All American went into its winter hiatus with one very big win and one very big loss.
Wednesday’s fall finale brought a number of simmering storylines to a boil, resulting in major life changes for Spencer — and everyone in his orbit, for that matter. Let’s recap what went down in the eventful hour:
THE GANG’S ALL HERE | Much of this week’s episode focuses on Shawn and Coop’s continued involvement with Crenshaw’s gangs, a situation that’s been getting increasingly sticky for the teens all season. One morning, while Shawn is making breakfast for his daughter, gang member Tyrone shows up at his door, and he gives Shawn and Coop a worrying ultimatum: They either ride with Tyrone from here on out, or they’re going to be in serious danger.
Coach Baker’s wife, Laura, finally gets to flex her legal skills in this episode, and she offers to get Coop and Shawn the protection they need — provided that Shawn cooperates with Laura’s team and rats out Tyrone to the D.A., who has been looking for intel on Tyrone for quite some time. Shawn is adamant that he’s not going to snitch on any gang member; if he’s going to get out of the gang life, he’ll find a way to do it himself.
Later, Shawn eventually does come up with an exit strategy. He meets with Tyrone the following day and hands over a backpack full of cash — all of the money that Shawn has been squirreling away from previous jobs and visits to Alvin’s barbershop. He’s ready to give himself and his daughter a fresh start down in Louisiana, and he’s hoping he can buy his way out of the gang life… and, much to Shawn’s surprise, Tyrone accepts the offer. After realizing just how much dough Shawn is willing to fork over, Tyrone dismisses Shawn from his duties — but, because he’s also a jerk, he informs Shawn that he “overpaid” for his ticket to Louisiana. “You ain’t worth that much, Shawn Scott,” Tyrone says before driving off.
But Shawn’s happy ending is ultimately too good to be true. Just as he’s arriving back at his apartment, giddily telling Coop over the phone how thrilled he is to be getting a fresh start, Shawn is shot in the chest by a rival gang member. He collapses as the shooter drives off, then dies on the sidewalk. (It’s a testament to All American‘s writers, and Shawn’s portrayer, Jay Reeves, that I was ultimately heartbroken to see Shawn’s story end this way.)
Coop is understandably wrecked over Shawn’s death; after all, she was on the phone with him when he died, and she heard the gunshots loud and clear over the line. Patience, on the other hand, is admittedly glad that Shawn’s death is getting Coop out of the gang world for good… until Coop informs her that that part of her life isn’t over just yet.
Elsewhere in the hour…
* Despite pressure from his superiors, Coach Baker refuses to let Asher play in the big homecoming game against Malibu — and Asher retaliates by revealing Beverly High’s entire playbook to one of the Malibu players. Unsurprisingly, when it comes time for the teams to face off, the game begins as a bloodbath for Beverly. Malibu’s defense is all over the field, blocking Beverly’s players as if they know exactly what Beverly is trying to do with the ball… because they do know what Beverly is trying to do with the ball.
Coach Baker and Spencer have a desperate brainstorm during halftime, and they decide to enlist Spencer’s Crenshaw friend, Chris, for help coming up with new plays. With assistance from Chris (and that fancy new Windows tablet that the show was very clearly advertising!), Beverly High blindsides Malibu with their plays in the second half, and Beverly emerges victorious, clinching the division title. But after watching Asher exchange a nod with one of Malibu’s players, Jordan realizes that Asher is the one who gave Beverly’s playbook to Malibu, and he threatens to have Asher taken off the team completely for what he’s done. (Asher, meanwhile, is sent to live with his mom for the foreseeable future, because his dad no longer finds him useful now that he’s not playing football. Yikes.)
* Despite their pledge to only remain friends for the time being, Leila and Spencer give in to their mutual attraction and sleep together after the homecoming game. Leila tells Spencer that it’s cool if he wants to forget the whole thing happened and just go back to being acquaintances, but Spencer has the opposite idea. He’s tired of pushing down his feelings for Leila, and he’s ready to pursue a relationship with her. (Leila responds by kissing him and dropping the sheets she had wrapped around her body, so let’s assume they’re on the same page about all that.)
* After the football game, Malibu’s head coach — who we already know loves to make Coach Baker miserable — takes Spencer aside and reveals that he used to know Spencer’s father. Spencer is skeptical at first, informing the coach that his father abandoned him six years ago… but the coach knew Spencer’s father to be a very good guy, and he suspiciously tells Spencer that his dad wouldn’t have left if he didn’t have a good reason. “And Billy Baker?” the coach continues. “That man will do whatever it takes to get what he wants.”
* Speaking of Coach Baker, he finds himself in a bit of a pickle at the end of the episode. When Beverly High’s sports committee receives an anonymous tip that one of the football players has violated the drug policy, Coach Baker tells all of his players that they need to be drug-tested immediately. But there’s a problem: Jordan was the one who did drugs when he got high the previous night, and he regretfully tells his father that he’s going to fail the drug test if he takes it. Later, during a brief moment when no one is manning the table lined with urine samples, Coach Baker walks over to it and swaps out his son’s sample for his own.

