Cary Joji Fukunaga will soon be bringing his considerable talents to Bond 25, having replaced previous director Danny Boyle. While Bond 25 is still very much in development, rumors regarding the plot have already sprung up. Rumors that Fukunaga has no problem shooting down. But while the specifics of Bond 25 are still a secret, Fukunaga has confirmed that the film will still be following the arc that started with Casino Royale.

If you thought that Bond 25 might attempt to start things fresh, think again. According to director Cary Joji Fukunaga, the latest adventure of 007 will be very much in-line with the story that began in Casino Royale. During an interview with Inquirer.net, the Bond helmer offered some vague insight into how the story is being approached:

“In terms of what I can bring to change the character, Bond is on a character arc that started with ‘Casino Royale,’ and I will be carrying that on. There will be changes, I am sure. As in any story, a character has to change in order [to have] a narrative.”

What arc is Fukunaga talking about here, though? Bond’s continued learning curve? Or his regret over the death of Vesper? Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace both complemented each other – they felt like they were telling similar stories. But Skyfall changed things up. Bond no longer seemed new to the job – he was older, more haggard, more tired. And then came Spectre, which…well, I don’t even know what that movie was doing, because it wasn’t very good. I suppose the big takeaway here is that Fukunaga is confirming he’s not going to change things drastically. In other words, don’t expect Bond 25 to feel like a reboot.

Also: don’t believe everything you read online. There have been rumors that neither master villain Blofeld (played by Christoph Waltz in Spectre) and gadget nerd Q (Ben Whishaw) would return for the next installment. But according to Fukunaga, no one can know that for sure:

“Who is saying those rumors? We haven’t finished the screenplay, so there is no way that anyone could know that. Those are two extraordinary actors, so if there is space for them in the story, I would absolutely want them there. But I don’t know yet what it’s going to be.”

Waltz has said in the past that he’s not coming back, but that was before Fukunaga came on board. Things change, so don’t count him out yet.

Bond 25 opens on February 14, 2020.

  • North Korean state media has accused the US of plotting to “unleash a war” on North Korea while continuing to negotiate “with a smile on its face.”
  • Sunday’s Rodong Sinmun newspaper, the official mouthpiece of the ruling Worker’s Party of Korea, called out what it claims were US military movements in the region as practice for a potential invasion of Pyongyang.
  • The strongly-worded piece comes just days after President Trump canceled a planned trip to North Korea by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
  • On Monday, South Korea said that Pompeo’s abrupt cancelation is having an “effect” on the inter-Korean liaison office that was slated to open this month.

Theme Park Bits: Halloween Horror Nights Lights-On Tour, Sea World’s Continuing Woes, Disney vs. Anaheim https://briefnews.eu/theme-park-bits-halloween-horror-nights-lights-on-tour-sea-worlds-continuing-woes-disney-vs-anaheim/ https://briefnews.eu/theme-park-bits-halloween-horror-nights-lights-on-tour-sea-worlds-continuing-woes-disney-vs-anaheim/#respond Sat, 07 Oct 2017 18:39:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/theme-park-bits-halloween-horror-nights-lights-on-tour-sea-worlds-continuing-woes-disney-vs-anaheim/ FigmentPop

In this edition of Theme Park Bits:

  • Epcot’s 35th-anniversary Funko Pop! Figment figure is now available online.
  • See what Universal Orlando’s haunted houses look like with the lights on.
  • Hear new details on the ongoing federal investigation into Sea World.
  • Disney has reportedly been influencing local elections in Anaheim.
  • Would you like to work for a theme park, or maybe help design one?
  • And more!

Following up on last week’s Epcot anniversary news, Disney Parks Blog posted a brief write-up about what went down October 1 in the celebration at the park. The next day, Josh Spiegel had an interesting feature delving deeper into the park’s history, while also giving voice to some of the fan frustration Epcot elicits. Meanwhile, collectors can now rejoice, as the Funko Pop! Figment figure mentioned here last week is available online.

In other Walt Disney World news, the Swan and Dolphin Resort has put the finishing touches on a multi-million-dollar redesign of its facilities. This project has been going for the last three years; The Laughing Place has a full breakdown of what the redesign entails.

