Groups of Portuguese men-of-war, which can deliver a fatal sting, have travelled into UK waters, leading to a warning for beachgoers and dog-walkers.

An ‘unprecedented’ number have now been spotted off the Cornish coast, with more than 140 of the floating, tentacled organisms seen in three days.

In previous years there have been no more than 40 seen, and only three sightings were reported in 2016, the Cornish Wildlife Trust said.

The men-of-war are not in fact jellyfish, but “floating colonies created by coral-like hydroids”.

However, their long tentacles can cause painful stings, and experts are warning parents to recognise what they look like.

“The stings can be unbelievably painful and in rare cases, fatal,” MCS’s head of ocean recovery, Dr Peter Richardson, said.

“Recent persistent winds have blown them from the Atlantic on to our shores.

“Because a stranded Portuguese man o’ war looks a bit like a deflating purple balloon with blue ribbons attached, children will find it fascinating.

“So, if you’re visiting west coast beaches in the next few weeks it’s well worth making sure you know what these animals look like and that no one picks them up.”

The huge number of sightings has been caused by strong winds blowing the coastline.

Due to the number of sightings posing a risk to swimmers, the RNLI closed the bathing area on Perranporth today.

“Lifeguards have also been keeping a close surveillance (sic) on other beaches”, the charity said.

“This is an unprecedented event and we urge the public to be cautious and to keep an eye out for unusual species being stranded” Matt Slater, Marine Awareness Officer for Cornwall Wildlife Trust said.

“We may see other rare, warm-water species washing up.”

Members of the public are being encouraged to ring the Cornwall Wildlife Trust’s hotline to report strandings on 0345 2012626.

Restaurant Nathan Outlaw – named after its founder – was praised by the Good Food Guide for its efforts to “educate and encourage the public appetite for fish”.

Outlaw, 39, who has worked with TV chef Rick Stein, founded the two Michelin star eatery in 2007, and first made it on the list in 2009 at number 11. 

Good Food Guide editor Elizabeth Carter said: “Nathan Outlaw’s food is characterised by the absolute freshness of ingredients and a clear sense of purpose.”

She added: “Nobody seems to leave Nathan Outlaw’s staff – they just go and work in another one of his restaurants. They obviously think he’s a pretty good boss as well as a fine chef.”

Outlaw said: “To hear that Restaurant Nathan Outlaw has made it to No 1 is phenomenal. I’d say the award has come due to the hard work and dedication of our team who have now been working together for a decade.

“It just goes to show that if you stay true to yourself, get your head down, look after your customers and use the very best ingredients available to you, you’ll make it to the top.” 

Despite losing its top ranking, Simon Rogan’s L’Enclume in the village of Cartmel retained its perfect 10 score.

Pollen Street Social in London, Restaurant Sat Bains in Nottinghamshire and Heston Blumenthal’s The Fat Duck in Berkshire came in at third, fourth and fifth respectively, each with a score of nine.

Four new entrants on the list have set up shop under railway arches: Umezushi in Manchester; Hart’s Bakery in Bristol; and Bala Baya and El Pastor, both in London.

Some of the more unusual restaurant locations include Leeds’ Vice and Virtue in a former strip club and The Marram Grass Cafe, founded on an Anglesey caravan site.

Peter Sanchez-Iglesias was named chef of the year for the seasonal cuisine at Casamia in Bristol, while Ben Crittenden was named “chef to watch” for his tiny 12-seater restaurant Stark in Broadstairs, Kent.

Stark only has a tiny galley kitchen and does not have a toilet – forcing diners to nip up the road to the local pub.

The Good Food Guide, published by Waitrose, was first published in 1951 with 600 restaurants “where you can rely on a good meal at a reasonable price”.

It’s crammed with pretty, crooked little streets which tumble down to the waterside where the action takes place.

Visitors congregate here to survey the comings and goings of this busy little port. Whether it’s watching a container ship drifting silently by or the frenetic activity of little sailing boats, there’s a constant ever-changing backdrop to feast your eyes on.

Next month (August 13-19) sees the highlight of the social calendar, The Fowey Royal Regatta.

Once attended by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, it’s very much a family affair and coincides with Carnival Week.

The Town Quay is packed with processions and big crowds gather for the fi rework displays and events including the hotly contested children’s crab-catching competition.

AFTERNOON TEA

Cornwall wouldn’t be Cornwall without a cream tea. Head for the atmospheric Dwelling House, a Georgian Merchant’s house with a lovely antique interior.

If you prefer a view with your scones, The Old Quay House, once a Victorian refuge for seamen, has one of the best views over the estuary.

WORTHY OF NOTE

Families will love Readymoney Cove. Just a few minutes’ stroll from the centre of town, this tiny cove has a small, sheltered beach. It’s bounded by cliffs with comedian Dawn French’s house, Point Neptune sitting grandly on one cliff top and the remains of St Catherine’s Castle built during the reign of Henry VIII on the other.

This is also where Daphne du Maurier spent a few years during the Second World War at a former coach house.

Granite-faced Point Neptune was built on the site of an old Napoleonic gun battery that guarded the harbour and the remains are the rising buttresses you can see today.

Stroll up through the woods behind the cove to the 16th-century fort remains of St Catherine’s Castle for incredible views.

