A convoy has left Moscow’s UK embassy ahead of the Kremlin’s deadline for 23 diplomats to leave the country. The expulsions are in retaliation to sanctions imposed by the UK after the Skripal poisoning.

Colleagues were spotted embracing each other as vehicles to transport them were readied nearby, presumably to take them to the airport for a flight to the UK. The expulsions come only hours after the European Union recalled the bloc’s envoy from Moscow. The move was in solidarity with Britain following the attack on Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia, who were attacked with an A-234 nerve agent – also known as Novichok – in Salisbury on March 4.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists of Russia’s “regret” when asked about the EU’s decision to recall its Moscow envoy. Peskov said the EU was making decisions based on allegations made by the UK without evidence.

German automaker Daimler AG’s trucks division said it would test a new technology called “platooning” on U.S. roads, allowing large digitally-connected trucks to save fuel by driving closely together, with one vehicle following the other.

Daimler’s announcement, and promises on Monday by rivals Navistar International Corp and Volkswagen AG to field a medium duty electric truck by 2019, highlight a race among global commercial truck makers to deploy new technology both to anticipate regulatory mandates and influence policy debates.

Trucking industry executives are gathering this week at the North American Commercial Vehicle show in Atlanta as the U.S. medium and heavy truck market is emerging from a slump.

“We definitely are leaving 2017 with nice momentum,” Martin Daum, chief of Daimler’s commercial truck business, told Reuters on Monday.

The sales recovery is lifting share prices of companies in the commercial truck sector. But in a reflection of the digital fever that is gripping the consumer auto business, truck makers are using the trade show to highlight products that are a tiny part of today’s business, or not yet for sale.

Platooning technology is one example. Daimler’s North American truck unit said on Monday it received permission from the Oregon Department of Transportation to test its platooning technology on public roads after successful trials in its proving ground in Madras, Oregon.

In truck platooning, connectivity and automated driving improve safety within the vehicle convoys, support drivers and enhance efficiency with closer distances between the connected trucks, the company said, allowing them to draft off each other.

For now, Daum said, platooning offers the promise of improved fuel efficiency. Fleet operators will not get the full pay back for investments in the technology until regulations allow one driver to pilot a truck while drivers in the trucks behind sleep, and that is “a long way out,” Daum said.

Being able to keep trucks and cargo moving without having to stop for mandated rest breaks “would unleash a huge efficiency potential,” Daum said. “We don’t have the technical solution yet.”

Some companies, including Silicon Valley startup Peloton Technology, are working on this technology. Peloton is working with several truck makers, including Volvo, on its platooning system, which it sees as a precursor to autonomous systems.

Tesla, which has been a leader in developing self-driving technology for its luxury cars, is developing a long-haul, electric semi-truck that can drive itself and move in “platoons,” Reuters reported last month.

An attacker drove an explosives-laden vehicle towards a NATO convoy in Afghanistan on Monday. Several foreign troops and civilians were wounded in the incident in the Parwan Province, according to a NATO statement.

The injured soldiers were taken to the nearby Bagram Air Field, the Resolute Support Mission statement said, adding that neither of the injuries was life-threatening. The Afghan civilians were evacuated to a local hospital.

Reuters cited District Governor Abdul Shukor Qodossi as saying that three civilians were hurt in the attack. The official would not provide details about their condition.

A statement from Taliban militants claimed that the attack killed 13 American troops and left 11 injured. It also destroyed three armored vehicles, it said.

The US-led coalition said it may bomb a convoy of Islamic State militants who agreed to leave the Syria-Lebanon border and move towards Iraq under a deal brokered by Hezbollah, adding that it will not allow the terrorists to escape.

Coalition aircraft have already struck a bridge and punched a crater in a road to keep the convoy from moving toward the Iraqi border, Operation Inherent Resolve spokesman Colonel Ryan Dillon told AP.

The coalition “will not rule out strikes against IS fighters being moved,” Dillon said, adding, “we are not party to any agreements that were made by the Lebanese Hezbollah and ISIS or the (Syrian) regime.”

