The shape-changing material in the process of unrolling in response to a change in temperature.

Recent heatwaves have struck areas like Northern Europe and the Pacific Northwest that have traditionally gotten by without much air conditioning. As people in those regions adjust to the new reality, we’ll likely see a change in electricity use, with surges in demand typical of locales further to the south. The strain those changes place on the grid can add to the challenge of rapidly moving away from fossil fuels.

Materials that passively heat or cool an environment can cut down on the demand for energy by handling some of these needs without requiring the use of energy. Some of these materials reflect incoming sunlight to keep it from heating a space, while others actively radiate heat away into space, which is great if you’re only worried about heat. But many of these areas experience seasons and have times where getting rid of stray heat will also boost energy use.

Now, a team of researchers at Nankai University has figured out a way to have it all: warming in cold air and cooling once things get hot—all without needing any energy input.

Google is using AI to run its data center cooling systems https://briefnews.eu/google-is-using-ai-to-run-its-data-center-cooling-systems/ https://briefnews.eu/google-is-using-ai-to-run-its-data-center-cooling-systems/#respond Sat, 18 Aug 2018 12:29:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/google-is-using-ai-to-run-its-data-center-cooling-systems/

Google’s data centers hold thousands of servers and they power everything from Google Search to Gmail to YouTube. But those data centers need to be kept cool in order for those servers to run reliably. A couple of years ago, Google began applying AI to its data center cooling systems and it offered system controllers recommendations about how to boost energy efficiency while maintaining optimal temperatures. Now, Google says its AI is running the show.

When the company developed its AI-powered recommendation system, it said the thinking behind the move was simple. “Even minor improvements would provide significant energy savings and reduce CO2 emissions to help combat climate change,” DeepMind said in a blog post today. After implementing the system, the company’s data center operators reported that it was uncovering some improved techniques, but vetting and manually implementing they system’s recommendations was requiring a fair amount of time and effort. That’s when Google began to explore an automated system.

Now, the AI system is implementing actions on its own, though human operators are always there to supervise and take over if need be. Every five minutes, the system takes a snapshot of the cooling system and that information is fed into DeepMind’s neural networks. The AI then assesses which actions should be taken to maintain temperature but minimize energy consumption, and after those actions are run through a number of safety checks, they’re implemented.

Google says that the system has been in place for a few months and it’s producing energy savings of around 30 percent. It’s also continuing to find new techniques to satisfy energy saving goals. The company adds that data centers might not be the only places that could benefit from such a system. “In the long term, we think there’s potential to apply this technology in other industrial settings, and help tackle climate change on an even grander scale,” it said.

Cooling off in Cuba: A love letter to Havana’s pools https://briefnews.eu/cooling-off-in-cuba-a-love-letter-to-havanas-pools/ https://briefnews.eu/cooling-off-in-cuba-a-love-letter-to-havanas-pools/#respond Fri, 27 Jul 2018 15:59:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/cooling-off-in-cuba-a-love-letter-to-havanas-pools/

Cuba is known as the island of beaches, but in Havana, finding a place to swim can be complicated. Thankfully, travel writer Lydia Bell knows a few good spots.

It’s summer in Havana. Humidity is nudging the 90s, and the air is stultifying. When the fierce months of July and August arrive, they will burn as hard as the red flame trees that are unfurling into incandescent bloom. Cubans will lurk inside, emerging only when the heat of the day has lost its bite. But mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun, and so I carry on.

On the sticky, ageing leather of the classic cars that transport me back and forth across the city, I sweat. As I tramp the streets lingering in any suggestion of foliage, I swoon in an oven of warmth. In my gym, rivulets pour off our bodies from weird places, like the backs of hands. I dream of walk-in fridges.

When all you can think about is cooling off, this coastal city in the Caribbean can be annoyingly, infuriating, maddeningly short of ablution spots. In Havana’s tourist heart—from Habana Vieja west to Vedado—the Malecón, Havana’s sea wall, both showcases the drama of the ocean and separates it from human life.

The only fancy pool option in Havana is the Gran Hotel Kempinski Manzana La Habana, known as the ‘Kempicky’ to most locals, and the closest you get to Miami in Cuba with its bathing, boozing, and showing of booty.

