While Facebook’s Oculus Quest won’t arrive until the spring of 2019, its seemingly beefier inside-out tracking plus 6DoF controllers may already pose a threat to HTC’s Vive Focus, as well as to other Vive Wave-based standalone VR headsets — including Pico’s Neo (whose ultrasound-based 6DoF controllers are still missing) and the more recent G2.

As such, HTC’s first order of business is to release a developer kit for adding not one, but two 6DoF controllers to substitute the Vive Focus’ single 3DoF controller — one that relies on software to simulate a 6DoF feel, but also often requires re-centering.

At the World Conference on VR Industry in Nanchang, China today, HTC announced this new “Vive 6DoF Developer Kit” which includes a pair of 6DoF controllers, plus a tracking attachment that goes on top of the Vive Focus. Much like how developers can port their two-handed VR experiences to single-controller VR headsets via Vive Wave, this time they can even preserve two-handed controls thanks to this dev kit.

For some reason, HTC is staying mum on how the 6DoF controller tracking works here; all we can see is the circular object on top of each controller, and the attachment gently bulges around a good part of the headset’s main body — likely for ensuring maximum coverage for tracking both controllers.

In a video clip provided by HTC’s China President, Alvin Wang Graylin, the 6DoF controllers appear to respond well even with his wide range of movements — he has incredibly long limbs — in Beat Saber, though I would have liked to see him try a faster song just to push the hardware a little further.

Until now, the Vive Focus has only been made available in China, and HTC’s also opened a flagship store in Shenzhen to help push its VR products. Meanwhile, the company is about to offer its Vive Focus to business customers in Japan starting from October 30th. But if all goes well, the company should still be pushing for an international rollout some time this year, especially with all the handy updates plus upcoming accessories made just for this headset.

While PC gamers enjoy many benefits over using a console, the latest Steam stats released by Valve show there’s a shared appreciation for one thing: console gamepads. According to Valve, since 2015 when it released an update allowing players to map gamepad inputs to any combination a game understands, over 30 million of its players have registered a controller, and about half of them have registered more than one.

Xbox 360 and Xbox One pads combine to represent over 40 million of the controllers used, compared to about 16 million between the PS3 and PS4, which have trailed in the amount of built-in support. The big surprise in the stats is apparently Nintendo’s Switch Pro, which has risen steadily to the 7th-most used spot despite only unlocking full support in May. Even the Steam Controller gets a mention — despite only selling 1.3 million of them, Valve said it’s the one used with the highest number of different games on its platform.

The timing of this announcement is interesting, as the Xbox One finally moves toward supporting mouse and keyboard in games where the developer’s choose to allow it, Valve releases data encouraging developers to think of gamepad-using players on PC.

After a delay in light of a Japanese earthquake, Nintendo’s latest Direct video presentation finally went live on Thursday evening, and it included confirmations of long-rumored games and ports for the Nintendo Switch—along with a surprise NES controller pack launching next week.

Coming September 18, the same day as the new paid Nintendo Switch Online service, the NES Controllers two-pack will be sold exclusively at Nintendo.com for $ 59.99—and you’ll need to be a paying Switch Online subscriber to place an order. These controllers connect wirelessly to Switch consoles, and they also include latches to hook to the sides of a Switch console, but Nintendo advertises this solely as a controller-charging feature. Meaning, you won’t be able to use these NES controllers in traditional Switch games—particularly when you might prefer a traditional D-pad over the Joy-Cons’ clicky buttons.

Valve’s latest beta client activates the Steam Controller’s Bluetooth Low Energy function — a necessary feature if you want to use the gamepad to play on a mobile device in the near future. If you’ll recall, the company recently announced that Steam Link will be able beam games to the dedicated iOS and Android apps it’s releasing during the week of May 21st. That means you’ll soon be able to play on a phone, tablet or TV, so long as it’s on the same 5GHz network as the host PC or it’s connected to the computer via Ethernet cable.

The Steam Controller is actually paired with a wireless dongle, and Valve still recommends using it whenever possible, since it provides the fastest connection. However, the option to connect via Bluetooth will enable you to use the gamepad with any mobile device or laptop without a USB port. You can use it even with devices that do have USB ports, though, in case you lose or forget the controller’s tiny receiver. Valve says the gamepad’s BLE connection is “excellent,” so it’ll probably do the trick unless you’re playing a game where you absolutely can’t risk lags. (In case the gamepad’s receiver is also plugged in, you can easily switch between the two modes whenever you want.)

To get the Bluetooth feature, you’ll have to opt into the latest Steam Client Beta and choose to “update firmware now,” as you can see in the image above. Considering it’s a beta feature, you can expect to encounter bugs and kinks that still need to be worked out — you can always wait for the final release if you’d rather not risk it.