STRETCH THE LEGS

The best stroll in the area is the Hall Walk thanks to its incredible views of the estuary and our to sea. This circular follows the banks of the river and utilises both ferries via Bodinnick, Pont Creek and pretty Polruan.

ON THE WATER

Hop aboard one of the many boat trips setting off from Fowey harbour and discover the Fowey River and its du Maurier links from a waterside perspective such as sailing past the author’s Ferryside home which is still owned by her family, and home to her son Kits.

EATS AND DRINKS

For a lively atmosphere with good food head to Sam’s in Fore Street. The interiors are kitsch with a green and pink colour scheme, bringing a sense of funky rock to this otherwise sedate town.

The classic bouillabaisse is a firm favourite as are the delicious mussels and king scallops. Pull up a beanbag at the quirky Pinky Murphy’s Café for lunch.

It’s a riot of colour and patterns from the polka-dot throws to the striped cushions and lampshades. A top spot for lunch, a charcuterie plate will keep dad happy while cupcakes will delight the little ones.

BEDDING DOWN

Fowey Hall (0844 482 2152/ luxuryfamilyhotels.co.uk) a grand Victorian mansion overlooks the estuary and is particularly aimed at families.

Dogs can even come too.

There are indoor pools, a spa and rooms offer a touch of tradition with antiques and bright, modern prints on the soft furnishings bringing a contemporary injection of colour.

When filmmaker Joe Cornish burst onto the scene with his terrific sci-fi thriller Attack the Block back in 2011, I was convinced he’d be the next big thing. But that was just before it became common Hollywood practice to hand massive studio franchises to guys who had just one film on their resumes, and while Cornish has been credited with some screenplays since 2011, he hasn’t directed another feature yet. Everyone who’s seen Attack the Block knows just how unfortunate that is.

But fear not: after six years, it sounds like Cornish is finally getting the chance to get behind the camera once again for a movie called The Kid Who Would Be King.

A casting director named Jessica Ronane posted an announcement on Twitter (via The Playlist), and alerted us to the existence of this project:

In case that tweet gets taken down, it describes The Kid Who Would Be King as “a family fantasy action-adventure movie about a band of young kids embarking on an epic quest to thwart a Medieval menace.” That sounds like it’s bursting with potential.

As a grown man, I regularly find myself annoyed with child performances in modern movies. Too often, kids seem to be raised through the Disney Channel school of over-enunciating and “playing to the back row,” which strips them of anything approaching realism. But as Attack the Block proved, Cornish knows how to coax excellent performances from younger actors; after all, an unknown named John Boyega delivered a powerhouse performance in that movie and ended up as one of the stars of the biggest movie franchise in the world.

And as much as child actors might annoy me, I do lament the fact that kids growing up today don’t have many modern equivalents of Steven Spielberg’s Amblin movies we all grew up watching in the ’80s and ’90s. Perhaps not coincidentally, Attack the Block is the best example I can think of. This new movie sounds like it could fill that niche nicely.

Since 2011, Cornish co-wrote drafts of Ant-Man and Tintin with his longtime collaborator Edgar Wright, and flirted with directing Kong: Skull Island, Star Trek Beyond, Rust, Snow Crash, Gambit, and an MI6 thriller called Section 6. I was beginning to think he’d never make another movie again, and I’m glad that this one sounds like it holds so much promise.

The Kid Who Would Be King opens in theaters on September 28, 2018.

Ministers have suggested that the EU flag could soon be banished from the UK driving licence, now Britain is leaving the

Two Conservative Cornish MPs Scott Mann and Derek Thomas are supporting plans to replace the EU flag with the Cornish black flag.

Other regional symbols will also be considered after Brexit in a Commons debate next week. 

Transport minister, Andrew Jones, hopes to see regional flags appear alongside the union jack flag on UK driving licences.

He told The Telegraph: “The EU flag will have to go – what we are going to replace it with is a matter for debate.

“The debate in Parliament will be part of that process.

“I expect to receive lots of suggestions and it is no surprise there is a strong lobby from proud Cornishmen, but it is very early in the process.”

Currently, the law allows the Union Jack, the Cross of St George, the Scottish Saltire or the Red Dragon of Wales, along with their “accompanying identifiers GB, ENG, SCO and CYM”, to appear on licence plates.

Mr Mann said: “With the EU flag disappearing from the UK driving licence after Brexit, I think people should be given the option of having a regional flag as well as the Union flag which is already there, such as the Cornish, English, Scottish, Welsh or Northern Irish flags, among others.

“Although we are one United Kingdom, we all come from different countries and regions, and I think many people would like to have the option of making this known on their official identification.

“We already see this to a certain extent on car number plates, so why not driving licences?

“I don’t think this should be mandatory, but I do believe there is a desire for it from many people, and I can’t really see it being an administrative burden for the DVLA when licences already have to be produced individually for each person.

“I’ve recently been surveying local residents in North Cornwall and the reaction is quite positive, with a good chunk of people saying they would like to have the option.”

Mr Thomas added: “Us Cornish people are hugely proud and precious about our heritage and the identity of the county.

“Some of that identity has been lost through the way the has developed and we have the opportunity to re-establish something we can call our own. Putting our flag on the licences would be very well received.”
