NEW YORK — Cadillac president Johan de Nysschen bluntly shot down rumors his brand’s powerful twin-turbo V8 is also headed for the Chevy Corvette. Speaking Wednesday at the New York Auto Show, he said: “Just quit the speculation it’s headed for Corvette. It’s not.”

The 4.2-liter V8 cranks out 550 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque in the Cadillac CT6 V-Sport, which debuted at the show. With that kind of performance and the fact the engine will be hand-built at the General Motors Performance Build Center in Bowling Green, Ky. — at the Corvette factory — led enthusiasts to presume the engine would eventually be under the Vette’s hood.

De Nysschen, however, argued the engine will also focus on levels of refinement, rather than the Corvette’s raw, visceral dynamic. “I think Corvette wants a different kind of character,” he said.

In fact, the V8 is set to be only for Cadillacs, de Nysschen said, giving the luxury brand its first exclusive engine in years. “It’s a matter of being a thoroughbred luxury car,” he said. “It’s really only a luxury brand that could recoup this [development] cost.”

A version of the engine making 500 hp and 553 lb-ft will also be used in other Cadillac models. De Nysschen declined say which vehicle will get the engine next.

The new V8 uses a “Hot V” configuration more common to German performance cars, and has direct injection, electronic wastegate control, active-fuel management and stop-start technology. It teams with a 10-speed automatic transmission and fits either rear- or all-wheel drive systems.

With a new mid-engine Corvette — and potentially more versions of the existing generation Vette — on the horizon, speculation pointed to the sports car getting a twin-turbo powerplant of some sort (V6 rumors also have floated), and the Cadillac 4.2-liter seemed to fit on paper. According to de Nysschen, that won’t be the case.

Still, even though the Cadillac boss says this specific engine won’t go to Corvette, it’s hard to not think some version of this engine, perhaps in a different displacement, could find its way under the hood of the Vette at some point in the future.

We hope you’ve got some time to waste today, because the Chevrolet CorvetteZR1 configurator needs your attention. Seven pages of fiddling and tweaking can get you out the door in the low-ish six figures with a great gentleman’s GT, or you can give that left mouse button a workout and spend a Camaro on options. Either way, you’ll drive off the virtual lot with 755 horsepower and 715 pound-feet of torque, so there’s no way to lose.

Two trims present the first fork in the road. The no-cost 1ZR is “for Corvette purists who want the lightest car available,” comes with a nine-speaker Bose system and one seat color — Jet Black with Perforated Mulan leather. The 3ZR runs $ 10,000 and “provides the ultimate sport experience,” or rather, the ultimate luxury experience with your sport. That throws in upgrades like Napa leather and color-keyed interior, more adjustable seats, 10-speaker Bose audio, navigation, front curb cameras, and the Performance Data Recorder.

The $ 2,995 ZTK Track Performance Package slaps that high carbon wing on, different shocks and springs for the performance suspension, and a set of removable carbon fiber end caps for the front splitter. This package is limited to the coupe. The $ 6,995 Sebring Orange Design Package turns your car into the launch model, with orange and carbon everywhere.

Of the 10 exterior hues, only three are cost options at $ 995. The four wheel choices are all the same design in four finishes, from the standard nickel-plated aluminum to chrome-plated rims that demand a steep $ 1,995. The cabin offers 11 interior trims, but five are duplicate colors with different seating materials, and you can’t get the Jet Black with Orange Stitching without ordering the Sebring Package.

We configured a GT model made for regular weekend trips to the country house that happens to be near a public track. That meant a 1ZR Coupe in Blade Silver Metallic, Satin graphite wheels, and yellow brake calipers. Inside, Competition Buckets wrapped in Jet Black Napa leather with microfiber inserts, the Performance Data Recorder that adds navigation to the infotainment system, red seat belts, and the entire five-piece Corvette luggage set. Out the digital door for $ 126,985, with a very real smile.

The timeless battle between the Ford GT and the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 has heated up in the past week. First we released the news of a new Lightning Lap record, set in a single day behind the wheel of Ford’s half-million-dollar GT. Then Ford touted its own even quicker lap time (2:38.6, sans video) at Virginia International Raceway, claiming the production-car record from the Corvette Z06 (2:39.8). Over the weekend, the Pratt & Miller Corvette race team finished third on the podium at the Rolex 24 at Daytona behind a pair of Chip Ganassi Ford GTs. Today, the one-upmanship continues with Chevrolet releasing a video of the new 2019 Corvette ZR1 turning a lap of VIR’s 4.1-mile Grand Course West in a blistering 2:37.3. Jaws. On. Floor.

