Team Kelly: Desz performing “Can We Talk” (Grade: A) defeated Sid Kingsley performing “Make It Rain” (Grade: A) — Sid stolen by Blake | Once Desz adorably got over the fact that Usher’s eyes really do sparkle — of course she snorted — she impressed him with the fact that she could go as low as a tenor. Newly-stolen Sid tackled a Foy Vance number I’d never heard but immediately loved; damn, that was hot — and it was flippin’ perfect for Sid’s raspy voice. Usher advised him to divide his soulfulness between his voice and his piano-playing. On stage, Desz delivered a fantastic performance. She had the presence, the voice, and holy crap! That key change! She wasn’t just living the moment, she was loving it, and her joy was contagious. I was like, “Good luck, Sid.” But he did not need any luck. The minute he opened his mouth, smoke came out. There shoulda been steam coming off that man, because his vocal was as hot as an Atlanta sidewalk in August. Personally, I preferred his gutsy, bluesy performance to Desz’s, fun as hers was, but I assumed she’d get the win; she was more of a crowd-pleaser. What a relief that Sid got stolen, electing to go with Blake instead of former coach John. Sid’s whole vibe kinda reminds me of the True Blood theme song.
Team Blake: Jim Ranger performing “Humble and Kind” (Grade: A) defeated Jus Jon performing “Finesse” (Grade: B-) | Before bringing in his contestants, Blake explained that he’d paired them in a Knockout because, despite being in very different lanes, they were his most soulful team members. Jus Jon was especially nervous, what with singing in front of his idol and all. Usher advised him to incorporate into his performance more variation and “grease.” He also rhymed a great many of his suggestions: “Don’t hide it, divide it,” he recommended. (Has he always done that?) “Jim is a jam,” Usher decided after hearing him run through Tim McGraw’s classic. What most impressed me was that I didn’t hate it, being as enamored as I am of Addison Agen’s Season 13 version; Jim made it his own in a way that made it feel like a whole different song. When it was go time, Jim nailed it. Also stapled it, taped it and sutured it. He started off lovely and soft, inviting us in, so by the time he got big and raspy, he had us floating on every note he sang. Absolutely winning. When it was Jus Jon’s turn, bless his heart, he was a lil’ stiff. He loosened up toward the end of the Knockout and started to look like he was having fun, but I figured by then, he’d already lost. His voice was strong and clear, and didn’t falter no matter how much he moved around, but it didn’t feel… special. If Jim hadn’t had it in the bag, he surely would’ve turned the tide when he choked up explaining to the coaches what the song meant to him and his “knucklehead” boys.
Team Legend: Bailey Rae performing “Let Me Down Easy” (Grade: A-) defeated Lauren Frihauf performing “Cry Baby” (Grade: A) | In rehearsal, it sounded like Bailey had chosen herself an ideal number. John’s only concern was that she wasn’t physically telling the story that she was singing. Lauren, on the other hand, had picked a song that didn’t play to her strengths; she’s sorta sweet-voiced, and heaven knows “sweet” isn’t the word you automatically associate with Janis Joplin’s hits. So John and Usher tried to help her rearrange the number so that it would suit her better. Under the spotlight, Bailey sounded record-perfect, but the only new physicality she seemed to put into her performance was moving her free hand with pretty much every syllable she sang. It didn’t matter, though; she was as solid as the broad side of a barn. When it was Lauren’s turn… well, all right. She made me look up and lean in. There was a cool Cowboy Junkies vibe to her verse that set her up nicely for success on the bigger chorus. Was she actually winning this thing? To my astonishment, she was. Bailey is probably the stronger, better vocalist overall, but Lauren’s performance was way more interesting. It wasn’t perfect, but the little bits of raucous messiness in it worked — like they were a tribute to Janis that only Lauren could’ve made.
Team Blake: Ian Flanigan performing “Beautiful Crazy” (Grade: B) defeated James Pyle performing “In My Blood” (Grade: B+) | Ahead of Ian’s run-through, he told us that working the bar scene, he’d “created a lot of alcoholism in my life” before meeting his partner. Blake advised him not to drop lines before the lyric is finished, and Usher recommended that James not get ahead of the beat. Up first, Ian took us, as he’s wont to do, right to two in the morning at the saloon on the outskirts of town. It wasn’t the showiest performance ever, but there was an intimacy to it that worked in Ian’s favor. And I’ll be damned if it didn’t sound like he was singing some of the more urgent lines directly to his partner. When it was James’ turn, wow, he did the hand thing even more than Bailey Rae had. But his performance was explosive. He didn’t so much sing the chorus as expel it from his body. If I was only judging based on this Knockout, I might keep James, but if I were Blake, and knowing what Ian is overall capable of, I’d have chosen to keep him. “Do you drink boiling water?” Blake asked him. That was how unique his voice was. Ya just don’t let that go.
Team Kelly: Madeline Consoer performing “Die From a Broken Heart” (Grade: A-) defeated Kelsie Watts performing “You Oughta Know” (Grade: B) | When Madeline realized that she’d be competing with Kelsie, she admitted that she got in her head. Couldn’t say I blamed her; Kelsie is a vocal beast! But there was something about her Alanis run-through that wasn’t working. Maybe it was that her voice was so pretty, so perfect, it didn’t sound angry enough? Madeline sounded like enunciation was going to be an issue. Usher challenged her to be more emotional in her performance, even if it took her back to her own heartbreaking past. Basically, the same problem as Kelsie was having: It wasn’t about the notes, it was about the feeling. On stage, Kelsie sang through a perfect sneer and very much “acted” the song. And on one hand, it worked: I couldn’t take my eyes off her; her rage was palpable. On the other hand, it didn’t work: That rage felt manufactured, like an Atlantic City revue, not an authentic rock performance. All in all, it was like a cake that coulda used an extra 10 minutes in the oven. It just wasn’t quite… done. When it was Madeline’s turn, she sang with a beautiful clarity that instantly made me say, “Well, hello!” Her number was far less bombastic than Kelsie’s, but it was a much better showcase for Madeline’s vocals. And the vulnerability that she managed to display, I thought, had to have clinched the win. I believed Madeline here, I didn’t believe Kelsie.
Team Gwen: Carter Rubin performing “You Say” (Grade: A+) defeated Chloé Hogan performing “Weak” (Grade: A-) — Chloé stolen by John | Carter shared in rehearsal that he’d chosen Lauren Daigle’s song because it spoke to him as a kid who’s a little different and who’s been picked on for that fact. (Dang, that kid is poised, huh?) Music teacher Chloe explained that she’d chosen SWV’s classic in part because it was so significant in the history of Black music. Usher advised her to be more relaxed and dynamic in her vocal. “If you’re in your head,” he said, “you’re dead.” In the moment of truth, Carter turned out a performance that was so polished, powerful and well-thought-through, it made me wish that Voice contestants more often went on to become superstars. He was spectacular. “I can’t breathe,” Kelly gasped afterwards. He was that good. When it was Chloé’s turn, she brought to the fore a vocal that was as silky as anything hanging in the wardrobe department. I was in the middle of typing her downfall was probably going to be that she showed less range than Carter when… boom, she changed on a dime and went big. In the end, this was a much more dynamic Chloé than I’d seen/heard before. This was a potential contender. Still I didn’t think she could compete with Carter. As John noted, her song was, in a way, not built for this competition. And I doubted that I was the only one listening who could’ve said what Kelly did about Carter’s performance: “It broke me in the most amazing of ways.”
Dispatched in the briefest of cutaways — argh, what’s the hurry? — Joseph Soul defeated Van Andrew to remain on Team Gwen. And while we got to hear Gwen’s thoughts on the victor’s performance, we didn’t get to hear so much as a note of Van singing. (Good Lord, how bad could he have been?)

