Living out of a van can be a lonely, cramped existence — yet some people are choosing it over life in a standard home. As real estate becomes more expensive in cities such as New York and San Francisco, young tech workers, retirees, and even families are turning to converted vans as a way to save on rent.

The phenomenon has taken off across numerous social channels. It’s now easy to find glamorous shots of van living on Instagram or idealistic blog posts touting a mobile lifestyle.

Though van dwelling may be a viable option for some, the reality is far less seductive than it’s made out to be. Many photos of converted vans show little room for anything other than a bed and a few storage bins. Vehicles that have been lived in for a while are often a cluttered mess, packed with stray belongings and portable fans.

An Israeli government committee’s recommendation to target “potential Jews” around the world to promote Israel, and even be converted, has been slammed by religious groups.

According to the committee, created by Israel’s Diaspora Affairs’ Ministry in 2016, there are 60 million people around the world who have an “affinity” to Judaism or Israel. The report includes a ‘strategic plan’ to target such people with the hope that some might even be converted.

It recommended providing learning materials about Judaism and Hebrew to these communities. It also floated the idea of harnessing these groups’ “public diplomacy to promote support for Israel and aid in the struggle against anti-Semitism.”

On Sunday, the committee called for the Israeli government to create a plan to identify those with links to Judaism but who are not eligible for immigration under Israel’s Law of Return, which allows Jews to immigrate to the state of Israel. This would include those with Jewish ancestors, such as the Marranos in Spain and Portugal who converted to Christianity, along with those who hid their Judaism from oppressive regimes.

The report divided its targets into five “circles of affinity.” The first group is “core” Jews, making up around 14 million. The second is nine million people who qualify under the law of return, the third group is “distant relatives” of Jews.

The fourth, of 35 million people, have “declared their affinity to the Jewish people,” and the fifth, of 60 million, have “future potential” as “descendants of Jews, descendants of forced converts, and additional communities with an affinity to the Jewish people but are not currently declaring so or are unaware of it.”

The idea was roundly criticized by Religious Zionist rabbis, who said missionaries are not part of Judaism. “According to Jewish law, Judaism has no interest in influencing someone to convert. There’s no such thing,” Rabbi Dov Lior told Haaretz.

The Times of Israel reports other Jews pointed to the fact that the government is more interested in expelling people who aren’t Jewish, like the African migrants being deported from Israel, than in creating new citizens.

While the ministry said the recommendations are yet to be adopted, they also responded to the reception by clarifying that the goal is to strengthen ties rather than push for mass conversions, Haaretz reports.

Minister for Diaspora Affairs Naftali Bennett commissioned the report and is a member of the right-wing Jewish Home Party.

Good news, everyone: we’re getting a new Shane Black movie this year. The filmmaker behind Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Iron Man 3, and The Nice Guys is roaring back with The Predator, a sequel to the stagnant sci-fi franchise about a race of alien hunters perpetually searching for worthy prey. Now we know the action is going to be even more immersive: co-writer Fred Dekker (The Monster Squad) has revealed that the film is getting the 3D treatment.

The Predator 3D Conversion

Dekker is currently in Vancouver working on reshoots (“touch-ups”) for The Predator. Earlier this week, he took a quick break to post a photo from the set:

In the comments section, a fan asked if the film would be converted to 3D, and Dekker responded by simply saying, “Yes.” The film wasn’t shot with 3D in mind, but like Iron Man 3 before it, it will receive a post-conversion to that format. That means you’ll be able to see the blood-soaked, 11-year-old Jacob Tremblay (Room) standing atop a pile of alien bodies, thrusting a severed Predator head out of the screen toward you in triumphant defiance. (That’s gotta be the ending of this movie, right?)

Elsewhere in the comments of the same post, the filmmaker promised that “a teaser trailer will be coming soon,” but failed to provide a more concrete timeline for when that might happen.

Tremblay stars alongside Jake Busey (who’s playing the son of Gary Busey’s Predator 2 character), Thomas Jane, Keegan-Michael Key, Olivia Munn, Boyd Holbrook, Edward James Olmos, Trevante Rhodes, Augusto Aguilera, Alfie Allen, and Yvonne Strahovski. Busey described the film as being “definitely in line with the original franchise,” and Jane revealed some plot details last year that make the film sound pretty wild:

“We play these veterans from like Afghanistan or the Iraq War or whatever. But we’re all fucking crazy so we go to the VA hospital to get our meds. We’re all like shellshocked, PTSD soldiers. We’re at the VA hospital and we’re in group therapy and of course, somebody flips out – this is backstory, I don’t think we really see this – somebody flips out and we all get arrested and get thrown onto the bus to go down to the hospital and they throw this other guy on the bus too.

