Life expectancy in America has declined for the second year in a row, and figures show that powerful painkillers were affecting it as opioids played a bigger role in overdose deaths last year than any other legal or illegal drug.
According to a recent report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there were over 63,600 drug overdose deaths in the US in 2016. In comparison, 58,220 US soldiers died during the more than decade-long Vietnam War.
RT discussed the opioid crisis in the US with Richard Ausness, Associate Dean for Faculty Research and Stites & Harbison Professor of Law at the University of Kentucky College of Law, who has written about the failure to prosecute drug companies.
“The federal government is going to have to take the lead in developing the policy to combat opioid addiction. On the other hand, it is going to take a lot of money and a lot of time. And I am not sure that we are there yet. I think a lot of work needs to be done developing a policy before we’ll see much of the improvement,” Ausness said.
Ausness pointed out that the culture is the contributing factor: “in many of the areas the country that has the worst problem with opioids – there is a tendency to use drugs, either legal drugs or illegal drugs, or to abuse them.”
“I think, that doctors tend to prescribe opioids when there is private health insurance perhaps more so than in Europe where there are government programs,” he noted.
According to Ausness, the part of the problem is that the drug companies developed lobby at the medical profession.
“And [they] developed a demand among doctors to prescribe these drugs for chronic pain which they weren’t really designed to be used for. That perhaps has as much to do with that as direct to consumer advertising,” he continued.
In his view, drug companies are largely responsible for the crisis.
“They facilitated the distribution of drugs to pain clinics which were very common at one time in certain parts of the country, and they certainly encouraged doctors to prescribe drugs and patients to use them in inappropriate ways,” Ausness explained.
In Ausness’s opinion, the drug companies downplayed the addiction risks associated with the opioid use.
“And therefore both physicians and patients were somewhat misled about the risks. Clearly, an educational program would have helped that, and certainly, it is needed now to try to prevent the problem from getting any worse,” he concluded.
Stress, anxiety, and uncertainty caused by many factors, including growing economic disparity, have contributed to the opioid crisis, says Andrew Tatarsky, an American psychologist, founder and director of The Center for Optimal Living.
“Since 9/11 the US has been in the state of perpetual war. And increasingly we’ve had a growing economic disparity that has created tremendous economic uncertainty and suffering. More recently, we are amidst the political divisiveness and conflict which I think has created what some people have called “the age of anxiety in the US.” We’ve got a tremendous amount of stress, anxiety and uncertainly that increased people’s vulnerability to turn to substances to cope, to manage, to escape, to feel better,” he told RT.
“We are a country, a culture that tends to look for quick fixes, for simple solutions and particularly, as it relates to drug use, we think that drug users are criminals or they are morally defective, and we stigmatize them,” Tatarsky explained.
“We offer them inadequate treatments: the focus on drugs as a solution rather than looking at human problems and suffering in a much more complex and nuanced way…The overemphasis and drug prescribing rather than seeking more comprehensive, more complex solutions both to the problem of addiction, but more generally to the problems of human suffering,” he told RT.

Playboy magazine founder Hugh Hefner died last Wednesday at age 91 of two main causes — cardiac arrest (a sudden stopping of the heart) and a bacterial infection.
The infection was triggered by E. coli, a common bacteria that is often survivable in adults but can cause complications in older people and young children, according to a Los Angeles Health Department death certificate obtained on Tuesday by TMZ and reported by the Los Angeles Times. Hefner’s infection — which lasted six days — failed to respond to antibiotics; the certificate listed it as “highly resistant” to the drugs.
This is part of a growing problem. After years of antibiotic abuse in people and animals — with doctors practically doling them out like candy and farmers stirring them into animal feed — antibiotics have virtually stopped working. In January, a woman died after a raging infection she had failed to respond to 26 different kinds of antibiotics. The bacteria have outsmarted us, and they’re stronger than ever.
Most people are exposed to E. coli in contaminated food or water. Raw vegetables and undercooked ground beef are two of the most common sources. Typically, the infection only lasts about a week, but in older people and young children, the infection can go on to cause a life-threatening form of kidney failure.
It’s unclear whether or not Hefner suffered from any kidney issues. None are listed on his death certificate. Another cause of death that is listed, however, is septicemia — a severe and sometimes deadly complication that results from a severe infection. As part of the body’s attempt to fight an infection, it unleashes inflammation. But this reaction can go into overdrive, triggering swelling throughout the body and sometimes causing multiple organs to fail.
APHefner was born on April 9, 1926 and founded Playboy magazine in 1953.
“I’m never going to grow up,” Hefner said in a CNN interview when he was 82. “Staying young is what it is all about for me. Holding on to the boy and long ago I decided that age really didn’t matter and as long as the ladies … feel the same way, that’s fine with me.”

“Yes, they supported us with aviation, but the main credit goes to the Iraqi soldiers, people’s militia, Iraqi air force,” al-Maliki stated in his interview with the Russian news agency.
He added that he “regrets and denies [Americans] claiming the victory [in Mosul] is their achievement.”
“In reality, this is the victory of the Iraqi army,” al-Maliki said, revealing that the victory came a high cost, with some 20,000 Iraqi soldiers and police officers having been either killed or wounded.
The Iraqi military did everything possible “not to destroy the city more than it was necessary in the circumstances of war,” he said, adding, that as a result, the battle for Mosul lasted for nine months.
“We could have surrounded the city, but then its residents would have suffered from famine.”
There were some 5,000 terrorists in Iraq, with between 2,000 and 3,000 of them having been killed. Others are still hiding or have fled with the refugees, according to the Iraqi vice-president.
“The victory is yet not final,” the top Iraqi official said, explaining that there are “still small terrorist hubs in the city,” as well as terrorist “sleeper cells” across the country.