According to Mousesavers, outside certain blackout periods, WDW Annual Passholders can usually obtain a substantial discount at the Swan and Dolphin using the rate code AP. The Disney Blog also reports that Annual Passholders are now enjoying a nearly three-month extension on their 20% dining discount, which was originally set to expire at the end of the Magic Kingdom’s 45th anniversary year on October 1.

It’s not often you get to see the haunted houses of Halloween Horror Nights by day. In the 15-minute video above (which is interspersed with pictures and audio commentary), The Tim Tracker takes you behind-the-scenes with him on Universal Orlando’s Unmasking the Horror tour, for a lights-on look at the Horrors of Blumhouse, Hive, The Fallen, and Dead Waters. There are also glimpses of select areas in and around The Shining, American Horror Story, and Scarecrow haunted houses.

Rumors continue to fly that Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! may soon be coming to Walt Disney Studios Paris. The good news is, it could start a new Marvel Land in the park. The bad news is, Towers of Terror around the world may continue to fall (or at least be converted into a different ride building).

The Disney Store has overhauled its website, and its stores are following suit. The location in L.A.’s Westfield Century City shopping mall recently premiered a new look that will soon begin spreading to other stores nationwide. The cool thing is, this location features a screen for live-streaming parades from inside Disneyland Park. Merchandise that was previously only available at Disney parks is also making its way to store shelves.

People who hold fond memories of petting dolphins or being in the splash zone at Sea World’s orca shows will want to steel themselves for this next bit of news. Back in August, Inside the Magic reported that Sea World was under federal criminal investigation for allegedly misleading investors. The company went public in 2013, months after the documentary Blackfish premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. That documentary did a lot to sway public opinion about the captivity of killer whales, so much so that it has had a noticeably adverse effect on park attendance.

This week it made headlines in Orlando Weekly that the former president of Sea World Orlando is now working with federal investigators. Regardless of the outcome of all this, Sea World has already been forced to adjust its business practices. For years, Shamu was the face of the park chain, but now the orca breeding program has ended, and theatrical shows with the existing orca population are being phased out, in favor of less stunt-driven, more educational shows, like the new Orca Encounter at Sea World San Diego. This has not stopped protests, however; over the summer, actor James Cromwell (L.A. Confidential) and other PETA protesters were arrested for disrupting one such show.

The US dollar is falling out of favor with traders even with the Fed continuing to hike rates https://briefnews.eu/the-us-dollar-is-falling-out-of-favor-with-traders-even-with-the-fed-continuing-to-hike-rates/ https://briefnews.eu/the-us-dollar-is-falling-out-of-favor-with-traders-even-with-the-fed-continuing-to-hike-rates/#respond Mon, 26 Jun 2017 07:19:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-us-dollar-is-falling-out-of-favor-with-traders-even-with-the-fed-continuing-to-hike-rates/ Janet YellenREUTERS/Joshua Roberts

The US dollar is falling out of favour with currency traders, even with the US Federal Reserve continuing to lift interest rates.

According to data released by the US Commodity Futures Trading Commission on Friday, net long speculative positioning in the greenback fell for a fifth consecutive week in late June, leaving it sitting at the lowest levels since September last year.

“Dollar selling was mostly broad-based except against the EUR,” said Khoon Goh and Rini Sen, strategists at ANZ Bank.

Goh and Sen said net long USD positions were reduced by $ US2.5 billion to $ US6.7 billion, while net long positioning in the ICE US Dollar Index fell by $ US2.2 billion to $ US5.5 billion, leaving it sitting at a three-year low.

The US dollar index has lost 6.3% from the multi-year high of 103.82 struck on January 3, undermined by doubts over the ability of the Trump administration to deliver wide-ranging tax reforms.

As seen in the chart below, those doubts, leading to sharply lower US treasury yields, has seen long US dollar positioning among speculators fall sharply.

The continued decline in long positioning has come despite a 1% bounce in the US dollar index in the past couple of weeks, and suggests that traders don’t think the move will become part of a longer-lasting trend, at least not yet.