Any strike will be in accordance with “the law of armed conflict,” Dillon said.

The government in Damascus has repeatedly called coalition operations in Syria, carried out without its consent, a violation of Syrian sovereignty.

Hezbollah – a Shia Muslim political and military organization in Lebanon which the US has designated a terrorist organization – had brokered an agreement with IS (also known as ISIS/ISIL) militants, giving them a safe passage from an enclave on the Syrian border with Lebanon to IS-held territory near the Iraqi border.

“Irreconcilable ISIS terrorists should be killed on the battlefield, not bused across Syria to the Iraqi border without Iraq’s consent,” tweeted US Special Envoy for Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, Brett McGurk, who also spoke for the coalition’s efforts under the Obama administration.

“Our coalition will help ensure that these terrorists can never enter Iraq or escape from what remains of their dwindling “caliphate,” McGurk added.

Several critics have responded to the official’s tweets, noting that US-backed Syrian fighters gave IS terrorists a safe passage out of the city of Manbij last year.

“The agreement to let the Islamic State militants escape likely saved hundreds of civilians held by the fanatical fighters, even though it allowed some Islamic State militants to escape,” USA Today cited a senior US defense official last August.

The Trump administration, however, said it changed its tactics in the fight against the terrorist group.

“[Trump] directed a tactical shift from shoving ISIS out of safe locations in an attrition fight to surrounding the enemy in their strongholds so we can annihilate ISIS,” Defense Secretary James Mattis said in May.

He explained that by “taking the time up front to surround these locations, instead of simply shoving them from one to another” coalition forces are able to “carry out the annihilation campaign so we don’t simply transplant this problem from one location to another.”

Anyone important in the world will always have a convoy of cars when travelling for protection.

The Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzō Abe is no different.

However, as he attempted to merge onto a motorway, the men in his convoy of cars took it into their own hands to ensure his protection.

It is definitely a new way to make sure joining the motorway easier.

The video shows three men leaning out of their car windows of the convoy cars.

Clad in white gloves, they signal to other cars to move over and slow down whilst the Prime Minister’s car joins the motorway.

The polite hand gestures calmly point out drivers, asking them to reduce their speed.

The cars obviously obey and slow to an almost halt until the leading car makes it onto the road.

Imgur users were notably impressed with the way in which the convoy dealt with the merge.

One wrote: “I’ll be disappointed if I visit Japan and it’s not as weird as the internet makes it out to be.”

Others knew it wouldn’t have been so simple in other countries.

Another commented: “Try Thailand, where they’ll shut down an entire stretch of highway when any of the royal family is travelling.”

Many other users from the US also stated similar problems, with entire motorways being shut when the President is travelling.

However, one video shows how not to overtake on a motorway.

A car was caught on dash cam attempting a dangerous move whilst driving.

The driver tries to use the emergency lane to overtake the rest of the traffic. 

However, he ends up causing this dangerous crash.

A military convoy thought to have been carrying a nuclear warhead was left stranded on the side of the public M40 motorway on Monday when one of the vehicles escorting the weapon broke down.

According to anti-nuclear campaign group Nukewatch, the convoy was left stranded at a slip road near Bicester on Monday morning. The vehicles were making their way from the warhead assembly plant at Burghfield.

Nukewatch said the trucks were heading to Coulport on Loch Long, Scotland, where the warheads are stored and loaded aboard the Trident submarines.

The warhead itself is unlikely to have been armed, but the trucks could have been carrying high explosive materials and highly radioactive plutonium.

A police officer channeled traffic from the slip road onto a lane around the stopped convoy before closing it down. The stricken vehicle was then towed away by an armored personnel carrier (APC).

“The breakdown happened to an escort vehicle rather that one of the warhead carrying trucks but clearly any vehicle can have problems,” a Nukewatch spokesman said.

“The UK’s Ministry of Defence is allowed to carry explosive and radioactive materials in the same transport – a procedure rationally outlawed for civil transport.

