On Friday, the family of astronomer Frank Drake announced that he passed away peacefully at 92 in his California home, near the site of his final academic position at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Drake made a number of contributions to radio astronomy, including serving as director of the Arecibo radio telescope facility. But Drake is probably best known for an equation that bears his name and his subsequent involvement in SETI efforts. His equation was the first significant attempt to estimate the probability of intelligent extraterrestrial life.

Drake did his PhD in radio astronomy, and his academic career continued with astronomy as a focus. That eventually brought him to the Arecibo observatory. Drake was involved in the observatory’s conversion from a military research site to a civilian, science-focused facility, and he later became its director.

But Drake always had a side hustle: the attempt to find other intelligent life in the Universe. His most prominent contribution in this area was the formulation of what’s now known as the Drake equation. It’s purportedly a calculation—plug in the probabilities of a handful of things like the frequency of exoplanets around stars and the probability of life forming spontaneously, and out would pop the overall number of intelligent civilizations in our galaxy.

Pension rules in the UK have changes as of today, meaning you may take home less in your pay packet, but your pension will increase.

You could actually add £100,000 to your savings, as the government forces Britons to save more of their take home salary.

Today (April 6) the state requires that five per cent of your salary is put towards your pension.

Workers will be expected to put a minimum of three per cent of their salary away, with the employer topping up the other two per cent.

Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis has revealed he thinks this is one of the best savings plans, but how does it work?

The government explained on its website: “Under automatic enrolment, minimum pension contributions are required to increase over time.

“By law, on 6 April 2018, employers must have increased the amount of their minimum contributions into their staff’s automatic enrolment pension to at least two per cent of qualifying earnings.

“Staff members will have to make up whatever shortfall remains of the new total minimum contribution up to five per cent, including the employer’s contribution.”

The amount will rise even further on 6 April 2019 to a whopping eight per cent, with workers forced to save five per cent of their salary.

However, the rate on interested offered on such pensions schemes cannot be found elsewhere.

State pension 2018 changes

There will also be in increase in state pensions next month, the biggest jump since April 2012.

From April 6, 2018, eligible pensioners will see the state pension rise to £125.97 per week.

Pensioners who are entitled to the full new state pension will see their payments increase from £159.55 to £164.35 per week.

The change means eligible pensioners will be nearly £250 better off by the end of the tax year.

Their annual income will be increase from £8,296.60 to £8,546.20.

Pension age – what is it?

The state pension age is the age you can start to receive your state pension.

It depends on your gender and date of birth.

Individuals can check their state pension on the government website www.gov.uk/state-pension-age.

The Isa deadline 2018 is also a change that Britons need to pay attention to, to make the most of their money.

What is an ISA?

An ISA is an Individual Savings Account which lets Britons save money tax free.

You can hold shares, and unit trusts free of tax on dividends, interest, and capital gains in an ISA.

A complaint against Bernie Sanders filed by a Hillary Clinton’s super PAC was dismissed by a Federal Elections Committee, which ruled that the misdemeanor of accepting an “excessive” $ 7,462 of contributions during his bid for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination was insignificant.

The complaint by Brad Woodhouse, founder of the American Democracy Legal Fund and president of the pro-Clinton super political action committee (PAC) – Correct the Record – was filed on April 8 2016, but only became public on Friday.

The commission made their decision on April 20 2017, telling Woodhouse that they “voted to dismiss the allegation.”

Woodhouse had alleged that Sanders and his campaign treasurer Susan Jackson had received excessive contributions to their campaign. Title 52 of federal campaign finance rules no individual can contribute over $ 2,700.

The committee found that Sanders campaign indeed received and had not timely refunded excessive sums totalling $ 7,462.

The committee dismissed the allegation on the grounds that the excessive amount was insignificant compared to the “the tens of millions of dollars,” adding that “almost all” of the excessive contributions were cured within 120 days.

Sanders campaign had vocally ridiculed the accusation back in 2016, telling MSNBC that “just one day after the Clinton campaign said we needed to change our tone, the leaders of their coordinated super PAC, which is funded by millions from Wall Street, filed baseless and frivolous complaints with the FEC. Tells you all you need to know.”

Sanders would lose to Clinton in the Democratic party’s primaries, before Clinton would ultimately lose her party’s bid for presidency to Donald Trump.
