Destined for the three Baltic states and Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, and Hungary, the convoys are part of a brigade of 3,300 US troops, who along with their 2,500 pieces of equipment recently docked in Antwerp, Belgium. Their arrival in Europe is part of Operation Atlantic Resolve, Washington’s ongoing response to the Ukraine crisis and Crimea’s reunification with Russia in 2014.

“Sometimes what is old is new again, and that is coming in here,” Maj. Gen. Steven Shapiro, commander of 21st Theater Sustainment Command, which supports US military operations in Europe, told reporters earlier this month. “Antwerp and Rotterdam were major ports when we were operating during the Cold War… We are coming back to Antwerp in a big way.”

The military hardware will move across Europe via river barge, rail, and road. Officials described the deployment as a large-scale exercise focusing on improving logistics skills that would be needed in case war breaks out in Europe.

The US troop movement across Europe has been described as one of the largest of its kind since the end of the Cold War – and, true to tradition, has already faced opposition from unwelcoming locals.

US convoys traveling through Germany on their way to Poland have faced the discontent of locals – and governments.

“I think that it doesn’t help us in the long run if tanks drive up and down both sides of the border,” Dietmar Woidke, Brandenburg’s state premier, said earlier this year. However, a government spokesman took a more neutral approach to the troop movements in a statement released on Monday.

Government concerns aside, a few dozen protesters were waiting for US military vehicles as they traveled east along Brandenburg’s country roads.

“We didn’t want them just to pass by without any opposition,” Diana Golze, the labor and social affairs minister for the state of Brandenburg, who attended the demonstration, told DW. “We think this isn’t a good time for the relocation of troops to the border between Poland and Russia… There needs to be a diplomatic path, and not just saber-rattling.”

A local who attended the small demonstration with a sign reading “Amis go home” – a slightly pejorative term for Americans – told the German outlet: “We never experienced the Russians having evil intentions. And now trying to stir us all up against each other is not in the interests of German people — neither the people in the west or the east. There are other powers behind this that want us to fight each other.”

Another protester told DW: “I’m here to stop the madness of American soldiers being sent to the Russian border, but apparently hardly anyone is interested around here.”

The eastward-bound convoys follow 2015’s ‘Dragoon Ride’ exercises, in which around 120 vehicles, mainly Stryker AFVs, drove 1,770 kilometers through Estonia, Lithuania, Poland, Latvia, and the Czech Republic, with their final destination being Germany. Similar exercises were held a year later.

During their maneuvers, a number of convoys were confronted by protesters in cities and towns across Germany and the Czech Republic. At the time, Czechs were even reminded that throwing tomatoes or eggs at the US vehicles was punishable with up to three years in prison.

One particularly resourceful Czech resorted to a different tactic: He dropped his trousers and ‘mooned’ a passing convoy. The former lieutenant in the Czech Armed Forces said in an interview this week that he plans on organizing new acts of public disobedience to protest Prague’s continued culpability in US military actions that threaten European security.

Aid convoys to conflict areas may be passing on charitable funds to terrorist groups, the Charity Commission has warned.

The regulator said the convoys could be “abused” by terrorist supporters wanting to help extremist groups through money and other resources.

The Commission called on charities adopting them to carry out “additional regulatory scrutiny.”

It comes after two men were convicted last December of using charity convoys to Syria to funnel thousands of pounds to jihadists.

In July 2013, Syed Hoque, of Stoke-on-Trent, and Mashoud Miah, of east London, handed £3,000 ($ 4,000) to Hoque’s nephew, a member of Al-Nusra Front.

The Commission’s report pointed out how the aid convoys had been used by Hoque as “a cover for his support of an individual involved in terrorism in Syria.”

It accused the charity Shade of having “little or no due diligence or oversight” after it provided Hoque with an “open ended” letter of credentials which allowed him to travel to Syria.

Shade halted all contacts with Hoque following the findings.

Another organization raising charitable funds, Helping Humanity, was also found to have contacts with the other accused, Miah. It has since closed down.

In its report about Miah, the Commission said: “There is a risk that charitable aid convoys to Syria may be abused for non-charitable purposes, including facilitating travel for fighters or providing support for those involved in terrorism.

“This is of serious regulatory concern to the Commission and impacts on public trust and confidence in those charities and the charitable sector more generally.”

It follows reports of individual, anonymous public donations being the main source of support for Islamist extremists in the UK.

A government review revealed individuals in Britain are donating hundreds of thousands of pounds per year to radicals.

Home Secretary Amber Rudd said people are at risk of making donations without being fully aware or supportive of the organization’s agenda.

“Some Islamic organizations of extremist concern portray themselves as charities to increase their credibility and to take advantage of Islam’s emphasis on charity,” it said.

“Some are purposefully vague about their activities and their charitable status.”

Convoys of semi-autonomous trucks are expected to be tested on public roads in the UK before the end of next year, the government announced today. The Department for Transport and Highways England have rustled up £8.1 million in funding between them to pass on to the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL), the independent organisation that’ll conduct the trials. TRL will start with simulation studies and driver training before moving onto a test track and finally, public roads by the end of 2018.

Platooning, as it’s known, is one of the simpler ways of harnessing self-driving technology. While the truck at the front of a convoy remains under human control, trailing vehicles follow its lead autonomously. Wireless connections (aka vehicle-to-vehicle communication) keep all trucks talking to each other so the self-driving members of the conga line can immediately respond to changes in the lead lorry’s direction and speed.

With software managing the distance between vehicles, it should be possible to create a much tighter convoy than would be safe if human limbs were in charge of the wheel and pedals. This has the potential to ease congestion, but more importantly reduces drag on the trailing trucks, meaning better fuel efficiency and lower emissions.

TRL has already done some preliminary feasibility studies on the government’s instruction. In fact, platooning trials on UK motorways were originally due to start in late 2016, but the project has been delayed for one reason or another. At the time, the Financial Times reported that various manufacturers of heavy goods vehicles were just not particularly keen on taking part.

Several real-world trials of semi-autonomous convoys are taking place elsewhere, and TRL is looking at how these are addressing the technical and practical challenges of public platooning tests. There’s no substitute for conducting your own in situ, though, which is why TRL will investigate everything from fuel efficiency to safety, acceptance by drivers and the public, the suitability of UK infrastructure and future, commercial viability.
