His curling comeback couldn't have gone much better.

In his first two games back with Team Brad Jacobs after taking an indefinite leave to work on personal growth, Ryan Fry was nearly perfect.

Fry last played as a substitute at a World Curling Tour event in Red Deer, Alta., last November. He was ejected with teammates Jamie Koe, Chris Schille and DJ Kidby for what organizers called unsportsmanlike behaviour resulting from excessive drinking.

On Wednesday, Fry returned to the ice with his teammates to play their first game at the Grand Slam of Curling Meridian Canadian Open against Team Peter De Cruz.

Jacobs battled back with three points in the seventh end, but would eventually lose a hard-fought battle on the last rock, 6-5.

Fry finished the game curling 97 per cent, which was the best in the game.

"It was great to be back out there with the guys," Fry said. "I have spent the last seven years competing with them, over that time they have become three of my best friends."

In the team's second game of the day against Team Kleiter from Saskatchewan, Jacobs and company found their rhythm, cruising to a 7-3 victory.

Fry once again out-curled everyone on the ice, shooting 96 per cent.

"My personal performance doesn't mean as much to me as what I bring to the team," he said. "I think this experience allowed me to take a step back and understand my roll."

The team is back on the ice Thursday night in North Battleford.

Moving forward

The last two months certainly haven't been easy for Fry and his teammates, as they've juggled their line-up, all while trying to find the best way to come together as a team again.

Jacobs, E.J. Harnden and Ryan Harnden found replacements in Marc Kennedy and Matt Wozniak for the two events Fry missed during his leave.

It seemed to work magically at the Canada Cup with Kennedy throwing third stones — the team won the championship.

And it looked as though they might keep the good times rolling in Newfoundland and Labrador at the next Slam with Wozniak filling in, going undefeated in the round robin. They would lose out in the quarterfinals, however.

Now they're back together, the team who won Olympic gold in 2014.

Fry has taken these last number of weeks to reflect on all that's transpired. In fact, in the days that followed the incident he was quick to apologize to all involved and issued a statement saying the incident "made me take a hard look in the mirror to understand what fuelled my unprofessional actions."

Fry says he'll continue that self-reflection as he continues to grow on and off the ice.

"It was hard to take a leave but it was needed and I think in the end it will ultimately bring us closer together as a team but more importantly as friends," he said.

"Hopefully going forward I can continue to play well but also grow as a teammate."

  • President Donald Trump mocked France’s record in World War I and II in a Tuesday morning tweet that again waved the idea of the US pulling out of, or modifying its relationship to NATO.
  • French President Emmanuel Macron has long pushed for a European army separate from NATO, and recently said that army would need to protect against the US in some capacities.
  • Trump immediately took offense to the suggestion, calling it “very insulting.”
  • France fought valiantly in World War I but got steamrolled in World War II. Since then, France’s army has emerged as world-class and one of the best in Europe.

President Donald Trump appeared to mock France’s record in World War I and II in a Tuesday morning tweet that again waved the idea of the US pulling out of, or modifying its relationship to NATO.

French President Emmanuel Macron has long pushed for a European army separate from NATO, the global alliance that includes the US and Canada, and has since the end of World War II sought to secure the continent against Russian aggression.

Soviet toxin research was smuggled out and continued in other countries, including US – OPCW envoy https://briefnews.eu/soviet-toxin-research-was-smuggled-out-and-continued-in-other-countries-including-us-opcw-envoy/ https://briefnews.eu/soviet-toxin-research-was-smuggled-out-and-continued-in-other-countries-including-us-opcw-envoy/#respond Sat, 17 Mar 2018 04:37:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/soviet-toxin-research-was-smuggled-out-and-continued-in-other-countries-including-us-opcw-envoy/ The ‘Novichok’ nerve agent allegedly used in the Sergei Skripal attack likely came from a country were Russian chemists were taken after the Soviet Union collapsed to continue their research, Russia’s OPCW envoy told RT.