If fast-paced competition was on your plate for tonight, Served will satisfy your craving. In this local co-op game, you’ll be pitted against up to 3 other players and challenged to see who can serve up the most dishes, dunking ingredients onto plates to fight for the highest score.
You’ll be scrambling for ingredients that are bouncing around Served‘s various arenas, fighting your opponents as you work to dunk foods onto your plate in order to gain points. Pay attention to each plate in the arena, as the third plated food will finish the plate and earn extra points. If you’re extra attentive to the special foods for the round and plate with only those, you’ll earn even more points to hold over your opponents.
With just 4 simple actions, the learning curve isn’t too steep, letting even novices overcome experienced chefs by moving, jumping, and tackling/shooting food. With over 6 arenas and 4 modes to test out your cabbage b-ball skills on, Served is a great party for aggressive foodies.
You can try the demo of Served on Itch.io here. You can also check out the developers, Rocco Commisso, Micheal Trentchev, Max Hunt, and Rory O’ Connor, on their websites!
Unravel Two is the follow-up to 2016’s Unravel, the first indie game published under EA’s Originals brand — and it is just as adorable and emotionally powerful as the original. Unravel Two stars Yarny, the same anthropomorphized ball of red yarn that carried players through the first game, and it adds a second, blue Yarny, instantly upping the cute factor 100 percent.
Using the strings hanging from their bottoms (See? Absolutely adorable), Yarny and its blue buddy traverse beautiful, sidescrolling 3D landscapes of jagged rocks, busted logs, smoldering forest floors, clear waters and dangerous animals. They swing from branches and wall-jump up the crevasses between rocks, helping each other along the way. The characters can swing from each other, climb up one another’s strings, and even tie those strings together to create a thin trampoline that boosts them up the level.

The cooperative aspect of Unravel Two is new, but it doesn’t require two players to actually work. The entire game is playable solo, with one person alternating between the blue and red Yarny to solve spatial puzzles. The two characters can also combine into one blue-and-red-streaked Yarny. This control scheme is crucial, especially because Unravel Two isn’t an online co-op game — it’s local only. Fostering in-person gaming relationships was important to Unravel developers at Coldwood Interactive, an independent studio based in Sweden. After all, the Unravel series is all about the power of connection.
“We were slightly overwhelmed by the feedback that we got about this kind of emotional game,” technical director Jakob Marklund said during an Unravel Two gameplay demo at E3 2018. “And we got some criticism for things, but I think it was quite fair in the reviews. We didn’t do everything perfectly, but hopefully we have fixed some of these things in this game.”
“With EA, we have plenty of time.”
Marklund will know soon if Coldwood succeeded — Unravel Two is available right now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, following its surprise announcement at EA’s E3 press conference. Under the EA Originals program, Coldwood receives funding, publishing and a marketing boost from EA, which then takes a bit of the game’s profits in a revenue-sharing model. Before working with EA, Coldwood developers were living a rougher indie life, pressed to churn out a game every year just to stay sustainable. But Marklund says that with EA’s help, the team is free to focus on building bigger games with longer development timelines.
“With EA, we have plenty of time,” Marklund says. “So it’s a completely other world for us.”
EA doesn’t impose any creative restrictions on Coldwood, either.
“We are totally free to do the game that we want, but they give us really good feedback all the time,” he says. So in that sense it’s just a perfect situation for us. We can do whatever we want.”