And he’s a guy they’ve actually marked to kill him because he’s seen a UFO, he’s seen the Predator ships come down so they lock him up and throw him in with us lunatics. They’re going to take that bus, drive it down to a ditch and shoot us all just to get rid of this one guy. But, of course, we take the bus over and we’re all like ‘fuck that, man, let’s go kill these fucking Predators ourselves.’ And we’re just crazy enough to believe that this guy really did see a UFO and there’s these aliens out there. So that’s kinda cool!”

With a description like that, it’s no wonder the movie is one of /Film’s most anticipated films of 2018.

After a couple instances of reshuffling, The Predator will finally land in theaters on September 14, 2018.

Arthur Wagner, a German politician from the far-right political party Alternative for Germany (AfD), has resigned and converted to Islam, according to a party spokesman. Wagner confirmed his resignation to the German publication Der Tagesspiege.

Wagner was a leading member of the AfD in Germany’s eastern state of Brandenburg. He left the party on January 11, AfD chairman Andreas Kalbitz wrote in a Facebook post, adding the decision came as a surprise.

Kalbitz told CNN that Wagner had previously been active in the party’s Christian wing.

Wanger joined the AfD in 2015 and was a member of the Brandenburg committee responsible for religious communities and activities.

The AfD party is known for its far-right beliefs and said on its website that it is strongly anti-immigration and anti-Islam. Kalbitz wrote in an official AfD Facebook post on Wednesday that “Islam does not belong to Germany.”

The party had become the third most popular party in Germany since last year’s federal election, during which it won 12.6% of the vote.

ESKRIDGE, Kan. (AP) — A Cold War-era missile silo in rural northeast Kansas that housed a nuclear warhead 65 years ago and was later converted into an underground mansion is now finding a new lease on life as an Airbnb location.

The Subterra Castle Airbnb opened for business about six months ago. It’s located in rural Wabaunsee County, about 15 miles southwest of Topeka.

Airbnbs are privately owned residences that are offered online for short-term rental, The Topeka Capital-Journal reports.

Matthew Fulkerson, 37, is the host for Subterra, and said it was his idea to turn the site into an Airbnb. Fulkerson is a neighbor of Subterra’s owners, Ed and Dianna Peden, who have lived in the converted missile base since 1994 and are on board with the Airbnb idea.

More than being a place for people to stay when passing through Kansas, Fulkerson said he has a bigger vision for the site. “I see it as becoming a destination,” he said, adding that the base has already been featured in several media outlets.

In addition to a main-floor bedroom, Airbnb guests at Subterra will have a full kitchen, private bathroom, laundry services and a fireplace which gives a “nice, cozy feeling in the fall and winter months,” Fulkerson said.

He said he and the Pedens “are considering using both apartments upstairs and down” should Airbnb traffic pick up, “especially because some people really want the experience of sleeping underground.”

Fulkerson said Subterra is the first and currently the only Airbnb located in a converted missile silo.

The Dolls House originally occupied an alleyway between two houses until the space was filled with a pint-sized property. 

It has just 339 sq/ft of floorspace and boasts one bedroom, two reception rooms, a kitchen and shower room. 

Despite the lack of space, the cottage has an asking price of more than one quarter of a million pounds because of its stunning location. 

It is in the picturesque village of Porthleven, Cornwall, and has views of the sea as well as the iconic watchtower, which is regularly photographed when it gets smashed by waves during storms. 

The asking price works out at £737 per sq/ft – which is around the same as in Putney and Canary Wharf, according to Lonres which tracks property data in the capital. 

The Dolls House, which is though to be the smallest home in Porthleven, is also a successful holiday rental with tourists paying almost £500 per week during peak season to rent it out. 

It is on the market with The Mather Partnership. 

Helen Retallack, negotiator at the estate agency, said: “We understand from local knowledge that it was built later than the neighbouring properties having originally been an alleyway between the properties on either side. 

“We believe at one point it served as a local museum and was originally named ‘Box and Heater’ the name being changed to The Dolls House by the present vendors. 

“It was previously owned by the same family for many years serving as a family holiday home and now trades as a successful holiday rental with tourists paying almost £500 per week during peak season to rent it out. 

“The Dolls House is a fantastic opportunity to acquire a really quirky and picturesque property in a great location within this fantastic village which now boasts an array of eateries to include Rick Stein’s.” 

A three-bedroom home with two terraces was put on the market for almost £855,000 – despite being just seven-feet wide.

The unique property, which was built in the 1850s is believed to have originally been used as a Victorian laundry house. 

And while it was once detached, it is now an end-of-terrace property which has been converted into a surprisingly practical home. 

Floorpans show that at its widest, the home is seven-feet one-inch wide, yet it still has almost 1,000 sq/ft of space, making it larger than the average new build. 

This is thanks to accommodation being spread over four floors, with the kitchen and reception room on the ground floor.