“As for ‘Novichok,’ there was never a scientific program under such a codename in the Russian Federation,” Alexander Shulgin, Russia’s permanent representative at the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) said. “However, in Soviet times, research began to produce a new generation of poisonous substances. Such research was carried out not only in the USSR, but also in the US.”

As the Soviet Union collapsed in the early 1990s, foreign “special services took a group of scientists… with the research that existed since the Soviet times” out of the country so that they could go on with their studies of poisonous substances, he said.

“We know the exact countries where such work continued, achieving certain success,” Shulgin said, without naming any. “The positive results of those studies can now be found in open sources.”

“Therefore, we can assume that the source of the substance used [against Skripal] in Salisbury is concealed in one of the countries where this research continued and achieved certain success,” the Russian envoy said.

Russian chemist Vil Mirzayanov, whose claims of Russian complicity have now been widely circulated in Western media, was among those scientists who left Russia and continued their work abroad, Shulgin said. Mirzayanov, who currently lives in the US, was the first to disclose the existence of the ‘Novichok’ nerve agent to the public in a 1992 article. When the Skripal crisis erupted, he said on Facebook that the ‘Novichok’ formula had only been published in his book ‘State Secrets: An Insider’s Chronicle of the Russian Chemical Weapons Program,’ and alleged that only Russia could’ve used such a nerve agent to attack Skripal.

‘UK is afraid we’ll find a catch in their case’

Shulgin also said that there’s currently no dialogue between the Russian and the UK delegations on the Skripal issue at the OPCW headquarters in The Hague. “We’ve made them an offer to start bilateral consultations, but they refuse; also declining to provide any samples to us.”

“Judging by the statement of the head of the British delegation, they view our offer on bilateral consultations as a distraction… as if by proposing those consultations Russia wants to drag out this whole thing and avoid responsibility,” the envoy said.

“My guess is that our British partners are afraid that, should our experts examine those samples, they will discover some catch in this whole case. And our British partners have absolutely no interest in that.”

“Moreover, we warned them that we’re ready for a meaningful dialogue, but only if the British side backs its accusations against us with convincing proof. In case nothing is presented to us… we’ll proceed from the fact that Britain has nothing and in this case it would have to be held accountable for slander,” he said.

Former Russian-UK double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Yulia, were discovered slumped on a bench in Salisbury in early March. They remain in critical condition in a hospital after being exposed to what UK authorities said was a Soviet-era nerve agent called Novichok.

This led to UK Prime Minister Theresa May accusing Russia of using chemical weapon on British soil and imposing sanctions against Moscow. The Russian side has denied any involvement in the Skripal poisoning and promised to come up with appropriate countermeasures to the British restrictions. Moscow also said it was ready to cooperate with London on investigating the incident, but the UK refused to work with Russia or provide it with any materials of the case.

Mysterious embassy health attacks in Cuba continued throughout August https://briefnews.eu/mysterious-embassy-health-attacks-in-cuba-continued-throughout-august/ https://briefnews.eu/mysterious-embassy-health-attacks-in-cuba-continued-throughout-august/#respond Sat, 02 Sep 2017 10:38:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mysterious-embassy-health-attacks-in-cuba-continued-throughout-august/ cuba us embassyAP

WASHINGTON (AP) — Mysterious health attacks on the American diplomatic community in Cuba continued as recently as August, the United States said Friday, despite earlier US assessments that the attacks had long stopped.

The US increased its tally of government personnel affected to 19.

The new US disclosures came the same day that the union representing American diplomats said mild traumatic brain injury was among the diagnoses given to diplomats victimized in the attacks. In the most detailed account of the symptoms to date, the American Foreign Service Association said permanent hearing loss was another diagnosis, and that additional symptoms had included brain swelling, severe headaches, loss of balance and “cognitive disruption.”

At the State Department, spokeswoman Heather Nauert said the US was continually revising its assessments of the scope of the attacks as new information was obtained. She said the investigation had not been completed.

“We can confirm another incident which occurred last month and is now part of the investigation,” Nauert said.

