After feeling the heat from his co-stars, 9-1-1 star Ryan Guzman has taken to social media to address his defense of using racial slurs.

In an Instagram video posted on Monday, Guzman — who plays firefighter Eddie Diaz on the Fox procedural — first said, “I do not condone the use of the N-word by any non-Black person. That includes all Latinos. That’s not our word.” (He also pointed out that stars like Cardi B and Fat Joe have used the word in the past without experiencing the same backlash.) He added that when he used the word “slurs,” “I came from an angry place. I couldn’t think straight, and I misspoke.” He was defending his fiancée Chrysti Ane and his one-year-old son, he said, who were facing death threats and “foul-ass language” from people online.

He meant to say “stereotypes” instead of “slurs,” he went on to say, reiterating that “amongst friends, can friends make fun of each other? Yes.” But he added, “I’m not here to bring anybody down,” before underlining the fact that his fiancée used the word years ago, when she was a teenager: “I think she’s grown as a woman.” He went on to say: ‘I apologize to those that I have offended and misrepresented myself by using the wrong term… I will continue to grow, and continue to help out the community.”

The controversy began when Guzman defended his fiancée in an Instagram Live on Sunday after old tweets of hers were unearthed in which she used the N-word. Guzman stated that he and his friends of other ethnicities “call each other slurs all the time. We don’t get butthurt at all because we know the actual person. We know who each other are.” Guzman’s 9-1-1 co-star Oliver Stark condemned Guzman’s words, saying “there is absolutely no excuse for the use of the N-word… I absolutely don’t agree with it being used by anyone else under any circumstances.”

Aisha Hinds, who plays firefighter Hen on 9-1-1, tweeted in response as well: “How I FEEL daily is a perpetual state of GRIEF. There’s sadly no version of this indefensible discourse that doesn’t exacerbate that grief. There’s legions of learned behaviors that need to be named and neutered so we don’t continue to give life to them. May we know & DO BETTER.”

The options were: Le Mans 24 Hours, Monaco Grand Prix, Indy 500 or Isle of Man TT.

Andrew asked to phone his friend Elsa but not to tell her what was a stake if they got the question wrong.

They rang Elsa and Andrew read her the question but she had no idea what the answer was. He ultimately decided not to risk his £500,000 and headed home with half a million pounds.

However, in a moment of agony, Jeremy asked him what he would’ve said and Andrew admitted he would have opted for Isle of Man TT.

Game of Thrones showrunners to make surprise HBO return after season 8 controversy https://briefnews.eu/game-of-thrones-showrunners-to-make-surprise-hbo-return-after-season-8-controversy/ https://briefnews.eu/game-of-thrones-showrunners-to-make-surprise-hbo-return-after-season-8-controversy/#respond Tue, 10 Mar 2020 05:53:12 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/game-of-thrones-showrunners-to-make-surprise-hbo-return-after-season-8-controversy/

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were criticised by fans for their rushed and divisive finale of Game of Thrones. However, despite last year’s fallout, it appears the writing pair will be making a surprising return to both HBO and Sky very soon.

The finale episode of George R.R. Martin and HBO’s fantasy epic, The Iron Throne was praised as an ambitious and epic conclusion to the sprawling saga.

Unfortunately, many fans were left unimpressed by the episode’s rushed pacing, leaps in logic and disappointing twists.

A considerable number of viewers also felt the drop in quality was felt throughout the final two seasons, as Benioff and Weiss were forced to make more story decisions once the series overtook Martin’s original books.

Even though Benioff and Weiss took the brunt of fans’ criticism, it hasn’t stopped them maintaining a solid relationship with HBO.

Now a recent announcement from Entertainment Weekly reveals the pair will be making a surprise appearance on the network before the arrival of their next project.

Writers and producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are confirmed to have cameos in the second episode of Westworld, season three.

The next season of the cerebral science fiction reboot is set to premiere on March 15.

The writing duo will portray technicians at Delos, the sinister android manufacturing company at the centre of Westworld’s gripping mysteries.

As always it will star Evan Rachel Wood as Dolores Abernathy, who infiltrates the real world to get revenge on her creators.

New stars for season three include Breaking Bad alum Aaron Paul, Queen and Slim writer Lena Waithe and French film icon Vincent Cassel.

Thandie Newton, Jeffrey Wright, Tessa Thompson and Ed Harris will also all be reprising their roles from the previous two seasons.

