  • Google has dropped out of a bidding war with Amazon and other cloud computing companies for Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure (JEDI), a $ 10 billion contract from the Pentagon.
  • Google chose to withdraw because the contract may conflict with its corporate values, and its principles over the ethical use of AI. 
  • This decision comes just months after several employees signed a petition, and even resigned, over Google’s involvement with military projects.
  • The contract is winner-take-all, with Amazon seen as the frontrunner.

Google dropped out of the competition for a crucial Pentagon cloud computing contract valued at over $ 10 billion, the company confirms with Business Insider. 

The news, which was originally reported by Bloomberg, comes on the same day that the search giant announced the shutdown of the Google+ social network, in the wake of reports of a major security lapse. It also comes just months after Google employees protested en masse over the company’s work with the United States military.

Canada’s Kaetlyn Osmond and Gabrielle Daleman sit fourth and sixth, respectively, after Wednesday’s short program at the ISU World Figure Skating Championships in Milan, Italy.

Osmond, a native of Marystown, N.L., earned a score of 72.73 for her skate. The 22-year-old recently captured bronze in the women’s event at the 2018 Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Daleman, of Newmarket, Ont., turned in a season-best 71.61 in her short skate. The 20-year-old guaranteed a gold medal for Canada in the team event at the Winter Games with her free skate; Osmond, who lives and trains in Sherwood Park, Alta., also earned gold in that event.

Italy’s Carolina Kostner holds the lead heading into Friday’s free program with 80.27. Russia’s Alina Zagitova, who won gold at the 2018 Winter Olympics, is close behind at 79.51. Satoko Miyahara of Japan is third at 74.36.

Kostner impressed the home crowd at the 2018 World Figure Skating Championships in Milan, edging out Russia’s Alina Zagitova for 1st place in the women’s short program.6:41

Larkyn Austman of Coquitlam, B.C., also competed but did not qualify for the free skate.

Osmond and Daleman made history at the 2017 world championships when they become the first Canadian women to land on the podium in the same event.

​Defending champion and Olympic silver medallist Evgenia Medvedeva is not competing in Milan due to a persistent foot injury.

After Sweeting was eliminated from playoff contention at curling’s Masters on Thursday night, the Edmonton native turned around and played spoiler against Englot, who was forced to play catch up throughout a Friday morning matchup she would lose 8-4 that also kept the Regina resident out of Friday’s quarter-finals.

Sweeting opened the Grand Slam of Curling event in Lloydminster, Sask., with losses to Casey Scheidegger, Kerri Einarson and reigning Scotties Tournament of Hearts champion Rachel Homan.

Englot also finished with a record of 1-3 with the Manitoba rink she joined last year for the Scotties event in St. Catharines, Ont., where she dropped a 8-6 decision in an extra end to Homan.

The seven-time Saskatchewan Scotties champion has fared even worse of late against Sweeting, who went 7-0 last month to successfully defend her Tour Challenge Tier 1 title, beating Englot 8-5 in the quarter-finals of the GSOC season opener in Regina. They met in the championship the year before, with Sweeting prevailing 8-4 in Cranbrook, B.C.

Last month, Sweeting downed Englot 7-4 in the preliminary round of the Players’ Championship in Toronto.

On Friday, Sweeting took a 2-0 lead in the first end, only to watch Englot score one in each of the second and fourth to even matters.

Sweeting went up 4-2 in the fifth end but Englot answered in the sixth with a score of two. After going ahead 5-4 in the seventh, Sweeting scored three in the eighth and final end.

‘Great experience’

At 53, Englot’s career has spanned three decades, mostly in Saskatchewan. In September, she told Devin Heroux of CBC Sports she is excited each time she steps on the ice with third Kate Cameron, second Leslie Wilson and lead Raunora Westcott, who wanted someone with Englot’s experience and track record last winter when skip Kristy McDonald stepped back from competitive curling 

“It’s been such a great experience,” said Englot, adding she needed a strong 2016-17 season to prove to herself she could still compete at the highest level.

