The FDA has now granted marketing approval to an app that tracks a user’s temperature and menstrual cycle in order to determine which days they are fertile and which days they aren’t. The contraceptive app, called Natural Cycles, was approved in Europe last year. “Consumers are increasingly using digital health technologies to inform their everyday health decisions, and this new app can provide an effective method of contraception if it’s used carefully and correctly,” said Terri Cornelison, assistant director for the health of women at the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health. “But women should know that no form of contraception works perfectly, so an unplanned pregnancy could still result from correct usage of this device.”

Though it has been approved elsewhere and boasts more than 625,000 users, Natural Cycles hasn’t gone without controversy. Earlier this year, a Swedish hospital reported the app to the Swedish Medical Products Agency after it found that of 668 women who sought abortions over a time period of four months, 37 were using Natural Cycles as their method of contraception. “No contraception is 100 percent and unwanted pregnancies is an unfortunate risk with any contraception,” the company said at the time. It added that the unwanted pregnancies of those 37 individuals fell within its typical use efficacy rate. In July, the UK’s Advertising Standards Authority launched an investigation into the company over claims made in a Facebook ad it ran last year.

Last year, Natural Cycles released a study it helped conduct that found its method to be 99 percent accurate when used perfectly, meaning the user didn’t participate in unprotected sexual intercourse on days when the app said they were fertile. When used “typically,” it was 93 percent effective, according to the study. Natural Cycles’ website says that typical use contraceptive failure could be due to any number of reasons including the app mistakenly saying a fertile day was a non-fertile day or a user having unprotected sex on a fertile day.

The FDA approved Natural Cycles through its premarket review regulatory pathway, which looks at low- to moderate-risk health tech devices. The app costs $ 10 per month or $ 80 per year.

A Malaysian contraceptive company is attempting to add a little spice to their customer’s sex life by introducing a condom that tastes like one of the country’s favorite chilli-infused rice dishes.

The self-proclaimed world’s biggest condom manufacturer, Karex, offer a wide-range of flavoured condoms and recently added a ‘nasi lemak’, which translates to ‘fatty rice’, contraceptive to their vast collection.

The dish usually consists of rice cooked with coconut milk, and served with anchovies, roasted peanuts, a boiled egg, sliced cucumber and a dollop of fiery chili sauce, reports AFP.

“We Malaysians are divided across our political ideas, religion and race,” said Karex chief executive Goh Miah Kiat.

“I felt one thing that unites us all (is): ‘Where’s the best nasi lemak place you’ve been?'”

Kiat says the controversial flavours are more than just a marketing gimmick, and are actually intended to improve contraceptive use in the Muslim-majority country.

“For me, it’s about public health, and I want to get the message across to people,” Goh said.

The limited edition condom flavor is expected to hit stores in November or December – just in time for the holidays!

The morning after pill has been the subject of much debate in recent months. 

In June, Superdrug began offering a generic emergency contraceptive pill for £13.49 – around half the price of many branded options – after calls from campaign groups for retailers to make it affordable.

More recently, Boots came under fire for telling the British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS) it didn’t want to cut the cost of its morning after pills for fear of ”incentivising inappropriate use”.

However, now an online pharmacy is offering an advanced supply for just £4.99 per pack.

Chemist-4-U have announced they are to reduce prices of their morning after pill, which will bring them in line with retail prices in France.

Women will be able to keep an emergency supply – of up to three packs within a six month period – in their cupboard until needed, after completing an online medical questionnaire.

Shamir Patel, director and pharmacist of the online pharmacy, said he “firmly believes” that emergency contraception should be available with as low a mark-up as possible. 

He said: “We believe healthcare should be affordable, and the morning after pill is not an expensive product to produce. It is our belief that a reasonable price point for online is £4.99 with £1.99 postage.

“However our belief is, an advanced supply from us avoids the panic in the unlikely event of barrier method failure. We advise all patients that EHC should not be used as a regular contraceptive method.”

To avoid the system being abused, Chemist-4-U.com have ensured checks are in place to stop the same person purchasing more than three packs in a six month period.

A spokesperson for BPAS said: “We see women at our clinics who are facing an unplanned pregnancy because they were unable to afford emergency contraception when they needed it. 

“We have also heard from women who have gone through immense difficulty, skipped meals or had to borrow money from family members, in order to pay the historically high price-tag for emergency contraception. 

“Pharmacies are doing the right thing for women and their wellbeing by reducing the price, and we absolutely commend their commitment.”

Boots has also recently announced it is reducing the cost of its generic, less expensive emergency contraceptive from £26 to £15.99.

The morning after pill is also available for free from a GP surgery that provides contraception, a contraception clinic, a sexual health clinic, some genitourinary medicine clinics, some young people’s clinics, most pharmacies, some NHS walk-in centres and some accident and emergency departments.

There are two kinds – Levonelle which has to be taken within 72 hours of sex, and ellaOne which has to be taken within 120 hours of sex – and both work by preventing or delaying ovulation, according to the NHS.

A male contraceptive gel experiment in monkeys shows potential as an alternative to the surgery. 

The gel has provided long-term and reliable contraception in male rhesus monkeys, according to research published in the open access journal Basic and Clinical Andrology.

The product, called Vasalgel, which was trialled on rabbits in 2016, could prevent men from going under the knife.

The gel is injected into the vas deferens – the duct which conveys sperm from the testicle to the urethra. 

The gel fills the internal cavity forming a mechanical barrier to the movement of sperm. 

This method of contraception could one day be a viable alternative to a vasectomy and, in this study, was able to prevent any conceptions occurring in a test group of 16 rhesus monkeys.

“Our research shows that Vasalgel placement into the vas deferens produces reliable contraception in mature male rhesus monkeys as shown by the lack of pregnancies in reproductively viable females with which the males were housed. 

“Importantly, we show that the method of Vasalgel placement is safe and produced fewer complications than usually occur with a vasectomy,” Dr Catherine VandeVoort, lead author from the California National Primate Research Centre, said.

Dr VandeVoort added: “Vasalgel shows real promise as an alternative to vasectomy because research in rabbits has previously shown the product to be reversible. Although it is possible to reverse a vasectomy, it is a technically challenging procedure and patients often have very low rates of fertility following reversal.”

The researchers say that future research should investigate the reversibility of Vasalgel placement in rhesus monkeys so that it can move forward as a potential alternative option to vasectomy for human males.

Having a vasectomy can increase the chances of men getting prostate cancer, it recently emerged.

The routine procedure has also been linked to a stronger risk of the disease becoming more advanced or fatal, researchers at Harvard School of Public Health in the US found.

Their results found a 10 per cent increased risk of prostate cancer overall in men who had the snip, which is undergone by thousands of men in the UK every year and is free on the NHS.

You still need to use a condom after getting a vasectomy, however.

Sex can be resumed as soon as it feels comfortable to do so after the procedure, but another form of contraception must be used until the live sperm that remain in the tubes are gone. This can take a few months. 

Two semen tests will need to be performed to ensure that the tubes are clear of sperm.