According to Goh and Sen, the continued reduction in long US dollar positioning was driven by renewed buying in the British pound and commodity currencies such as the Australian and New Zealand dollars.

“GBP saw net buying after three straight weeks of selling,” the pair wrote, adding that leveraged funds reduced their net short GBP positions by $ US500 million to $ US800 million.

“The surprise 5-3 decision to leave rates unchanged by the Bank of England (BoE) at their 15 June meeting, raising the possibility that the BoE could be the next major central bank to follow the Fed in hiking rates, likely spurred the GBP buying.”

And despite continued weakness in commodity prices, traders also stepped up their buying in the Australian and New Zealand dollars.

“Commodity currencies experienced net buying for the fourth consecutive week,” said Goh and Sen.

“Leveraged funds have turned net long AUD again following net buying of $ US1.5 billion, while overall net long NZD positions rose to their highest level since February ahead of the 22 June Reserve Bank of New Zealand meeting.”

Of the other major currencies, net short positioning in the Japanese yen was reduced by $ US1.1 billion to $ US1.3 billion, while net positioning in the euro — after turning long for the first time in several years in the prior week — went short once again with net selling of $ 3.3 billion reported.

This chart from ANZ shows net speculative positioning in the US dollar against other major currencies.

Net positioning is simply the sum of long and short options and futures positions in a particular currency reported by the CFTC in its weekly Commitment of Traders (COT) report, released each Friday. When net positioning is short it suggests the market, collectively, is looking for price weakness. Long positioning indicates that the opposite outcome is expected.

In order to determine speculative positioning, ANZ uses non-commercial positions reported by the CFTC as they “seek to profit from movements in the asset price as opposed to hedging business activities”.

The Thunderbird e-mail client still has its supporters, but for the past couple of years, Mozilla has been making moves to distance itself from the project. In late 2015, Mozilla announced that it would be looking for a new home for Thunderbird, calling its continued maintenance “a tax” on Firefox development.

Yesterday, Mozilla Senior Add-ons Technical Editor Philipp Kewisch announced Mozilla’s future plans for Thunderbird—the Mozilla Foundation will “continue as Thunderbird’s legal, fiscal, and cultural home,” but on the condition that the Thunderbird Council maintains a good working relationship with Mozilla leadership and that Thunderbird works to reduce its “operational and technical” reliance on Mozilla.

As a first step toward operational independence, the Thunderbird Council has been soliciting donations from users, which Kewisch says has become “a strong revenue stream” that is helping to pay for servers and staff.

Chris Evans SPEAKS OUT on continuing as Captain America after Infinity War and Avengers 4 https://briefnews.eu/chris-evans-speaks-out-on-continuing-as-captain-america-after-infinity-war-and-avengers-4/ https://briefnews.eu/chris-evans-speaks-out-on-continuing-as-captain-america-after-infinity-war-and-avengers-4/#respond Fri, 24 Mar 2017 10:12:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/chris-evans-speaks-out-on-continuing-as-captain-america-after-infinity-war-and-avengers-4/

The 35-year-old actor has starred in three Captain America and two Avengers movies since his debut in 2011.

Now the star is filming Avengers: Infinity War back-to-back with Avengers 4, but will he continue on as the superhero into Phase 4 of the Cinematic Universe?

Last week it was rumoured that

However, he has now spoken out on the matter, claiming he is still open to continuing as Captain America.

Speaking with Collider, he said: “It’s really not up to me. My contract is up. I’m not going to sit here and say, ‘No more.’

“I think Hugh Jackman has made 47 Wolverine movies, and they somehow keep getting better.

“It’s a character I love, and it’s a factory that really knows what they’re doing.”

He continued: “The system is sound, over there. They make great movies.

“If they weren’t kicking out quality, I’d have a different opinion.

“But, everything Marvel does seems to be cinema gold. And like I said, I love the character.

“The only reason it would end is ‘cause my contract is up. After Avengers 4, my contract is done.”

He added: “Talk to Marvel. If we engage further, I’d be open to it. I love the character.

“It’s almost like high school. You certainly always look to senior year, and then, all of a sudden, senior year happens and you’re like, ‘I don’t know if I’m ready to go.’ It’s tough thinking about not playing the guy.”