US officials had previously said that the attacks, initially believed to be caused by a potential covert sonic device, had started in fall 2016 and continued until spring 2017. Last week, Nauert had said at least 16 Americans associated with the US Embassy in Havana had been affected, but that the “incidents” were no longer occurring.

The evolving assessment from the US government suggested that investigators were still far off from any thorough understanding of what transpired in the attacks, which officials have described as unlike anything the US has experienced before.

Moreover, the fact there was an incident as recently as August indicated the attacks continued long after the US government became aware of them and ostensibly raised the issue with the Cuban government. That revelation created further uncertainty about the timeline of the attacks and who was responsible.

Notably, the US has avoided accusing Cuba’s government of being behind the attacks. The US did expel two Cuban diplomats, but the State Department emphasized that was in protest of the Cubans’ failure to protect the safety of American diplomats while on their soil, not an indication the US felt that Havana masterminded it.

US investigators have been searching to identify a device that could have harmed the health of the diplomats, believed to have been attacked in their homes in Havana, but officials have said no device had been found.

“We can’t rule out new cases as medical professionals continue to evaluate members of the embassy community,” Nauert said. She added that the embassy has a medical officer and has been consistently providing care to those who have reported incidents.

Asked for further details about what the US had learned about the cause or culprit in the attacks, the State Department said it had no more information to share.

But in Canada, a government official said that the Canadian government had first learned in March 2017 that one of its citizens had been affected by the attacks. Ottawa had previously confirmed that at least one Canadian diplomat was involved, but had not revealed any timeline for when it occurred or came to light. The official wasn’t authorized to comment publicly and requested anonymity.

It’s unclear whether Canadians were intentionally targeted or whether there could have been collateral damage from an attack aimed at Americans, given that diplomats from various countries often live in the same areas of a foreign capital. US officials have said the Americans were targeted in their homes in Havana, not in the Embassy.

Canadian officials have been actively working with US and Cuban authorities to ascertain the cause. A Cuban attack deliberately targeting Canadians would be even more confounding, given that Canada — unlike the US — has long had friendly ties to Cuba.

The American Foreign Service Association, in describing the damage to diplomats’ health, said it had met with or spoken to 10 diplomats affected, but did not specify how many of the 10 had been diagnosed with hearing loss or with mild traumatic brain injury, commonly called a concussion.

Yet the confirmation that at least diplomats suffered brain injury suggested the attacks caused more serious damage than the hearing-related complaints that were initially reported.

Traumatic brain injury, or TBI, typically results from a bump, jolt or other external force that disrupts normal brain functioning, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Short- and long-term effects can include changes to memory and reasoning, sight and balance, language abilities and emotions.

Not all traumatic brain injuries are the same. Doctors evaluate patients using various clinical metrics such as the Glasgow Coma Scale, in which a numerical score is used to classify TBIs as mild, moderate or severe.

“AFSA strongly encourages the Department of State and the US Government to do everything possible to provide appropriate care for those affected, and to work to ensure that these incidents cease and are not repeated,” the union said in a statement.

Israel’s prime minister warned Putin about continued airstrikes over Syria https://briefnews.eu/israels-prime-minister-warned-putin-about-continued-airstrikes-over-syria/ https://briefnews.eu/israels-prime-minister-warned-putin-about-continued-airstrikes-over-syria/#respond Thu, 04 May 2017 05:04:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/israels-prime-minister-warned-putin-about-continued-airstrikes-over-syria/ Benjamin NetanyahuNir Elias/Reuters

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that he told Russian President Vladimir Putin that a lack of coordination between Jerusalem and Moscow in the skies over Syria could lead to a conflict between the two countries.

“Either we coordinate between our militaries in order that we will not clash with each other — the two armies are very close to one another — or we come into conflict with each other,” Netanyahu said he told Putin in an interview with the Russian-language Channel 9 Wednesday.

“I said to him ‘I prefer that we coordinate against a clash.’ They call this in English ‘deconfliction.’ He said to me ‘I agree.’ And we coordinated,” he added.