It’s topped with an infinity pool, restaurant and breezy alfresco bar and terrace, a great place for a lobster ceviche. The pool is overlooked by the towers of the Museo de las Bellas Artes, the Cuban wing of the national fine arts museum. My only complaint is the pool is a little tepid for me; I like mine icy-crisp. It’s expensive to get your tootsies wet here, but one doesn’t have to pay the $ 400 room rack rate; instead I’d buy a day-pass to the Swiss Resense spa and for that $ 66, we have use of the pool, indoor pool, sauna, hammam and gym. It’s a treat.

At the other end of the scale, Hotel Copacabana on the seafront in Miramar has the vibe and environs of a sleazy motel, but it’s a Cuban day out. I don’t go there for quiet, as they pump out loud pop and reggaeton. Local life unfolds around the pool, divided into a shallow area for children, and a deeper adult pool. Around and about parade attractive, extroverted ladies, some of whom are … let’s call them ‘ladies of the day.

There’s a post-apocalyptic feel to the hurricane-lashed concrete saltwater sea pool, but it offers the chance of lengths. It is ruled by a gaggle of nut-brown, sun-ravaged sexagenarian Russians and Italians. Instead of eating in the rather dull café, I go over the road to the lovely Italian place, Al Pescatore. The Copacabana entrance fee is steep, all things considered, so I tend to walk in as if I own the place and ask the pool guy if I can pay him direct.

When I want to sit on a more classic Caribbean beach, I head to the Eastern Beaches, or the Playas del Este, which start 23 kilometers from the city center, spooling out along the glistening turquoise coast in a long, unkempt ribbon of white sand and fat, scrappy palms. The experience is more colorful than idyllic. Cubans go en masse and prefer drinking and reggaeton to swimming. They often depart leaving empty bottles of Havana Club and cans of Bucanero.

Still, I love these beaches. The sea is deliciously aquamarine and the sand soft underfoot. The lunches (lobster, prawns, chicken or pork with rice and salad) from beach shacks are pleasant. Small salsa bands plod the sands, lugging double basses. There are masseuses, local salseros (salsa performers) bent on finding another foreign girlfriend to top up their collection, and snacks such as tamales (corn-stuffed palm leaves), cangrejitos de guayaba (a crab-shaped doughnut filled with guava jam), and coconut water served in coconut (lashed with rum). Kite surfers race up and down the waves.

Lately I’ve fallen back on the expatriates’ favorite, the illustrious Club Havana. This quiet urban beach is devoid of any Cuban honky-tonk, and has the feel of a hotel beach. Instead there’s cigar shopping, a cash point, a small shop, tennis, gym, two large pools, a cigar-smoke-wreathed darkened bar enamored of Spanish expats, an outside terrace for a pina colada, and two restaurants.

Although it’s frayed around the edges, it was once the home of the Biltmore Yacht & Country Club, and retains a certain hauteur. A hub for Havana’s pre-revolutionary rich, white elite in the 1950s, the place denied entry to mixed-race president Fulgenico Batista. Black and white images on the walls recall regattas and balls, and the place is referenced in nostalgic accounts of Havana penned by exiled Cuban Americans in the autumn of their life.

Canada’s red-hot real estate market is finally cooling off https://briefnews.eu/canadas-red-hot-real-estate-market-is-finally-cooling-off/ https://briefnews.eu/canadas-red-hot-real-estate-market-is-finally-cooling-off/#respond Tue, 18 Jul 2017 21:26:55 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/canadas-red-hot-real-estate-market-is-finally-cooling-off/ The great Canadian real estate binge may be coming to end. Numbers from the Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA) show the market across the country is substantially weaker when compared to the same time last year. Generally speaking the market saw a drop in sales, and decelerating price growth.

Sales Drop 11.4% Year-Over-Year

Real estate sales across Canada are dropping at a rapid pace. There were 39,979 sales, an 11.4% decline year-over-year. The monthly drop is the interesting part however, at 6.7% lower it’s the largest monthly drop since June 2010. A monthly decline is normal for this month, just not a drop this large.