After making their surprise appearance, Benioff and Weiss will be saying goodbye to the world of fantasy for their new project.

In 2019 they signed an exclusive $ 200million deal with Netflix, exiting their previous deal with Disney to produce a new Star Wars trilogy.

Their first series for the streaming platform will be called The Chair, which they are executive producing.

In the upcoming series, Killing Eve star Sandra Oh will play the chair of an English department at a major university.

Westworld season 3 premieres on HBO on March 15 and on Sky Atlantic on March 16.

America’s Got Talent Addresses Gabrielle Union Exit Controversy, Plans to ‘Hear More About Her Concerns’ https://briefnews.eu/americas-got-talent-addresses-gabrielle-union-exit-controversy-plans-to-hear-more-about-her-concerns/ https://briefnews.eu/americas-got-talent-addresses-gabrielle-union-exit-controversy-plans-to-hear-more-about-her-concerns/#respond Sun, 01 Dec 2019 21:53:57 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/americas-got-talent-addresses-gabrielle-union-exit-controversy-plans-to-hear-more-about-her-concerns/

NBC and the producers of America’s Got Talent have vowed to “hear more” about the workplace culture concerns that allegedly led to Gabrielle Union’s dismissal from the series.

First, some background: In late November, it was reported that Union and Julianne Hough — both of whom had joined AGT as judges in Season 14 — would not be returning for the 15th cycle. Though it was initially unclear why the pair was leaving, NBC sources told the entertainment news site LoveBScott that there is a racist and sexist culture backstage at the reality series, and that Union specifically was allegedly let go after speaking out about “problematic” situations on set.

When it comes to judges, “They only replace the women and blacks at [executive producer] Simon [Cowell]’s whim. [Union] wouldn’t walk away from $ 12 million because she’s ‘busy,’” a source told the site. “The idea the network wants to ‘switch things up’” — as NBC initially claimed — “only applies to women and black folks.”

Our sister site Variety later reported that Union and Hough had been subject to a “toxic culture” at the show, including excessive notes on their appearance (including a specific critique that Union’s hairstyles were “too black”). Union also reportedly clashed with producers about a contestant whose material she found racially insensitive. Said performer was ultimately allowed to try out, though his audition was later cut from the final broadcast.

After Union and Hough’s exits were first reported, NBC and series producer Fremantle had issued a statement asserting that AGT “has a long history of inclusivity and diversity,” while “the judging and host lineup has been regularly refreshed over the years.”

But on Sunday, NBC, Fremantle and the production company Syco put out a new statement, obtained by our sister site Deadline: “We remain committed to ensuring a respectful workplace for all employees and take very seriously any questions about workplace culture. We are working with Ms. Union through her representatives to hear more about her concerns, following which we will take whatever next steps may be appropriate.”

Interestingly, despite reports of a negative work environment at AGT, Hough denied to Variety that she had experienced toxic behavior while on the show: “I had a wonderful time on America’s Got Talent… working with the cast, crew and producers. I am happy to continue my working relationship with NBC.”

Stacey Dooley’s gun trade documentary dropped by BBC amid IS brides controversy https://briefnews.eu/stacey-dooleys-gun-trade-documentary-dropped-by-bbc-amid-is-brides-controversy/ https://briefnews.eu/stacey-dooleys-gun-trade-documentary-dropped-by-bbc-amid-is-brides-controversy/#respond Wed, 07 Aug 2019 10:27:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/stacey-dooleys-gun-trade-documentary-dropped-by-bbc-amid-is-brides-controversy/

The BBC have decided to postpone Stacey Dooley’s latest documentary in the aftermath of two shootings in the United States.

Her latest documentary titled Face To Face With The Arms Dealers investigates the gun trade in America.

But after thirty one people were killed in two shootings that took place within 12 hours of each other in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio, the BBC decided to pull it from schedules.

The decision comes after the BBC were forced to apologise when Stacey wrongly described an Islamic prayer gesture as an ISIS salute in a Panorama episode.

In a voiceover for Panorama: Stacey Meets the IS Brides, she said: “As we left the camp, we saw women raising their index finger in an IS salute.”

However the group of women who were pointing at the sky were actually performing a traditional Islamic prayer gesture.

Stacey spent time with the women whilst visiting a Syrian refugee camp for the documentary.