Former Vice President Joe Biden on Friday night made a primetime speech as he approaches an apparent victory in the 2020 presidential election against incumbent Donald Trump. He and running mate Sen. Kamala Harris appeared before the nation from Wilmington, Delaware; you can watch a live stream of the event above, via Bloomberg QuickTake: Now.
“We do not have a final declaration of victory yet,” Biden noted in his opening. “But the numbers… tell us a clear and convincing story. We are going to win this race… with a clear majority and the nation behind us.”
Again, Biden at the time he spoke — and despite another boost in his Pennsylvania total — still had not officially cleared the threshold of 270 electoral votes needed to win the presidency, but the ongoing vote counts in several states seem to be in his favor. Early on Friday morning, Biden took the lead in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which would be the decisive win for him with its 20 electoral votes. At press time, Biden has 253 electoral votes, with Trump trailing with 214 electoral votes, and several states — including Arizona, Georgia and North Carolina — still too close to call.
If Biden is elected, Harris would become the first female vice president of the United States, and also the first person of color elected to the vice presidency.
One hallmark of the 2020 presidential election, of course, was the record number of mail-in ballots, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and concerns about/state limitations with in-person voting. With each state in control of its tabulation timetable for mail-in ballots, Trump, for one, used his rallies and other appearances to cast aspersions on the validity of those results. He continued to make unfounded claims of voter fraud and illegally cast ballots in a televised statement on Thursday, which frustrated, among others, several cable news hosts.