]]>Shotgun Legend is an homage to The Legend of Zelda, to be sure, but one that brings portals, aliens, truck rims, shotguns, and co-op pals into the dungeon-delving, world-exploring formula.
Eugene finds two things one day: a portal and a truck rim. The portal takes him to a world filled with aliens who mean to take him out, but instead of handling these enemies with a sword, his handy shotgun will do. Using this, he’ll blast his way through an open world filled with deep dungeons that hide useful alien technology. Using his guns and these alien gadgets, he hopes to find the missing truck rim and make his way home.
Shotgun Legend offers ten dungeons to explore, the potential to dual-wield shotguns without breaking your arms, very little in the way of direction, and a co-op mode where players share a health bar. It’s a neat, lighthearted take on the Zelda style.
Shotgun Legend is available for $ 4.99 on Itch.io and Steam. For more information on the game and Wastebasket Games, you can follow them on Itch.io, YouTube, and Twitter.

Your journey starts with you and your partner-in-crime navigating your way into the mill and locating your prize. Don’t worry about hurting the economy while stealing logs from the mill – it’s run by an evil lumberjack. You would question his business sense after seeing the obstacles that block your path, though. Saw blades, flamethrowers and platforming challenges stand in your way in this bizarre, but charming co-op challenge. If you and your co-op pal navigate through the obstacles safely, you’re in the home stretch and all you have to do from there is get to the drop point and make off like bandit-beavers!

Outbreak: The New Nightmare draws from Resident Evil: Outbreak, having a group of players work together to make their way across an undead-infested city while dealing with tiny inventories, ammo shortages, and puzzles.
Outbreak: The New Nightmare gives players four different characters to choose from, each with character-specific gear and attributes, and then asks you to make it safely across a city that’s crawling with lethal beasts. With a little help from online friends, players can use firearms and their dodging skills to progress towards safety. However, they only have a single life to cross town, and with randomized item and enemy placements, they won’t be able to rely on past run experience to survive. They’ll just have to play smart and careful.
Outbreak: The New Nightmare features multiple difficulty levels, as well as other modes that pit players against hordes of monsters or other varied play types. Hopefully, bringing a handful of buddies with you on your journey will be enough to keep you alive no matter what the game throws at you, though.
Outbreak: The New Nightmare is available for $ 12.99 on Steam. For more information on the game and developer Drop Dead Studios, LLC, you can head to the developer’s site, the game’s site, or follow them on Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter.

Piranha Games is starting to open up on what MechWarrior 5: Mercernaries will entail after a year of teasing, and it’s good news if you don’t always want to play alone. The robot battler should launch in December 2018 with co-op play as a central feature — up to four players can take on the game’s central campaign. Your friends stand in for the AI teammates in your unit, which could be helpful when you absolutely need someone watching your back.
The title will also make a big deal of mod support through Steam Workshop, letting you tailor your own missions, planets and other aspects of the game. Not surprisingly, the game mostly hinges on running your own mercenary company. And if you’re wondering: yes, there’s a good chance the Clans play a role. The game starts in MechWarrior‘s 3015 timeframe and lasts for about 35 years, or right as the Clan invasion is in full swing.
There’s still a lot we don’t know about MW5, but for many its mere existence is important. It’s the first MechWarrior game with a single-player mode in over 15 years, and the first new game in the series for over 4 years. For some, it isn’t so much a sequel as it is a return to the franchise’s roots.