Prices Experiencing Deceleration Of Growth

Prices across the country were basically flat from the month prior. The composite benchmark, that’s the price of your typical home in Canada, is now $ 616,500. This represents a minor 0.3% decline from the month before, and is 15.8% higher than the same time last year. While that’s still a pretty solid gain year-over-year, the 15.8% does signify decelerating growth.

Fastest Moving Markets Across Canada

The biggest year-over-year leaders in the country are Toronto, Guelph, and Vancouver Island. Toronto ended June with a composite benchmark price of $ 810,700, a 25.34% increase from the same time last year. Guelph, a suburb of Toronto, saw a composite benchmark price of $ 421,800 – which is also 25.34% higher than the same time last year…strangely. In third is Vancouver Island, where the benchmark price is now $ 418,400, a 19.81% increase from the same time last year.

Slowest Moving Markets Across Canada

The smallest year-over-year changes were observed in Saskatoon, Regina, and Calgary. Saskatoon had a benchmark price of $ 306,500, a 3% decline from the same time last year. Regina had a benchmark price of $ 297,800, a 0.7% decline from the same time last year. Third from the bottom is Calgary, which had a benchmark price of $ 435,900, a 0.6% increase from the same time last year.

Year-over-year growth remained high in most markets, but decelerating growth is a big concern. The bullish case would be growth falls to a more sustainable level, and prices continue to move higher but slower. The bearish case would be that growth turns negative, and brings the past few years closer to the average growth baseline. What do you think? Leave your comments below.

The Gigabyte Aorus GeForce GTX 1070 8G has three fans for advanced cooling https://briefnews.eu/the-gigabyte-aorus-geforce-gtx-1070-8g-has-three-fans-for-advanced-cooling/ https://briefnews.eu/the-gigabyte-aorus-geforce-gtx-1070-8g-has-three-fans-for-advanced-cooling/#respond Fri, 31 Mar 2017 12:42:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-gigabyte-aorus-geforce-gtx-1070-8g-has-three-fans-for-advanced-cooling/ Nvidia’s Pascal graphics processing unit (GPU) architecture has spawned everything from the fastest gaming GPU ever to some low-cost options that nevertheless provide for some serious 1080p gaming. Whether you want to spend $ 100 or more than $ 700 on a graphics card, the latest Nvidia chips have you covered.

If you’re squarely in the gamer midrange, then there are plenty of options for you, too. Gigabyte has recently introduced yet another of these, a GeForce GTX 1070 variant that promises strong performance at what’s likely to be a more reasonable price, as The Tech Report discovered.

More: The GTX 1080 is the video card you lust over, but the GTX 1070 is the one you’ll buy

The Aorus GeForce GTX 1070 8G uses the company’s Windforce Stack cooling system with three 100mm fans that force airflow downward into an advanced copper backplate cooling design. Titan X-grade choke and capacitors promise superior durability when overclocked, and the system utilizes a 3D-Active Fan feature that shuts the fans off during low-power gaming sessions and provides an RGB LED indicator showing fan status.

Generally speaking, the GTX 1070 slots in between the GTX 1060 and GTX 1080 to provide sufficient performance for today’s modern games even running in 4K resolution. It’s significantly faster than the previous generation 980 Ti and Titan X, making it a real bargain considering its performance level.

Regarding the Aorus specifically, the card supports a base speed of 1632MHz with a boost to 1835MHz when in overclock mode, and 1607MHz and 1797MHz boost in gaming mode. Gigabyte touts the card’s ability to drive up to 8K displays at 60Hz, making it a good choice for driving extremely high-end monitors like Dell’s $ 5,000 UP3218K. The Aorus GeForce GTX 1070 8G, naturally, is also certified for virtual reality (VR) gaming.

Connectivity options include three DisplayPorts, a DVI-D port, and an HDMI 2.0 connection. VR gamers will welcome the inclusion of two additional HDMI ports on the card’s interior, although the use of these ports disables one of the DisplayPorts. An RGB lighting system can cycle through 16.8 million color options for fully customizable lighting effects.

Gigabyte hasn’t yet provided pricing or availability. Given the impending release of the GTX 1080 Ti version of the Aorus, an April 2017 time frame is likely for the GTX 1080 8G as well.