This week on The Flash, Barry had a need to monitor his speed. But when superhero duty pulled him in multiple directions, who was it that he ultimately let down?
As Carver sicced Rag Doll on Joe West, Singh begged his top cop to hide out in WITSEC — but Joe refused, feeling he is close to getting the goods on the tech titan and his ties to Black Hole. But sure enough, Joe nearly dies when during a drive his car speeds up and refuses to brake. Luckily, he throws himself out the driver door before it crashes and explodes into a wall.
Meanwhile in the Mirrorverse, Iris has “adapted” to a point that she can now make sense of the monitors and what not, so she shares with Eva her idea to somehow get in contact with Barry, her husband, who as The Flash should be able to vibe in and save them. Eva buys herself some time by faking exhaustion, before slipping away to task Mirror Iris with draining The Flash of his increasingly precious power.
Joe is grilling Sunshine at the CCPD while Barry reviews evidence from the crash scene. And just as Barry realizes that Rag Doll was behind the crash, we see the bendy baddie extricate himself from a file box in the interrogation room and pounce on Joe. Joe gets off a couple of bullets which Rag Doll manages to deflect back at the lawman. Barry speeds to the scene… but sputters out just as the second bullet eludes his grasp and wings Joe’s shoulder.
Back at STAR Labs, Joe brushes off the close call, but Barry insists that he stay put for now — and possibly reconsider the WITSEC option. Joe grows restless eyeballing a photo of Carver, so he privately slaps his badge down and heads out to confront his prey mano a mano. When Carver slips up and reveals that he hired Rag Doll, Joe pulls out his phone which has been recording them and imagines he has Carver dead to rights. Carver, alas, presses a button on his watch which sends out a DMP that erases the audio file on Joe’s phone. “Whatever you think I’ve done, it’s a million times worse,” Carver gloats. “I can eliminate anyone, anywhere” — including, he says, Joe, Cecile and even their baby daughter, at which point Joe slugs the exec on his way out the door.
Over at the Citizen, Allegra is fretting over the attacks on Joe and Cecile possibly being a target when Rag Doll shows up there, KOs Allegra and Nash, and abducts Cecile. Tracking Cecile’s phone, Barry speeds him and Joe to the location. While Barry grapples quite literally with Rag Doll, expending precious energy, Joe finds Cecile and discovers that she is seated on a pressure sensitive bomb. Joe deftly changes places with her, then urges Barry to speed Cecile to safety. Barry does that, then doubles back to save Joe. Alas, a depleted Barry arrives moments too late… only to find that Joe managed to defuse the bomb, thanks to a tip from Nash on the phone. Still, Joe is sufficiently spooked that he agrees to WITSEC, even though Barry is not able to track down Iris for a proper father/daughter goodbye.
Once Joe is gone, we see Singh report in to Eva via his car’s rear view mirror, confirming that Joe West is out of the way, as requested. (“Success is assured” and all that jazz.) Eva is pleased, because “if anyone is going to make my husband pay, it is going to be me.” Eva then pays Carver himself a visit, via a mirror delivered to their swank home. She wants an apology, but he declines to oblige. She claims that she “wanted to help the world,” whereas he is now “destroying it.” She trumpets that she had “a vision for mankind,” which Joseph says he is now “making a reality,” even as his wife rots in the Mirrorverse. Eva offers the hubs one last chance to make things right, but he scoffs, “I’m untouchable, literally,” before smashing the mirror into shards.
Things are even more tense at the West-Allen household, when Barry returns from seeing off Joe and finds an irate (or “irate”) Iris (or “Iris”). Iris argues that Barry, given all his powers, should have sped to find her in time. Bar says that Joe will be back once the Carver situation is handled, to which Iris blasts back, “It could be years!” before they catch him. Iris insists that Barry take her to her dad right now, but he says he can’t. “Can’t, or won’t?” she hisses back, agitating him further and further, all the while noting his speed gauge changing colors. Driving the knife in further, Iris says, “I trusted you, but now we have something else in common — we both lost our parents.”
Barry is taken aback by the dig, but is even more surprised by what comes next. “I want you to leave,” Iris huffs, opening the loft door. She contends that he “always” does this, makes bold decisions and leaves others to “deal with the fallout,” but now “I am done.” Barry believes “we can get through this,” that Iris is his home. “Not anymore,” she makes clear, before shutting the door closed in his face, as his speed gauge ticks down another shade.
Elsewhere…. Ralph tracked down Sue Dearbon, who was plotting to steal from a series of banks that, he eventually realized, were all owned by Carver — who apparently has the goods on her parents. Sue acknowledged that as much as she enjoys toying with Ralph, she does feel bad after doing it. Before leaving, she gives him the diamond she stole during her first appearance in the show, saying, “Look into it, you might find something interesting. I know I did” — and she is referring, of course, to the Black Hole logo we know to be etched on the stone.

