Career website Glassdoor today released its 10th annual Employees’ Choice Awards, a list of the 100 best companies to work for in the coming year. Facebook was crowned as not just the number one tech company to work for in 2018, but the best company to work for, period.

This isn’t the first time Facebook has topped the list. Facebook was the top tech company in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2017, and now 2018. Five out of 10 is no coincidence: If you’re a Facebook employee, you can safely say your employer is the best there is in tech.

Going back a few years, Airbnb was first for 2016, Google led for 2015, and Twitter won for 2014. Neither Airbnb nor Twitter made the list this year. Google did, but that’s completely expected — Google has made the list all 10 years. The only other tech company to have accomplished that is Apple, which slipped 48 spots this year (Apple thus would not have made the cut this year if Glassdoor had not expanded the overall list to 100).

There were 19 tech companies in the top 50 this year. That’s down slightly from 20 tech companies last year, and 21 the year before that.

Here are the 28 tech companies on this year’s U.S. list (ratings are based on a five-point scale, from 1.0 as very dissatisfied to 5.0 as very satisfied):

Every year, tech companies are prominently displayed on top lists like Glassdoor’s. After all, jobs in the tech industry are well compensated. After the 28 companies in tech, the next few categories have significantly fewer members: retail (11 companies), health care (11 companies), consulting (six companies), finance (six companies), travel & tourism (six companies).

The Employees’ Choice Awards is based on the input of employees who choose to provide feedback (at least 1,000 must respond) on their job, work environment, and company via an anonymous online company review survey. Glassdoor then uses a “proprietary algorithm” to determine an overall ranking “based on the quantity, quality, and consistency of reviews.”

Results are thus based on what employees anonymously tell Glassdoor about their employer. There are eight workplace attributes that employees can give feedback on: overall company rating, career opportunities, compensation & benefits, culture & values, senior management, work/life balance, recommend to a friend, and six-month business outlook. Glassdoor also takes into account various types of employment status including full-time, part-time, contract, and freelance. Intern company reviews are not considered, nor are reviews from employees at government organizations, universities, and multi-level marketing agencies.

Facebook employees are clearly happy with the company. Based on its track record, it’s consistently the best tech company you could work for.

And time is now a huge factor.

With the 2018 Winter Olympic women’s hockey tournament in Pyeongchang, South Korea set to begin Feb. 10, the Canadians still have not figured out how to consistently beat the United States.

That was supremely evident in Sunday’s 5-1 loss to the Americans in the gold medal game of the Four Nations Cup at Amalie Arena, home of the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning. The Olympic tournament runs between Feb. 10-22.

Team USA, which is favoured by many to win the gold medal in Pyeongchang, has now won the past three Four Nations Cups as well as the past three world championships.

It should be noted that Team Canada elected not to play their probable Olympic starting goalie, Shannon Szabados, in the tournament, electing to go with Geneviève Lacasse and Ann-Rénee Desbiens instead. However, goaltending wasn’t the issue in Florida. Lacasse had two shutouts in two starts in the preliminary round.

Close game for 55 minutes

The final was a close game for the first 55 minutes, with the United States building a 2-1 lead. Then Canada ran into penalty trouble, taking three minors in the final 4:49, which allowed the Americans to score back-to-back power play goals 1:43 apart to put the game out of reach.

The casual observer might suggest Canada’s lack of discipline late in the game led to its downfall. Making frequent trips to the penalty box late in a close game is never a sound strategy.

“We have to be more disciplined in those situations,” said Team Canada coach Laura Schuler. “You can’t take penalties that end up flipping things around.”

There were other problems, though.

Time and time again throughout the tournament, Canadian players passed up golden shooting opportunities to make that one extra pass, looking for the cute or highlight-reel goal. Consequently, Canada wound up missing out on numerous shot on goal opportunities or turned the puck over. When the latter occurred, it often led to an odd-man rush for the opposition.

‘It’s a little bit frustrating

Lacasse found herself wondering why there weren’t more shots by her teammates, not that she was assigning blame.

“It’s a little bit frustrating in that sense because I feel like the Americans take advantage of when they have those odd-man rushes and they take those shots and take the inside position,” Lacasse said. “That is something we can work on. We don’t always have to make the nice play to get the goal. Being a little more gritty, I think, will help us out.”

Team Canada captain Marie-Philip Poulin, who said she was angry at herself for passing up on a shooting opportunity in the third period with Canada trailing by a goal, agreed she and her teammates need to start think shoot rather than pass when the opportunity arises.