In other women’s Draw 11 play Friday morning, Jacqueline Harrison (1-3) of Mississauga, Ont., finished her Masters experience on a positive note with a 7-2 victory over Sherry Middaugh (0-4) of Coldwater, Ont.

On the men’s side, Peter de Cruz of Switzerland improved to 2-2 and avoided early elimination with a 6-2 win over Winnipeg’s Pat Simmons, a two-time Brier champion who heads home after an 0-4 performance.

“Our record in the Slam isn’t that good for qualifying for the playoffs, so anytime we have a chance to qualify is good,” said de Cruz, who will compete at the PyeongChang Olympics in February.

The Grand Slam event continues through Sunday. CBC Sports will stream the women’s quarter-finals on Saturday and the men’s final on Sunday.

Rose produced a superb up-and-down from a greenside bunker at the last in first playing a 100-foot wedge shot from the forward slope of the bunker and then was clearly pleased to see his 10-foot birdie putt drop in a round of a four-under par 66.

Rose’s round, that included four other birdies and just one bogey, handed him a share of fourth place at six-under par tally and just one behind countryman Paul Casey who carded a 67 to move into a tie for the lead at seven-under par with PGA champion, Justin Thomas who eagled his last in a 66.

Later joining the duo was former U.S. Open winning, Webb Simpson who added a 67 to be also at seven-under par.

Rose revealed he is still undergoing treatment on what he understands in a touch of tendonitis in his left shoulder and something he experienced in waking-up on Thursday, and resulted in him backing away from the driver during the first round and mainly hitting 3-wood shots off the tee.

“My shoulder was really sore yesterday and just couldn’t hit the driver so I was hitting 3-woods all day,” he said.

“I woke up on Thursday with a bit of tendonitis in my left shoulder, so it was a bit of rough day one.

“But in saying that I have also had a lot of treatment on the shoulder.”

Rose capped his round at the last with firstly World No. 1 Dustin Johnson playing from the first bunker guarding the final green but settling for a bogey in his 69 while Rose sent his shot high landing it well to the back left behind the pin but then knocking in the putt.

“I played well really, really well today and that up-and-down birdie kind of makes me feel as though it was a good day’s work”, he said.

“I was lucky my ball didn’t fall back into its plug mark there in the bunker and it was one of those bunker shots I had to be aggressive with and I used my 56-degree wedge rather than my 60-degree.

“Overall, these two days I have driven the ball well and that is what I have been doing good and what you need to do around this golf course.

“This is a course where I feel very comfortable, having played well here on numerous occasions in the past, and I like my position going into the weekend.”

And in other good news for Rose he confirmed his house in exclusive Albany in the Bahamas, and the island as a whole, managed to escape the wrath of both Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria.

Casey’s round was a mix of five birdies, including two in succession from the fifth hole but somewhat spoilt with back-to-back bogeys at 12 and 13.

“Today was very pleasing, I probably played better than I did yesterday though it was all going to plan playing tidy golf except for those blemishes on the card were from some sloppy stuff,” said Casey.

However, the new father to daughter, Astaria is now very much in the equation not just to win a first PGA Tour title, and having won a first eight years ago, but could now win the FedEx Cup trophy.

Of course, with two rounds to play there is far too many permetations and with Casey happy at least the likes of FedEx Cup front-runner, Jordan Spieth back at three-under with scores of 67 and 70.

“These results over the years, you’re up against 29 other guys so it’s…but it’s stills strong,” he said.

“I’ve had a very good season to this point but you see some of the other, Justin and Jordan, or Dustin Johnson and Hideki Matsuyama aren’t even mentioned today but they’ve had amazing seasons.

“I’ve had a very good one and I would like to turn it into a great one and the way to do it would be with victory this week.”

Though of the 30 players in the $ US 8.5m event 23 are at level par or better and with the biggest shock being Rickie Fowler trailing in 29th place at seven-over.