No need for Westworld‘s hosts to go on airplane mode in order to extend their battery life: Season 3 of the HBO sci-fi series will be shorter than the two that preceded it.
TVLine has confirmed that Season 3 will consist of eight episodes, but the length of those installments is unknown. Seasons 1 and 2 each clocked in at 10. The upcoming season is slated to premiere in 2020.
A trailer released in July for the series’ return featured footage of new cast member Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) walking around what seems like a futuristic Los Angeles, where he apparently runs into (some iteration of) Evan Rachel Wood’s Dolores, as well as a World War II scenario involving Thandie Newton’s Maeve and Rodrigo Santoro’s Hector. At one point in the preview, Dolores warns that she and her circuit-filled siblings are on their own. “We have to be smarter than them, or they’ll find us,” she says. “And they will kill us.”
The upcoming season also will include guest-star appearances by Lena Waithe (Master of None) and Vincent Cassel (Ocean’s Twelve).

The body count from the conflict in Yemen surpassed 60,000 last week, according to an independent tally, yet mass media continue to cite old figures that heavily underestimate the devastation, an informed researcher has told RT.
More than 60,000 people have been killed in Yemen since January 2016, according to a new report by Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED), which estimated that nearly half of those deaths occurred this year.
“From what we can see from the reporting at least, there has been quite a general lazy attitude in using, for instance, the 10,000 figure provided by the UN, the sole official figure since 2016. And still many newspapers and media outlets are using that, which significantly downplays the devastation,” said Andrea Carboni, one of the researchers behind the report, who feels the crisis in Yemen has gone largely under-reported.
The death toll is likely to increase further, amid an ongoing battle for Yemen’s port city of Hodeidah, despite a UN-brokered ceasefire. It was agreed between the Saudi-backed government of Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi and the Houthi rebel group last Thursday, but the truce was pushed back at least until Tuesday, as warring parties refuse to honor it. According to reports, the Arab coalition launched new airstrikes on the port city on Sunday, while clashes continue to plague the region.
“We know already that there are pockets of famine reported in several areas and 85,000 people may have also died because of malnutrition and diseases connected to it,” Carboni said.
More than three years of hostilities have taken a devastating toll on Yemen, with both the Houthis and the Saudi-led coalition accused of committing various crimes. Millions of people, including children, are at risk of starvation, while over half of Yemen’s population relies on aid to survive. A strict sea and air blockade of Yemen continues to cause shortages of essential supplies like food, medicines and fuel.

The country also suffers from rampant diseases like measles, diphtheria and cholera, exacerbated by the lack of healthcare services, water treatment facilities, and other crucial civilian infrastructure damaged by the Saudi-led bombings. Numerous NGOs throughout the conflict noted that Saudi airstrikes have been responsible for a large share of civilian deaths, by often “mistakenly” targeting marketplaces, funeral processions and weddings.

