“Not a single UK official was in the stadium to see England’s magnificent win v Sweden,” Pilger, whose documentary work earned him many prestigious awards, including multiple BAFTA honors, tweeted on Saturday. “It’s as if those who take the people’s votes to assume power over them have utter contempt for what they care about, as well as for the truth.”
Pilger criticized not only the ruling Tories but also Labour Party chief Jeremy Corbyn, who – despite being an outspoken leader of the opposition – fell into line with the government in shunning the World Cup.
Not a single UK official was in the stadium to see England's magnificent win v Sweden. It’s as if those who take the people's votes to assume power over them have utter contempt for what they care about, as well as for the truth. That includes a craven Opposition @jeremycorbyn
— John Pilger (@johnpilger) July 7, 2018
Fans were indeed ecstatic when England’s team made it to the semi-finals by beating Sweden on July 7. A week earlier, the Three Lions defeated Colombia in a dramatic penalty shootout. Both victories were hailed as ‘historic’ at home and abroad, because England hasn’t made it this far in the World Cup in almost 30 years. Even the royal family described England’s run as “incredible.”
However, none of the UK officials were at the stadiums to watch their team win or to celebrate its victories with English fans in Russia. British politicians decided to skip the World Cup for political reasons, with Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson going as far as comparing the tournament in Russia to the 1936 Olympics hosted by Nazi Germany.
Johnson eventually softened his tune, clarifying that the government “has no desire to punish English fans” for traveling to Russia, and is not planning “to try to get a boycott from the England team.”

The sentiment against the World Cup is shared by members of parliament, both Tories and Labour alike, who called for the tournament to be boycotted.
Tory MP Tom Tugendhat, who heads the Foreign Affairs Committee, said that senior British officials as well as royals would not go to Russia because they don’t want to make a “political endorsement of the Putin regime.” His Labour colleague Stephen Kinnock urged the government to ask FIFA to postpone the tournament until 2019 and hold it “in a more appropriate host country or countries.”
In stark contrast to the UK approach, some other nations opted to put aside their differences with Moscow and separate sports from politics. King of Spain Felipe VI traveled to cheer for his team against Portugal in the Russian city of Sochi, and later attended the Spaniards’ match against the hosts in Moscow. Despite Spain losing the match, the king met the players and the manager afterwards.
Croatia’s President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic also flew to Russia twice to support the national team in the knockout stage. She was so thrilled to see Croatia beat Denmark and then Russia that she posted video of herself celebrating and hugging every player in the winning squad.
When Sweden was up against England in the quarter-final, the nation’s Foreign Minister Margot Wallstrom announced that Stockholm will no longer be supporting the boycott of the games. “We’re in another situation now. Football should be something that unites,” she told the Swedish media.
Among the other high-profile figures who came to Russia to enjoy the atmosphere and to root for their teams were Japanese Princess Hisako and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman.
English fans have been praising the hosts for their hospitality and berating British officials for not only failing to show up themselves, but also for discouraging ordinary fans from going to Russia. As for the Russians, the embassy in London told the Guardian that “everyone” is still welcome to attend the tournament if they wish to do so.
Back from 2 weeks in Russia alive.
I wasn’t attacked by blood thirsty hooligans, I wasn’t eaten by a bear & I haven’t been poisoned or killed.
The British media should be ashamed of themselves for their clear propaganda against the Russian people. Absolutely class country 🇷🇺 pic.twitter.com/83sZwjp8Kn— Matt Maybury 🇬🇧🏴 (@ChezzerMaybury) June 29, 2018
On Wednesday, England will meet Croatia in Moscow to decide which of the two will qualify for the World Cup final on July 15.

The withdrawals of three of President Trump’s most troubling judicial nominees — Matthew Petersen, Brett Talley, and Jeffrey Mateer — are an encouraging sign that even the rubber-stamping Senate Republicans have reached a breaking point.
But those three are just the tip of the iceberg. There are many more disturbingly unqualified Trump nominees, and it should not take a humiliating hearing, a serial lack of disclosures to the Senate, or video footage of a nominee calling transgender children part of “Satan’s plan,” to derail a nomination. None of these men should have survived vetting by the administration, but with the administration asleep at the wheel, the Senate needs to set a higher bar.
The nonpartisan American Bar Association rarely gives a judicial nominee its lowest rating of “not qualified,” and when it does so, it is a clear sign that that person is deeply flawed and should not be confirmed. The ABA has already given this rare “not qualified” rating to four of Trump’s candidates, and two of them — Holly Teeter and Charles Goodwin — remain pending as nominees. They should withdraw, and if they don’t, the Senate should not confirm them.
Based on many interviews with local attorneys who have observed him, Charles Goodwin lacks the basic work ethic needed to serve as a district judge. “Magistrate Judge Goodwin’s work habits, including his frequent absence from the courthouse until mid-afternoon, raised doubt,” the ABA said in its evaluation of him. “Inaccessibility issues generated concerns about the timely and efficient administration of justice.”
