
It remains to be seen whether the countries decide to take the US government’s advice and ban Huawei like Australia already did. Huawei is the leading 5G equipment supplier, after all, and offers customizable products at prices lower than its rivals’.

]]>The sentence was handed at Lewes Crown Court, after Lina Tantash was found guilty on two counts of stalking, and handed a series of restraining orders.
Then Dublin-based Tantash, 44, described during the trial as a “highly intelligent” project planner at Trinity College, began a relationship with filmmaker Jarlath Rice, 50, back in early 2007.
Perhaps sensing already that they were not a perfect match, Rice ended the union just weeks later. But to Tantash this was simply a man in denial of his feelings.
So began her campaign to show him true love.
Tactics developed from the standard: turning up on his doorstep, sending 20,000 texts, calling him up to 40 times a day at work, sometimes putting on fake accents to get through, and setting up 11 separate email accounts to dispatch romantic declarations (sample name: jarlathswitchthephoneonby9am@gmail.com).
But as Rice blocked her, and moved houses – once even staying in a hotel – Tantash grew more persistent. She typed up a 21-point “Love Contract” according to which Rice would have to return her calls within 15 minutes, “be nice”, admit that they were in a relationship, and marry her within a year. In return, Tantash, who comes from a privileged background, told the judge that she paid off his debts totaling over €50,000 ($ 57,000).
Rice said that he signed the document, and a later, expanded 40-point version, in the vain hope that she would lay off him. Instead, as psychologists say is typical in such cases, it simply spurred Tantash on.
Finally, the victim decided that it would be safest to change countries, and relocated to Brighton, to take up a position as a college lecturer. Tantash, who at one point hired a private detective, and put up a £1,500 (almost $ 2,000) reward on Facebook to acquire Rice’s contact details, tracked him down and successfully applied for a job in nearby Croydon, within stalking distance of her beloved.
But in the absence of reciprocation, the tools for getting attention grew more dark and desperate. There was £200 worth of pizza ordered to his office in his name, as a gift. As punishment, she turned up in his workplace function threatening to kill herself or his colleagues. She began calling those close to him with threats, and allegations that he owed her money (purportedly for breaking the “love contract”).
As well as hacking his voicemail, Tantash physically assaulted Rice, leaving him with a shoulder injury that he said he still struggles with. But that was nothing next to the mental anguish.
“The aggressive and abusive dismantling of my life has left me vulnerable, frightened and exhausted,” Rice said in a statement, adding that he was “pushed deep into depression.”
“At my worst I have gone through periods of despair with suicide ideation.”
Tantash received her belated comeuppance only when she refocused her energies on supposed rival Sarah Bolland, Rice’s Brighton colleague.
Bolland told the court that she had no relationship with Rice, and that she was simply picked out from the staff section of the college website, to become a target for insults and death threats.
She said Rice was so caught up in Tantash’s delusions that he became convinced that he was partly to blame, which may have delayed any potential police action.
Tantash, who said that she suffered from psychological problems as part of her defense, was finally arrested last October, though continued to pester Rice even with the charges hanging over her until February this year.
During proceedings Tantash quarreled with court officials, and attempted to blame Rice for her actions, claiming he was a “narcissist” who “gaslighted” her, and alleging that she was only ever present at various public occasions uninvited as a result of “coincidences.”
“In my opinion you are vicious, devious and manipulative woman. You should be thoroughly ashamed of what you have done to Mr Rice and Miss Bolland,” said Recorder Stephen Lennard, as he read out the sentence.
Accepting her punishment, and claiming she now “deeply regrets” her behavior Tantash has offered to leave the UK upon serving her term.