Face To Face With The Arms Dealers is currently not available on BBC iPlayer but the BBC’s website does give an insight into what viewers can expect from the upcoming documentary.

In the programme, Stacey meets a family of Arms Dealers who live in Arkansas in the United States.

The family sell weapons to over 100 countries and the Strictly Come Dancing champion visits them to discuss their controversial career.

The documentary maker will also get to shoot one of the world’s most powerful sniper rifles.

According to The Sun, the BBC believe it’s appropriate to postpone the documentary and a date for its released will be confirmed soon.

In other Stacey news, the dancing champion has teased her own return to the Strictly dance floor.

During an appearance on BBC Breakfast, Stacey was on the sofa when the sixth celebrity was announced for this year’s show.

Last Friday BBC Breakfast presenter Mike Bushell was revealed he would be toe-tapping his way on to the Strictly dance floor.

However just before the announcement was made, Stacey joked she was going to be the next celebrity to be revealed.

As Ben Thompson and Steph McGovern got ready to make the reveal, Stacey jumped in and made a cheeky suggestion of her own.

Referring to the picture of GlitterBalls behind them, Steph remarked: “GlitterBalls and a champion on the sofa as well.”

Stacey then joked: “I’m doing it again!”

“Could you imagine,” Steph quipped before adding: “All of the other contestants would be like, ’Nooooo.’”

Strictly Come Dancing returns next month on BBC One.

New ‘Die Hard’ Trailer Leans into the Whole Christmas Controversy https://briefnews.eu/new-die-hard-trailer-leans-into-the-whole-christmas-controversy/ https://briefnews.eu/new-die-hard-trailer-leans-into-the-whole-christmas-controversy/#respond Wed, 19 Dec 2018 18:48:57 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/new-die-hard-trailer-leans-into-the-whole-christmas-controversy/ Die Hard Christmas Trailer

Frustratingly enough, the argument about whether or not the classic action thriller Die Hard is a Christmas movie is still going strong. A recent poll showed most people don’t think it qualifies for the holiday mantle, and we’ve had passionate discussions about it on /Film Daily, but now 20th Century Fox is making the push to have Die Hard entered into the Christmas canon by not only calling it the “greatest Christmas story ever told,” but by releasing a new holiday edition of the movie, and a trailer to really hit it home.

Watch the Die Hard Christmas trailer below and continue this exhausting fight.

Die Hard Christmas Trailer

The trailer cuts the movie more like something akin to Home Alone. Even greater is that it brings back the use of Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy,” which, much like Die Hard, isn’t explicitly a Christmas song, but can easily be played during the holiday season and provides great joy to everyone.

If that’s not enough to push the Die Hard Christmas agenda, 20th Century Fox also delivered this poem:

Twas the night before Christmas, at Nakatomi Plaza,
The office party was festive, but soon interrupted by drama.
Hans Gruber and his men, had forced their way in,
And taken everyone hostage, trapping them within.
But how could they know, there was a cop up above,
John McClane had arrived, to win back his wife’s love.
He would take them all out, winning everyone’s praise,
Welcoming Christmas Day, with his favorite catchphrase.

YIPPEE KI YAY!

If this has you itching for a Christmas rewatch of Die Hard, there’s also a special 30th anniversary Blu-ray release of the movie that has a cover looking like an ugly Christmas sweater. On top of that, all five of the Die Hard movies are also available on 4K HD Blu-ray right now.

Gab, the “free speech” social media site that’s popular with the alt-right, is back online.

“We will never get [sic] up, we will never give in,” founder Andrew Torba wrote in a Sunday evening post on the site. “Free speech and liberty will always win.”

Gab was forced offline in the wake of last month’s deadly shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh. The shooter appears to have been a Gab user, and his final Gab post prior to the shooting attacked the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, a non-profit refugee resettlement group: “HIAS likes to bring invaders in that kill our people. I can’t sit by and watch my people get slaughtered. Screw your optics, I’m going in.”

Child’s Hitler Halloween costume unleashes storm of controversy (PHOTO) https://briefnews.eu/childs-hitler-halloween-costume-unleashes-storm-of-controversy-photo/ https://briefnews.eu/childs-hitler-halloween-costume-unleashes-storm-of-controversy-photo/#respond Sat, 27 Oct 2018 14:11:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/childs-hitler-halloween-costume-unleashes-storm-of-controversy-photo/

A Kentucky father has been barracked into an apology after his Nazi themed halloween family photo unleashed a barrage of criticism on social media.