Avengers: Infinity War will be released in UK cinemas on April 27, 2018, while Avengers 4 will follow on April 26, 2019.

A Bigger Mac? McLaren Adopting Scalable Architecture, Continuing EV Development https://briefnews.eu/a-bigger-mac-mclaren-adopting-scalable-architecture-continuing-ev-development-2/ https://briefnews.eu/a-bigger-mac-mclaren-adopting-scalable-architecture-continuing-ev-development-2/#respond Sat, 18 Mar 2017 07:43:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/a-bigger-mac-mclaren-adopting-scalable-architecture-continuing-ev-development-2/ 2018 McLaren 720S

–

The announcement by McLaren that it plans to open a new factory in England to build carbon-fiber tubs for its future models was pretty much ignored in the excitement of the 720S debut. But that doesn’t mean the news isn’t important; after all, the new factory indicates that change is coming to the way McLaren’s cars are made.

–

Get Tubby

–

McLaren’s tubs have been made in Austria by contractor Carbo Tech, but the company has decided that its next-generation models will switch to a more flexible architecture, with the tubs set to be made in the aforementioned new facility in Sheffield, England, which will employ 200 people. Every modern McLaren road car has been built around basically the same structure, but the new platform will offer vastly more flexibility.

–

When we spoke to company CEO Mike Flewitt at the Geneva auto show, he confirmed that the new tub will be much easier to adapt and even to resize.

–

“It’s going to evolve,” he told us, adding that it is “lighter and stronger, and there’s more opportunity for different forms and different packaging.”

–

The ability to move hard points, which are fixed on McLaren’s current platform, surely will help McLaren package different powertrain configurations. Chief among those powertrain options is McLaren’s forthcoming hybrid powertrain, which will need space for batteries and an electric motor that will assist a V-6 engine.

–

But beyond that, things get very interesting, with Flewitt admitting there’s the possibility to do different-size McLarens and maybe even extra seats. While the company is already working on a three-seater, the McLaren F1–inspired BP23, we could see models with either fewer or more chairs.

–

“We’ve had people internally speculating about a single-seater as a track car,” he told Australian publication Wheels. He told us: “Would we go to a two-plus-two or a four-seater? I think I wouldn’t rule it out, although it isn’t on the plan today. But as the brand grows, maybe. If you look at the 570GT that we launched last year, it’s a superb GT car. In that segment, maybe there’s scope to grow and offer more occupant space.”

–

EV Development Continues

–

Work is continuing on McLaren’s EV prototype, with the plan to build a single test mule to gauge reaction to the idea of a combustion-free Macca.

–

“It’s not a prototype for a production car at this stage; it’s literally a mule to develop attributes,” Flewitt told us. “We’re trying to understand the emotional characteristics of a car like that. We could copy Tesla and build a very fast electric car. Some of the acceleration figures for [the Model S] aren’t far from a 720S. The key is making a car that’s as exciting as a 720S. That’s where the challenge lies.”

–

Flewitt confirmed it is possible that McLaren will produce this EV mule and then decide it’s not the right step for the brand, although he hopes that won’t be the case.

–

“I’m an optimist,” he said, adding: “I’m sure we’ll be building EVs one day, I’m just not sure we’ll be building only EVs. Enthusiasts will always have a desire for the internal-combustion engine, but how the mix ends up is really hard to call.”

–

No Dumbing Down

–

McLaren definitely won’t produce higher-emitting or less clean models, even if CAFE standards are relaxed in the United States. “A one-world set of standards would make our lives so much easier,” Flewitt said. “The U.S. and Europe have long been different on emissions, on crash, on a whole number of things—and that makes life much more complicated for us.

–

–

–

–

“We build a very small volume so we build, as near as possible, one car. To have an increasing number of standards around the world adds complexity and cost.”

–

While stressing that he didn’t want to give a “political answer” to the potential of relaxed U.S. fuel-economy standards, Flewitt said they won’t change his company’s direction. “We’re not going to start dumbing down the technology or moving backward on emissions or efficiency just because one market does. Absolutely not.”