If you haven’t already skipped to the bottom of this post to see the video, know that Corvette ride-and-handling engineer Jim Mero was behind the wheel of a top-spec ZR1, fitted with the eight-speed automatic transaxle and the ZTK Performance package. Modifications to the car are limited to safety equipment, including a very useful race harness. The ZTK package brings a retuned, track-focused suspension, super-sticky Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, and aerodynamic enhancements commensurate with the ZR1’s 755-hp supercharged 6.2-liter V-8. Chevrolet estimates that the airfoil at the rear generates as much as 950 pounds of downforce, and, judging by Mero hitting 157 mph well into the Climbing Esses (at the 52-second mark in the video), we’re gonna call that claim credible.

While this is just one more crosstown shot at rivals, both companies need to find a few more seconds to claim the overall lap record on the Grand Course. Currently, that badge of honor is worn by Gavin Bennett, who, in December 2007—while on a damp track, no less—turned a 2:35.6 in a shifter kart. Yes, a go-kart. Here’s hoping that General Motors and Ford continue battling so that a production car can claim that record. Or perhaps Dodge can swoop in and strike with a new Viper, as some rumors suggest.

The 2019 Corvette ZR1 in addition to being the most powerful production Corvette in history, has now racked up a production car track record. Chevrolet took the ultimate ‘Vette down to Virginia International Raceway, a track that Mark Reuss, Chevy’s executive vice president of global product development, described as “arguably America’s most challenging road course,” where it set the record time of 2:37.25.

The Corvette used was a completely stock coupe aside from the addition of racing seats and harnesses. It also featured the $ 2,995 ZTK Performance Package that includes the big rear wing, front splitter, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires and custom suspension tuning. Not only that, but the car was also equipped with the eight-speed automatic, rather than the seven-speed manual transmission. All told, you’d have to spend $ 122,990 to buy a similarly equipped ZR1, plus the cost of seats and harnesses.

Chevy also was kind enough to record the lap for viewing pleasure. We’ve embedded it above so you can see and hear the V8 monster rip around the track.

Last year, Rockland, Maryland-based Genovation Cars announced the second generation of its electric sports car, the GXE – which stands for Genovation Extreme Electric. This week, the company announced the pre-production GXE will make a silent splash at next month’s Consumer Electronics Show. The first gen took the C6 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 as a donor vehicle, swapping the supercharged 6.2-liter V8 for two electric motors producing roughly 600 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque. The organ transplant was good for a land speed record for street-legal electric cars at 205.6 miles per hour, and a standing-mile record for electric cars at 190.4 mph.

The second generation switches to the C7 Corvette Grand Sport, the new GXE’s two electric motors should get something like 800 hp and 700 pound-feet of torque. All of that power, mind you, goes to the carbon fiber wheels at the rear. On top of more powerful electric motors, Genovation upped the battery capacity from 44 kWh to 60 kWh and maintained 50/50 weight distribution. Range is said to be around 150 miles if you play Holly Golightly with the throttle pedal, or just enough for two UFO-sounding laps of the 12.9-mile Nürburgring. Genovation says the the bolt to 60 mph happens in under three seconds – a traditional Grand Sport does it in 3.5 seconds – and top speed will be on the far side of 220 mph.

The coming GXE proves the adage that the best things in life are free, the second-best things in life are hideously expensive. Each of the 75 examples Genovation plans to build will cost $ 750,000. The limited run helps keep the price high, and buyers can opt for a feature not seen on any other electric car we know of: a seven-speed manual transmission. The company believes it won’t have any trouble finding buyers, and plans to use the haul of loot to finance a less expensive electric sports car called G2. Genovation has schedule GXE deliveries to begin at the end of 2019.

But we like to look closer. The competition versions of the 488 and the ‘Vette face each other down on the world’s racetracks. The 488’s twin-turbocharged V8 cranks out 661 horsepower, while the Z06 uses a supercharged V8 to achieve 650.

Let’s just get to the pricing right up front. To own the 458, you need to have the $ 250,000 and a willingness to accept that anything additional will cost a lot more. Also, you might not be able to buy the car.

Ferrari produces fewer than 10,000 total vehicles every year and sells them all. So even if you have the means, you could end up waiting for the privilege of ownership.

You accept this to be part of the Ferrari mystique.
