GOVERNORS of the Bank of Japan (BoJ) tend not to linger long in their post. Twenty-two people have headed the institution since 1914, compared with 16 at the Federal Reserve and 12 at the Bank of England. The last time a BoJ governor won a second term was 1961, when Japan’s economy was growing by over 11% and inflation was over 5%. As Richard Werner, the author of “Princes of the Yen”, a history of the central bank’s failures, points out, by tradition the job alternates every five years between a candidate backed by the finance ministry and a “true-born” BoJ insider.

This tradition will be broken by the reappointment of Haruhiko Kuroda, who was nominated for a second term on February 16th. If he completes it, he will become the longest-serving governor in the BoJ’s history.

With luck that might be long enough for him to reach the central bank’s elusive inflation target of 2%, a goal set five years ago which he had hoped to meet by 2015. Although the BoJ has bought…

Asked by Forbes magazine whether he feels a responsibility to honor agreements from previous administrations such as the nuclear deal with Iran, the Paris climate pact, or free-trade deals, Trump answered with a quick “No.”

“It’s a dangerous precedent: an America where each administration, rather than building on the agreements of its predecessors, undoes each other’s deals ‒ effectively undermining the authority of any American head of state. Again, Trump shrugs,” Forbes wrote.

Trump has repeatedly promised to terminate NAFTA, the free trade agreement between the US, Mexico and Canada.

“I happen to think that NAFTA will have to be terminated if we’re going to make it good. Otherwise, I believe you can’t negotiate a good deal,” he said in the interview.

Trump said he considers his scrapping of the Trans-Pacific Partnership international trade deal “a great accomplishment.”

“I like bilateral deals,” he said. “You can have it this way and do much more business. And if it doesn’t work out with a country, you give them a 30-day notice, and you either renegotiate or not.”

Trump revealed that he is working on a ‘carrot and stick’ legislation for US companies to get them to keep jobs in the United States. Those that do will get rewarded, while those that send operations offshore will “get penalized severely,” he explained in the interview.

“It’s both a carrot and a stick,” the president said. “It is an incentive to stay. But it is perhaps even more so ‒ if you leave, it’s going to be very tough for you to think that you’re going to be able to sell your product back into our country.”

The initiative is in keeping with Trump’s campaign promise to make it less lucrative for American companies to take operations overseas as they seek to cut costs on labor, and then sell their products to US consumers.

The president has yet to get Congress to approve some of his other key campaign pledges ‒ like repealing the Obama-era Affordable Care Act and passing tax cuts. A number of Republicans, including Senator John McCain (R-Arizona), have blocked attempts to repeal the so-called Obamacare.

“Since Congress can’t get its act together on HealthCare, I will be using the power of the pen to give great HealthCare to many people ‒ FAST” Trump tweeted Tuesday, referring to his plan to sign an executive order to allow health insurance to be purchased across state lines, which would presumably drive down costs.

Trump has been accused of alienating members of his own party, as he repeatedly blasted them on twitter and elsewhere. That is part of Trump’s tactic, Forbes concluded quoting the president’s Art of the Deal: “I’m the first to admit that I am very competitive and that I’ll do nearly anything within legal bounds to win. Sometimes, part of making a deal is denigrating your competition.”

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from the Doctor Foster season two finale.

In a big twist Tom Foster (played by Tom Taylor) ended up running away from his feuding parents Gemma (Suranne Jones) and Simon (Bertie Carvel).

He ended up leaving his parents behind as he forged out a new life for himself, becoming a missing person with his mother and father desperately trying to find him.

The very last shot saw Gemma breaking the fourth wall and addressing the camera directly as she called for Tom to come back to her. 

The ending left viewers divided with many slamming the BBC series over the trajectory of the story. 

One person wrote: “What a dreadful series finale. Appalling script and totally barmy story. A waste. #DoctorFoster.”

While a second posted on Twitter: “Well that was ridiculous #DoctorFoster.”

A third wrote: “Tonight’s  #DoctorFoster was the equivalent of handing in coursework that was written moments ago on the school bus #disappointing.”