The retaking of Raqqa, Islamic State’s (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) stronghold in Syria, was hailed as a major victory for the Western coalition one year ago – even despite harrowing reports of civilian casualties and unhinged destruction caused by the offensive. One year later, the Syrian city, where people are living side-by-side with rubble and human remains, barely makes a blip in Western media. RT has extensivelyreported about the plight of the city.
But now a new NPR report, supplied with a warning it “contains descriptions of dead bodies,” is bringing harrowing testimonies of people, working tirelessly to recover corpses from under the ruins, to the Western readers. Those may be surprised to discover that US-led airstrikes apparently left more civilian casualties than publicly acknowledged.
The story opens up with a chilling description of “delicate skeletons of two children” being retrieved from a collapsed home. More bodies are then unearthed from a mass grave in what was once Raqqa’s public park.
While the US coalition says 104 civilians were killed in airstrikes and shelling, emergency teams working on the ground recovered more than 2,600 bodies since January of this year alone. Citing local workers, the report states that most of them “were civilians killed in coalition airstrikes during the battle for Raqqa between June and October 2017.”
“The rescue workers’ findings, which they document in meticulous notes shown to NPR, point to an offensive that killed many more civilians than it did ISIS members, and where the majority of those civilians likely died in American airstrikes.”
When verifying the claim that the real tally could be “likely in the ‘thousands’,” the outlet then went to study the data provided by Airwars, an independent website monitoring conflicts in Iraq and Syria. It estimates that the Western coalition had used as many as 21,000 munitions against targets in Raqqa.
“We expected a significantly higher portion of civilian harm reports to be determined as credible, since in Raqqa really the only player causing the destruction was the coalition,” Chris Woods, the director of Airwars, told NPR. According to Woods, the coalition only partially admitted casualty reports from Raqqa, which “suggests a political dimension to the decision-making process.”
In turn, Donatella Rovera, an adviser for Amnesty International, who gathered testimonies from journalists embedded with Western-backed Syrian militias, said the airstrikes sometimes came “within minutes” of a local commander choosing a target. No precautions had been made to ensure there were no civilians “in those buildings.”
“For now, Raqqa’s people are left to count their dead largely alone, while the US and other powers strike elsewhere in Syria.”
RT crews filmed scenes of destruction and despair in Raqqa since it was cleared of Islamic State militants. A shadow of its former self, the ruined city still smells of decomposing bodies and is strewn with IS landmines that hamper reconstruction efforts.

MoviePass’ parent company just gave itself more wriggle room to issue new shares — at the same time the partner it’s used to repeatedly sell new stock to shareholders cancelled their contract.
Helios and Matheson’s creditors have agreed to reduce the number of shares the company needs to set aside for notes it issued that can be converted into stock, the company said in a regulatory document filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Thursday. Additionally, the company essentially reached an agreement with its creditors to cancel a convertible note deal it agreed to in June, meaning it no longer has to set aside shares for that either.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

A month ago Sony added more than 200 local broadcasters to its PlayStation Vue streaming service, and today the number grew by more than 85. That puts the total number of local stations available at 540 or so, although for any individual viewers it’s probably just going to matter for the several stations in their area.
The list of new additions is available on Sony’s website and consists mostly of ABC, CBS and Fox affiliates around the country, with a couple of new NBC stations for good measure. Now that the starting price is at $ 45, at least more customers can know they’ll be able to watch and DVR fall shows from the major networks without having to add an antenna to their setup.

It turns out Russian cosmonaut Sergey Prokopyev has grayed quite a bit following the drop in air pressure on board the ISS, his colleague has discovered, while giving the commander of the Soyuz MS-09 spacecraft a haircut.
In his latest enlightening video report from aboard the International Space Station, cosmonaut Oleg Artemyev has detailed the haircut process in near-zero gravity some 400 kilometers above Earth. Using his colleague Sergey Prokopyev as his subject, Artemyev explains that while a regular hair clipper can be used in space, it must be attached to a vacuum cleaner to ensure the safety of the crew and equipment.
While cutting the hair of the commander of the Soyuz MS-09, Artemyev noticed that his friend has greyed quite a bit since arriving at the ISS in June.
“When you arrived, you only had four grey hairs, now you have 47,” the barber notes, to which Artemyev jokingly replies that it happened “after the decompression.”
On August 30, a sudden drop in air pressure occurred on board the space station. The problem was caused by a tiny two-millimeter hole drilled in the hull of the Soyuz spacecraft attached to the space station. While notifying the command of the malfunction, the cosmonauts used Kapton tape to temporarily seal the air leak, and later sealed it with a sealant.
Space detectives: Russian cosmonauts prepare for spacewalk to inspect mysterious Soyuz module hole
Russian cosmonauts will go on a spacewalk on November 15 to investigate the micro hole from the outside, as part of the ongoing investigation into whether the spacecraft was damaged on Earth or when already in space.