Russia entered the Syrian civil war in 2015 in support of the regime of President Bashar Assad, carrying out bombing runs against rebel groups fighting against Damascus.

While Israel has rarely acknowledged carrying out airstrikes in Syria, a number of attacks against weapons transfers have been attributed to Jerusalem.

Netanyahu said shortly after Russia entered the war, he told Putin Israeli forces would continue to act against “the transfer of very dangerous weapons from Iran by way of Syria to Hezbollah in Lebanon.”

Netanyahu also said that while the coordination between Israel and Russia has so far helped to prevent a clash, he meets often with Putin in order to ensure that the cooperation continues.

“Every few months we need to tighten the screws,” he said.

“We are truly concerned with preventing a clash between our militaries because this is something that is not just bad for us, but bad for Russia. And I am happy that we have succeeded in doing this.”

Despite the coordination between the two countries, reported Israeli airstrikes in Syria on weapons convoys have led to tensions between Jerusalem and Moscow.

Last month, Moscow summoned Israel’s ambassador to Russia, Gary Koren, to protest a reported Israeli strike that nearly hit Russian troops stationed in the area. Syria’s ambassador to the UN later said that Russia had changed its policy and no longer grants Israel freedom of action over Syrian skies.

Netanyahu subsequently denied reports Moscow had told Israel to end airstrikes in Syria, vowing that the IDF would continue attacking weapons convoys.

A number of airstrikes since have been attributed to Israel.

In the interview aired Wednesday, Netanyahu also said that he has told Putin that Russia’s alliance with Iran in the Syrian civil war will ultimately harm Russia.

“Iran is not only a threat to us, in the end it will also be a threat to you,” he said he told the Russian leader.

Rick Perry signals the Trump administration’s continued issues with the Paris climate deal https://briefnews.eu/rick-perry-signals-the-trump-administrations-continued-issues-with-the-paris-climate-deal/ https://briefnews.eu/rick-perry-signals-the-trump-administrations-continued-issues-with-the-paris-climate-deal/#respond Fri, 21 Apr 2017 19:39:44 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/rick-perry-signals-the-trump-administrations-continued-issues-with-the-paris-climate-deal/ rick perryMichael B. DALLAS – Energy Secretary Rick Perry said at an Earth Day Texas event on Friday that the Paris agreement was “just a document that a bunch of folks got together and signed,” signaling the Trump administration’s continued qualms with the landmark climate deal.

President Donald Trump – who has called climate change a “hoax” — said on the campaign trail that’d he’d cancel the deal.

But his administration has discovered that the diplomatic and political ramifications of stepping away from the 196-country accord could be too costly.

Speaking on Friday, Perry touted the environmental progress Texas achieved under his 14 years as governor, arguing that it was possible to do without “over taxation, over litigation, or over regulation.”

The anger growing in his voice, he said his counterparts at the G7 summit he attended in Italy last week “lectured” him on continuing the US’s leadership on renewables, but they could learn a lesson from his tenure as governor.

“My point with the rest of the world is that America will continue to lead. America will continue to find the innovative ways to make sure that our air, and our water, and the globe that we live on is taken care of, that it’s in good shape for the next generation,” Perry said. “That it’s not just a bunch of talk. It’s not just a document that a bunch of folks got together and signed. It’s reality.”

Every other nation released a statement doubling down on their support for the Paris agreement at the G7 meeting, but Perry neglected to add the US’s support.

On Friday, he joked to the Texas crowd that he was tempted to tell “the lady from France” — French Minister of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy Segolene Royal — at the meeting that Texas was bigger than her country, but decided not to.

Earth Day Texas, which Republican Trammell S. Crow founded in 2011, is expected to draw 150,000 attendees this year. Perry offered an optimistic tone to its audience on the Trump administration’s possible environmental legacy.

“I’m proud to work with a president who believes he needs people like me around him to help develop the policies to protect our people, to protect our resources, to protect our planet,” he said.