“#DoctorFoster worst ending in the history of endings. More disappointed than when Mary Berry left bake off. Ok. Maybe not THAT disappointed,” a fourth audience member added.

However, there was also praise from many other fans who wanted a third season of Doctor Foster. 

“Still BUZZIN for season 3 #DoctorFoster,” enthused one viewer.

As a second tweeted: “Really hoping for a #DoctorFoster series 3. Anyone with me???”

“My heart the whole of that episode. Never felt emotion like it. Unbelievable. Roll on season 3. #DoctorFoster,” commented a third. 

Along with the mixed reception, Doctor Foster seemed to suffer a number of continuity errors including one in which a fridge door seemed to miraculously close itself. 

In one shot she was seen having a drink and the door was wide open, while in the next shot it had shut itself. 

Another scene saw Simon opening a bottle of champagne as the cork went flying across the garden.

However, Simon seemed to have the cork in his hand moments later despite never seemingly have moved from his spot sitting next to Gemma on the decking. 

It is not known whether there will be a third series of Doctor Foster but creator Mike Bartlett has spoken about a potential return.

The BBC series’ second episode saw DI Helen Weeks (played by MyAnna Buring) continue to struggle with her childhood trauma after returning to her hometown in Derbyshire with her partner and fellow detective Paul Hopkins (Ben Batt).

But many viewers were only interested in pointing out that the adaptation of Mark Billingham’s novel featured an unfortunate faux-pas, when it became obvious that the crew member responsible for making sure the facts added up had missed that Helen can be seen driving two very different cars.

After clocking the mistake, many fans took to Twitter to share their glee.

“#bbc #InTheDark @BBC BBC Guys,Helens golf has changed reg twice in this esp..started on a 60 plate & on the way to the farm was on a 59..?” one confused person tweeted to the masses. 

Another viewer shared their enjoyment for the show but admitted they couldn’t look away from the error, saying: “#inthedark @BBC love the programme but she drives two totally different cars #golf #Volkswagen #yearsapart #steeringwheel #numberplate.”

“@BBC watching in the dark – wondering why helen weeks’ car has a different reg plate in ten mins,” another person noticed. 

The episode also showcased MyAnna’s acting chops once more, as the 37-year-old actress gave a chilling portrayal of a woman fighting with her memories of childhood abuse, and the moment she explained the truth about her pregnancy to her devastated boyfriend Paul. 

While fans are still none the wiser about the true killer, last week’s offering of the show saw many people offering up their theories. 

One person cautiously posted: “#InTheDark reserving judgment they say you get the killer within first ten minutes.”

“Calling it: The true killer is sex god Gavin. #InTheDark,” said a second.

In The Dark continues next Tuesday at 9pm on BBC One.

The blunder was first noticed during a scene at Emma Barton’s (played by Gillian Kearney) house when her sons joined her in the living room. 

On the clock behind the murderer, it read 5.50, yet seconds earlier Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller) had said he didn’t want to drink alcohol because it was only 9.30 in the morning. 

It seems that the crew failed to remember to turn the clock to its correct time. 

Fans immediately took to social media when they spotted the gaffe.

One posted: “Emma’s probably worrying why her clock says 5.52 when Aaron said to Adam it was 9.30 in the morning!! Continuity.” 

While another one said: “#Emmerdale need to get their clock times straight. Adam says it’s 9:30 am and next minute Emma’s clock says 5:50 pm. Continuity errors!”

One viewer suggested that the error could have been on purpose however, saying: “@emmerdale Bad continuity or has the Bartons’ clock stopped?? Aaron says it’s 9.30 am, next shot, Bartons’ clock reads 10 to 6.”

Another eagle-eyed audience member also noticed that there was another time added into the mix – 2.50 – later on in the episode. 

One person pointed out that timing wasn’t the only issue on the ITV show, as bosses made a huge error in regards to Rebecca’s (Emily Head) pregnancy storyline. 

“@emmerdale how wrong is tonight’s episode, go for 12 week scan come out with sex of baby and 3D scan…. it’s not that hard to get right,” they tweeted angrily.

Emmerdale continues tomorrow at 7pm on ITV.