“There are sleeper cells in Baghdad, from time to time they take action and perform bombings… That’s not worrying in a military sense. Islamic State [IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL] is unable to advance or capture territories, they will not be able to hold the occupied regions, but from the security point of view there are still sleeper cells and lone wolves, used by IS,” al-Maliki said.
While the US has provided support to the Iraqi army and allied forces, it has contributed to the emergence of IS in the first place, al-Maliki claimed, adding that Washington now seeks to establish military bases on Iraqi territory in order to maintain influence in the region.
“IS resembles the Taliban which was created by the US administration to counter the USSR in Afghanistan. The same way, IS was created to counter the Iraqi stance, which did not agree to blockade Syria, was against no-fly zones in Syria and against American military bases,” he stated.
“The Iraqi society is against foreign military bases on the country’s territory,” al-Maliki told RIA, adding that he has already warned the Americans against “coming back to Iraq and setting up bases here.”

Countries don’t only welcome immigrants because they are good inventors; the best argument for allowing people to migrate from places of conflict or economic malaise might be basic human decency—which is one reason there is so much uproar over President Trump’s executive order limiting immigration from seven majority-Muslim countries. But immigrants are also essential to America’s innovative spirit: Tech companies including Apple, Google, and Facebook filed an amicus brief protesting that the ban “threatens companies’ ability to attract talent, business, and investment to the United States.”
Immigrants have historically helped boost the ingenuity of some American regions and industries, according to a new paper by the University of Chicago economists Ufuk Akcigit and John Grisgsby, and Harvard Business School’s Tom Nichols. The authors looked at sectors with higher shares of foreign-born inventors between 1940 and 2000, and found that those areas produced more patents and inventions than those with a higher share of native-born inventors. (This is similar to findings in a 2014 paper that found that fields welcoming a large number of Jewish emigres from Nazi Germany saw patents rise 31 percent.) Why count patents? Patents are associated with economic growth: In a separate paper, the authors find that the states with higher shares of patents filed experienced more economic growth than those that were less inventive.
Akcigit and colleagues also looked at geographic areas with high numbers of immigrants and found those produced more inventions and patents. In the most inventive states—New York, New Jersey, Illinois, and Massachusetts—20.6 percent of the population were international migrants. In the least inventive states, just 1.7 percent were international migrants. (The authors controlled for population density by examining the number of patents filed and number of immigrants per capita.)
These findings are similar to a widely-cited paper from 2009 by Jennifer Hunt of McGill University and Marjolaine Gauthier-Loiselle of Princeton, which found that immigrants file patents at double the native rate, primarily because more immigrants hold degrees in science and engineering. A one-percentage-point rise in the share of immigrant college graduates, they found, increases patents per capita by 6 percent.
There are a few reasons why immigrants have produced these innovation bumps, Nichols, of Harvard, told me. Immigrants might have come to the U.S. specifically to work in growing fields, and so had ideas and expertise they had cultivated before they arrived. When they arrived, they were able to quickly turn those ideas into patents in a way that would have been more difficult in other countries with weaker intellectual-property protections. For example, the amount it cost to hold a patent to a term of 17 years in 1900 cost just 11 percent of what it cost in the United Kingdom in the same year. What’s more, as Hunt points out, many immigrants have expertise and interest in fields like science and engineering where there are fewer native-born specialists,, and which are more conducive to patents and invention.
In addition, because they had some discretion in choosing their destination city, some immigrant inventors might have sought out geographic areas where there were other people working in similar fields. This would create what economists refer to as spillover, which is when the presence of a bunch of experts in one geographic area leads to the generation of more ideas because people share notes and collaborate. For example, a number of immigrants, including a Canadian, a Belgian and a Russian, worked together at the Radio Corporation of America to create the first electron microscope.
All this innovation is about more than just advancing science—technological change drives economic growth, and so immigrants have been key to helping produce growth in the U.S. economy, which can raise living standards and produce widespread prosperity.
A reduction in the number of immigrants coming into the U.S., then, could affect U.S. growth. “Any lack of innovative capacity will lead to economic growth drying up,” Nichols said. “If a major source of innovation is immigrants, and that source stops, you would be worried about economic growth more generally.”
Many leaders, most notably President Trump, have worried about the American economy’s slowing growth numbers. Economists are trying to come up with an explanation for why the U.S.’s gross domestic product isn’t growing at a rate of 3 percent, as it did in the past. Allowing in more immigrants is probably not the answer; the U.S. is now accepting more high-skilled immigrants than it did in the past. But that could change, too, and not just because of the recent ban: Trump has spoken about revamping the H-1B visa program, which allocates visas to skilled foreigners, in a way that could allow in fewer immigrants. The administration doesn’t seem to be aware that any further reductions in immigration could have very real impacts on American innovation. And that could mean less, rather than more, growth, in the U.S. economy.