“It is probably only a matter of time before we have a serious accident involving these convoys. The transport of these weapons shows a disturbing disregard for public safety, which is put in second place by the government’s determination to continue to deploy these horrific weapons of mass destruction.”

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) said it does not comment on operational details of military convoys.

MoD statistics show that high explosive materials, such as the ones used on Trident submarine warheads, have an impact range of 600 meters and that the radiological plume could reach as far as 5km (3.1 miles).

A suspected suicide blast in Mastung, in Pakistan’s southwestern province of Balochistan, has left 25 people dead and 35 injured, including Deputy Senate Leader Abdul Ghafoor Haideri.

Speaking to local media, Haideri, who has been moved to a military hospital in Quetta, said he was not seriously hurt and was saddened by the deadly attack. His convoy was the target of the roadside explosion, reported Reuters.

“We received 20 bodies so far and over 35 injured,” Shafi Zehri a doctor in Mastung told reporters.

Images corroborated by RT show the extent of the explosion, which destroyed Haideri’s vehicle.

Haideri, a member of Jamiat e Ulema Islam, a right-wing Sunni Islamist political party and part of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s coalition government. The deputy Senate leader reportedly requested an armored vehicle but one has not been provided.

Speaking to Reuters following the blast he said: “There are many casualties as there were many people in the convoy.”

Haideri’s driver was killed in the attack, which Mastung police official Ghazanfar Ali Shah said was carried out by a suicide bomber. The area of the explosion has been cordoned off by officials and an investigation is underway.

No-one has claimed responsibility for the attack in an area where many militant groups are known to be operating.

The UN Children’s Fund has condemned the killing of more than 60 children in a recent Aleppo bomb attack targeting evacuees.

“After six years of war and human carnage in Syria… six years of heartbreak for so many Syrian families… there comes a new horror that must break the heart of anyone who has one,” the statement by UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake said Sunday.

“More than 60 children reportedly killed in an attack on a bus convoy yesterday outside Aleppo. A convoy of families who for so long had already known so much suffering. Now the survivors must bear such a new and terrible loss,” the statement added.

Lake urged not only for regret, but for action to ensure that the war ends soon, saying, “We must draw from this not only anger, but renewed determination to reach all the innocent children throughout Syria with help and comfort. And draw from it also the hope that all those with the heart and the power to end this war will do so.”

While Syrian state media reported up to 40 fatalities on the day of the blast, on Monday the toll rose to 125 people killed, according to local human rights groups. The attack came at the same time as the Syrian government was carrying out the internationally-brokered evacuation of two towns.

“This is one of the worst, most horrifying massacres. We urge our president Assad to help us out. What happened can’t be described. Oh, dear God! We don’t know what to do,” a woman outside an Aleppo hospital told Ruptly on Saturday.

The reason that there were so many children among the victims is that the blast happened at the moment when children were gathering around a van distributing potato chips, according to RT’s Lizzie Phelan.

Two private security guards were wounded by a reported roadside bomb that hit a UN convoy in Mogadishu on Sunday.

The explosion struck 100 meters behind vehicles belonging to the UN’s World Food Programme (WFP), as workers returned from a drought-affected area on the outskirts of the Somali capital.

“We are investigating the incident including whether or not the convoy was the intended target,” spokesperson for the WFP Amor Almagro told RT. The two Somali security guards suffered minor injuries, Almagro said. 

“We are also concerned about the welfare of innocent bystanders who may have been harmed by the blast,” she added.

The militant Islamist group al-Shabaab has reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack.

“The occupants of the WFP vehicles are all safe although two private security guards were slightly wounded,” Almagro told RT. The occupants of the WFP vehicles were uninjured, with the two private security guards suffering only minor injuries.

Earlier this month, dozens of US troops arrived in Somalia as part of an operation to train forces fighting al-Shabaab, the largest deployment of US troops to the country since 1993 when 18 US soldiers died in a battle dramatized in the film ‘Black Hawk Down.’