Holly Teeter lacks the minimal requirement of professional experience to serve as a federal district court judge. The ABA interviewed dozens of lawyers and judges about Teeter and concluded that she “does not presently have the requisite trial experience or its equivalent.” In her Senate questionnaire, Teeter revealed that she has not even participated in a single trial.
As Louisiana Sen. John Kennedy said in criticizing Matthew Petersen, “just because you’ve seen My Cousin Vinny doesn’t qualify you to be a federal judge.”
Two other Trump nominees — Stephen Schwartz and Ryan Holte — also lack the minimal experience necessary to serve. They would have received ABA ratings of “not qualified,” but the ABA does not evaluate nominees to the US Court of Federal Claims, a trial court with nationwide jurisdiction. If confirmed, they will serve 15-year terms and can continue on the court as senior judges after that.
Schwartz and Holte are both 34 years old and graduated from law school in 2008, just nine years ago — well below the ABA minimum practice requirement of 12 years. Both lack trial experience. In his Senate questionnaire, Holte conceded: “I have not tried a case.” In his answers to written questions from senators, Schwartz also revealed a dearth of trial experience, and he further acknowledged: “I am not admitted to practice in the Court of Federal Claims,” and “I have not litigated in the Court of Federal Claims.”
It is an embarrassment and an affront to the federal judiciary that these two young and profoundly inexperienced people have been nominated for federal judgeships.
Trump’s nominees don’t just lack the necessary legal experience and work ethic, though both of these should be deal breakers. Many also lack the essential qualities of fairness and impartiality. Here is a sampling of other Trump nominees who are completely unsuited on similar grounds:
Damien Schiff: This Court of Federal Claims nominee, also in his 30s, is a prolific right-wing blogger who has called Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy “a judicial prostitute,” criticized an anti–LGBT bullying program as “teaching gayness in public schools,” and said the Supreme Court’s decision reaffirming the constitutionality of equal opportunity and affirmative action in university admissions was akin to the Supreme Court’s infamous decisions that authorized slavery, Jim Crow laws, and Japanese internment camps.
Thomas Farr: This North Carolina district court nominee has devoted his legal career to suppressing voting rights and defending companies and individuals accused of employment discrimination and sexual harassment. After his public hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee, information came to light suggesting that Farr may have lied to the committee about his knowledge of a 1990 effort by the Jesse Helms for Senate campaign to intimidate black voters. Senators must demand more information from the Justice Department to determine his truthfulness and his involvement in this nefarious conduct, which sought to deter black Americans from voting.
Stuart Kyle Duncan: This Louisiana nominee to the US Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit is a right-wing ideologue who described the Supreme Court’s decision ensuring marriage equality as “an abject failure” that “imperils civic peace.” It is hard to imagine with his extensive record that all litigants would have confidence they would receive a fair hearing before him.
Matthew Kacsmaryk: This Texas district court nominee is another anti-LGBT activist and culture warrior who does not respect the equal dignity of all people. He has written that LGBT rights and reproductive freedom are premised on a “lie” that resulted from nothing more than “the erotic desires of liberated adults.” He has expressed support for the notion that “homosexual acts are intrinsically disordered” and “contrary to natural law,” and he defended the actions of Kim Davis, the Kentucky county clerk who went to jail after refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples after the Supreme Court ruled in favor of marriage equality. His brazen disrespect for longstanding precedent and the rule of law should be disqualifying for a position that requires both.
Mark Norris: This Tennessee district court nominee has a fervent hostility to civil rights, demonstrated by legislation and policies he has endorsed during his 17 years in the state Senate. He has supported legislation to restrict voting rights, to stop local communities from removing Confederate monuments, to prohibit teachers from providing any information about LGBT issues in public schools, and to ban cities and counties from enacting laws to protect LGBT residents from discrimination. He also backed efforts to stop refugee resettlement in Tennessee and to disallow undocumented students from receiving in-state tuition, to require the state driver’s license exam to be taken only in English, and to urge Congress to overturn the Obama administration’s rule on contraceptive access.
Along with professional experience, a judicial nominee needs to answer the simple question of whether a member of the LGBT community with a discrimination claim would feel they could get a fair hearing before one of these men — and yes, they are all men, as are most of Trump’s judicial nominees. Would a female employee seeking access to contraception believe she had a judge with an open mind? Would a person of color with a voting rights claim think they had any chance of success before this nominee?
The Trump White House clearly lacks respect for the quality and independence of the federal judiciary, openly boasting about its efforts to lard the federal courts with judicial extremists in their thirties and forties. There’s also a shameful lack of diversity among them: 90% are white and more than 80% are men. This is the least diverse slate of nominees in decades, which would further undermine confidence in our courts.
The recent withdrawals of Petersen, Talley, and Mateer are encouraging, but the Senate must step up its efforts to scrutinize and reject these unqualified and radical nominees. The fate and fitness of the federal judiciary — and, in turn, our very democracy — depends on it.