“We have to make better decisions when we have a 2-on-1,” Poulin said. “Obviously we want to make the perfect pass, but we’ve got to face reality that we have to be a little more greedy and put more pucks on the net.”

Much has been made of Team USA’s speed, but the Canadians proved beyond a doubt they could skate stride for stride with the Americans so that should not be an issue at the Olympics.

Another problem for Canada at the Four Nations Cup was the number of blind passes that went astray as well as rushed plays in the defensive zone that led to turnovers.

Plenty of takeaways

Team Canada defenceman Meaghan Mikkelson said there will be plenty of takeaways from the loss to Team USA.

“Each time we play them we want to win and it’s an opportunity for us to learn, but this isn’t the Olympics,” said Team Canada defenceman Meaghan Mikkelson. “They’re a great team and each time they play us they expose our weaknesses. In my opinion, that is a good thing and we’re going to keep learning and keep getting better.”

As for the Americans, they are sitting sweet with the Olympic Games just around the corner. Team USA has suffered heartbreaking losses to Canada in each of the past two Games, in 2010 in Vancouver and 2014 in Sochi, Russia.

“Any win and any step in the right direction gives our team confidence, momentum and energy,” said Team USA captain Meghan Duggan. “Coming off this tournament 4-0 and capturing the championship feels good.”

Duggan was asked if the USA’s dominance the past three years has caused Canada to play catch up at this stage of the Olympic preparation, but she refused to offer up anything that might light a fire under her team’s greatest opponent.

“We like to just focus on us,” Duggan said. “I don’t want to talk about them and where they are at. I’m certainly happy with our program and where we’re at, three world championships and three Four Nations Cups in a row. It gives us confidence going into the biggest tournament in four years.”

When Jeff Bezos started Amazon.com with $ 300,000 of his parent’s money, he gave himself a 70% chance of failing.

This estimation demonstrated more hubris than confidence, given that only 10% of startups succeed.

Nevertheless, he knew that taking a risk was a necessary, albeit terrifying, component of progress.

Bezos used what he terms “regret minimization framework” to solidify his decision to start Amazon.

In other words, he asked himself how he might feel at age 85 as he reflected on his decision. Would he have more regrets if he tried building an internet company and failed, or would he feel worse if he never tried? He decided on the latter, took a gamble, and well, you know the rest.

According to Daniel Goodman MD, Harvard trained psychiatrist and entrepreneur, Bezos found a way to resolve a universal struggle.

“With complex decisions, it is hard to make a choice, let alone to even know how to go about making a choice,” says Goodman.

Indeed, it can be difficult to define goals and values, particularly when the results might be ambiguous and intangible for many years. Goodman states “asking yourself to consider what your future self might be thinking is a powerful perspective-taking technique that can help identify what matters most to you.”

This difficult process can be quite valuable. If we can be crystal clear about what we strive for in our personal and professional life, we will be more likely to achieve what we want.

As a psychotherapist, I sometimes use a bit of drama to push clients out of their comfort zone and make big life decisions. I use a similar technique to Bezos, morbidly termed “the tombstone exercise.” 

True to the name, clients write an imaginary epitaph that describes how they want to be remembered, and what they hope to achieve at the time of their death.

Next, the patient writes what their tombstone might say if their life ended today. Albeit creepy, this powerful exercise helps clients develop perspective and vision regarding vital life goals.

Another critical life lesson can be learned from Amazon’s early day.

At its inception. Amazon was an original in a completely novel marketplace. Bezos and his team were forced to focus on what customers might want from this newfangled shopping platform called the “internet,” instead of what the competition was doing. This mentality created a culture in which Amazon prioritized customers above all else. This tradition became a company ethos.

man thinkingStrelka Institute for Media, Architecture and Design/FlickrToday, Amazon prides itself on being “earth’s most customer-centered company.” By focusing on what customers want, instead of the competition, employees worked towards defined targets within their control; low prices, big selection, and fast delivery.

Many companies make the mistake of trying to undermine the competition, an ambiguous ethereal goal that causes uncertainty and creates insecurity. Focusing on what everyone else is doing also takes bandwidth away from innovation, creativity and cohesive company culture.

To reiterate, what are the key lessons from the early days of Amazon? Take the time to define your values and long-term goals, and stay focused on your own progress, which more under your control than undermining competition.

Focusing on creating a product that everyone loves versus what everyone else is doing creates a trusting and creative culture. That is what Jeff Bezos did, and it became the foundation for Amazon’s success and longevity.