Hacktag is an asymmetrical co-op game about infiltration and industrial sabotage in an alternate universe where all the people are animals. Both online and local multiplayer are available, and the levels are procedurally generated. It’s the debut of French indie studio Piece of Cake Studios, and it entered early access on PC in June earlier this year.
It’s the year 2029, and you and your partner are charged with breaking into big corporations and stealing data. To do so, one person takes the role of the field agent, and the other is the hacker. I played a few rounds with Piece of Cake cofounder Bérenger Dupré at the independent festival IndieCade earlier this month. We traded off as field agent and hacker, and each role had parallel obstacles and abilities.
“I like to say that you’re going to be Tom Cruise and I’m going to be Simon Pegg, like in Mission Impossible, and we’ll yell at each other during the mission when everything doesn’t go right,” said Dupré while we played.
You’re both on the same map, but the field agent physically roams around and sneaks past guards while the hacker moves along electrical lines inside the walls and hides from patrolling antiviruses. As the hacker, you have to unlock electronic doors for the field agent, and similarly, the agent has to hack firewalls so that the hacker can move freely to a new area. It also has minigames in which both players have to work together to move on.
Above: Local co-op with the field agent on the left and the hacker on the right.
Hacktag has three different levels right now, each based off a real corporation. Dupré says that Piece of Cake enjoys poking fun at companies, but there’s also a deeper story where you can decide what to do with the data you’ve stolen. For instance, you can decide to become a whistleblower, or you can simply sell the data for cash.
“For the final game we’ll have a story mode with nine different stories, three for each corporation,” said Dupré. “When you play with a partner, you won’t have the same story. You’ll follow your story and the story of your partner. The funny thing is, each story—each corporation has their own policies and their own secrets, but you’ll also meet your own unique NPCs.”
Hacktag doesn’t feature any combat. Instead, it’s more about stealth. If one of you is caught by a guard or an antivirus, you’ll be sent to a holding cell. Your partner has a limited amount of time to come rescue you, and if they fail, then the mission’s over.
Piece of Cake is a 10-person studio that plans on only creating co-op games, which Dupré thinks are making a comeback. He says that there’s simply demand for those types of games, and that they’re in part responsible for the success of the Nintendo Switch, which recently added charmingly cartoony titles like Overcooked and Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime to its catalog.
Hacktag also has a colorful aesthetic with animals instead of humans. Dupré says that they decided to go for that look because it’s more welcoming for a broader demographic.
“We decided to make it like that because most of the time, stealth games are all about white dudes with guns,” said Dupré. “It’s really militaristic, really heavy, really dark. Or it’s ninjas, or hitmen. We liked the idea of a game that’s fun for couples to play together, for cooperative gamers, or even a dad who plays Lego games with his kids and wants to play a more hardcore game, but still with his children.”
Titanfall 2 has kept the fires burning for its dedicated community by valiantly releasing small bumps of free content almost every month this year. While gratis DLC is always great, fans clamored for vertically-inclined maps like the original game had — so the sequel’s team revamped some to include in content packs. The latest DLC, available July 25th, will include another throwback from Titanfall 1: The long-rumored return of the popular co-op player-vs-AI Frontier Defense mode.
Like other horde modes, Frontier Defense spits successive waves of computer-controlled enemies at a team of players — in this case, grunt troops and Titan mechs. While the original game’s version gave players a few turrets to deploy between enemy batches, Titanfall 2‘s mode will include a host of traps and tools to fight off the masses of grunts, spectres and Titans. Plus, players get a new Titan upgrade progression system, Aegis Ranks, to tinker with — but it applies only within Frontier Defense.
The new mode is playable on five maps to start, including Rise, a revamp from the first game. Titanfall 2‘s cramped PvP mode Live Fire gets a new map as well: Township. The game’s also including new elite warpaints for player firearms and Titan skins that cosmetically upgrade as you complete higher difficulties of Frontier Defense. But best of all for those of you who still haven’t given Titanfall 2 a shot: The game is giving you a free weekend from July 28th until July 30th after the DLC drops to try the game on for size.