Martin Shkreli was found guilty on two counts of securities fraud earlier this month, but the process of selecting a jury for the case against the former pharmaceutical CEO and hedge fund founder appeared to be as lively as the trial itself.
Some of the 200 potential jurors apparently did not hold back their views toward Shkreli during court interviews held over the course of three days in June. Their court interviews were compiled by Harper’s Magazine ahead of its September issue.
“I’m aware of the defendant and I hate him,” Juror No. 1 said. “I think he’s a greedy little man.”
When asked by the court if the juror agreed that jurors were obligated to “decide the case based only on the evidence,” Juror No. 1 responded with: “I don’t know if I could. I wouldn’t want me on this jury.”
“He’s the most hated man in America,” Juror No. 47 said. “In my opinion, he equates with Bernie Madoff … My parents are in their eighties. They’re struggling to pay for their medication. My mother was telling me yesterday how my father’s cancer drug is $ 9,000 a month,” the person claimed.
The court, emphasizing that the case would have to be considered with “an open mind,” dismissed Juror No. 47, who said, “I would find that difficult.
“When I walked in here today I looked at him, and in my head, that’s a snake — not knowing who he was,” Juror No. 52 said. “I just walked in and looked right at him and that’s a snake.”
Benjamin Brafman, Shkreli’s attorney, quipped, “So much for the presumption of innocence.”
“From everything I’ve seen on the news, everything I’ve read, I believe the defendant is the face of corporate greed in America,” Juror No. 77 said.
“We would object,” Brafman responded.
“You’d have to convince me he was innocent rather than guilty,” Juror No. 77 continued.
“I heard he bought an album from the Wu-Tang Clan for a million dollars,” Juror No. 144 said, referring to an exclusive single-copy album the hip-hop group released. Shkreli paid $ 2 million for the record in 2016.
“The question is, have you heard anything that would affect your ability to decide this case with an open mind,” said the court. “Can you do that?”
“I don’t think I can because he kind of looks like a dick,” Juror No. 144 responded.
Juror No. 59, after being called upon to address the court, came out of the gates storming: “Your Honor, totally he is guilty and in no way can I let him slide out of anything because —” Juror No. 59 began, before being cut off.
“Okay,” the court interjected. “Is that your attitude toward anyone charged with a crime who has not been proven guilty?”
“It’s my attitude toward his entire demeanor, what he has done to people,” Juror No. 59 responded.
“All right,” the court said. “We are going to excuse you, sir.”
But Juror No. 59 wasn’t done: “And he disrespected the Wu-Tang Clan.”

On Monday, US District Judge David Bury partially granted a motion to hold the Border Patrol’s Tucson Sector in civil contempt over video files the agency was ordered to turn over last August, according to the Associated Press.
Bury found that the video files from the Tucson Sector’s hold rooms were “irreparably” damaged, containing data that either could not be viewed or was missing entirely.
In January, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), along with the the National Immigration Law Center and other rights groups filed a motion, asking the judge to hold the Border Patrol in civil contempt for destroying and failing to preserve the video files, which they called “the most critical evidence” in the case.
The motion claimed that Border Patrol “corrupted their own video data archives, rendering them inaccessible, including video showing their own experts inspecting the facilities in January 2016.”
The plaintiffs claimed that the Tucson Sector violated two court orders, including a sanction over its destruction of video evidence. In 2015, the court sanctioned the agency over their decision to destroy the videos, saying it was “at best, negligent and was certainly willful.”
The court also found that the Border Patrol “acted unilaterally to modify their responsibilities to preserve evidence required by law, rule and direct Order of this Court,” according to the motion.
On Monday, the court found that the Border Patrol’s Tucson Sector knew the files were corrupted as early as June 2016, and neglected to inform the court or the plaintiffs until December 19, 2016.
The judge denied the plaintiff’s request to appoint a third-party vendor to serve as a Data Monitor for the Border Patrol to work on producing the missing video files, but he did order the agency to turn over a list of all the footage that went missing within a week.
“This is a good result for us,” Nora Preciado, an attorney with the National Immigration Law Center told the Associated Press. “The court recognizes that this is a pervasive problem in the inability to preserve evidence.“
The original class-action lawsuit, filed in 2015 claims that the Border Patrol’s Tucson Sector, which covers most of the State of Arizona, held migrants in inhumane and unconstitutional conditions.
In 2016, the court ordered the release of photos, security footage, and documents that showed migrants being held in cold, overcrowded, and dirty cells for long periods of time without access to bedding, medicine, adequate food, water, and basic sanitation and hygiene items like soap.
The holding cells were only ever meant to serve as short-term holding cells for immigrants who crossed the border illegally, but a 2016 report from the American Immigration Council (AIC) found that over two-thirds of the migrants were held for more than 24 hours.
The report says that immigrants often refer to the holding cells as “las hieleras,” which translates from Spanish as “freezers” or “iceboxes.”