After initially taking a belligerent stance Kentucky man Brant Goldbach now says that he regrets dressing his five-year-old son as Adolf Hitler for the family photo, in which he was dressed as a Nazi soldier.

Goldbach posted photos of the Halloween costumes during a local trick or treat event on Thursday. He initially attempted to justify the costumes by saying that he and his son love dressing as “historical figures” and he condemned those who approached and threatened him and his son during the party.

“Anyone who knows us knows that we love history, and often dress the part of historical figures,” he wrote in the now deleted post.

Tonight as we walked we saw people dressed as murderers, devils, serial killers, blood and gore of all sorts. Nobody batted an eye. But my little (son) and I, dress as historical figures, and it merits people not only making snide remarks, but approaching us and threatening my little 5-year-old boy.

Unsurprisingly people didn’t take kindly to the Goldbach’s costume choice and countless people took to social media to berate the father.

“This poor guy dressed himself and his kids as historical figures for halloween and got a load abuse. unbelievable, the costumes can’t be that ba…. okay never mind,” Twitter user Dan Hett joked.

Following the backlash the jewelry store owner later apologized for his actions and said he didn’t realize the costume would “stir so much controversy.” He admitted he hadn’t thought the costume through and conceded it was in “bad taste.”

“I think it was in bad taste for me to let my child to wear that, probably for me to wear that. It didn’t occur to me. I thought it was a bad decision on my part,” said Goldbach to the TriStateHomepage.com.

How ‘the Forrest Gump of Republican politics’ Brett Kavanaugh became the Supreme Court’s most embattled justice in decades, after controversy over sexual misconduct allegations https://briefnews.eu/how-the-forrest-gump-of-republican-politics-brett-kavanaugh-became-the-supreme-courts-most-embattled-justice-in-decades-after-controversy-over-sexual-misconduct-allegations/ https://briefnews.eu/how-the-forrest-gump-of-republican-politics-brett-kavanaugh-became-the-supreme-courts-most-embattled-justice-in-decades-after-controversy-over-sexual-misconduct-allegations/#respond Sun, 07 Oct 2018 11:35:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/how-the-forrest-gump-of-republican-politics-brett-kavanaugh-became-the-supreme-courts-most-embattled-justice-in-decades-after-controversy-over-sexual-misconduct-allegations/ brett kavanaughChip Somodevilla/Getty Images

  • The Senate voted 50-48 on Saturday to confirm President Donald Trump’s nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, to the Supreme Court.
  • Kavanaugh’s nomination appeared to be in jeopardy for weeks, after multiple women came forward to publicly accuse him of sexual misconduct in high school and college. Kavanaugh has denied the allegations in statements and testimony.
  • But several key senators on Friday announced they intended to vote for him on Saturday regardless, paving the way for his confirmation.

After several tumultuous weeks of uncertainty, Judge Brett Kavanaugh has been confirmed to the Supreme Court on Saturday.

The Senate voted 50-48 on Saturday to confirm Kavanaugh, after several days of speculation over how key senators viewed as “swing votes” would decide. Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine and Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia were pivotal in confirming Kavanaugh, voting “yes,” while Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski opposed his confirmation.

But the multiple sexual misconduct allegations lodged against Kavanaugh in recent weeks still hangs over Saturday’s news, prompting furious backlash from the protesters who for weeks lobbied Collins, Manchin, and other senators to vote against Kavanaugh’s confirmation.

Christine Blasey Ford, 51, accused a teenaged Kavanaugh of forcing himself on her at a high school party in the early 1980s. Deborah Ramirez, a former Yale University classmate of Kavanaugh’s, said Kavanaugh exposed himself to her without her consent at a dorm-room party during his freshman 1983-84 school year.

Kavanaugh categorically denied Ford and Ramirez’s accounts in separate statements before delivering a fiery testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee. An additional FBI background check into the allegations concluded less than a week later with no corroboration for the accounts.

Kavanaugh was born and bred in the Washington, DC area and has a long history in conservative circles. Top Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin once called Kavanaugh the “Forrest Gump of Republican politics,” because he was present for so many key moments in modern political history.

As the final vote for Kavanaugh’s confirmation approaches, here’s a look at how the born-and-bred conservative rose to become the court’s most pivotal nomination in decades:
