The family of soap opera vet Roscoe Born, who died last week at the age of 69, is revealing that the actor’s cause of death was suicide.

“Roscoe has long struggled with bipolar disorder, a shadow that he succumbed to when he took his own life on Tuesday March 3, 2020,” read the family’s statement, which was posted on Facebook. “We are grateful for the outpouring of kind words and memories. We only wish that Roscoe could have seen how much people still carry his daytime villains in their hearts. May his death remind us of the importance of opening up conversations around mental illness. May those who need help seek it. May those who seek help receive it. And may it serve them.”

Born’s myriad daytime-TV roles included Ryan’s Hope‘s Joe Novak, Santa Barbara‘s Robert Barr and Quinn Armitage (for which he earned a Daytime Emmy nod in 1990), All My Children‘s Jim Thomasen, The City‘s Nick Rivers, Passions‘ Warden, The Young and the Restless‘ Tom Fisher and, last but not least, One Life to Life‘s super-nefarious Mitch Laurence.

Last year, Google began rolling out a feature that let users message businesses through their Google profiles. Now, it’s integrating that feature into Google Maps. Any messages you’ve sent to businesses through their Google profiles will now be accessible in Maps for iOS and Android. Just tap the menu button, and then “Messages,” and you’ll be able to see those conversations without having to leave the app. Google is also bringing the messaging feature to more countries this week.

This is the latest in a series of recent updates to Google Maps. Google has also introduced a follow button, EV charging station info, a commute tab and the ability to plan group events.

There were many remarkable things about her, but the most startling, surely, was her age: She was 109. She was born as imperial China died—her arrival into this world coincided with two thousand years of dynastic rule giving way to a new republic. Over a century on, and she had lived through the entire history of modern China—indeed, she had aged in parallel with it. Even in a country of a billion people, there cannot be many who may lay such a claim.

She was sat on a wall when I saw her, hands clasped over a walking stick. She asked where I was headed, and what I was doing, and wondered if I was there on business. Snippets of her life story were whispered to me by other villagers who had gathered around our conversation. Finally, she leaned back slightly, to deliver her verdict:

“I wish you all the best, and that no illness falls upon you. And, may your wishes come true.”

There’s no guarantee that age brings wisdom, of course, nor that understanding or hospitality will follow. So I will not put her kindnesses simply down to the passing of time. Rather, it is the mark of her character, formed as it has been by whatever experiences those 109 years have brought along the way. To have been there, even briefly, was a privilege.

“We want to make the game inclusive and understand that our coaches’ responsibility is not to judge individuals on the face of things, but to create an environment where everyone feels respected and comfortable in a hockey arena,” said Phil McKee, executive director of the OHF.

The federation’s requirement was implemented under a settlement reached with the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario following a complaint filed by a transgender teen in 2013.

Jesse Thompson, a transgender player from Oshawa, Ontario, who was 17 at that time, brought the complaint to the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario after being forced to use a dressing room corresponding to his birth gender (female), not his identified gender (male).

Thompson’s complaint led to Ontario’s minor hockey branches modifying their dressing-room policies in 2014, allowing transgender athletes to use facilities aligned with their gender identity.

The OHF also made it obligatory to educate personnel on transgender inclusion to tackle discrimination based on gender identity.

Slack calls its channels for group chat and project management the workplace of the future, and today announced that channels shared between two companies can now be set to private. Even team administrators won’t be able to see files and conversations shared in private shared channels between specific employees or team members. Before today, shared channels were also visible to other team members.

Private shared channels may come in handy for limited company partnerships, or instances when a company works with consultants or external service providers. Private channels within a team or company were available before today to limit participation to specific people.

About one in three paying Slack customers have opted into the shared channels beta, a company spokesperson told VentureBeat in an interview. Slack first made the shared channels beta available last fall at Frontiers, its first developer conference.

Both teams in a private shared channel will be able to choose if they want the channel visible to their side’s other team members, product manager Sean Rose told VentureBeat in a phone interview.

“Each side controls the privacy levels so it could be public or private on either side without the other side necessarily dictating that we do that because the requirements from each side may be different,” he said. “Each team is going retain a copy of the data no matter what so they ultimately control the visibility of that even if they stop actively working together.”

Private shared channels is one in a set of new features being rolled out today by the enterprise chat app. Also announced today is the ability for admins at companies using Enterprise Grid to deploy read-only channels — channels users are required to join so they can see messages sent by executives or certain team members, but lock them out from sending any messages in response.

Slack launched Enterprise Grid one year ago with features designed to give companies with tens of thousands of employees the ability to use Slack companywide. Enterprise Grid was launched to compete with Workplace by Facebook, Microsoft Teams, and other team collaboration offerings. Slack declined to share the current number of Enterprise Grid customers.

Also today, Slack team administrators have a new place to manage shared channels. Admins who are not a member of a private shared channel will be unable to view the channel name or the conversations that take place, but they may be able to stop sharing between teams.

The capacity to require every member of a Slack team to see certain messages has always been available with the #general channel, the one channel included in every Slack team, but the move today extends that ability to any channel for Enterprise Grid customers.

With each of the new features added today, Rose said, “the key idea is that we’re trying to take what we built with channels and meet our customers with the different use cases we’re seeing with them, because we believe this is the way people are going to be working in the future.”

These expansions to shared channels comes ahead of other features likely on the way, such as shared channels for collaboration between Enterprise Grid customers and the ability for shared channels to include more than two teams.

Soon, your chats on Skype can be just as secure as conversations on Signal, the service used by US Senators. Microsoft is integrating the open source Signal protocol, used by WhatsApp, Google, Facebook and Signal itself, into test versions of Skype as ‘Private Conversations‘ for end-to-end encrypted communications.

There are a few restrictions: You can’t turn an existing chat into a Private Conversation, and must start each one by sending a request to one of your contacts. They don’t carry over between devices, so if you switch platforms, you’ll have to send a whole new request. And finally, Private Conversations are currently available in preview only for Skype Insiders, the service’s beta tester community.

As we enter 2018, it’s clear the expectations of intelligent assistance providers and enterprise practitioners are more in balance than ever before. It’s also clear that the number of “known knowns” is growing rapidly.

Here are five examples of how and why we will learn more about the complex workings of conversational commerce in the coming year.

1. Intelligent assistants (IAs) can do a lot right out of the box

Solution providers have access to a history of FAQs, recordings, call detail records (CDRs), chat transcripts, product literature, CRM records, and even interactive voice response (IVR) scripts to inform IAs on the basic intents of customers in the top vertical categories. Even if you are not Google, Facebook, or another one of the tech giants that benefit from exposure to inconceivably large data sets, it’s possible to access quality insights about your consumers. Big data is no longer required to get started in conversational commerce.

2. Humans prove long-term value in onboarding, training, and tuning

IAs have a near immediate negative impact on operating costs and positive impact on customer satisfaction, but their ability to replace live agents and assistants is vastly overrated. To the contrary, the need to monitor and constantly tune responses to keep them relevant and satisfactory to prospects and customers is growing and will provide a source of new of jobs and permanent employment.

3. Managing true conversations comes next

Categorization? √ Understanding? √ Conversation? Nope! Some solution providers are better than others at recognizing context, promoting turn-taking, and allowing customers’ minds to wander and jump around topics, but the game board is still largely governed by statistics and branches on logic trees that can come up empty. When that happens, IAs are no better than poorly designed, frustrating IVR apps. Watch for some real advancements to correct this situation in 2018.

4. Then we can hurdle the walled gardens of #ConvComm

It’s a shame that the branded Big Four (and other heavy hitters in the tech industry) have elected to create separate and unequal “platforms” for messaging bots and voice first agents. Companies would like to see intelligent assistance infrastructure that lets them develop a service once and have it render correctly on all devices and in all modes. Instead, in the short-to-medium term, we are stuck with the same, duplicated efforts that plague mobile apps (iOS versus Android – and a few, lesser others). Separate staffs maintain the code base for Alexa skills versus Google actions, Facebook Messenger bots, and a few, lesser others.

5. Our reach will exceed our grasp

Now that we’ve tackled the “known knowns,” we can expect start-ups and stealthy entrepreneurs to emerge in 2018 to tackle “known unknowns.” They will do this by blending machine learning, natural language processing, knowledge management, and other elements of AI with the human touch. Some might even expose and exploit the “unknown knowns.” Their nature is to be determined, but there is always room for break-through technologies. At the very minimum, solutions will span the traditional lines of demarcation between customer care, marketing, user ID, and authentication and relationship management platforms.

Adoption and use of conversational commerce will accelerate in 2018. Forces are aligning for people to employ conversational technologies at home, in their cars, and in their offices. It’s up to solution providers to manage the complexity of underlying processes to keep it simple for end users and enterprises alike.
